It was Yan Zhaoge’s first time transmigrated into another world. He landed in a martial warrior civilization that was at the peak of prosperity. He ended up in the Divine Palace’s library, which collected and preserved the classics of the entire world from all fields of knowledge. However, a world-class calamity struck soon after, and even the Divine Palace was destroyed.

Yan Zhaoge’s soul once again transmigrated into another world. The twist was he arrived in the same world, except countless years have passed.

With his brain full of rare books and classics from the era of peak prosperity, Yan Zhaoge’s second transmigration to the present era was like a gamer who was used to playing hell mode suddenly finding himself playing the game on easy mode.

That was just way too awesome.

But before that, he would need to fix a problem.

“I’m not the main character? In fact, I’m actually the main character’s love rival and the antagonistic Mr. Perfect senior brother? This script is wrong!”

The novel had a really good premise and had a unique idea of criticizing the usual Chinese wuxia/xianxia/xuanhuan tropes, seriously one of the best reads I had picked up in a while. But as time went on and our beloved MC had finally found his own identity instead of just being a stepping stone for other "heaven-chosen mc's" story then shifts into a typical chinese xuanhuan novel really sad about this.

Things to consider about the novel:

  • MC is a reincarnator, and possess knowledge that only he knows.
  • Some really good and likeable side-characters suddenly dying whether good or bad I really cant tell.
  • So far MC has gotten everything to work for him, he has not a single time experienced any issues or difficulties that really he hasn't experienced any setbacks (I guess thats typical for chinese novels though?)
  • MC has really great attachments to the current body he reincarnated in, dude has really put a lot of effort into helping his sect improve and survive the "numerous" dangers out there. (Not so obvious but it is hinted how much danger his sect is facing after he learns a bit of clues from the enemies he kills and other hints as well.

Great story, humorous, cunning and calculative character.
Personally I like the story development where characters in it has their own glow/flare instead of just an extra, tis almost as good as World of cultivation (in side character development aspect). As for the main character himself is awesome in the way he uses his all encompassing knowledge in almost every field, and still practice like madman
(Just like emperor Li Qiye (ED)). Overall its a must read for xianxia lovers.

I like it, but it's nothing stellar.

All the typical trope and background character ass whooping you find in other CN novels you'll find here. World building is shite. Side characters are next to non existent other than Ah-Hu. Story has no clear and definite direction.

Yan Zhaoge is just an over all better MC than other XianXia novels. I like him so much that I WISH he was the MC for all other novels like Tales of Demons and Gods, and Against the Gods, Desolate Era, etc.

Also, as what other people... more>> have said, the story changes from being a parody to it's own unoriginal XianXia. You can enjoy the first hundred or so chapters quite well, and if you like Yan Zhaoge enough, you can stay for the ride. <<less

One of the best novels I've read.

The MC is OP, but you can still sense some danger and tension. He's solved lots of issues, but there's always someone more powerful. He's had some narrow scrapes, but hasn't actually personally suffered losses.

The characters are well written and engaging. The girls aren't annoying, and the side characters aren't just flunkies waiting for goodies from the MC.

Spoiler

His steed is a (temporarily glowing blue) panda.

Spoiler

The MC isn't the only character that got transported. It's different though.

[collapse]

The plot is interesting and isn't easy to predict. The MC's side doesn't always win for free. The antagonists are beaten, but they still linger and are dangerous. <<less

Plot is interesting. The speed which things happen is quicker than other xianxia. There are a lot of characters. So far there is not a lot of redundancy which is a very good thing. I would say this a much better written than many pieces in which the authors don't seem to have any common sense and emotional intelligent.

I still can't understand how memories can move bodies and still retain the previous owner's memories. You only have one brain. But this is still an interesting read. I just hope the... more>> author doesn't make the main character so invincible that he is able see through everyone's plans. <<less

I felt like the story was written unnecessarily longer than what it's supposed to be. The author focus on unimportant things quite a lot, while it makes the world more detailed, it also makes it such a chore for readers to read.

