I cried a bowl of tears and finished this in 2 days and when I woke up my eyebags and eyelids doubled in size

And yes I was the one who added the tragedy tag (because I'm very sensitive to tragedies and I tend to avoid them) but I was tricked this time but I couldn't stop because the story was just that good.

The first half of the novel is quite lighthearted and funny because It's the world seen through the main character's eyes. She's thick as cow-hide and that's... more>> just her natural disposition.

I can't count how many times I bursted out laughing. The s*xual innuendos and jokes were top class.

(Should I add R15 to the tags?)
Spoiler

s*x is also mentioned in the story but the way it's written from JinMi's perspective makes it sound seriously innocent and child-like. But don't get me wrong, the story still had depth and seriousness to it.

[collapse]

Once the story descended into its latter half... this is where it gets unbearably dramatic. This is also the culprit of my puffy tear-stained cheeks. If I was the MC I would have killed myself over and over (7 lives or something for gods) and many others.

BUT I couldn't stop and the thing is once you start the sad part you wouldn't be able to stop too. So read it only when you have time to wallow in your pond of tears.

If I could rewrite the story

Spoiler

I would never let the mother give Jin Mi the unfeeling pill. That was her undoing. And that was what ruined the lives of others as well.

[collapse]

And the ending was sort of disappointing. Well at least for me.
It was a good wrap up...
the writing was sublime
the translator had near-perfect grammar and thoroughly transmitted the Chinese expressions and the feelings and quirks of each character...

But you know
If I experience this amount of tragedy there also needs to be just as much joy to reward all that pain. The ending (epilogue) was confusing as well. The author didn't elaborate enough about Jin Mi.

But that was an amazing story so if you want to go through an emotional roller coaster ride feel free to take the ride I just finished. <<less

The MC is a naive and dense girl who has no awareness of love or s*x, causing a series of misunderstandings between her, the proud and petty male lead and other characters. Although it was initially amusing, they carried and repeated the same joke throughout, creating a greater mess for the characters, and serving as the main plot of the story (by then it really isn’t funny anymore). Various plots and schemes occur in the background, but following the clueless MC, we miss out on these until the very end,... more>> where she suddenly understood everything. Character development was also slow but suddenly escalated near the end. The romance was weak – to begin with, a love story where one of the characters can’t feel love for most of the story is flawed – with the interactions mostly being one-sided on the part of the male lead and other love interests. The story would’ve been a lot more fascinating if we had a slightly more aware MC or more understanding male lead to guide us through. Or if the MC could gradually mature/regain her emotions earlier. However the greatest issue is that the story failed to wholeheartedly embrace a specific genre – romance, comedy, drama, angst, political intrigue etc – and also failed to navigate between them. Leaving it stuck in the unimpressive middle ground with weak humour, a flimsy plot and dull characters acting out a shallow romance.

Comparisons - In terms of simple heroines that are easily led astray, you can try Jiang Hu’s Road is Curved. Though the female lead is cute in her naivety, she has actual emotions and slowly matures as a person, making her extremely likeable and believable. Also the story was actually funny when it needed to be, and showcased a depth this story can only dream of. <<less

All I can say is... if you are a fan of angst, misunderstanding, rom-com that can make you feel from heaven then to hell, really s*upid characters that you wanna hate but love because of their imperfections and cause of actions then go ahead and read.

BUT BEWARE. ALL YOU READERS WHO ARE PLANNING TO READ THIS. BRING SOME OBJECTS TO BREAK AND SOME KLEENEX WHEN YOU GET IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BOOK. CUZ I ASSURE YOU THAT YOU WILL NEED IT. :)

Spoiler

At first I wasn't really planning to read this because I didn't even know it existed but when I saw a recommendation from a novel I was about to read, I decided to read this first. When I read the few chapters I thought that this was a gem that others haven't read yet because of the comedy that the author first gives you that makes you feel like your in heaven but when you get in the middle of the novel, well damn, you better prepare some stuff to break from all the misunderstandings, the death of some characters, the mysteries of Jin Mi's birth and how she acts.

