Amamiya Hiroto is unlucky. His life consisted of misfortune after misfortune, culminating in an unlucky death during an incident on a school boat trip, trying to save a girl he barely knew. After death, he met a god of reincarnation who requested that the hundred or so dead passengers—one of them being the girl he tried in vain to save—be reincarnated into another world.

Yet a series of unfortunate events forced Hiroto to reincarnate with even less luck than before, starting with nothing but a tremendous amount of Mana. His second life, far worse than his first, came to a cruel end.

However, upon meeting the god a second time, he was informed that there would be yet another reincarnation—one that had already been set in motion and could not be stopped. Not wanting Hiroto to live long, the god cursed him before he was reborn in the hopes that he would either die quickly or commit su*cide.

Hiroto was reborn once more as a half-Vampire, half-Dark Elf. A Dhampir. Not wanting a fourth life, he is determined to live this third life with the only things remaining from his previous lives—death-attribute magic and his enormous Mana pool.

The story has surprising twists and turns. It is worth a read if nothings else just because things don't tend to turn the way you think they would.

Plus the chapters are not overly short like some Light Novels out there which is nice.

Spoiler

A lot of people seem to criticize it for not being the typical non realistic bloody revenge story but that is misguided if you ask me.

I ask you this how long do you think you can be extremely angry for something that has be done to you and how much are you willing to give up for that vengeance?

This is way more realistic and interesting than some novels out there that only keep you reading by making you angry.

Plus the actions of the MC are quite calculated if you just think about it a second.

Many times in the beginning he is in no position to do anything flashy or risk being hunted down besides being plain realistic and understanding that some things are just a product of circumstance and the population has little say in the matter although not completely innocent either.

[collapse]

I believe the MC's choice of actions are realistic and quite fitting.

My only advice would be don't drop it too soon or judge it by appearance any complaints you may have will clear up as the story progresses.

There's actual character development here unlike typical one dimensional MC's you run into all the time.

There are numerous highly liked comments and reviews on this novel that clearly didn't read the story long enough or at all which makes me wish there was a down vote button or a way to reply because it misguides a lot of new potential readers.

He is never nice like many seem to believe he is calculating, realistic and pragmatic about what he can achieve in the moment and doesn't risk getting killed for s*upid short sighted reasons.

Yes he treats his allies nicely but that's just to be expected given his circumstances and how hard it is to find any allies to begin with for someone like him. <<less

This novel is simply amazing.

Relatale characters, simple but reasonable and likable MC (even if a bit soft, but waaaay better than the typical JP spineless protagonist).

Good world-building still have to go a bit deeper into the political situation (pretty simple till now) but it's still early.

Translation is 5 stars without doubt: don't remember finding relevant English mistakes (or even minor ones) and the speed is almost unbelievable considering the length of the chapters. We are talking about WuxiaNovel crazy speed!!

Dude I'm gonna be real, this story is f*cking weird.

I've been reading it on and off for years since it was one of my first ever novels. But trying to check it out again just makes me realize how weird and dry it can be.

Spoiler

It's got uncomfortable moments like the main character (a child) getting asked if they want to have a kid by other characters (Who are not children, and oh boy does this happen a lot iirc)

[collapse]

The chapters are laboriously long, honestly I can't help but feel for the translators. But at the same time this length doesn't mean more substance, it means regurgitating things over and over until they become paragraphs when they could and should just be sentences. Like I get it, world building is great. I love it. But when I finish a chapter and can summarize what happened in about two sentences despite having read what could be 3 chapters of other novels it gets a little tiring.

The power scaling is also wild, like to go too deep into it would be spoilers but it's to the point that each time his stat screen gets longer I get less and less interested in caring.

Spoiler

Hell half the stuff in it barely gets mentioned or feels like it has any relevance, it just exists there so that you can look at it and justify to yourself why it's okay that he can one-shot Gods.