The story is just your average Transmigration story, only sprinkled with bunch of 'Protagonists' tropes serving as enemy for our MC. Our MC isn't evil either, just a guy who mind his own thing while acting cool. Translation isn't bad, but it comes out pretentious to me. Words than... more>> can be shorter becomes wordy, I tried looking at the raw and it's obvious that this translation is more verbose than it supposed to be. I like narrations that go straight to the point, so this isn't really for me. <<less

I stopped reading after about 70%. It was enjoyable up to that point, and I would probably enjoy the rest, but less so, and considering the time it takes to read (it's almost 3 million words in English translation), I decided to switch somewhere else.

Overall, I enjoyed the MC, the world, and the plot pacing. He runs into opponents that persist for a number of chapters and subplots, being threats to the MC and his friends/family/sect. But, then he or his friends finally achieve a decisive victory and get rid... more>> of the adversary for good -- so no "cockroach" enemies. His interactions with friends and allies are okay -- he helps his allies, but doesn't babysit them. He has others help him, but same thing -- no "grandpa in a ring" to help. He is a little too good at pulling rabbits out of a hat in a confrontation, but it's not a bad quality in an intelligent MC (although I wish we could see a bit more of the prep).

What was a bit tedious: too many mentions of Journey to the West, and Investiture of the Gods. I don't mind using the elements of those as foundation of world-building, but not the MC constantly reflecting of how his current universe is like, or unlike, the plots of those novels. Along with that, a bit too much about Daoist lineages -- they matter, but there is just a bit too much on that.

The main thing that caused me to stop reading was the overall change from MC acting mostly on his own, discovering dangers and opportunities, to an increasing focus on playing a role in a universe-wide political game that's being going on for millenia, with plots, subplots, conspiracies, betrayals.

P.S. Ignore the synopsis. Early on, the MC encounters a few trope-like MC candidates. They are treated reasonably well, with a combination of seriousness and humor, but most of the book has nothing at all to do with that premise. The MC happens to be reborn as a moderately talented "young master", but he does the best he can with it -- neither ignoring the advantages he can get, nor getting an exaggerated sense of his importance in a universe with far, far more powerful forces than his family. <<less

After reading History's Number 1 Founder, I decided to read this novel before writing a review. So I'll be writing this as both a review and comparison of the two works of the same author (with more emphasis on HSSB).

I could only describe this novel is something similar to when you're trying to scratch an itchy part of your body but no matter how you scratch; you can't reach the itchy spot underneath and you don't get the relief or satisfaction you're looking for. This basically sums up the whole... more>> novel from my point of view.

The plot itself if actually quite interesting with quite a bit of hidden backstory and plot twists that explains the questions and plot holes that the story encounters in the earlier parts. It might not be mind blowing level of world building however it is much better than the Author's earlier work (History's Number 1 Founder) which has a much more linear plot with not a lot of impactful plot devices that affect the main character.

The main thing that differentiates the two though is the writing. In my opinion the HNOF is better written than HSSB, Although many would argue that both stories has an extremely fast pacing (which actually is true), I think HNOF does not suffer much from this problem compared to HSSB. In HNOF, the pace of the story is fast however I always felt like the author did not sacrifice a lot of details with how fast the story was going, in this regard you could almost feel like the pace is not as rushed solely due to the attention to details the author gives on the earlier parts of HNOF (Yes like most reviews says, this does not apply to like the remaining 1/4 of the novel). HSSB on the other hand encounters the main problem pretty early, aside from the build up that happens at the beginning, the rest of the novel is like a roller coaster ride which doesn't stop plunging down until the very end, the longer it goes the faster the story progresses. As you can probably guess it suffers a lot of the problems that fast paced stories suffer: lack of character development, mediocre world building, skipping out scenarios that would actually put meaning to the whole plot, a good buildup for every arc to set the mood and make each arc more exciting and many more; instead it sometimes focuses on unnecessary details that does not impact the story or in most cases the author tries to fix the abovementioned but is too superficial that it does nothing to contribute to the story whatsoever (hence the scratch analogy I mentioned in the beginning). The only upside though is that due to the quick pacing of the story, it keeps you hooked and wanting for more with the quick resolution of the arcs and surprisingly it keeps you (or me) invested enough to the point where it'd be a shame to drop the novel.

