The Age of Gods has long since ended, their voices no longer heard on the continent of Douluo. Humanity, standing on the shoulders of legends from its history, advanced soul technology to inconceivable heights. The humans of Douluo invented weapons of mass destruction, mechanized armor, and living metals. With these advancements, they went on to conquer the oceans and discovered two new continents. To fuel these new technologies, humanity hunted the soul beasts to the very brink of extinction.

Once the dominant force of Douluo, the few surviving soul beasts now hide in the darkest recesses of their last sanctuary. The weakest have all been hunted, leaving only the strongest to scheme in the heart of the forest. The soul beasts, not willing to fade away, plot an uprising for their survival. In the midst of this, a god from a long forgotten era awakens in the depths of the Great Star Dou Forest to seek vengeance for the soul beasts.

As darkness encroaches from the abyss, hope is found in a young boy who holds a power beyond divinity within himself—Tang Wulin! Hope for both humanity and the soul beasts, as the bridge between the two. He finds his way into the fabled halls of Shrek Academy, where he learns to wield his prodigious powers, makes friends and finds allies, eventually rising to become a towering leader.

As he learns to harness his strength, danger lurks within the shadows as the various factions of humanity maneuver and plot to usurp Shrek Academy. Tang Wulin discovers the threat to the only world he knows as he sinks deeper into the intrigue. Meanwhile, camouflaged by the chaos and unbeknownst to the humans, the soul beasts’ plot continues to steadily advance.

To defend what he loves and reclaim what was lost, Tang Wulin must seek out the legacies of legends past and unlock the full might of the Golden Dragon King!

Ive never read the translated version but I've read the Raws till quite far.

The development was quite interesting.

Spoiler

If you read far enough, which I think the eng translation will not be arriving anytime soon, you can see that the WuLing is just too OP. He even has fangirls all over the place, a lot of female character fell in love with him.

And for those who are curious, it seems that his dragon blood plays a more important role to his OP ness than his original battle spirit

[collapse]

quite a fun piece to read, just look out for GuYe, she is the female MC.

just a negative point is that his OP is a bit too illogical <<less

I like this series. It has serious potential. The pacing is excellent, with none of the reward-after-reward events that Wuxia novels incorporate as standard. The main character loses, and gets really unlucky. However, he pulls through out of sheer guts and determination, while also not being a complete bastard about it. It also has something I rarely see in fiction like this - side characters with character development! I actually remember their names, which is surprising for the genre.

I see a lot of reviews talking about how the series doesn't follow the spirit of the previous, MC is OP, etc.. Let me put into perspective that in a new age where technology has reached incredible heights, if his strength was overbearing then he would be out shined by it. In reality, Wulin wasn't even that strong by the end of DD3. Yahuo and Tang San both had obtained god positions, in case of Tang San he was a friggin Godking.

The plot is certainly different from the other series,... more>> but to many people forget who is the real enemy in the series.
Spoiler

News flash, the abyss was never the enemy. We know very well that after reading that is was all a scheme by Tang San. His scheme neutralizes the "enemy" only to reveal the real antagonist, Gu Yuena. You know the same silver dragon who contemplated killing Wulin several times? Yeah her - she and the spirit beasts have been scheming all along. Wulin unfortunately was weaker than her, he never was stronger than the FL at any point in DD3.

[collapse]
Its imho a great twist which kept me interested, we knew the truth from chapter 1 but were waiting to see how it plays out. The Abyss was kind of flung in there, while the evil soul master were only a backdrop. The plot as different, yes but c'mon do you really want the same plot. Not to mention the ending really sets the stage of DD4 which so far has been pretty interesting and will like become hella good in the later parts.

I feel people are to judgemental/critical on it being a 3rd part of the Douluo Dalu series, rather than how the series stands on its own. Like yes it wasn't perfect and wasn't as similar as DD1 and DD2 are... but do you want them same story retold to you? Overall its weaker than DD2 but likely better than DD1 as plot and storyline go. DD2 actually had a plot and added alot to that.. but DD1 had nearly zero plot other than grind to defeat the boss. All I'm trying to say- the series has evolved, you may or may not like that; I did though. <<less

Personally I loved it a lot. I won't give an in-depth review here; if you like the other Douluo Dalus then you'll definitely like this one.