Spoiler

Now let's talk about Jin Mi. The FL of this book that the wonderful author wrote. This child when she was born she was destined to have some love problems because of that Unfeeling Pill. You can say that the source of all this problem is the le pill that no one has ever heard about except Jin Mi's mom. You would be hating the female lead from her every actions of being too s*upid by using the 2 love interest as rags throughout the story since it doesn't seem that she is interested in any of them. But you cannot really blame her like translator sama said. She may have deserved all that hate and pain because of how she played with them but all the fault lies in the pill that unable her to feel any love towards anyone. When she finally realize what she had lost, oh my, all I can say while reading it was YOU DESERVE EVERY LITTLE BIT OF IT YOU B*TCH! But thinking about it, when you look at her character deeply you will realize she is imperfect along with the pill. To describe her would be that she is a stubborn straightforward girl with a pure mind who thinks in a straight line. Her imperfections made her who she is. She learned the hard lesson after realizing her origin, falling in love, and choosing for herself and not running away. So all in all I very much admired her.

[collapse]

But you know who I LOVE the most in this novel? Its REN YU/NIGHT ♥♥♥♥ He to me is the most perfect dude who resembles everyone in society today that touched my heart. His childhood to the very end of the story stole my heart that the only reason I managed to finish this book was my love for him. His loneliness, his deep love, his mask that hides his ugliest nature captured me that he became my fav character in the book. When Jing Mi said about how he lied so much that he mistook that lie as truth to live made me think of how we all wanted to live in our utopia if we only had power. But when we finally had it, all of the emotion we will feel is loneliness. The second dude that got my heart aint the ML but Master Puchi who saw Jin Mi for who she truly is and never pushed himself on her. He helped when she was down and stayed true to himself and was Jin Mi's silent guardian angel.

[collapse]

Ai... I love all the characters in this book not because of their astonishing looks but because of how imperfect they ara that makes them perfect. This book truy lets you learn the moral of "Do not take things for granted" and "Too late for regrets" etc. I just wanna say thanks to the wonderful translators for doing such a great job of ttanslating this novel. Now lemme go sleep since my eyes are stinging from trying not to cry (I managed to not cry a river of tears whopie!) So imma be off to bed to dream about Ren Yu *blushes* <<less

Heavenly Second Prince, who is a reborn Phoenix. He brings her to heaven, and she is his servant Book Boy for a century. At some point, the Heavenly First Prince, a Dragon, also falls for her. There are all sorts of hilarious hijinks. Jin Mi's secret identity, the plots of other immortals, and how she gets her revenge and loves and loses and finds her love again, are all written. The story spans thousands of years and travels from the Heavens to the mortal realm to the Demon realm.

[collapse]

There are 24 chapters and 4 epilogues. The english fan translation only summarizes the first 8 chapters, when Jin Mi first meets the princes. I wish someone could translate the first 8 chapters in detail.

Initially, Jin Mi's clueless character is very entertaining and funny. However, once the drama and angst take over, I want to shake some common sense into her. However, she is basically a very innocent and clueless fruit spirit, no matter how high she climbs. The book is written in the first person, so the plot reminds me of Three Lives Three Worlds Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms (especially with the time skips), but the clueless personality reminds me a lot of the zany heroine in Refusing to Serve Me?.

All in all, I'd recommend this book for the engaging and imaginative plot and the

I watched drama first before reading this novel. I was crying when I watched the drama, now I cried again. What a masochist I am. I know how it will end, but I just can't help but curious and read it all night. Actually, the drama helped me a lot when I read this book cause my imagination more vivid, and the book helped me understanding some characters more. Even though, I was surprised that ML has such fiery personality than in the drama (he seemed more soft and patient... more>> enough with MC).

Spoiler

oot, I'm really glad that Deng Lun got the role as XF cause he's the reason why I hookep up all night watch the drama. He looks sooooooooooo cool!!!! I love watching his wide smile, looking at his eyes. It's been so long I like an actor/idol like this. I'm fangirling him now.