[collapse]

And oh boy the side characters. Lord forbid you take a hiatus from reading cause if so then get prepared to meet your new best friend, the Wiki. There are so many damn side characters and so many of them are only relevant for their related arc. Beyond that you could honestly just replace the whole 'Privel said' part with 'Levia said' and it'd make no difference due to the characters having almost no defining personality traits besides awooga child MC and then whatever race they are. (It's like we're collecting a damn Pokedex at this point)

It does have a fantastic translation team and from what I can remember a very interesting start but like is it really worth it man. It's got cartoonishly evil villains, flat side characters, a stat screen written by an inflation fetishist and about half its character count is dedicated to oohing and aahing about cooking—the other 49% is about the classic trope of inventing modern things in a fantasy world. That 1%? That's the actual fights you look forward to—but they're so far and few between and usually over just as fast.

There's probably way more to talk about but the novels checked me out waaay too long ago for me to remember. Honestly look around a little more if you're tempted to read this, there's some great stories out there that'll leave you with positive thoughts when you think back on them, not this. <<less

I am doing this review because of some reviews I saw here. As for me it's one of the hidden gems I came across here.

First thing I want to clarify is, "this is not a story of some cringe edgelord who wants kill anyone and everyone for his revenge and acting like a piece of crap". If you expecting that kinds of story then leave here, it's not your cup of tea.

This is one of the best stories I have read so far with a consistent flow of the story with equally consistent power ups. The author even doing the regular status updates even for the side characters.

The world building is one of the good things about this story. The start can be a little drag but after 80 plus chapters the story is picking up the pace. This is one of the few stories I have read with a massive castings and doing a decent job at not forgetting the characters after some more chapters.

As for the complaints about love interests who had a child before asking Vandaleu, what? Are you guys came from some Chinese cultivation novels or something? Like only virg*nS are allowed?.

In this story, that won't even bother you cuz there so many different races with cultural differences. That kinds details are what makes this story even more interesting. The author even explained the circumstances for that premises and there are not even that many of the NON-virg*nS.

Sadly it's not a romance focused but that's not going to dampen the reading experience cuz it has a interesting plot line and massive world building.

And we even have some cute and at the same time not cute (for the Villain) other worldly adventure story of a

I just read a few chapters and have decided to give up on it.

First the god dude made a mistake in names (How many similar names come in front of a god of reincarnation?) He does not know about dark element (He told him he will have no element?) He did not try to solve the problem but even cursed him in his next reincarnation (He seems to have a lot of ability as he helped others and (he is not "evil?"))

If for nothing else he should destroy the... more>> world to ruin that reincarnator god's plan.

Plus I read that the dude that pretended to be him, stole his cheat, used his good deed to marry the women he save and kill him on his second life and he was going to be forgiven by him.

A Harem novel in which he never reaches adulthood? Plus it seems that losing the person he saved in cpt-1 was not enough, his new harem members will also procreate with others and he helps them. (Warning)

I find the fact that the genre of revenge changes to passive anti-hero slice of life, distasteful. Prologues are a glimpses of the future and will tell you about the path the novel will take, this was disappointing to say the least. Creating so many enemies just so they can be forgiven seems unnecessary. Not to mention he is too into following the "rules" of society even though the people hate him and so do the gods.

As for destroying the village and it's people that killed his mom, why should he care, it doesn't have to be for revenge but because they see him as the enemy and any of them that get strong would kill him if they get the opportunity, he will forever be marked as enemy anyway. Either way that is not the biggest low point in the story.

Yes the writing and translation is good. There is world building and a good balance between describing things and dialogue. But the start was too much of a letdown, 3 life time of sufferings so that MC can have a slice of life about food and occasionally eat souls. I can not close my eyes on these flaws.

Having so many 5 stars it seems that later the story stabilizes itself better, but the beginning is too much of a letdown so I will not rate it. <<less

I get what the others reviewers said about MC being too kind. Plus Van himself has acknowledged that he's insane. He is very self aware of his self and his hypocrisy sometimes. He even clearly states it. The reason MC is kind is because he wants to. Honestly he has killed a lot of his enemies in very gruesome ways. And he immediately gets rid of potential enemies too.