One of the reasons why I gave it 2 stars:

  • short as hell chapters
  • many fillers which stretch main plot endlessly
  • low level of humour, similar to many anime/ecchi type
  • story does not mature with time, characters after almost 500 chapters are still kids tough with more strenght, wisdom and more mature bodies, they still are kids at heart
  • mecha so far are really weak.. Even tough they might look impressive, kids with their powers are still better
  • main character is hard working but he still have cheat abilities..
  • No one strong to compete with, especially in mortal fight
  • Evil and Good are too far apart, it seems that there is nothing in between
  • 12 year old kids might like this kind of story, but after reading 300 chapters, they should read something more mature. Lets say for 16 year olds?
  • Basically they could sum up this story to 10-100 chapters at most and almost nothing of it would be lost.. So its a huge waste of time to read many similar things repeated endlessly
  • no skip time.. So even tough many things of no importance happen. Author still tries to write it in as most detailed way possible.. It would be damn good thing for a game which gamers learn of its lore by exploring endless world but not in a Novel..
  • I'm not a writer, but after reading some novels with more mature theme, I no longer enjoy stories for kids. They teach nothing useful.

Those that think that this is just a repeat of DD1 might be slightly mistaken, given the circumstances of the MC as well as the journey he has to take. LDK introduces many new elements: manufactured souls, mechas, battle armours and the MC is kind of similar to the MC of DD2 where he starts of weak, but the two seem to have different ways of coping. It feels like there is more to come and am quite excited at how this story will progress.

There are a lot of reviews here on this website that have been written by people who are still in the middle of the book. The problem with this is that from their perspective this story is full of tropes and going nowhere fast. This is a completely understandable position until you actually finish the story. What you have to remember is that this was written as a web novel, and the slow pacing actually works pretty well when you are only getting a few chapters every week. I agree... more>> that there are a lot of tournament arks that can get kind of repetitive, but the underlying story is great. The author clearly didn't want to use time skips, so instead we get pretty much everything that happens to these characters. If you read it a little bit at a time it works pretty well as you do form bonds with the characters without hitting burnout, but if you try to read it all at once it gets old real quick as the urge to skim though the chapters until the next major development of the main story line comes around. This story is nearly 2000 chapters long after all. If you ever feel like skipping, just put it down for a while and come back to it later. The ending is pretty damn good from a writing perspective, but it is also very painful (I cried. A lot.). More thoughts on the story/ending in spoiler tag. There are no actual spoilers, just some general hints for the purpose of discussion. If you want to find out how it ends exactly, go read it yourself!
Spoiler

The ending... oh man. This story is quite good at getting us to empathize with the protagonist and his emotional state, including his optimistic outlook on life. However, one character in particular is always reminding us that the world doesn't work that way and this story is going to end in fire. Both the protagonist and the reader ignore this, as overcoming all odds to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat is a core part of the protagonist's character and the story as a whole. Anything can be overcome if you just work hard and never give in to anything, be it your enemy, fear, pain, self-doubt, etc. This theme throughout the story leads the reader (and the protagonist) to ignore the warnings and assume that everything will be fine, following the trope that the series (and the genre) is so fond of. Only this time... it doesn't go that way at all. Some things can't be avoided and some problems have no good solutions. Despite the ending being foreshadowed multiple times it still manages to subvert expectations at least twice. Once when the story sucker-punches the audience after tricking them into thinking everything will be fine, then again with how the final confrontation actually goes down (can't really clarify this as it is spoiler territory). The nice thing is, unlike some stories, these plot twists are actually foreshadowed clearly and make sense. Too many stories pull a switcheroo that makes no sense whatsoever and/or completely comes out of the blue (looking at you GoT). This story doesn't do that, and it is all the more impactful for it. Unlike in GoT this story was clearly written from the beginning with the ending in mind and the characters all remain true to themselves and act in a self-consistent manner. I would actually have really hated the ending (not because it is bad, just because it is upsetting) if not for DD4. If the ending makes you mad go read the next book in the series and you will like it a lot more.

