“It is said that when a martial exponent reached the highest state of divinity of their arts, they are able to transcend into Celestials, overcoming the limitation of life and death. And as Celestials, they have to overcome seven celestial divinity, Genesis, Enlighten, Emotion, Transverse, Seventh Sense, Crisis and Ascend in order to transcend to the Heavens.”

A Martial Odyssey is an epic quasi-fantasy/wuxia fiction, of a young man Yi Ping as he braved untold dangers in the martial fraternity. The powerful Honor Manor rules the Orthodox Martial Fraternity, yet there are other equally mysterious martial clans that are outside the influence of the orthodox fraternity; like the Eternal Ice Palace, the Virtuous Palace and the Celestial Palace.

When the Celestial Fairy of the Eternal Ice Palace is rumored to pass away, it immediately attracted the attention of numerous exponents that undertake the perilous journey to the Heavenly Mountains for the martial secrets of the Eternal Ice Palace.

I had this novel on my reading list for a long time but never read it because of the tag of "Naive protagonist." I knew what I was going for if I started reading this but I still did it. I was reading this novel along with ATG, Emperor's Domination and Grasping evil. Compared to the MCs of these three novels, I felt like this one is not Naive but s*upid, dumb, implusive and a complete idiot. A person is said to naive when his thinking is simple and has... more>> a one track mind. But still the person could be clever and smart in combat and strategy. They could be naive emotionally but not plain dumb.

I have read novels with a naive MC however I was not able to bear this one. At one point I thought there would be some character development for the MC but to no avail. I actually find the harem to be the redeeming factor and the author somehow forcefully made them love the MC stating his determination and noblility as few of the reasons. Yeah, he is always determined to die nobly and gets his life saves by the harem most of the time. Rather than a hero, he actually sometimes seems like a heroine or a beta male. <<less

Although it's tagged as completed, the author introduces a whole new world near the end and leaves it open... leads me to believe that there is either a v4c11/v5c1 out there somewhere or that the series just got cancelled.

As another reviewer mentioned, the series is reminiscent of The Deer and the Cauldron except with a main character that is more typical xian xia hero. Main character is a nice guy who isn't weak but his fairly naive. Good karma and smart and powerful wives tend to get him out of... more>> the messes he gets himself into.

Reincarnation is done fairly well and is crucial to the story and not simply a plot device used in other chinese novels to explain why the main character thinks like a modern day person in a fantasy setting. <<less

Just finished the whole thing.

I personally wasn't bothered by the MC, but I can understand why some readers can't stand him.

It felt like there were some parts of the story that I had to slowly drag myself to get through. Also, it's probably because I'm not used to CN character names, but I had a hard time remembering who was who. And unlike JP stories, I can't just keep track of characters based on random hair color or extreme personality types.

The author would sometimes time-skip, mostly between volumes. Am still... more>> wondering if the author would just introduce more girls because they got bored of the previous ones.

Either way, it's not a terrible story, but does feel a little old-fashioned.

The translating was pretty rough at various points as well, though, I'm not sure a better translation would have been able to do much better based on the story they had to work with. All in all, good job to everyone who stuck through with it until the end.

Rating 2/5.

where 3 is average of what I'll read.

this one is just below average, but not to the point that I would completely drop it. <<less

Hmm... Not sure where to put this. It is pretty good ultimate harem story but MC is bit whimpy and s*upid. There is also bit too much past life stuff and odd blank spots in story, but this definitely deserves drama tag

It can be bit annoying and enjoyable at same time. I would give this 3/5