It's not that he's kind, he's insane. He's just being kind so that he can satisfy himself who longed for kindness in... more>> his previous lives. He himself has said this multiple times that he's doing good just to satisfy himself. And his way of doing something kind mostly involves killing others and turning people into zombies or vampires (which is evil by the world's standard but abides by Van's moral code)

So yes. This MC is not naive. Insane yes but not naive.

It's honestly a good read. Do try it.

The thing I like most about Van is that he has drawn some very clear lines for himself about what who he will hurt. He knows most of the human world has labeled him a monster. He draws the line and keeps himself from stepping over it to make sure he never truly becomes the monster they see him as.

I think what's most important to Van is to not become someone who steps on the weak. He spent over 30 years of his life in the first two worlds being abused by those who had more power. Van refuses to become like his Uncle or the Scientists of Origin.

He has never forgotten how hopeless he felt back then and how much he wished someone would save him. That's why he goes out of his way to help those in terrible situations too. Like a fallen adventurer who lost an arm, a starving dog, a woman who lost all her limbs, or even a former coach driver and his daughters who were mu*dered by bandits.

Also unlike the idiotic Bravers or Heinz he doesn't just pay lip service to helping them but actually follows through. He sticks with them to make sure they get back on their feet.

People say Van is insane, but honestly I always find that assessment a bit silly. He attacks and tortures his enemies but everyone in this world does. We've seen countless rulers in Lambda try to kill innocent civilians for their plots. Sure it might be strange to revive someone's loved ones as an undead, but he doesn't force the issue. I think a lot of us if given the choice would like to keep our loved ones around. Especially if you knew their souls might be going to an idiot like Rodidiot.

Also if we truly compare what Van has done with the actions of the Gods, Van at least tries to not involve innocents while the gods like Fitun for example don't care if countless mortals will die for his whims. No one here is morally superior here. Just enjoy the ride and praise Van sama <<less

Pretty good, especially the side story the gives a lot of info. It starts with classic irresponsible god giving powers and made a mistake Of our MC and start to live miserable and gains op and unique power for himself and starts your journey.

The down side is that power levelling and logic of that world is a mess, yeah I know that physics of that world is different and its over controlled by gods in they're advancement but my GOD the reasons are so simple. God of Law sees gun... more>> powder be like “EVILLL” cause of his hero says its evil... come on now. Your a God who live more than many years and saw countless sins and you just listen to your chosen hero as if your worshipping him instead?questionable but okay God are simple minded there and maybe it will be explained later and many more.

But it was enjoyable and interesting take on new things. MC and his friends develops to OPNESS and character development as the story progress but theres a lot of haters there who rates it badly. Hear what I say, THIS IS THE BEST NOVEL for me if you had problems of it I say its MAGIC and if you say it doesn’t have logic I say theres GODS/EVIL GODS AND MAGIC so stop complaining and read it. <<less

from what reviews i've seen here, it seems it has always focused on the "revenge for mom" and its argument on whether he should've been more revenge-y than letting her killers off lightly, or even just indirect killing them would've been good.

most reviews/complaints also gives out the typical OPness of MC, but that's par for the course, specially if it's a JP novel. I stopped minding it long ago. Also included in this are the s*upid MCs and the s*upid antagonists. Par for the course... more>> on how clueless these writers are on properly writing one.

for me though, I direct my criticism to one of my growing dislike that JP novels seriously focuses on young MCs, putting out hundreds and hundreds of chapters yet MC is still a BABY!!!

make it heavy on plot armor, really OP skills/abilities/etc., even throw in a harem (exception, this is an auto "i won't even read it", I won't even give that 100ch.), but this growing gripe of baby MCs is too much. What's worse crime being commited here, is that usually, these novels will have a harem tag too, meaning these women are going s*x crazy/h**ny for MCs who are physically a baby yet they already want this baby's babies.

does that make sense?? No, right?

what these authors forget are the important timeskips, that at least gives these MCs an after-puberty stage and a legitimate excuse for these harem tags before writing these "sluts for baby dicks"

and thus I end this review for such a novel with a great opener a big "disappointment"

update: it would seem that this one has another trope that has been slowly climbing its way to my list of unspeakable frustrating trope - japanese foods are the nectars of the gods.

no drastic changes on the review, just adding on the disappointment with this discovery. <<less

I Simply love this novel... I love everything about it except for cooking sections :D tho that's only because i've read so many novels with cooking that it's just the same old stuff for me..