To be honest all Soul Land series begins really good, but falls off later due to unknown reasons expect for probably Soul Land 1. It starts it with the standard Soul Land the MC is old enough to perform his Martial Spirit awakening and awakens a mutated BSG.
Spoiler

Along with the Golden Dragon King Bloodline

[collapse]

Below will all mainly be spoilers, so read at your own risk.

Positive : Spoilers

What makes Soul Land 3 different from 1 and 2 is family. He has a loving family that loves him right from the start. Also, a SISTER that he found. They support him and wants what is the best for him. A great example, is when he awakens BSG and both his parents want him to give up being a Spirit Master, but in the end they still supported him. They even wanted him to learn blacksmith, so even if he isn't able to become a Spirit Master he could still make a living through blacksmith. In Soul Land 2 the MC's mother is already died and in Soul Land 1 his father is pretty much indifferent until he awakens his Martial Spirit.

As the story of Soul Land 3 goes on MC starts losing the things that are dear to him aka his family. (Not dying just disappearing).
Spoiler

Parents will die later when they meet again and something will happen to sister

[collapse]
As a result, he develops a fear of losing someone that is close to him. This could be shown when Gu Yuena the FMC leaves for Spirit Pagoda. This is his drive sort kinda like the other soul land MC, but with different reasons. Soul Land 1 he was initially just curious about this new world and it was when he meet Xiao Wu that he wanted to become stronger to protect her. Soul Land 2 is to get revenge for his mother. Soul Land 3 not wanting to lose someone again. MC is not a p**sy.

Spoiler

He had s*x with Gu Yuena TWO TIMES. First time was when a another girl that liked him druged him, but Gu Yuena TP to Wuling kicking the girl under the bed forcing her to listen to them having s*x for around 24 hours. Second, time was when the so call final battle was about to happen. Funny thing was this allowed him to break through in cultivation both times. First time he became a title Duoluo. I forgot the second time. Also, he break through level 95 by kissing the girl xd

[collapse]

Negative : Spoilers

As the story goes on the use of Soul Skill diminishes. It is all about self created techniques. Soul Ring skills doesn't even get fully mentioned for all the other characters such as his friends. We don't know the names or what they do. Soul Ring basically becomes a way to show off such as "OMG he has all Red Ring" ok that is it. One thing that I feel really frustrated about Soul Land 3 is when people see his all Golden Ring they don't react much because it is Blood Ring and not Soul Ring. They will be like "is this Soul Ring no, I sense the fluctuation of blood" ok thats it.
Spoiler

The thing I hate the most was that after the MC's foster parents die he forgets about it. Yup you didn't miss read it. At the final battle with the force that killed his parents the MC doesn't mention a single word of revenge. Although, it is call final it is actually not xd, but close.

[collapse]

Another thing is his fusion skill with Gu Yuena, which is only shown up to 2nd form out of 9. Also, he doesn't completely breaks the seal leaving 2 more. However, I'm guessing all of this will be covered in Soul Land 4. If you are a FAN of BSG you might not like what happens later because he doesn't really use it much.

Ending was kinda weird

Spoiler

They die at the last chapter of Soul Land 3, but shows up Soul Land 4 in the first few chapters. That is basically saying they didn't die. However, it is a interval of 10, 000 year for all soul land series, but it just feels weird for me because I started soul land 4 right after 3.

[collapse]

Overall

I enjoyed this LN and regardless of the negatives I am giving this a 5 star. If you want to know if the MC is strong probably yea. Fun Fact

His so call sister gave him a rainbow gemstone of some sort, but later it was never mentioned again.

