The further I read the less I like it. The world building is rather good and male characters are well developed. My main criticism is that the adult female characters are nearly all in non-consent scenarios and are portrayed as unruly, spoiled or weak.

Good novel if you like kingdom building and technology gap. I really like these kind of novels.

What I also like is that this has the MC leveling up his friends and building relationships with other lords/traders. He delegates his tasks. Also the author hasn't made it as smooth sailing as the MC faces challenges/uncertainties/set-backs. The MC has to tactfully negotiate those and steer his ppl towards prosperity. ... more>>
Spoiler

Like when negotiating / fighting his way across this one duchy. He also was on constant lookout for opportunities, so that the 1, 70, 000 strong convoy o his can reach his lands safely

[collapse]

The things I feel lacking in these novels is, how the author doesn't focus on the biggest deus ex machina available in these scenarios : establishing a bank to catapult the economy (as well as a postal system). Also one of the long term goals of MC should be how to establish a constitution for governing and safe-guarding the rights of man (EU4 anyone?). That and printing press. *Sigh*... ah, all this nitpicking is starting to sound more and more like that Monty python Spanish inquisition vid. <<less

This novel is surprisingly very good. After passed the laid down story of Lorist in the city, the plot picked up. It was so good that I continue with MTL till the latest chapter, and it is not boring at all. There are many things done very well in this story.

Before I get down to what I like on this story, lets look at the challenges on reading this story.
Spoiler

1). The world is brutal and grim. In one side, MC gives some light to this world with his actions, but some are remaining and he just adapt to it. The worst is woman fate in this world. It is harsh, and they are seen as s*xual objects in most cases (MC kind of r*pe his maid - of course it is not r*pe by MC world standard, as in this world, maid also serve as the master s*xual companion). Don't expect any great female side characters here. All men.
2). some unnecessary plot which is quite annoying. we can just skip that and we are just fine. One example is the "love story" in the beginning, no plot impact at all till the last chapter in raw. Worst, there are an arc about barbarian about 5 chapters which suddenly being cut by author (looks like he get pressurized by fan or lost some ideas?)

[collapse]

Now the good parts
1). MC age is at 24, which gives some maturity to the actions and motives. No child act as wise old man here. The time line is also paced very well. No unreasonable power jump within sort of time. MC just like a normal (well, slightly OP) person in that world, at least not heaven defying genius.
2). No repetition. Very refreshing when the story flows well and new adventures is come up and all in a fresh idea. Some times you know that MC had big advantage compare the enemy, and then it turns out the enemy can bite back in unpredictable way.
3). World building. No info dump, all the world building is given piece by piece which really help readers to immerse in this world. All the politics, culture, geography, factions are mentioned in clever way which helps us to relate to the plot. Not just random info. The world is resembles typical western fantasy a lot (it reminds me on Game of thrones - without the dragon:)).
4). Reincarnation is done realistically. The MC was a soldier and a workshop owner. Aside form his martial arts "cheat", there are no "know it all" knowledge as in other xianxia. Realistically, what he brought is fresh idea. He need other person, his subordinate, to research on those and find the breakthrough step by step. So expect the sword and shields still be main weapons for long-long time before firearms.
5). Battle and warfare. The MC is OP, he almost win everytime he fight, but he cannot face 1000 person alone (in this setting a Blade master should be capable to kill hundreds soldier). He rely on his army - yes this story has more emphasis on warfare rather than martial arts. So we will see the emphasis on tactics, logistics, artillery, scouts, castle defense etc., which done very well.
6). Kingdom Building. Starts slow, pick it up later.
Spoiler

Our MC start kingdom building slow in the start until he fend off the external threat, then, the building starts picking up as well as MC's modern idea (think of RTW here) like steel making, university, real estate, road, gunpowder (very late in the story because of his failure to replicate - he need knowledge from dwarf), bank etc, He also fail a lot: fail to produce paper, cement, firearm etc.

[collapse]
Expect some normal kingdom building here (opening colony, creating farm and so on.
7). Plot. Most of the time, something happens due to some reason. MC is either force to act according to that or take the opportunity to grab first for his benefit. Most of it believable and quite realistic. The challenge he got whether on infrastructure or political relation is quite well thought as well.

I think this story is worth read. A real enjoyment. Many times I really want his super strong convoys to come back to northern territory and wipe his arrogant enemies.... know what happens? Really satisfied on what the author really did on this :) <<less

The summary has nothing to do with the story. So far the story has only been about flashbacks. The worst thing is that the novel itself is mediocre at best.

