Dropping this for a third time out of frustration and writing this review as a reminder to myself to not try and pick it up again no matter how enticing Hamster's translation looks like. The realism of the setting is refreshing but it cannot cover up the repetition, frustration and boredom brought about by the FL's indecision, self-sabotage and lack of character growth (it's like she learnt nothing at all from her previous life and is just a ditzy 12 year old being exposed to the world - her last... more>> life's experience and her vows (that she breaks after 2 hours) do not count for anything other than some instances of precognition that do spice the story a bit). Do not be like me and ignore the low rated reviews if you want to see characters that grow in spite of their flaws. There is 0 character growth and as much grace as I was giving FL for being 15 could not just sustain how indecisive and vacillating she was. Her and Qilang's love story is too frustrating and what finally got me is the fact that she says she learnt from her last life and can't keep going in the same circles but she willingly tosses herself in the mud.
Spoiler

he is the ML, I peeped forward and I think they get together before they get married and she gets bullied worse than when she was with RM - this is what I sufficed from just glancing through the final chapters. He is a horrible ML

[collapse]
Unlike other readers, I quite enjoyed the reality of living in a patriarchal "Confucian" society where women did not have many choices and had to depend on the evaluations and thoughts of men to survive, and the fact that she was not so OP and a whole lot flawed. It was realistic and that's what has been making me want to at least try and finish this book once. But let's not misplace mediocrity & indecision for realism. The FL has no learning bones or brains, she does not adapt at all or learn from mistakes or grow in any manner. Instead she keeps oscillating within a self-constructed cage and keeps feeling guilty for wrongs she has not done against a man who is indecisive and oblivious to his power. At some points, even RM sounded like a saner and maybe even better choice in this life. Despite living two lives and apparently learning lots, she still acts like a self-involved undergrown teenager who has never left her boudoir or experienced suffering. Her small points of smartness and all that made her endearing in the first 70 chapters becomes grating, repetitive, and oh so frustrating by chapter 90. Also I get the sky/cloud and mud metaphor but can we stop repeating it every 3 lines when the Qilang appears on scene. overall, if you are on the fence, don't read this. Maybe just read the first 70 chapters (and die of frustration afterwards) as the writing is beautiful and the translation sublime. <<less

One of the masterpiece you'll ever read in Chinese web novel historical genre. If you want to read something investing your time and emotions on it, then I recommend you this one.

This is not the stereotypical reborn novel where the MC-FL is an omnipotent Mary Sue or the ML is the ultimate cold and indifferent powerful man pampering FL to the sky. Our ML (Wang Qilang) and FL (Chen Rong) is quite 3D, they have their own advantages and flaws.

Let's talk about our FL- Chen Rong, she is not OP... more>> despite being reborn. She doesn't have any cheat or golden finger to boot. There are very few FLs that earn my respect in web novels (I mean... you know... right...?). But I admire her so much! She earned my respect. She knows what she wants. She would rather marry a poor scholar or become a nun (I mean.. literally!) than become a concubine of ML. She knows self-respect (which is unfortunately rare in various romance novels). She also has her fair share of inferiority complex and lack of sense of security issues, but that doesn't stop her from going against *societal* norms to achieve her inner peace. With or without a man. I just wish that she could've had her happiness without the various struggles that she had to go through. I pity her (though she doesn't need it). I have sympathy for her bad luck in men though.

Now, it's our ML's turn. Wang Qilang or Wang Hong (whatever you can call) is our actual ML. And YES, he IS the ML. I couldn't even figure out who the heck does the FL ends up with for half the novel. Once I thought it was Ran Min (he's scum, though it might've been easier for FL then), then of course I thought it was Wang Qilang (I'll talk about him later) and Sun Yan was also a potential candidate (I still think he's the best man in the whole novel). I even thought of Huan Jiulang one time (now don't ask me why, I had an embarrassing reason there +_+). Anyway, it's not a reverse harem so let's discuss Wang Hong here. Honestly, he gives me scummy vibes. But the masochistic maniac that I am, I thought there were moments where he displayed that he had what it took to be the ML. I'm pretty sure, you'll also feel complicated towards him. Though the times when he claims FL and shows the obsessive and paranoid side of his character, it's freaking HOT (don't judge me there, and no, it's not the *fifty shades f*cked up shit*). Though I would've to say-

Do I like Wang Qilang? From third pov? Yes. I do.