More Spoilers if you want for Soul Land 2.5

Spoiler

The reason the Golden Dragon King power is in the MC is because in Soul Land 2.5 the god of destruction went trisomy 21 and wanted to do some ret*rded stuff causing some issues and the escape of the Golden Dragon King that was imprison in the douluo divine realm (there are multiple god realms, which will be mention in soul land 3.5). 2.5 took place in the divine realm. Tang San defeats the GDK with the help of the other gods, but in order to boost the power of the tang san's son the GDK decides to give his core to tang san's son. What a great dragon. JK he did it to get revenge on Tang San, but Tang San sealed the power and he had to TP Wuling his son to Douluo Planet with the help of MC of Soul Land 2 (Huo Yuhao) aka his son in law. After that the divine realm got s**ked into this hole and the god of destruction and goddess of life died. Destruction died b/c he was a idiot and life exploded herself because the destruction power will fall on douluo planet and only the power of life could suppress destruction. I forgot how destruction died maybe to redeem himself by exploding his god core to suppress the big hole. Life and Destruction are a couple, so she died because he is died (I do not mean when one couple dies the other dies, but instead they choose to kill themselves to be with the other even in death) and also to protect douluo planet cause in soul land 3 some people did die from the fragments of destruction, but was also saved due to fragments of life, although not human anymore.

Greenhorns raised in protective environment. Only spars and tournaments. Rarely there'll be some accidents and missions which are somewhat adventurous. I am now in 800+ chapters, MC and his friends have always been students of an academy and don't have independent thoughts or goals (except for one). Just following the orders and being students without individual thinking. Academy arranges everything for them (resources or trials). If it were a solo MC travelling to this world, he would've trapped them 100 different ways before letting them off out of pity.

Explanations/Descriptions are... more>> way too lengthy. There are well written from a writer's pov, but not so from audience's view. This is way too 'shonen' for me. Hopefully it gets better as MC graduates and wishing for the war to start soon.. Tournaments (not life-death fights) fill 40-50% of the chapters.

Edit (super spoiler) :
Spoiler

Well, there's drastic change in MC's academic life as his academy gets destroyed. It's been 200 chapters since then and it's still the same boring stuff. No thoughts of revenge, only of restoration (naive)

I really wanted to like it because of mecha building aspect that didn't interfere with individual character strengthening (because weak-to-strong is my cup of tea).

But man, the MC is a total doormat when it comes to interacting with girls, and they also treat him as such...

Another entry in the Douluo Dalu series. Unlike DD2, it will be hard to read DD3 without reading any of the previous entries first. If you want to read this, do read the summaries first.

I REALLY love the fact that the world was built based upon an established world. It's a world where there is not only 1 MC, in this entry we welcomed the 3rd MC.

As per usual, it's been 10, 000 years after DD2, Spirit Pagoda is a big organization now and Shrek is still standing proud. The... more>> world is now fully invested in soul technology, it's amazing seeing the world evolved from DD1 to this. If you read DD series then you'll notice that the world is not that big, but the simple fact that it's been spread upon 3 stories spanning 20, 000 years, made this one of the best world building Wuxia novel.

The MC will start weak, very weak in fact, and we'll follow him climbing through the power ladder as he unlocks the hidden power sealed within him. This MC is also a prodigy in blacksmithing of which a lot of exciting scenes came from.

The side characters are the usual TJSS style with fairly strong side characters to accompany MC, a lot of pairing, and no harem. It's also the first time I see some LGB characters in a Chinese novel, although it's not highlighted, for obvious reasons.

Now, the action, there are several facets to battle in DD3, all these soul tools gave birth to stuffs like cars, planes, laser guns, and most importantly, Mecha and Battle Armor. Compared to the previous entries, I feel like the soul spirits really took a back seat this time especially at titled douluo levels. Soul tools in battle IS great, but just like the previous entries, it messes up with the power system.

At early stage, it was all great, those with battle armor can be 2 or 3 stages stronger or certain mecha color is as strong as this level, but as we progress it became more and more convoluted, especially during the final war where it's basically TJSS doing whatever he wanted. Even Red Rings doesn't hold that much meaning anymore, it is still being praised and awed upon, but in battle it doesn't do much, which is quite disappointing imo.