[collapse]

The novel really has a charm with its comedy and angsty plots. It revolves around love triangle and with some plot twist, I don't know who is more pitiful or who has more justice between the three important characters. I feel like they have their own flaws and reasons why they did it which I can't pinpoint who has the greater fault in this. Which makes it perfect to make an angsty scenes. I'm trully glad that there's some epilogues, because the ending left unsatisfied (the same with the drama, cause I had some questions that was answered in epilogues). The development is exist, either character development or relationship development. Remember that the MC was fed with Unfeeling Pill.

This novel is like water and fire. The first half of this novel you will laugh, towards the end you will cry. The polar opposite. Though yhe writting style seems abrupt at some points. It's jumping around to other scene without notices. Nevertheless it still a great story. <<less

This novel turned Shitty near the end.

The Male Lead turning into a womanizer and just kept on purposely hurting the MC was downright disgusting. If you like a womanizing ML though, then this novel is for you.

They are both in the wrong. But heck, the ML (Phoenix) really destroyed the author's original image of him. Even waiting for '6 thousand years' is too light for the ML.

I liked the beginning, but the Shitty End destroyed the entirety of the novel.

I finished reading this in one day and my immediate reaction at the end was: “Wow”. The obtuse sounding title made me reluctant to plunge in at first but I thoroughly enjoyed the writing style. Written in the first person, it is a story set in the realms of gods and demons, something like the Chinese epic “Canonization of the Deities”. You will be reading a story of romance and betrayal, where gods and demons alike act like humans and even the noblest of beings cannot escape the same temptations... more>> that ensnare mortals: infatuation, love, jealousy, lust, anger, wrath.

The MC might not be to everyone’s cup of tea. Told from her perspective, you will be reading about how this absolutely naive and innocent spirit manages to entangle the two most eligible princely men of the godly realm without meaning to. She does not understand that her guileless actions and words can throw the feelings of those princes and the surrounding heavenly court into chaos.

Each character major or minor is important and their dialogue are distinct. The prose is excellent and the translators did their best to transfer the word play and humor across.

The first eleven chapters unfolds in a merry sort of way, we get to read about the hijinks arising from her misunderstandings (eg: “mutual cultivation”) and some of the humor did elicit a smile or two on my face. The reader can either take delight in the confusion and humor sown; or be utterly exasperated by her lack of knowledge.

The later half is where everything slowly unravels as secrets and desires began to spill. Readers of “To Be a Virtuous Wife” might find similarities here, where the MC finds herself caught up in a plot that threatens to upset the status quo. Unlike the abrupt nature of the crisis in “To Be A Virtuous Wife”, the political troubles here are much more disruptive. The plot twists are satisfying in that you understand why they happen. We get to read how the MC slowly understands the meaning of love and a love lost, and much drama is told as all parties concerned go through the motions of realization, denial, acceptance, grief and desperation. Don’t worry, the story has a happy ending that fit the immortal characters. And indeed, it is a story worth reading.

On a sidenote, the first 7 chapters aren’t hosted at One Second Spring’s site, the ones there are summaries without dialogue. The full translations of the first 7 chapters can be found on a tumblr blog in the comments section of the summaries. <<less

CW: r*pe, manipulation, toxic relationships

This is an absolutely terrible novel, don't read it. The Phoenix God of Fire r*pes Jin Mi and tries to mu*der her multiple times out of jealousy, there's nothing romantic about that. These other reviewers giving 5 stars and saying it's a really romantic story, are brain dead and sick in the head. R*pe and abuse are the OPPOSITE of romantic.

Spoiler

Fire's father r*ped Jin Mi's mother, and then his mom mu*dered her mom out of jealousy. That's why Jin Mi's mom wanted to hide her, to protect her from Fire's evil abusive family. And Fire is exactly the same as his parents. He fights his mom to stop her from mu*dering Jin Mi, but literally the day before he had tried to mu*der her himself by drowning her in a pond and then raping her while she was barely conscious after the drowning.