Do I ship him with Chen Rong? Unfortunately, yes. Mainly because I don't want to suffer from second male lead syndrome.

If I have the chance, would I date him? Oh hell, NO! Not even in my dreams. I don't have that big of an appetite.

Of course, he has quite the flaw with all that godly looks and abilities. Despite all that judgement rant, his character is written beautifully.

There are plenty of character developments in the novel. You'll get that a lot. The side characters have enough space to maneuver and catch your attention. They are not there just for the sake of it. They have their own stories and difficulties (like the emperor, the ninth princess etc.).

And of course, there are bugs. But it is truly negligible in my opinion.

And heck, I almost thought, it was tragedy. But thank God, it's not!

P.S:

This novel content is quite heavy. The drama and emotions portrayed here are quite laborious. When you read this, you'll get the feeling you are reading some historical true story. If you're a fan of historical and drama genre, then you'll definitely love it! ^_^ <<less

I had to drop this. Too yandere for me. Honestly, I get the struggle of the ML and the MC but this is just to dark for me.

Spoiler

The final straw for me was when they both got drugged and had s*x unwillingly (or willingly). But by doing that, the ML has removed any chance for the MC to find a normal guy to be happy with. That jerk. Also, I felt those moments that the ML hates her pretty face. Finally, I think MC and ML's relationship is to toxic.

1 extra star just because the translated did a really good job. I read all the way to chapter 184, but honestly, I don't think I can go on.

Spoiler

I still don't know who the male lead is, because honestly, the one she lost her chastity to (dodgy consent) ain't giving me the right vibes, and her ex before she transmigrated is becoming the more ideal choice. By chapter 184, I have lost all hope for both MLs, they are both tr*sh / have developed irreconcilable misunderstands with the FL.

[collapse]

I wanted to give it a chance but im done, there aint no swoonworthy MLs here, it's just all politics and chaos. Don't read if you're looking for any semblance of a good romance! <<less

This!

Very different from female portagonist novel! The weak woman who is know her own jealousy and try to live in struggle!

I pitied and sympathized with her, she really deserve for a better life.

Haa... all MLs, you guys aren't perfect and I know that. But... really... two bastards and one hardworking ML under progress.

I hope this novel still continue in translation, I want to know her story more

This book really disappointed me at one of the chapters at (maybe chapter 100/110). The characters suddenly changed, a lot. And the relationship between the ML and FL is just confusing. Can't they just stick to one side and be done with it? The FL is really frustrating. She wants to be the wangfei (so that she can be with the ML) but can only be a concubine so she 'rejects' the ML. Okay, at that point I understood her, because she wants to be with him forever and is... more>> the jealous type (ML needs to have a wangfei to have a concubine) BUT, she literally went CRAZY, doing crazy things (aka. fighting in the battlefield, etc.). Then, the ML become super attached to her. oh my god. I sigh. It was actually a pretty good story, but now... so frustrated and disappointed. <<less

Have you watched Alice in Wonderland? This was as chaotic and dramatic as that, with events happening all around, one after another, leaving you wondering if they ever get tired.

Chen Rong is the most fickle character I have seen, kind of like me. She has her baseline and her unshakeable beliefs set down quite well, otherwise she acts on emotion. Not in a careless rash way, but it doesn't take much to persuade her to change what she has her mind fixed on. The only consistent things we see is... more>> that she is not a person to bend down, give way and share her partner, she is fickle, arrogant and intelligent. Quite ironically she is humble and self-deprecating as well. If you don't think too much into what made her this way and just look at it on the surface, she is just a teenager who is still growing and having a tough time with her conflicting personality traits making her seem finicky. Which is pretty realistic since she is 15 and when she died in the previous life she was 29 and full of childish resentment.

Chen Rong and Wang Hong's relationship goes one whole cycle, from using each other, mutually liking each other, loving and caring for each other, to trusting and comprising for one another. The biggest thing that stands out in their relationship is that Wang Hong treasure her by a lot more than the usual highly favoured wife in ancient era standards, and Chen Rong does not trust his feelings for her which is valid. They are really made for each other though, with their overbearing personalities and cruel obsession with one another.

When directly comparing this era with others, we can see that the amount of importance given to family, women, children and partners is at the utmost lowest, making them a dispensable commodity. This is a key detail to understanding their relationship dynamics. Overall, it was a very dramatic relationship, the kind I never want to be involved in.

