A lot of good stuff I can tell you, nice mix of comedy, drama (the suspense is non-existence and you can see the plot a mile away), messy fight scenes and quite a few good historical stuff about China (and Japan surprisingly) and their actual real life cultivators like Wang Chongyang (王重阳), Zhang Zhi Shun (张至顺) and An Bei Qing Ming (安倍晴明). Love is in the air so much that I nearly screamed "riajuu go explode!!!" Usual nationalism is in, no surprise.

Of all the skills in this novel, there are... more>> these two quite notable:

Five Dragons coiling the Pillar

Beauty Playing the Flute

Yes these are innuendos. <<less

Was good for the first few bits. However, the racism and nationalism is starting to piss me off. Why is it that every Chinese slice-of-life story has these elements? Also, the main character is rather dumb and uninteresting but he suddenly becomes a hero in the eyes of others. In a supposedly large city with cultivators, people have yet to expose him or ask about the changes.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

The original translation for this novel had been removed and replaced with a new version. This new version doesn't involve strict/direct translation of the raws. Rather, we aim to create an English Adaptation of the story; in other words, we are "retelling" the story in a style that is as close as possible to standard English novels. Our goal is to present the same story in a format that most English readers are used to.

Naturally, the plot will not be altered. However, its presentation will be altered (narrator POVs,... more>> scenes rewritten using Third-person limited POVs, etc.) Info dumps will be minimized as the translator will make an effort to insert any long explanations of the Cultivation concepts into the plot rather than simply dumping the information in the middle of a scene. Logical errors and plotholes will be fixed in a way that preserves the general direction of the plot.

If you've already read the previous version, it is highly recommended that you read the new version starting from the beginning to get the most enjoyment out of reading this novel.

Rest assured that a lot of hard work and effort has been put into giving our readers the best reading experience.

We sincerely hope you enjoy this new version.

Happy reading. <<less

TLDR in Pro vs Con form

Pros

- Early Romance

... more>> - Good use of comedy

- Plot that actually seems to be going somewhere interesting

- Modern take on cultivation that I found refreshing

- Good pacing and use of action scenes

Cons

- Some Taoism terminology was lost on me, but didn’t impende on reading

A More in Depth Look

I’ve been reading Chinese novels for over 3 years now and have read and dropped many books as something related to the writing style, plot, or something else irked me enough to realize the story wasn’t worth pursuing and I am happy to report that this isn’t one that I plan on dropping.

The story is a nice mix of classic Chinese novel writing with cultivation meshed meshed with how it all fits into the modern world. My main draw to this story was that I enjoy romance stories and was in the market for a few new pick ups and found this gem. The MC accidentally swallows a pill that the fox girl risked her life for and he starts to go through rapid changes and has this beautiful girl living with him after a life of loneliness while the fox girl sticks around in hopes of raising the MC’s cultivation to a level that she could kill him and absorb its benefits for herself after being thwarted in the first place. This changes early on in the story as she soon begins to grow feelings for him as he takes care of her in this new modern world as she was used to a very secluded lifestyle.

Her cluelessness to the intricacies of modern life that we all know today lead to many interesting moments in the story that can be used for great comedic effect and I found myself laughing out loud a few times.

Early on, we don’t get a really good idea of how strong the pill has made the MC and I like that vs normal tiers in cultivation novels as it leaves a sense of mystery as he grows stronger so it makes for some interesting fight scenes in the modern era.

The only part I did find myself truly confused is some of the Taoism stuff as xianxia is relatively a new genre to me so take that how you will. If you are like me and not as familiar with this type of stuff, it’s not a huge deal and the story still moves on as you pick up a general idea of what the author means.

Overall, it’s a story that I enjoy reading and that I try to keep up to date with as new chapters come out and one that I recommend to friends. <<less

This is a novel that I really loved after reading just 30+ chapters, but after reaching 90 chapters and a few dozen chapters before that, I just had to give up and admit that I started hating it. The main reason is the author who really can't handle writing a proper story, neither in terms of romance nor villains/events. Logic falls through everywhere and things just get so damn tiring to read, especially since the author never seems to change the story or characters up a bit. Also, the need... more>> the author seems to have to make every decent girl to fall in love with the MC and chase him despite his clear mindset of monogamy is just annoying, I do love harems but not when the story is clearly supposed to be monogamy, you have to choose, you can't have both, especially not when the MC doesn't show interest in anyone but the female lead despite the other girls dropping their panties for him. At least japanese authors tend to be "decent" enough to make the girl he ends up with a mystery when they go for a fake harem, the MC will be interested to a greater or lesser extent in every girl, but here we have a guy who clearly only loves a single person passionately yet the author seems to think it's necessary to introduce countless other women swooning for him (and countless men swoon for his woman), as if to stroke his own ego in a cheap self-insert, to make sure that we understand that they're hot and awesome, that everyone loves him and that he's just too awesome. In other words, quite pathetic.