And here comes the word padding. I used to forgive TJSS for the word padding, but I think it's a bit too much this time. First comes the moniker for this novel, DD3: Legend of The Tournament King, seriously, there are too many tournaments. I think there is no volume where there isn't some kind of tournament in it, there is something for everything, exchange program - tournament, diplomacy - tournament, defending honor - tournament, hell even the final war, while it's red hot, it stopped for a f*ckin tournament.

There's also the fact that TJSS keep using Battle Armor not like an equipment, but like a move. If the opponent is stronger, he'll held back and not use the battle armor until the MC can take him off guard, if the opponent is about the same then they'll hold off their battle armor because using it first = losing in pride. Unlike DD2 now almost everyone has a battle armor. Combine this with the tournament and TJSS flowery words, oh boy, you're in for a lengthy ride.

After all this, the ending was pretty meh. There is the final war arc before the closing arc, the ending on the final war was disastrous in my opinion, thankfully I really like the closing arc, so i'd let this go.

Well, in the end is this a good novel? Well... there's no doubt that for those who has read DD1 and 2, this novel adds so much color to the world and will be a great addition before DD4. I won't deny the lengthy progress of building douluo dalu plane into what it is now, it really is one of the most well built story world in Chinese novels i've read.

But on the other hand, this DD3 feels flat to me, there are good moments but it was overwhelmed by the sheer amount of monotonous tournaments, from 1900+ chapters, I think at least 800 chapters was done in tournaments.

It could've been much better, 3 stars for DD fans, 2 stars for those wanting to pick this as a stand-alone. <<less

If I havent finished this I would have rated it much much lower. Also note that I read it all in one go, didnt wait for chapters. Could adjust my reading speed accordingly. Mostly just glance through boring fights

CONS:

Sometimes author forgets irrelevant details or just changes minor stuffs/characters backstory. I don't mind this much.

Other 6 shrek monsters are kinda weak and overshadowed too much. Near 2k chapters and you would think author would flesh out their characters, but no, they are kinda useless in the end. Kinda fun characters,... more>> but forgetable.

The biggest thing that irked me out is the battles. Literally every problem is solved battle tournament-esq style. Need to infiltrate and steal stuff? Will have multiple 1 v 1 or 5 v 5 duels. A war that will affect the whole continent? 9 v 9s duels? Seriously? Don't expect war strategies etc, expect that everything will be solved by douluo duels. Believe me, there are too much duel that you would rather just skip. Sometimes they are fine, some are just out of place

PROS

I have read spoilers and knew the ending but I still liked it. I think the series are that great writing wise, but there are many moments where that author skillfully draws emotions from the reader. The FC is someone you can both hate and love. She has her own thoughts and responsibilities. More fleshed out compare to dd1 and dd2 FCs

Timeskips are rare. You would think that the MC hasn't grown up and still acts like a kid. But he really does grows up before you realize it. (Though I have no idea why he still rides soul trains, he never learns* you'd only understand this sentiment of mine once you read it)

Overall, its worth a read specially if you read dd1 and dd2. Lots of fluff, but it has redeeming moments. <<less

To be honest, I feel like DD2 was the best among the trilogy, it had quite a relatable character from weak to strong and the story was much more interesting as Yuhao went through his infiltration missions as he got higher in ranks. In DD3, Wulin feels invincible, its not even a joke how overpowered he is. The titled douluo seem to have been underpowered when their facing but that is mostly due to most higher ranked opponents he faces having a dragon martial soul. Bit of spoiler, but not... more>> really as it is pretty obvious from the title as Wulin has the bloodline of the Golden dragon king hence he always suppressed his opponents with dragon bloodlines

Another point to bring up is basically the tang sect became wulin's DLC store for power ups or invincibility frames when the need arises.

Next is the romance, as usually we always have our devoted vanilla love interests which I don't mind.

I can't say I like the ending nor can I say I liked it. I understand the author went through a tragedy as he lost his wife as he was writing this and I felt that he should have stopped or gone on hiatus as the ending manifested his sadness and as his reader I feel like we can feel his pain so I think people should keep this in mind when rating as at the end of the day, Tang Jia Jian Shao is human just like all of us and condolences to his wife.

there is such a thing as being too OP. Being such an accomplished author, TJSS should've understood that instead of overpowering all the tang-surnamed ret*rds, we have seen this before and is about to happen again in dd4. The Characters? Oh yeah, the staple Mr. Perfect, well-mannered MC and a complete bit*h of a fem MC (Although she gets SOME char. growth, at least that's SOMETHING).