I really liked reading this, but there are a couple things that can be improved.

  • Firstly, the translation was not the best, I have seen better translations of books that have simple mindless romance plots with no character development.
  • Secondly, the author's writing style. Disclaimer! This may be just a personal opinion.
  • The author does have really good plot ideas. I just feel that it such a waste of potential with how much the author could have done to turn those ideas in revetting plot points, it was way too straight to the point at times. On the other hand when it came to details about character development it was written way too indirectly, we almost get no insight to their true thoughts. There is so much that can be done in terms of foreshadowing, use of details, and involvement of side characters.
  • The story was 3 dimensional but only focused on Chen Rong, Wong Hong, and Ran Min if you know what I mean. Lastly, context is important. For anyone else that is confused by noble families suddenly going on a trip to the south, I shall give you some context.

  • The scenes after MC had gone back to the past are from the transition period from Western to Eastern Jin Dynasty. So Western Jin Dynasty has fallen, the invading barbarian tribes are running rampant through the country, and Eastern Jin dynasty has been just established in Jiankang (Nanjing) making this the new capital.
  • This place is far south to where all these nobles originally live, so these families and clans are packing up and relocating/ mass migrating to the south, and receive news on the way that the old capital LuoYang has fallen. Ultimate goal is to reach Jiankang, but temporarily stopping at Nanyang which also acts as a border that demarcates the region that Hu have not invaded.
  • War is still happening, and it is a very turbulent period of time. They protect themselves by travelling in clans and families.
As you can see, it requires a little bit of background historical knowledge to understand what is going on, so I have summarised it briefly without too much details. I took it off of wikipedia so it may not be accurate, you can research more on your own. <<less

The writing and tl of the novel is good. And the plot is very gripping that's why I kept reading despite getting immensely frustrated, the more story progresses. I liked the MC at the start of the novel, then I started to feel that her behaviours and thoughts are starting to greatly deviate from her initial characterisation but I got over it, as after 110 chaps I started to loveee the MC, because she became very strong, as in her actions and thoughts were very decisive and because she decided... more>> to get a complete break from the ass ML. Which brings me to the reason I hate this novel. I HATE the ML and she still ends up with him at the end. He is the WORST ML I have ever read and believe me I have read a fair share of them. The ML is a arrogant, pretentious and lecherous BA**ard. I hope I can transmigrate there and cut off his thing (and transmigrate back ofc). He always comes to the rescue of MC supossedly, but he always comes when the deadly crisis is already averted by the MC and he just acts as her driver and drops her home, literally believe me. He likes to hear MC saying I love you and wants her to let the world assume that they are together or will be together and shows his concern for her in front of others (which ruins her reputation so that she has no choice but to marry him if she ever marries) BUT HE NEVER ONCE SAYS HE WILL MARRY HER AS A WIFE AS APPARENTLY SHE IS LOWLY BORN AND ONLY WORTHY OF BEING HIS CONCUBINE (HIS words, (sorry slight spoiler)). The MC does not want to be a concubine EVER and she tolds the ML this and that since she loved him he can only be hers if she married him so to let her go.

I know ML is constrained by his status and can't easily marry MC (but he doesn't even try, can't he whip up some few schemes or something to either elevate her status or marry her as a concubine then promote her to be wife) , since that's so he should let her go, because the MC clearly told him that she will never be a concubine. ML doesn't respect the MC. The MC should have ended up as either unmarried or married to sun yan then I would have loved the novel <<less

How many chapter does this book has?

I can't wait for the translation any longer so I went ahead and read the MTL. I initially read it bec of hamster's awesome translation and I thought it's completely translated. The MTL stopped at 253 though and the arc looked like it is still ongoing.

I like the first half of the novel a lot. It's not about revenge but about changing her life by ignoring her husband pre reincarnation. It was inferred that she did bad things due to jealousy in her previous... more>> life and in the end burned herself to death (after her husband married her cousin) as while her husband just looked on in annoyance. She just doesn't want to be a terrible person again.

Spoiler

There's really nothing wrong with her husband, aside from him having concubines which is normal that time. It did not say what she did for him to cast her aside to the point of not touching her after marriage and she died a virg*n. He did fall inlove with her in this new lifetime a d seriously wanted to marry her no matter what even when he knows he's inlove with someone else. The time she accompanied him in camp is so peaceful, he does feel right that she's the yin to his yang, his consort Yu. But he botched it up by making her cousin his concubine. She felt like she really can't escape fate. I seriously ship them before that.)