The similarity that most people would probably agree with though is that both stories' final climax happen and end blazingly fast to the point where it can be unsatisfying. The whole story builds up for the final battle only for it to happen and end in a at most 5 chapters. You can't even pause and appreciate how far the main character comes because it ends just like nothing happened. In this regard though, HNOF is much better than HSSB since it actually narrates the resolution and the aftermath of the final battle along with the lives of the characters and the whole world after the ordeal. HSSB on the other hand, in HSSB fashion; 'ties up the loose ends' in literally just 1 chapter, although some people (including me sometimes) like an open ending, this one however left a bitter taste in my mouth.

Overall, I have a love hate relationship with this novel, although most of the things I wrote in my review are negative points; I spent a lot of time binge reading this work and a most of those times are actually pretty pleasant and enjoyable aside from the parts where I really felt like the author could have done something to improve his work.

This novel is pretty enjoyable for what it's worth. So after reading my review and you still decide to read this novel then you would probably enjoy it as much as I did or maybe even more since you've cast aside your expectations and heeded my warnings. <<less

Started off great and interesting but started to get boring with the fights having the same formulas and lasting up to 40 chapters. Ending got boring as well just name dropping a bunch of different gods and having them fight against each other you could literally skip the last 200 chapters and it wouldn't make a difference whatsoever.

The start is fine. Its the new typical MC is the villain of a wuxia world. After a while though, MC just comes off as a typical OP MC in a wuxia world. Its not even the typical plot involving setbacks, we got no setbacks at all, just a smooth sailing journey. Then we even have a long time missing family member quest. Its just boring.

This novel has plenty of ingredients that could lead to a good novel. An interesting setting, some intriguing plot devices, a main love interest who isn't your typical xianxia/xuanhuan fair. I'm not going to leave you in suspense, it squanders all of them for an incredibly generic xianxia plot full of face slapping, crippling, and genocide. It genuinely has some pretty interesting characters! Unfortunately, they are used in the most boring way possible. The main character could've been interesting, instead he quickly becomes a perfect gary stu and honestly a... more>> bit annoying. If anything this novel proves that main characters and young masters are actually the same thing, one just has fate on his side. I think I'm angrier at this novel because even though its honestly better than some of the really bad popular xianxia/xuanhuan, this makes me feel worse because it got my hopes up. <<less

I think this novel is a pretty solid reading. Not remarkable but pretty fun nevertheless. There's not much humor after starting chapters but we've got what was promised. The strong MC who is just a senior brother at that, never the eldest one, but being a clever and active boi. This all in a usual chinese novel's setting.

Unfortunately there are still several more things to lament about. First, it's a tragic fate of the MC and his father. They are really cursed by the author with their wives. The author... more>> uses them only to make MC's life harder and give him some problems to solve. Other thing is the way the author makes more enemies for the MC, apart from those his women are making already in a plethora. In the beginning it was 'You spoilt my good time and now I'm your enemy for life and will destroy all your nation'. Classic chinese trope but exaggerated even more. Then it became simply 'I'm a madman, so bite me while I'm burning your world down'.

And last but nor least.

neither panicked nor flustered

simple but honest smile

Those stamps will hound you in almost every chapter. Alas. <<less

I give this novel ☆☆ (2 stars/5)

There is definitely something about this novel I really don’t like.

So far I am at chapter 45 and I am extremely bored from the plot. I went into this series thinking I may like it and I’m definitely not enjoying it so far.

... more>> From the first couple chapters, it was interesting, to an extent-transmigrating into cannon fodder villain ect ect, but the flow of the story itself is uninteresting.