Edit: i've seen so many people complain about the MC been wimpy and not wanting revenge and this and that and giving it a rating of 2 or 1 star after only reading up to 30 or 50 chapters.... all I have to say is: are you ret*rded ?

As a writer myself I have to say that this is a masterpiece that I would compare to Overlord only without the main character developing split personalities, at least not in the normal sense because technically all of his are copies of the original and don’t really become a new personality.

his first two lives are absolute sh*t but having and being able to experience a loving mother for the first time allows him to cool his head long enough to be more rational.

Spoiler

after his mother is tortured and killed he is mentally corrupted and tho he is still weak he comes up with an excellent way to get vengeance on those that he can at the moment; by turning all the walls, buildings, and fields that provided the people protection from monsters and wildlife as well as their food supplies into golems that literally got up and walked off, leaving them defenseless and hungry and no other option but to fend for themselves and or evacuate to another town obviously leaving the asswipe in charge to his own ruin where it will take many years just to rebuild and that’s only if he can convince the people that the place isn’t cursed lol ?

[collapse]

it will take a long time for him to get full vengeance on some things but when he does it is great, sometimes he gets vengeance fairly quickly.

he does come to peace with several of the reincarnated individuals but not all of them, all of them are decided with logical reasons like kill those who try to kill him or those who are his companions/ people he cares about.

he doesn’t really have an interest in having multiple love interest but they start accumulating regardless some mainly due to his death attributes attraction and the guider jobs he accumulates but some fall for his personality and the females aren’t interested in s*x with a baby/child they are willing to wait until he reaches maturity. Yes some do have other partners due to not having a concept of marriage, and also have babies while waiting for Van to grow up.

their are several stereotypes but they are executed well and there’s several characters that break the mold of usual character types. Characters stay true to their personalities and quirks and those who become fanatics do so at a progressive rate matching the guidance levels.

character sheets are updated and kept up with well throughout the process of the novel and is a great way to show the progression of not only the main characters but also some of the minor ones.

the world building is amazing and has variety and the city building/ empire building is well thought out and executed in progressive waves that are creative and insightful as the resources, technology and labor force available increases making the best possible advancements.

he does start craving Japanese foods and tries to recreate them something’s take a while for him to get done but it gives a short break from some of the hustle and bustle before more of the faster paced things return and make it hard to put down again lol.

the chapters are on the longer side and the translation is one of the best ones I have had the joy of reading.

the biggest downside is that it takes a while for chapters to be translated but that’s understandable with the amount that is being translated so not really a downside, more a matter of my lack of patience lol.

there is plenty more I could say but I don’t want to leave too many spoilers. <<less

I won't go into further explanations and whatnot, I'll be saying just a few things:
This is good. This is very good, and very rewarding, IF you continue reading and don't drop this early on. Flawless translation aside, the author is very good at linking characters together one way or another, the story seem very thrilling, and the Main character is actually an interesting character, Not nilly-willy "I will save everyone and spare them all!" nor "I want revenge on EVERYONE!", his character is well written.

Though I have to say,... more>> I absolutely understand those who gave a negative rating to this story, since they didn't give it a chance and read far enough to see its true charm. <<less

First off my review of this novel is the best. best novel Ive read and Ive read a lot...