The thing that bothers me the most is the oversweetened romance. The classic chinese author would go for info dumping and text walling for word count by telling us things that might be somewhat interesting, new information or thoughts that doesn't need to be said out loud, that's how it usually goes. But this author instead fills up the word count with redundant proclamations of eternal love and admiration. Seemingly 50% of each chapter is just the protagonist and heroine having a competition on how to kiss eachother's a*ses. It's sickeningly sweet to the point where you feel like puking instead of smiling, the s*upid kind of overdone "sweetness" where you wonder why they keep on repeating how much they love eachother like it's some kind of a catchy cult rhyme. It was fine at the start, but being told, both in their dialogues and all other text, how they're beautiful/hot and so awesome, the best in the world and how he wants to protect her and how she wants to stay with him forever... I mean, it gets old real fast. These things are something that should be said every now and then at appropriate times to deepen our grasp on their romantic relationship, it should be at special moments where it's called for, not several times every chapter. Do you think we don't understand that they love eachother? Do you actually think anyone would even like being told how much someone loves you all the time? It becomes annoying, no matter if you're the target of the affections or someone on the sideline watching.

The author also made the characters a bit overly one dimensional, they don't really have many traits at all, not feeling like real people as much as machines posing as humans. Every discussion is so simple, every event so generic and boring. The MC only has the trait of being kind and showering his girl with love, the girl only has the trait of being an airhead and innocent girl who loves the MC way too much. The side characters each has a tiny role that they never step out of, villains are evil for the sake of being evil even if it's completely illogical, sassy girls are there just to be sassy, you know, that kind of stuff. I feel quite dissatisfied with the mc's overprotectiveness and general ignorance while I also feel annoyed by the heroine's overdone "innocence" and dependence on the MC. He refuses to let her be anything but something to protect and tease, while she refuses to be anything but a lovestruck youngster to be protected because she's way too ignorant and s*upid when it comes to real life and modern society, always screwing herself over and huge committing mistakes to let the protagonist show his non-existent "masculinity" and "kindness". It's honestly a pathetic representation of some people's ideal relationship as they're too far gone to appreciate that it's simply not only impossible but also annoying when things get so overdone, simplistic and unrealistic.

Then there's also some racism going on with "foreigners" who visit. The protagonist is also an a*s who can't make it clear that he won't fulfill their wishes, instead complaining about their persistence when he's the one triggering it by promising that he might do it if they fulfill certain conditions but actually not being willing anyway. There were various things that were plain out racist while tooting china's horn. While not as malicious as most chinese authors tend to be, it was still annoying, not what I dropped this because of though. At the end of the day, the depiction of excessive romance that never changed as they felt the need to slobber all over eachother 24/7 every chapter just got more and more annoying until I started feeling more annoyed with every passing chapter. The ignorance of the MC about the cultivation world and general half-as*ed story were big contributing factors as well.

I'm quite sad about this because I wanted to love it, I felt it was quite amusing and heart warming after reading 30+ chapters but that quickly changed because of the author who simply didn't seem to have a good grasp on how to write a decent story and not overdo things for the sake of easy word count. It could've been awesome, sadly the author really blew it. I really loved the whole fox girl thing, but even that wasn't properly done, she doesn't fit the image of a fox girl in anything but her appearance, it would've been so much better if she, instead of being overly innocent to the point of s*upidity and needing to be protected while also afraid of causing trouble for the MC, was a mischievous, capable and clever fox girl with occassional lovestruck moments. But she's, at the end of the day, depicted as a mere trophy to be protected and displayed, nothing more. It makes me sad to see such a setting ruined.

I don't recommend this novel, while it was initially promising and a nice read, it quickly turned more and more stale to the point of being annoying. <<less

Novel gets extremely repetitive. It has all the usual CN garbage tropes of face slapping, arrogant random people, etc. MC continues to make s*upid decisions based on emotions whenever he gets egged on.