[collapse]

Regarding the male lead. He is not a terrible person.
Spoiler

It can be considered r*pe since he took advantage of her drugged state to have s*x with her and take her v**ginity and then asking her to be his honorable concubine and not his wife. He did explain later how dangerous it is to be his wife without a powerful clan to protect her. He did not force himself on her and protected her after that.

[collapse]
He redeemed himself and is loyal to her, and saved her so many times and sacrificed his wealth and position to keep her safe and secure. He did accomplish this and gave her a good life on the MTL chapters

Spoiler

He left his clan and let go of his position to make her his wife. They lived far away from the capital and had 4 children together. The story continued to 12 years then 17 years later when they had to go back to the capital, and I think Qilang her husband had to resume his position, I tbink as hed of 5he clan because the previous head died and the clan is losing power/influence after QL left. I like the part whe 17 years later, Ran Min, the previous husband saw her with her family from afar, and he said she looked at peace and accepted that QL gave her a life where she is free and comfortable and have a happy family, while RM is still lonely. It also showed what happened in her previous life after she died. RM never forgot her after her death and thinks that nobody loved him as much as she did eventhough he has a lot of ladies, even the cousin who wasso in love him was fickle. Even after the reincarnation, the cousin is fickle and got her just dessert.

[collapse]

The MTL stopped at 253 so I'm not sure if the story is still ongoing. I wish the translator would finish but I doubt it. She really has one of the best translations. Oh well. <<less

warning this may obviously contain spoilers but ill try not to lol

after a hundred chapters rooting for the FL to turn her life round and make a 180 we literally see her go back to square one.

the male leads here are irredeemable. Currently have 3 ML (one is currently no show)

wow never have I ever read any piece of literature that made me dislike the MLS more than this. She should honestly just become her own male lead.

One of the best books I have read in a long time! I finished the book 1 year ago and still think back.

A novel with one of the best endings out there, without loose ends but enough open questions to make you think about the book for a while after finishing it. The storyline itself is good but the characters are outstanding! Especially the character development which is the reason why this is one of my favorite novels.

I am not going to talk much about the plot but more about... more>> the characters (keep in mind all from my 1-year memory)

The characters in the novel are not perfect, it doesn't matter because perfect is boring. There are too many books out there where the MC & ML have such a sweet, innocent and naive relationship, without real depth. The relationship that this MC has with ML is more realistic, talking about social constrictions, responsibility, despair, regret, hope and at the same time hopelessness.

Every action that the MC takes, in the end, is for her goal, she wants to live a life without constrictions, jealousy, hate. She doesn't want to love someone again whose heart, doesn't belong to her. It made her crazy in her old life and she knows that she will turn into the same kind of person if she just follows the flow in her new life. As a result, she took some extreme actions but it's also the reason why in the end she had ML's heart in her hand.

The ML, on the other hand, is the definition of perfection. He was born with a golden spoon in his mouth, he has the skills, the looks, the personality. However, he seems too perfect (and the MC could easily see that & take advantage of it). Everything that he has, he has never asked for, everything that he does seems natural. He is bound by his clan since he is the most promising heir to the title. Whenever he wants something he takes it, but never with force, always through manipulation. So when he met the MC he was fascinated by her, he never wanted something so much that he couldn't manipulate and take. The MC fascinated him in a way that he was willing to give up on his reputation, clan, and beliefs for her.

Second ML: very very interesting character plagued by regret by the last 1/4 of the book.

I know it sounds like the standard rebirth novel to you but this is one of the best. It is not too plot-heavy and focuses on character development. People often say: "It's not about the destination, it's about the journey." the same here, it is not about the characters having flaws but more about them learning how to deal with it.

Read this novel, you won't regret it ;) (updates are slow tho, I had to switch to RAWS) <<less

Reviewed at 72 chapters, rated 5.

Mei Gongqing is a heart-throbbing, emotion-inducing story with one of the most awesome female lead characters. At first glance, there has been many other novels in which the MC get to redo their life. But Mei Gongqing stands out due to its solid plot and characterization. The world building also feels realistic, and the scenes was very interesting with all the intrigue and maneuvers, blatant and hidden, that the MC has to take in order to survive and arrive at a different ending in her... more>> current life, despite of being trapped in the same frustrating male-dominated world.