Now out of curiosity ıve come back to read the comments and Ive seen kagillion people writing sh--t about the novel even though theyve either read so little and just geniuenly dont know the characters especially the MC that they dont know why he would do his decisions. Or they saw him taking an action they personally dont sit well with them, your not the MC people and hes gonna take actions... more>> that differ from your viewpoint of the world sometimes. Because circumstances make the people and you were not in his shoes for the 40-50 years if you add up all the years he lived and he never lived happy. If you did not need to eat a rat to survive like he did no you'll probably not understand him sometime soon. That being sad though the story is captiving and is still for me, Ive read it through 3 times and its still being translated. There are generic concepts like elves and gods and vampires and humans and magic and such but here's what I love people;

These concepts are revised properly with unique stories that sit well with the unique world of the story

like I said there are right out generic races but also there are new races that the author invented that makes things more complex and that is rather whole in overall.

For the first few hundred chapters the MC is in either in danger physically or emotionly which you might like.

and theres sooo much else going on

Now I dont think this will be a spoiler bu letme say this person MC is not somebody like you or me. And the story is better for it okay. He's not emotionless altough hes on the face and try to read it I hope youll stick around to reading all of it this story is delicious. <<less

this novel is the best i've red so far, not like some of the typical easy going isekai story, story is hard but some parts are light too. The MC is good at decision-making, merciless most of the time and he kills to protect, revenge and kill his enemy but he is friendly and loving towands his subbordinates and there were branches of enemies, the author likes to introduce all the enemy at once and want to kill the MC which is good because you can see the different plans... more>> and pov on each one of them while the MC uses his skills to gather info to prepare for them.

one of the fun parts is the world building and the rpg essence is there to keep track on the characters stat you can see the MC keeps getting stronger from the age 1 lol.

In my opinion this is just a fantastic novel and deserves all the praise it gets. It sort of ignores regular genres and defines itself as its own work. The author did an amazing job at setting up the story at the start so that new and interesting characters could be brought in with reasonable back stories and strong potential opponents are just waiting in the wings with abilities that would worry anyone. I know a lot of people have some.. Questionable complaints about this story but to me they... more>> are either not valid complaints or they just didn't really think it through. To keep it short, if you are looking for an actual harem story with a thick revenge plot, this is not it. The novel does not follow any of the rules of traditional genres like I said above, if you are expecting something from this novel you will be disappointed. But, if you are willing to sit along for the ride and read the story as is, I think it's really hard to find to many faults in the story. <<less

It has a good premise, good world building, but its character development is lacking. The main characters personality is inconsistant and to make him stronger the author just gives him a bunch of random powers. He is like one of his own patchwork zombies. At the chapter I got to (95) everything was jumbled and I lost interest.

A weird mix of normal isekai kingdom building* harem + revenge and insanity. As you'd expect it doesn't meld** well.

It's got all the flaws of both that I will not fully list and the only thing making me read further is the desire to get to the end.

* that looks to me more like playing house (though it is becoming marginally better at my current point—c85).

** at first I was reading it with a revenge, then normal isekai with revenge subplot mindset but then at my current point it started... more>> going into the trigger happy psycho + bipolar (cause psycho killer doesn't mesh with the normal isekai thingy) direction and my brain can't take it. The result of combining the two tones made it more of a trigger happy psycho story, so... Yeah, it's a psycho getting very distracted builing a kingdom and collecting harem, then getting revenge and becoming god*** at the end, I guess.

Since there's "so much hate" I'd rather read a more determined psycho if the author really wants to go in that direction.

Some kudos:

- the world seems really well-thought-out

- the chapters are long (though there were noticeable pads I see)

- the initial concept was good (the world and the premise, not the psycho-building-a-kingdom)

With that said, with the way the story was going into the kingdom building normal isekai route, I'd rather have it go the redemption/rehab/growth route and not going full blown psycho.

Just for the effort (?) and quality (in comparison to other isekais) I'd give this a 4, but overall for me this is a 3/5.