Very cute and funny story, and quite enjoyable with some suspension of disbelief. What you expect is exactly what you get: ordinary (not so popular) university student meets the extraordinary, and his life is changed forever. This story reminds me of VPNA: The Prequel, but it's much better. Main heroine is incredibly cute and has good chemistry with the MC, and MC doesn't seem to be dense either. There are some parts that made raise an eyebrow:

Delinquents are able to chase a student in a university holding weapons, and not get arrested? (What the heck?) Even a freaking vegetable salesman is able to attack someone with a knife, with no legal consequences. Also literally EVERY single male character introduced so far is antagonistic towards the MC

This novel is quite promising. The main character is a slightly chubby uni student who is apparently well known for confessing to campus belles and the like, which has caused him to become ridiculed. Nothing amazing so far, then we get a small glimpse of the mentioned fox-girl and other cultivation related matters. This novel has decent pacing from what I've seen, and the fact that the TL is good just helps it even more. Waiting for more.

I gave this one 5-stars because in my opinion, it rightfully deserved it.

This is the second Chinese novel that I had read and fell in love with. And the title perfectly fits the story, the characters unexpectedly have interesting quirks that successfully drawn me in. The plot was well executed though still cliche, and the romance was very well integrated into it. The moments between the MC and FMC were to die for but the FMC's social ineptitude was a little annoying at times but I guess it was meant... more>> to be since she practically relied on MC when it came to society's behaviour and etiquette. It was like their personality were made to be like that to fit each other's strengths and weaknesses, kinda like Yin and Yang relationship.

But really, I love this one because it's not harem. Although there are other girls that went after the MC, he was still amazingly loyal to the FMC and always reassures her that she's the only one and of course the FMC was like that too.

Overall, a great novel for people who could stomach the usual cliche plot and the vomit-inducing romance intertwined in it. And also I pretty much learn a whole new lot about Chinese martial arts. :) <<less

Like EVERY single overrated CN novel out there it has a good start with interesting settings and characters pretending to be an story that clearly had no intention to follow at all, the title no longer works and shouldn't be named like that.

It does start a nice story about raising an fox spirit and teaching her about human life which was fine and funny while she started to taught him about cultivation which was fine. It still followed the premise and the girl being so socially inept was great. But... more>> then it goes into a downward spiral of mediocrity becoming just a boring copy paste of your typical CN novel with girls in trouble, arranged marriage, arrogant spoiled nobles, sexy old boss lady, ret*rded echi scenes, s*upid Noble and humility spirit and the girl who is supposed to be the one of the protagonist became just an airhead that only depends from our s*upid MC and only she say praises.

You can throw this story to the tr*sh without issue, you aren't missing anything <<less

This novel really surprised me, in a nutshell the characters, world and plot build untill now are good and consistent. The strong point of this novel is obviously the interaction between the MC and his gf.

Supporting characters are really well built too, they personalities are solid and well developed. The interactions between some of them are hilarious. The only downside are some characters that are ret*rded and a**holes, but it's pretty obvious that it's the author intention.

This is a preliminary review, but I will tell my thoughts per genre at... more>> the chap I'm at:

  1. Action (4/5) : Well this is just the beggining, so although there are some fights, the MC doesn't practice any combat oriented martial arts
  2. Comedy (5/5) : Certainly one of the strong points of this novel, the translator did really a good job adapting jokes, idioms and references. As mentioned, the interactions between the characters are really funny, you will really laugh a lot.
  3. Martial Arts (3.5/5) : As said, even though the MC is already cultivating its nothing really combat oriented, but soon enough he will learn some really serious techniques, I'm just at c70.
  4. Romance (5/5) : This is other strong point of this novel, they don't take too much time to become a couple
    Spoiler

Tough they behaved like a couple in c10, it wasn't official until c50 or so.

    [collapse]
they really reminds me of the horimiya couple (Funny and heartwarming). Her little pranks and expressions are really cute!
  5. School Life (4.5/5) : Though its not the main focus, mc's classmates and uni has a strong presence in the early plot. The university forum is too much hilarious, heroine really makes lots of funny mistakes there hahaha.
  6. Xianxia (5/5) : Altough the MC isn't yet too much concerned about cultivation and immortality, his gf spares no effort for him breakthrough the cultivation phases. His gf main goal is to make him a immortal.
  7. Overall (4.5/5) : This novel is a must read, I hope the translator can make it untill the end and continue his excellent work.

It's a rather pleasant read but the whole 'let's create a harem that isn't actually a harem' that the author has decided on should annoy both sides of the fight.

While well written, and translated, this ambiguity where he wants to take it rubs me the wrong way.

Modern day setting earns it a plus since it's kind of interesting seeing Xianxia clash with modern day ideas.