The thing is, although there is a gap of 10k years, changes were brought on too abruptly and the readers may find it hard to... more>> love the sci-fi blend in it, At least I did, DD2 did it perfect enough for me, but this one does not.

Every soul beats, plants, etc revers the MC and makes him op enough that he can fight douluos at rank 60+, even in terms of rank skipping, this was too much. He just doesn't give a damn about soul skills, self-created skills etc (Ig his daddy Tang DID give some skills, but I won't consider them HIS)
It's just "bloodline shitstorm go boom!" whenever he uses his main powers, martial souls are sSHAT ON. And it's not just him, every other char. finds something to replace the soul skills and become too OP. I mean, the MC doesn't have any original / Self-made skills, that's the ugly truth, almost all of it was 'given' to him in a way. At least TS with his too OP personality and stuff and Yuhao, though a raging brainlet, made skills that could be said to BELONG TO THEM.

Spoiler

golden-dragon placing his core in him as a baby cuz he was too weak and all of his other skills originating from his daddy, ig it runs in Tangs...

[collapse]

the mechas are honestly a bit out of place, sure tech. advancements, I might be biased in this case, but it shouldn't have made soul skills irrelevant! the MC and FMC
Spoiler

decided it's better to die and leave their kid alone, than to fight, honestly after all they'd done, not fighting wasn't even an option...

[collapse]

frankly, DD WAS legendary, and DD2 combined new concepts perfectly into the mix, after that everything went downhill, FAST (excluding 2.5 and 3.5, which were pretty good). But at least the romance isn't dead, and there is some huge world-building (Which was done at the stake of char. building).

But I got to give it to the ending, that, was bitter, REALLY bitter. It was honestly the best part of the story for me.

I think you can sum up this series with one word. Boring.

Compared to the heights of Douluo Dalu 2, this new series is the literary equivalent of scraping the barrel for scraps and finding only the scum.

The premise itself is interesting, showcasing the technological development since the supremacy of the Sun-Moon Empire from Douluo Dalu 2, but it rapidly degenerates into a by-the-numbers wuxia plotline with uninspired combat and equally uninspired characters. In terms of general plot, it's like photocopying the predecessor than taking out the fun parts and calling... more>> it different.

The power escalation in this series is so absurd, the main character has broken 2 out of 18 seals by the point of the story I'm at and he can probably already bench press trucks. The fact that he's overpowered to this extent yet is still slumming it with 14 year olds completely removes any tension from the series because no matter how the author tries to tell us he is struggling, he clearly isn't. It is telling that the only real difficulty the character ever faces is financial. He can't afford to feed himself, not because he's poor, but because he eats way too much, and he needs to consume expensive treasures to break his seals. Did I mention he regenerates by eating? Of course, it won't do to have this MC have any struggles whatsoever, so people queue up to pay for all his meals and give him free treasures.

Whenever you see a main character wielding absolute strength and absolute regeneration, honestly you can flush the series and you won't be missing much. In addition, none of the side characters so far except for one have any real personality or indeed serve any plot purpose other than worshipping the MC or falling in love with him. That's how bad it is.

This series doesn't even qualify for a one star. <<less

Just a warning the first 15 or so chapter are more of a chronicle of events up until he reached age 9 then it goes more into a regular story mode.

This author is use to medieval setting rather than modern/scifi setting so the writing gives me the impression it is taking place in a ancient setting but he tries to throw in modern conveniences that do not seem to fit or he does not bother describing.

Spoiler

An example is there is mechs however the only description that is given is color or size but doesn't explain at all how they look beyond that other than one mention that some may look like armor. Unless the item is something that was used in the ancient times or resembles something from those times the author avoids talking about them all together. I really had no clue the period was set more modern until it mentioned trains and buses