Tales of the Reincarnated Lord is a novel full of ups and downs, although it had gradually stabilized after a certain set of chapters there are still various moments of uncertainty.

Tbh, sometimes I feel as if the author is a mad man, a freak who loves details and world building so much that I admired him. But other times I can be greatly disappointed on how he executed the plot.

There are certain moments that the author isn't able to bring the parts of the novel to life, I felt as... more>> if I'm reading a narration instead of a novel instead. Chapters like that are a real downer. The way how the author slowy builds the world is definitely enchanting, but just as I said, the plot execution is a horrible flaw of the author.

I'll be jotting down my thoughts below when I was reading chp1-50. So this is more like an impression I have of this novel rather than a review.

Note that the chapters might not be perfectly accurate as I didn't read all 50 chps in one go.

Spoiler

- Chapters 1 -13/14 -

These chapters made me muddled headed reading it, it's full of info dumps that is written as if the author do not have a way to construct the world building in a better way. Pacing of the story could be better, the slight confusing order of the story inhibits a relaxing read and there are some details that could actually be left out.

- Chapters 15~21 -

Much better progress, the love story arc is old-fashioned but cute. The arc brings out more personality of the MC than the previous chapters. It is also done a lot better than the previous chapters, the read has been relaxing and easy. Info dumps had mostly lessened to a few and tolerable.

Actually, after reading chapter 14/15-21, I have gotten in a trance reading it, Felt like reading it while sitting in a chair inside a wooden house in medivial times, it just encaptures me and sucks me into it. I was not willing to digest fast-paced novels for the next hour because of it. At the time, I truly hope this novel can make me feel like that again.

- Chapters 21-26 -

Meh, another boring set of chapters that actually came out of nowhere that is dull enough to make me stop reading around chp 24, this part of the story tells the tale of Locke and one of his best friend, Els, how they meet and the events that led to how close they are.

Some details are very funny and intriguing, but the sudden introduction of this arc is poorly executed, but once you lived through this arc.. Get ready for exquisiteness.

- Chapters 27~45 -

This arc made me totally lose track of time reading it, what seemed like a borish chapters of Locke participating in the duel (finally) is actually the arc that made me fall in love in how detailed the author actually is.

The duel, which is orchestrated by the head academy and his friend, might seem incredibly annoying at first at how our MC is actually played around by the academy, but you would later find out that it's not actually all like that, the academy actually deeply cares about him too and his wages are considered astronomical when compared tp normal earners or his friends.

Chapters 45-50

Probably the most exciting arc yet to come for this novel, with the true story, described from the synopsis only starting from here on out, then you can truly understand why the TL writes out such kind of summary, I'll leave the details out, because when you are able to reach this point, I'm sure you are already an intrugued fellow reader too.

[collapse]

The characterization is mostly good, although the MC Locke might have some views that we, as a modern person might not agree.

The story is fairly realistic with touches of good ol' middle ages, pacing is indeed a bit lacking with some totally unnecessary details, had to admit it.

Execution of the plot is clearly not the best and is one of this novel's big-big downsides, but the world-building and intricateness of this novel has managed to keep it's ranks up.

For those who is going to read it, I suggest you to have very very great patience, and if you have problems with the of the way the author narrates the story then you might not like it.

8.4/10. On better times it could reach 8.7, but when it hit down low it could be lots lower. <<less

One of the most interesting CN novels, that maybe is the closest to western-style writing. As in - no overused cliche, no ridiculousness, the characters are multidimensional and some enemies can become allies in the future. The rise in power is not too fast and not too slow - the pacing is moderate compared to the average CN novel but not excruciatingly slow at all. The development of the industry is not ridiculous like in "Release that witch", but still there. The events don't feel forced and the story doesn't... more>> go sideways even at 500+ chapters.

There are still some inevitable things as in other chinese novels (the MC is well-endowed, good in bed, can KO a girl in bed etc.) but it doesn't become an eyesore - and girls, while being part of the story, are not the main part.

Personnally I liked learning about the history of things and it didn't feel like infodumps shoved in my mouth.