Fairly cliche'd characters thus far. There's a fair bit of fun/mischieviousnesss to the writing which is why I rated it that highly, in all honesty though, there simply isn't enough plot to really have a solid idea as of yet, but based on what I've read so far, 4 stars seems appropriate due to humor+unique setting.

I won't comment on the flaws of the personalities and developments of the characters.

But this is one of the novels wherein a cultivator actually cultivates oneself. Cultivation and enlightenment. Its not one of those stories where they introduce a cultivation system and the MC levels up through those stages cause this stage is stronger and cause why not. The story properly explains the cultivation stages, what they are and why the cultivator needs this stage. I know it sounds boring for others but for me, learning the purpose of the... more>> stages on cultivation and the logic behind it was pretty nice. <<less

This novel starts off decently and becomes interesting however it quickly falls off and becomes increasingly hard to read and enjoy. The story elements become chaotic, situations don't progress naturally but are rather forced and expedited. And when situations requires seriousness, jokes are forcefully inserted that ruins the tension. Fluff and what I call side-quests have more effort put into it than the world as a whole. If you think of the iceberg theory, what you see is almost all of it with a tiny bit under the surface.

The characters... more>> in the story are inconsistent and growth is quickly tossed out the window. The main character is somehow a genius, philosophical scholar, and a chinese traditional medicine master when convenient (without training or learning) when convenient to slap faces or show 'progress' but quickly reverts back to the pre-developed persona. The biggest flaw the MC has is the 'justice' trait that the author has stuck on him. Sure, its great there's a dominant trait the MC has which the story should follow however he rarely acts on it or its such a shallow act rather than feeling unsatisfied, there's a feeling of complete disconnect. The main female lead has zero development after the initial arc of the story. I can't say there isn't any changes much later past the point to where I've read but, if there is, I'm guessing its also forced quickly. The side characters actually have growth that sticks and its a lot easier to sympathize with them than the main cast.

If you're a reader who enjoys randomly placed jokes and taking stories at face value then you might enjoy it. If you're looking for a comedic modern cultivation setting story, Cultivation Chat Group is superior in every aspect aside from the fluffy romance. <<less

At first, this novel has such a nice premise. I really like it but then I decided to drop it because of several reason.

I just hate how dependant the fox spirit aka the female lead towards MC. She's 100% doomed without MC and she kept causing trouble. I was waiting for a moment she would stand on her own but the only good quality of her was her beauty. MC just would do anything for her because of her beauty. She kept sticking to MC and did not have her... more>> own life.

I also dislike MC's s*upid decision. He kept making impulsive decision that seemed to make him look cool in front of female lead and audiences... but it does not work on me. It is just s*upid.

Spoiler

There is this incident where MC was invited to a banquet of a rich girl and he let FL to wore his shirt to the party which was ridiculed by a random man because of her outfit. MC later went out and bought a freaking expensive dress for her just to prove a point that you should not judge someone's appearance. While I agree with that sentiment, 1) You're inviting yourself criticisms if you wore inappropriate outfit to an event. This is not even at the level of wearing casual wear to a formal event which I still could deem acceptable but this is like attending someone's wedding in a freaking pyjamas. Never heard of dress code? Show some respect to the host of the party, dude.

2) MC bought the dress with a money that he did not have. Because it was such an impulsive purchase, he had to put that on credit. WHILE FULLY KNOWING that he was just a student who did not have any source of income. Not even a part-time job. He also just got kicked out from his apartment recently and was literally homeless.

[collapse]

This novel is not tagged with harem but I believe it needed one. Although MC kept repeating that he only loves FL, he also had several ambiguous relationships with other females. I am not counting those who was obviously female friends. I am talking about the more than friend but less than lovers relationship. MC's monologue had also several times saying that he was indeed attracted to these females. Just nope to me.

I read this novel only around 100s before dropping. I heard it got better in 300s but I cannot bear reading another 200s chapters. If you can bear it then feel free to read this. <<less

The novel isn't bad but I quickly lost interest. It's funny and all but there's a lot of cliche of like arrogant dickheads, a lot of brawls over brain scenario, and the typical tsundere female harems who eventually falls for him because of his "manliness" improving through cultivation.

I guess this was more so on me, as I was expecting the MC to be a bit smarter and learn about the cultivation world from his fox spirit waifu as he tries to hide/adapt it to everyday life but was disappointed.

Still a... more>> decent read for those who enjoy the more mindless and troupe xianxia and wuxia novels. This is right up that alley, the only difference is it takes place in a modern setting. <<less