The author excellently drives us through the MC’s days’ which are full of politic and social trap. We get to be scared when the MC’s in danger, we get to laugh when she is teased, and we feel happy when her plans end well. If you are a fan of drama or smart female lead, this one might be an excellent read for you. <<less

Had a good start but unfortunately that’s all. Hard to stomach most times. MC is forever being toyed between men, relatives and cries at every turn. She falls into every trap and acts as a passive victim. Not my cup of tea. For someone who is reborn she is really silly.

This is a novel of a heroine who has been reborn after committing su*cide. In her first life, she was an unloved concubine. No matter what she did, she couldn’t earn the love of her lord husband. And, after finally realizing this truth, she decided to end it right then and there. Preferring to die than to suffer any longer. When she finds herself reborn, back when it all began, her only goal is to find someone who will marry and love only her. Unfortunately, she belongs to a time... more>> where it’s common for men to take on multiple wives and concubines — also, the parents decide their children’s marriage. And, as someone from low birth (she’s the daughter of a concubine and her own father was the son of a concubine), there’s no hope for her to get married to anyone of a similar station as a wife.

PLOT: The rest of the story, then, is the FL struggling to find her happiness in times of war. All while her family is constantly conspiring to marry her off as a concubine. This was actually my favorite aspect of the novel. It’s interesting to see this side of things. Usually, the FL of similar novels belong to the gentry are of higher birth statuses. So, seeing her perspective as a concubine’s daughter was interesting. Especially since it was relevant to her desire. AKA, the main goal of the story.

MLs: I was quite confused by this. There’s several men that stand out at first glance to be the ML. It ended up being Wang Qilang (Wang Hong). He’s described as handsome and as dignified as an immortal. But as a man from ancient times, his views are very skewed. His family status is high, so high that even making the FL his concubine is questionable. And so the conflict commences.

OVERALL: No matter what, I do recommend that you read it! I only read the first 90 chapters, skipped to chapters 115-130, and then skipped to the last batch (195-200s). So I didn’t read it all. I didn’t think it was necessary because, as the other reviewers said, the second half of the novel is a repetitive back and forth between the FL and ML. OH, btw. I won’t be giving this an official rating cause I didn’t make it to the halfway point. It’s true that I technically read more than half the chapters, but after the first 90, I was mostly skimming to see how it ended XD. So, to make sure that I’m not rating unfairly, I won’t give a detailed star rating. For the sake of my list though, I think this novel is worth a 3.75/5. At least, the parts I read were worth that much. Idk about the rest. <<less

The translator does excellent work, and I had some hopes for this story, but honestly it's just ghastly nonsense.
The MC's characterization and motivations are incredibly inconsistent, and don't seem to be rooted in anything in particular. She wants 'Revenge' but we have yet to hear that she was particularly wronged, she vows to 'never be a concubine in this life' - but she wasn't in the last one either and that went pretty shitty for her so why is she so fixated on it? She's calm and sensible one... more>> moment and a shrieking self-sabotaging mess the next. I was really hoping this would improve as the story progressed but instead it got worse!
All of the MLs are absolute tr*sh and are of course obsessed with her instantly for no real reason except that she's apparently hot. This story absolutely confuses love and obsession in a big way.

Also, all of this other stuff might be subjective but damn the author is extremely bad at understanding logistics. The vast majority of the plot points center around things like population numbers, how much food people need, even things like how people sitting in carriages could interact with each other, and every single one of them does not line up with anything realistic. I don't need 100% flawlessly researched historical accuracy but if you're going to make food shortage a major theme for hundreds of chapters, do a better job of it!
Plus the author seems to have a weird fixation on cannibalism, and perpetuates a lot of pretty racist stereotypes about Mongolians.

Dropped, regret reading as much as I did. The translator is very skilled though, hope they work on more projects with better source material. <<less

I have read this since 2018. My first take or shot at reading historical novels that is very heavy. The FL distinguishes herself from other FL that is Mary-sueish after being reborn. She's very normal however she's very likeable. I can't remember much because it has been years and hamster sama takes months to update (but given the heaviness of this novel it is quite alright because I cant take reading chapters by chapters of heaviness like this one). But god the ML is very hateable he is manipulative and... more>> a sad boi how I wish I could strangle him. All of her love interests are douchebags except Su Yan. Hamster gives justice to every novels she translates and every update is worth it. Just give this novel a try and be equally frustrated as me mwuah <3 <<less