The translation is fine, the writing is easy to understand, but the plot itself is lackluster. There is nothing so far that’s made me really want to continue on reading this.

The fight scenes that have occurred were boring. If it doesn’t trigger my imagination, it’s a clear sign of not showing and just telling. There is nothing more mundane than that.

For the meantime, I am dropping this novel but may pick it up in the future. <<less

The premise was interesting, but the writing is too bad. Very slow, little amount of events, cliche plot, chapters and chapters wasted describing things that have no value (sometimes you just skip 5 chapters in a row and you lose nothing, just continue reading without missing any information that influences the flow of events).

This story started out good, unique and entertaining but at some point, I'm not particularly sure where, it lost its flare. Reaching to chapter 600+ is an achievement especially with the repetitive arc of saving someone, not being trusted, ambush, killing everyone, offending bigwigs, killing bigwigs, finding treasures in the midst of all that and then doing it all over again just with a different bigwig and a different treasure.

I will probably finish this once the translation is done (good job btw and many thanks) but for now me and... more>> Zhaoge are taking a break.",) <<less

Everyones criticizing how the author derailed from the original premise of him vs the various cliche MC templates e.g MC that has a second chance to relive his life/ country bumpkin that has a fortuitous encounter/ Old Expert thats reborn into a useless noble etc. But you forget that those MC cliche templates are already the most popular and common, like, how long do you expect the story to keep continuing like that, he already did a ridiculously good job integrating those MC cliches seamlessly into the story without making... more>> it too parody like and making the readers unable to take things seriously, , it was the correct decision to use that momentum and continue trying to make the story abit more serious and diverge from the original premise because the ideas going down that road are bound to run dry. Wether or not he actually did a good job steering away from all that a establishing a more serious and traditional wuxia style, that remains to be seen.

TBH my only big complaint about this novel is actually shocking for once, I felt that this stroy would have actually been more entertaining for me with a harem tag, like sya what you want but it just felt empty and seems like a waste because the MC is this personification of perfection, martial genius, handsome looks, monstrous background, big wig father etc. he goes around acheiving all the magnificent feats but I feel like it was a bit bland without much romanic interaction until like 600 chapters in, and even then, it wasnt handled properly, like, its almost as if they both just woke up one day and were like, wow what are these feeling, oh, I see, I love him/her, well... cool, moving on. Like that was literally it. We get such a badass heavens chosen male MC but I still wanted to see the arrogant mistress getting roflstomped by MC, or the cold and aloof, detached from worldly matters senior sister getting soft for the MC after he shows his prowess or SOMETHING, I jus feel like he was doing all that work all over the 3 worlds without any "reward" you feel me. <<less

The title and the way this starts out is misleading. You think its just going to be a straight parody with our main character constantly getting stuck in hi-jinks having to deal with egotistical other main characters.

It is more along the lines of a typical MC who just happens to also be reincarnated from the real world and having read all these stories before like many of us he can spot the other Main Character type characters. He is the super MC not only having his own cheat like everyone... more>> else, but also being extremely genre savvy so he spots and stomps all over the other MCs.

I enjoy it because I enjoy these types of stories, with the extra bit of encountering other MCs being a nice addition. <<less

No Spoiler Review. Completed review.

.

It's a good read. Yan Zhaoge (MC) is a transmigrator born in a Cultivation World, without any cheat but with a Super Comprehension of everything Martial Arts Cultivation related. He is smart, handsome, intelligent, talented and every other positive quality. Nearly all of his fights are curbstomps. If he is fighting someone of similar cultivation level, then he wins by default. And even when fighting against higher Cultivation Cultivators, he can win or retreat safely, In those dangerous fights he doesn't get injured and is always... more>> calm and collected. Plot Armor is thicker than Thousand Million miles wall. If you are fine with reading a "Perfect" MC, you can give this a try.