*** Just my guess. But that's where the trope was going.

Now despite the low reviews I feel this novel is on a very high level of quality. So I'll start with the biggest elephant in the room that is the beginning few chapters. Now as people have pointed out in the reviews the story begins to seem like it will be one big ol revenge story however that is false. This won't be your typical guy gets betrayed spends the entire time toturing and hunting down those who betrayed him story like Nidome No Yuusha. However revenge is still a... more>> factor in this story just not the main focus Van (the MC I'll Refer to him as this from now on in the review) still desires revenge for the things that have happened to him and his loved ones. And he does get his revenge on people throughout the story I will not be going into details on it for spoilers sake nor where they take place story wise. However another major factor to this story is the world building and the characters. There is ALOT of world building in death mage we get more info of the world at the end of each chapter and there are even appendixes and chapters set up to just expand the world further however there is still a sizeable amount written naturally in the story. Rather than simply follow someone through a world that all we know about it is how mystical and gorgeous it is. We get to see and understand how the people living in the world view it even how the gods of the world view it's development and the life within it. And that segments us into another section the characters now I won't say that there aren't cliches amongst characters however for the most part a cliche will never make up the entirety of a character unless they're a very minor character with little importance most major characters and side characters you get to understand throughout the story and get to understand even further through the side chapters and extra chapters which go through their perspectives and lives as we get to know them more. One other important thing I hadn't even gotten into yet was the translation. Yoshi's translation alongside the editors for this series make this such a blast to read and they thoroughly understand how to get the feel of the story across. The overall quality of the translation actually beats a few professional translations I've read before and has since raised my standards of translations on this website a bit above what I should probably have. Now there can be a few very minor errors but I never tended to mind or even really find them while reading. So my main thought this novel is amazing and in my opinion has around the same quality as kumo desu ga Nani ka and overlord. So as for my rating couldn't be anything but 5/5 <<less

Author has ZERO idea how personalities works The novel started out with a great premise sure there some plotholes and dumb excuses used in the first few chapters that get no explanation whatsoever but it's bearable at least, then author goes batsh*t crazy and MC literally has no idea if he wants revenge or not, The power system is complete and utter BS, The History of the world and the world building is just indescribably bad, and MC apparently has an Off/On switch for plot armor as he can go... more>> through hell for little to no reason and then do the dumbest sh*t and have no consequence.

All in all this novel getting a 2 star is only because of the translation and the premise everything else is utter garbage at best. <<less

I really want to like this novel, I at least don't hate it but its just so boring. Normally long chapters are huge plus but when characters are typical Japanese cringe and large parts of story are written in day to day with nothing happening, it is a terrible. Beginning was greatly disappointing. Add on that MC is extremely OP yet feels weak. In any other novel with ruthless or scheming MC would of turned world upside down with the same powers.

Hands off! One of the best novels I have ever read. From where should I start?

    1. Story profession: One of the best aspect of this novel is the story and how it progress... You never get bored or never does it repeat it self. The villains are not mindless evils and actually has real objectives, MC is an level minded and truly relatable. Everyone would do the more or less same thing in his position. He is not overly good nor overly bad. Each chapters has something to add to the story and almost no filler. Its really enjoyable ride.
    2. Character depth: What can I say... Its amazing to think that a writer would so much thought and so much effort in each and every characters. A huge list of characters and each has something to say. All most all has a back story and all plays a good role in their respective field. From a goblin to a nameless merchant, they don't pop up without reason nor they disappear. The writer puts the reader in their position and lets you their point of view. Its just refreshing.
    3. The Mc: Though its a personal opinion, I like mature and clever MC. Vandaleu is lot more mature and a lot more reasonable than any other 20-30+ year old MC, despite being a little kid and there is a really good reason behind it too. His motivation, his goals are clear. He grows himself and his companions with him. He depends on others just as much they depend on him.
    4. Translation: One of the best translator on the net. It's almost has no difference from a actual English novel and the quality of the translation is really good. The writer has good japanese humor, and the translator does his utmost capture it. TL notes and explanations are plenty, which is obviously a great help. The chapters are really big so I can understand why the releases are slow (1/week).
  1. This novel is overall a really good read.