[collapse]

Also, literally all of the men in the story take advantage of Jin Mi because she has no emotions and doesn't understand love or s*x. Her lack of emotions has not made any useful impact on the story by chapter 18, it is only ever used to make her vulnerable to manipulation and abuse. The author probably just wanted to make a cute innocent protagonist to torture. <<less

Well written and beautifully poetic at times-- and much of that is owed to an incredibly gifted and thoughtful translator. However it was let down, particularly towards the angsty middle, by abrupt pacing and strangely executed and underdeveloped 'plot twists' that seemed, well, unearned (perhaps lost in translation). Also, the treatment of s*x and love was a little dubious at time- the protagonist is completely naive and misguided about such concepts... and nobody thought to correct this??

Overall I think the novel presents some very poignant ideas, and the development of... more>> their relationship is really quite gripping and addictive. However I believe some of the nuances when it comes to foreshadowing perhaps the huge twists were lost or not as developed in translation, so some of the developments just felt rather messy and uncalled for. The story certainly plays with yours feels, and in the beginning your sympathies fluctuate wildly (often not towards the actual protagonist) and sometimes I enjoyed that and sometimes it was simply annoying and manipulative for no reason. Overall I enjoyed the ending most just because it was simplistic, fluffy angst and everything actually made sense for once. And the epilogues are supremely cute.

P.S. The translator for this series is wonderful, and her commentary at the end of each chapter is honestly something I look forward to as much as the chapter itself. It's very thoughtful and intelligent and provides a lot of nuanced insights into the original text and certain underlying meaning. <<less

just passing by and drop a review. I've read this long ago and I still hate the feeling I get from all the angst and misunderstandings between the main couple. It's frustrating, by the time I reach in the middle of the story I got bored and skip all the way to the end. Actually for a new reader you don't need to mind my review, maybe you'll like the novel. It's just me being petty for all the bitter feeling I get back then ?

Go on and read. ??

I love this very much. The romance, angst and humor blended nicely into a good book. I only give 4 star cause sometimes I want to hit main character so badly because her denseness is rival to none (although it is not only her fault she turn out like that).

The translator also translate this novel beautifully and I really enjoy her comment.

Oh geez, how do I start...

1. This novel is one of those novels that bring you on a roller coaster ride between comedy, frustration and awe of the misunderstandings, and the tear-jerking moments. What really kind of drew me in in the beginning was the MC's adorable and hilarious innocent mind. She doesn't really know much about the difference between female and male since no one really taught her anything about that. After the comedy and the awesome moments where the male lead gets jelly, you just suddenly get attacked... more>> with misunderstandings, tears, and killinggg! So just like mentally prepare yourself...

2. I'm not sure if this is counted as a spoiler or not but oh whale!

Spoiler

Be careful for which male lead you ship with the MC, your mind will be blown. Like you'd start supporting one guy, but then something happens so then you move onto the other male candidate, but no! There's another misunderstanding making it hard to choose which one you like more!!

3. Overall, I really enjoyed this novel, like I stayed up until 2 am because I didn't want to put it down. It just kinda draws you in and makes you itch to read more of it I guess? >:O <<less

Storyline is okay, but plot and character development is purely lacking. I don't get immersed in the scenes depicted in the novel, and had a very hard time understanding each character's personality. There's no convincing relationship between Phoenix and Jin Mi and I could not understand how they ended up falling in love with each other. That also made their s*x scenes awkward. The author failed to connect the dots and I feel left out as the story progresses. I have a habit of reading the novel first before watching... more>> the tv adaptation and honestly I prefer the TV series more than the book. The love story is much more convincing in the tv series than the novel because they actually pinpointed the moment they started to fall in love which was when JM and Phoenix went to the mortal world. It's weird because usually I would feel something lacking in the TV series because they don't explain things behind the scenes (like how characters felt, or the backstory of some of scenes), but with this novel, I feel connected and had my fulfillment with the adaptation more than the novel itself. This is soooo off. I'd say this could be a great story if the write-up is composed in a better way. Or maybe it's the translation that's lacking? I don't know because I don't read chinese. The novel just felt off and doesn't leave a great impression on me. <<less

I quite like the storyline. It has a bit of everything. It is different from all the books I read this far. It is a fairy tale.

The MC is a very naive fairy. She does not have an ounce of hate in her heart. She is just a pure, sweet and trusty soul. She fell in love with one of the sons of a heavenly god.