There are a few gripes due to my Western sensibilities that almost made me drop the novel:

Spoiler

- The r*pe of the maid, even if it stemmed from a misunderstanding (that she was experienced at her job etc.)
- When they completely exterminate the waves of magical beast, they could just control them

[collapse]

But that stopped starting chapter 230. There are a few things I can think of in later chapters that may not be perfect, but I still give it 5 stars given how interesting I find the novel. <<less

Great story. We follow the life of a modern man reincarnated into a noble, ostracized by his family, inheriting his family domain and bringing it to new heights. For those worried about a story in which the from the future protagonist creates revolutionizing inventions like gun powder and cement -- you don't need to worry about it here. However, mechanical inventions are sometimes introduced by the protagonist that exceed those of the time like water mills and catapults, but are still not to dominant.

Overall, if you like politics, warfare and... more>> kingdom building, read this! <<less

One of the better reincarnation stories out there.... definitely worth a read. After reading so so many reincarnation stories I usually drop a story pretty easily if I don't like it.

What I really liked was the realism behind the story. No annoying cliches or plot armor and the like. Although most bad guys are kinda s*upid (but not all though), overall the story flows really well.

Warning: The first few chapters are kind of annoying with all the flashbacks but if u can get through it, you're in for a exciting... more>> adventure.

The commentors are also pretty cool, specially in the later chapters, there's like a multiple discussions about what's going on and I usually find at least one other person who has the same retort as me lol. Also the translator Ryogawa is pretty active with replying which is pretty cool too. <<less

After 200 chapters this is hands down one of the best world building stories currently being translated.

This story has a horrendous (ly boring) start that seems to have made a lot of people rate this poorly. I was bored one day and worked through the first 50ish chapters, the story actually started to get good! There was a reason for the boring development, the payoff just came much later than I would have liked.

The focus of the story is on his territory development and relationships rather than the standard cliches.

He... more>> is strong but not op, his decision making is fairly rational, the side characters have depth, and the interactions seem real. <<less

Best light novel I have read so far. The world is amazing, nothing is just white or black, and plot is great. Maybe the pace of novel is really slow, but I don't mind, personally hate when plot can be described as "defeating one villan, to find out that around the corner is bigger villan, and after him there are another 20, but fortunately plot armor on the MC is so thick that there will be always smt which will save his us and also help him crush the enemy".

In... more>> TRL plans are not always perfect and every one is doing mistakes like in real world. The MC is strong, but can't defeat an army or manage all small affairs by himself, which makes him more humanly and it easier to like him that way. Also side characters are not divided on (everyone who follows MC is good and smart, neutral people are good but not that smart so they will regret not following MC, and people which are againts MC are all evil and they power only came from their greed, but they are s*upid anyway so MC can trick them as he wants..) but they are have their own goals and dreams.

I wouldn't recomennd this LN only for kids who are looking for most OP MC, who can crush the planet by his fart, everyone else could give a try (first chapters maybe are just backstories but we can all know MC and 'world' better thanks to them.

One of my current favourite novels to read, the Tales of the Reincarnated Lord has a lot of aspects that make me want to continue reading - the kingdom building, the characters (particularly the MC), the story and the potential for further development on all of the previously mentioned aspects. I would definitely recommend this novel to everyone and hope that the slow start (which I honestly did not mind/could not tell) does not bother you.

For one, as everyone has already mentioned, just gloss through the first 40-50 chapters. Those are just info dumps. Some of the points in those chapters might be well made but they don't require a deep reading.

The author takes the info dumping to another level and has it in every other chapter. These many horses, s*aves, money etc etc are put in excruciating details. Not to mention, the amount of people and their names, after sometime you will get confused as to who is silver ranked, who is gold, who... more>> is mercenary or knight. So why the rating 4 you ask? Well story telling. I love my sides of fast paced xianxia stories but many of them rely on a single plot line to pull things. Here war seem to be the focal point for sure but it is intricately woven into the story. Why are there these many wars is explained well. That said, if you don't like political intrigue and rather expecting a cultivation themed novel then you are in for a disappointment. The story is slow and there are no blood rush moments of defeating someone superior using a low cultivation. If your expectation is that, skip it. <<less

The story is told as a history documentary about the rise of the Norton Kingdom. The story starts slow and dumpes alot of information about the characters in the first 50 or so chapters. The chapters aren't that important, but give little bit of context to the actions and trust showed between the main cast later in the book. The advancement in technologie is also done really well. The MC doesn't just create machine guns in the first year, but slowly builds up from balistas to catapults to cannons. If you like reading about the history of like the roman empire (or other great empires) then you would probably like reading this book.

I usually check reviews before reading, but the reviews for this was either "everything is terrible" or "everything is amazing" so I decided to give it a try.

