This is the first time I've read a Mary Sue/Gary Stu story that doesn't have fighting or combat as a primary focus.

We have the story of a fat 36 year old guy, that just lost his job because he's fat (even though the author instantly put the mental, social and working capabilites of him above other people [and even says that his bosses doesn't noticed this]). Because of this, he becomes a hikikomori (only saying he becomes one, we never see him going through this, since from one chapter to... more>> the next he goes from "hikikomori" to working out outside of his room). The MC gains an interest in dancing, and starts going through a gym and, once again, he goes from fat to lean and muscular from one chapter/paragraph to the next.

This is the biggest problem I have with this story. The author write a bunch of flaws for the character (like being fat) and instantly nullifies them in one chapter/paragraph to the next by just saying "by his dedication, he was able to overcome it". We never see the difficulties the MC might have to better himself.

Another problem is what I've said in the beguinning: the MC is basically a Gary Stu character. Simply, he's too perfect. He has a good mind (he is smart, has good social skills [at least according to the author, we never see this]), perfect body (after working out and having a balanced diet [again, this happens from one chapter to the next] he goes from "big fatty" to "really handsome guy") is a nice person (when he sees the comments of his video, the only one that truly makes him happy is the one that simply said the video "cheered him up". Not the ones that says he sings well, that he dances well, that he is handsome. Only the one that says he cheered up another person with his video), among other stuff. The MC simply doesn't have any flaws to make him likeable. We never see the MC passing for difficulties, so why do we need to care if' he's gone from fat to handsome through "hard work" (even though we never see this supposed "hard work", it is just told to us).

If you just want to read a wish fulfillment story that isn't basically just fighting or combat/action, this is totally for you. For me, personally, this story has too little substance to continue reading. <<less

Tentative review.

The "Heartwarming" tag is definitely appropriate here. The MC hit a rut in life through no fault of his own, but his curiosity and dedication give him the drive and opportunity to set his life on a new course. MC has a great attitude and is a great son/brother who loves his family as much as they love him. Looking forward to seeing more of him in the future; hopefully the vibe stays the same.

Currently rating a 5 for the warm fuzzies, not far enough in the TL to... more>> make any real judgment on the story. <<less

This novel should have been titled "36 years old uncle idol: how everything works out just fine after I lost weight".

No fight, no misunderstanding, understanding family, meeting the right people and opportunities, plus his personality is perfect. The mc's luck is similar to xianxia's protagonist plot armor, but since this is a heartwarming jpn story, there's no enemy or face smacking. Not bad, but nothing too memorable either

It's nice to see a ugly to beauty transformation that was done in a realistic manner. Gradually, through months and months of exercise and eating well. As well as a long skin care process. Rather than some magic cheat or inhumanly extreme diet and training regimen. I also find it wonderful that for once a male protagonist is a genuine decent human being with character and a mature (age appropriate) mindset. Too often hikikomori are depicted as man-child pe*verts.

All in all I'd highly rate is just for what it's NOT,... more>> but it is also a good slice of life novel and look forward to what happens next. <<less

A short yet fluffy story, of a humble man who decided to change for the sake of his family. Currently not much chapter have been translated, but it should be okay to give it a 4.5/5 — 5/5.

Btw, I swear the author did a really bad job with giving such misleading title.
I mean, sure it's true, but... uugh could he phrased it better?

You know what, I'm giving this 5 stars. While some might find this too much of a Gary Stu story, I think this story is more based on reality than people think. Feeling like your life is falling apart, that your body isn't how you want it to be, and that you're not as successful as you imagined you'd be as an adult are things a lot of people can empathize with. To me, this story is about hard work and keeping a positive attitude even when things go wrong.... more>> Sure, it's like reading about someone's daydream, but I think we all have those dreams where everyone sees and appreciates us for who we are and the struggles we went through to get here.

I know there's not a lot of chapters, but I just wanted to thank the author for writing a story about someone that puts in the work for personal improvement. <<less

Hahaha this is awesome. He's handsome, has enough muscle, skillful, perfect and all but when life reminded me he's about 40 and the other members were above 40, I was like "right! He's an ossan (╥﹏╥) " it's such a strange feeling, but I don't hate it. I wish the translation team that is picking this up will update more. I don't understand the way plot goes if I use your highness google-sama *sigh*

If you read the title, it's really not that interesting after all it's about a middle age man. But the writing and atmosphere made the story colorful and lively.

But because of the new translator which is from mtl, it became annoying to read and boring. Though my rating doesnt change even with that. (Still, I'm gonna drop this one for now)

After the MC lost weight a series of coincidence due and his actions leads to him, becoming a instant idol.

Well the novel is really "heartwarming" no sad events, no senseless killings, it's just pure heartwarming scenes from his caring and understanding family, to his current friends.

What I love about this novel is that, most of us could relate with the MC, he hopes, dreams and wish to be able to trust and interact with his friends or along those lines. And it also gives a moral lesson to just not... more>> lose faith 'cause your friends and family will always be there for you <<less