About the World,
A very expansive world not just in size of the Cultivation world but also the places we experience throughout the novel. The author is very good at describing a location, making them feel amazing. Also, MC travels a lot, he is not the type of guy to cultivate in a cave peacefully. Although those moments are there, they are very rare. Most of the time he travels to a place and does MC things (beat up people, get treasures) , then he goes to the next location.

About the plot,
The first half of the mortal world arc is about 3 Main Character templates villians, and I was thinking the whole novel will be about defeating different main characters but the focus of the story changed later. Which was a bit disappointing at first, but later I began to like the new story much more.

The plot is straightforward. The cultivation world has been destroyed in a calamity and Cultivation has now started again from scratch. As the MC grows stronger he found out more and more about the reason why the world was destroyed, who destroyed it. And how it is connected to him. Near the end, the author explains everything clearly even how the MC transmigrated.

About the ending,
Not a bad ending for once. MC has reached the peak, there is a higher level but he can wait for that one. All the plot threads has been resolved. But, this could totally have several epilogue chapters. The story ended after a war, we know that it will be happily ever after, especially when MC is the strongest now, but I would have liked to read more about some of my fav characters.

Characters,
Lots of interesting characters. MC's dad is one example, he is basically a main character of his own series. Then their is MC's wife (No Harem btw), who is also a strong female MC type. And many many more.

Cultivation and techniques,
Very unique. In it's description and usage compared to other novels.

Any technique is not just 1 technique but a whole new school of thought. You can learn a palm technique, and use it to cultivate your body, shoot a laser out of your finger or maybe somehow even use that to teleport, well not that exaggerated but techniques have lots of potential compared to any other novel I have read. Anyway, this means MC learns a sword art which uses Time as basis, once mastered to a high level, he now basically has Time Manipulation. He can reverse time, forward it, create a time loop in a small area and much more.

Cultivation level are even more amazing, a Cultivation level upgrade will grant you some new abilities, which becomes the reason why the lower level cultivator can't defeat the higher level cultivator. For ex, at mortal ranks, one breakthrough unlocks flight which is a very big advantage over everyone who cannot fly. And at Immortal Level, one upgrade basically make it so that a lower level Cultivator cannot injure you, even if the lower level cultivator is stronger and can basically push the higher one around easily, he cannot injure him because his energy will automatically disintegrate when encountering the higher Cultivator's energy. This makes fights very interesting.

Good things,
One of the good thing about this novel is that there is no s*upidity. Characters are scarily smart, if MC wasn't literally perfection incarnate there was no way he would have survived such smart and rational enemies. Almost every character is scarily competent and very rational. Someone can be your mortal enemy one moment but closeally the next based on whatever is most beneficial to them. This was what, which kept me going through reading this novel, the fights are interesting but the mental battles were lot more fun to read. Also, no harem but there is some romance with the wife.

Bad things,
This novels is one of the most lengthy novel I have read. By that I don't mean wordcount. But lots of infodumps about ANYTHING history of some long dead character, or about an event that happened long ago, there are times when conversations between two people has lasted for several chapters and these chapters are not short either. It was tough reading this one, although I like the novel but reading infodumps instead of something that advances the story, made by stop reading this from time to time. I like infodumps, but in this novel it felt like too much.

Overall,
Good novel, good story. Smart MC. Smart characters. Lots of infodump. Read it if you can endure the infodumps. Then it will be one of the best xianxia novel you can read online. <<less

The novel starts out great and gets boring as hell after he leaves the mortal world. All of his enemies after ascending have cultivation level way higher than his and he somehow always has a cheat that helps him fight them it gets pretty annoying since u wont see him get into a proper fight. He basically cheeses his way to the top. The Sun wukong power is great but it feels way too convenient that he has it. It wouldve been better if there was a time skip and... more>> a long training montage that puts him the same level as his opponents instead of him just replying on some broken stuffs he gets.

The mortal world arcs are really great that I plan to reread it again but this time Ill pretend that it ends after ascension cause gaddamn does it get shitty after that. <<less