There's barely any mention of the life before reincarnation. Aside from a martial art technique and some clothing designs, there was nothing else from his previous life that was mentioned or bought over as of now. So the reincarnation part is vague and not well written. If you like knowing details of logistics of battle and stuff, you will enjoy this. If you... more>> don't care about how many s*aves/horses they gain from each war and how they restructured the army, there are paragraphs and paragraphs that you can skip and miss nothing. Seriously, there were some chapters where I skipped the background, only reading 10% of it and didn't miss anything in the plot.

And onto the good stuff. Yes the MC is kind of OP sometimes, but I'm happy there's a progression of plot and strategies involved instead of the 500 variation of the same "jerk hate MC, MC fights and OPs then leaves, jerk from new place hate MC, repeat". The MC is not a cultivation maniac or 1000 year virg*n blockhead. There are cultivation and there are women, but nothing pe*verted or paragraphs of description of women/how OP the MC is. The story starts with how MC accumulates money and friends while growing stronger, then slightly shift into war strategies as he travel to homeland with friends. This is where I'm at right now, I expect to see some juicy politics and more strategies later.

Aside from the first 10-20 chapters being a bit vague/loose in explanation and paragraphs of verbose description that can be skipped, it is a good story. Good plot line with interesting MC and well translated. <<less

It's good; the setting is intricate and detailed, the main character is determined and smart yet not wholly without fault as he makes mistakes but works to correct those without hesitation. If you're tired of the usual tropes like "face" and iron-clad rankings or skills that seem wholly unrelated to anything real, then this is definitely a treat.

The power structures of individuals is based on something tangible and easily discernible, so the fact that people believe those rankings to be true makes sense. The main characters use of qigong to... more>> continue his training once he hits a cap also makes sense given how well documented his love for the art prior to reincarnation was.

While he does get some annoying freebies like "dynamic vision" and his qigong abilities, the main meat of the story is NOT about the main character defeating everything like in your usual martial arts novel, rather the fact that he is strong is merely the set up for the politics and friendships that he is involved in. Had his jolly gang of hangers on not decided to join him in his journey, this story would easily lose one or two stars from me.

Romance-wise the story hasn't seen much of any development as the main character has loved and lost before the novel proper and most of the subsequent encounters are casual or end in failure. I saw someone complain about maids getting r*ped and I had to laugh, as the setting already explicitly encourages this; one count had over 60 illegitimate sons while the main character has 17 illegitimate siblings as well!

Overall, it really only gets going at around 50-60-ish as the amount of flashbacks before that is quite staggering, but I still recommend it. <<less

Above average. Very similar to 'Release That Witch' in that an Earthling transmigrated to a foreign world filled with Western-style naming conventions, medieval/feudal setting etc. Both have magical, fantasy elements. The difference between the two is the RtW emphasizes on technology while TotRL is more on martial arts.

TotRL is decently written and action-packed. The MC is a likable, capable character and the author spends a lot (and I mean a lot) of time telling us his background and motivation. A reader might feel annoyed at the early chapters but... more>> soon the MC graduates from a simple duelist to a noble heir. The journey is arduous though, it takes some 90+ chapters for him to actually reach his inherited dominion.

The pet peeve I have with this particular title is the minutia the author insists on telling us. "They recruit 278 people... 14 died in battle... 37 horses slaughtered... 56 enemies captured" etc. The author loves to tell us specific numbers, though I suspect the story could easily be told with simple descriptions instead. It's like the stats window in VR-game novels, but in prose form and thus I am suspicious that the author did it to pad out the chapter word count.

The translator is doing a good job, though I fear he would soon show the whites of his eyes at the sheer amount of details and problematic naming styles used in Chinese. <<less

Almost caught up before I dropped it. Just far too many info dumps. Story would actually be a solid 4 if not for the constant info dumps. We get an info dump of someone describing the situation, we get an info dump of what each person knows about the situation, we get info dumps about everyone's responses to the situation, then and only then is it time for planning. After that something happens for 1 chapter. Then info dump cycle starts over and over again. The closer to caught up... more>> I got, the more and more frustrated I was. This story could really do with team 4 star abridged series.

Also last 150 chapters or so MC has started becoming dense just to allow new drama to arise. Falling into mistakes that simply shouldn't happen, allowing dumb things to happen because he can't be arsed to focus on them,

The Thing that I hate the most about web novels is the inconsistency of the MC.

the author emphasized so much that nobles have a high position in the world the MC reincarnated to, where even the most Powerful rich that are not nobles had to respect even the lowest ranked nobles.
