One day, Kousaka Mizuki suddenly experienced an other world trip. She was an otaku, therefore, she quickly adapted to it. She decided to live her life as a sorcerer since she had no other choice.

She lived in this other world freely using the automatic language translation bestowed onto her, and knowledge from her original world. However, reality was quite harsh.

She fully came to realize how she should treat these beautiful guys, destroying a maiden’s dream with their quirks.

“I definitely won’t raise a love flag…!”

…The country protecting her was a country where ability was supreme — extraordinary (aka genius) + peerless beauty -> there would be a great downside to them.

This is the story of a woman who died, arrived in a different world without any role, and removed obstacles while fully utilizing all of the knowledge she’d gained up until then.

The text flow is really hard to get a feeling from. Its not engaging at all and the world, human relations, politics are missing. Its like reading a resumes of chapters instead of the actual story.

Very very confusing and hard to understand. It's probably because of a combination of both poor translation and bad writing by the author. Actually the translations might've been ok if it was some other novel and had some editing or even proofreading by the translator.

The obligatory magic explanation chapter is a good example. Best to skip that chapter. All I got out of all that was MC's magic is based on imagination and is different from others in that world.

The story makes very little sense. Is it 2 countries or... more>> 1? It mentioned they merged countries in the past so why do they treat it like they haven't? Did she somehow end up in another country? There was little to no transition, she somehow went from talking to a prince from some country to helping a king in another. The writing makes it seem like they're not families and are from different countries. The king seemed too young to have a teenage son like the prince. Is he even married? MC treats him like a little brother wtf. Wants to be normal my ass. Going from wanting a peaceful normal life to suddenly under royalties, willingly listening to what others tell her to do for some reason. She's already involved too deep in sh*t with royalties and nobles. <<less

The magician wants normalcy.

But the Magician is the most Abnormal of all. Except maybe the Author.

Vapid characters, interesting idea.

The translation is not the best, and the way it's written often devolves into script-fic territory.

But the setting is kept interesting, and it manages to dodge some of the genre cliches.

It's non-s*xual Josei Action. (It's labeled Shoujo, but the tone is light Josei).

This series could be so much more, yet it fails. I don't know if this can be entirely attributed to "bad translations" or if it's because of the original, but it's fails to capture my interest. The syntax reminds me of tr*shy Japanese high school weeb fics that try to be deep. story jumps around frequently and without notice throughout a single chapter it's not even worth trying to understand. The narrator herself is unbearable and boring, it's like she's keeping a log of her daily life instead of telling a story. I see that crappyass translations (one of my favorite tl's) has stepped up to take on this series, but I feel so disheartened by previous translations that I can't bear to read through it again.

8/9/2021: went through... more>> my dropped novel list, and I can still vividly remember why I hate this novel in particular. the world building was awful and I couldn't get immersed, especially not with how bland the MC was. I think some novels do indeed execute the 'daily life dairy' writing style (kenkyou, for example), but this novel seriously fails. it's as if the author didn't do any research and wrote this novel to be published as a joke. it's like a watered down version of literally any half-decent isekai, omitting so many world building details and character personality.

i seriously wonder how it even got a manga adaptation?? the manga's alright, though, just doesn't really feel unique. overall, this series doesn't really set itself apart from other series besides the fact that the MC is strong, I guess...? that's her only personality trait tbh.

as another comment pointed out, this novel strongly reads as a script-fic. makes sense got a manga, but I seriously hope it never gets an anime... <<less

I really don't understand the translations and texts don't flow right. It would be a shame if the story is good but butchered by the translator. I haven't tried reading the raws, but with how the translations don't inspire interest, I don't think I ever will.

The story seems interesting. The MC has an unusual personality and is nothing like a typical shoujo female lead. However I think there's something fundamental missing from the writing itself. The flow of events could at best be choppy. The author seems to be an amateur at writing. The translation is alright but it might just be because the writing isn't top notch. It is hard to grasp what is happening. Even though it's been many chapters already I am still not quite sure what I have read.

I read the Foxaholic translations as well as the translated manga (available on batoto under the name "This Mage Desires Mediocrity"). A few neutral points I need to make before I go into what makes this novel bad:

    • The protagonist is a strong and smart female protagonist and that's great, we stan girls who can kick bu*t and aren't afraid to get stuff done. However, this is also one of her flaws; she's too much of a Not-Like-Other-Girls kind of girl. One of the love interests seems to love her only for her strength.
      Spoiler

Also, she says she lives for herself, but then (figuratively) becomes the dog of the prince, which I guess is living according to her wishes by extension? It's still kinda weird to me.

      [collapse]
    • The harem members are all crazy. That's it. They have little to no appeal. If you like obsessive/masochistic/etc love interests, then be my guest; it's just not my cup of tea.
The fundamental thing that makes the novel bad is that the writing is choppy and unclear. (This mostly isn't the translator's fault, because I've read a few of Lady Black's other translations on Foxaholic and those were decent enough.) The novel leaves too much information out and jumps around from point to point. The transitions between events are often very abrupt. Even though I read the manga and should be able to pick up what's happening at any point in the novel, I don't understand what's happening at all. There's too much think and not enough do.

one thing I like from this MC, her adaptation to the new world is faster than I thought. Maybe being an otaku is blessing to this person so she can apply her knowledge in the new world. I like her attitude as well. Looking forward to her meeting of her harem members (lol)

I'm reviewing this story based on the CrappyAss and Centinni translations because as the other reviewers state, the 2016 translations were a huge mess. The decent translations starting from late 2019 allowed me to actually digest the story which still ended up being a major disappointment.

The way the author writes the story is very confusing. They like to add many timeskips so there is a lot of information that is glossed over. For example, we go from chapter one being when Mizuki transports to another world then chapter two where... more>> Mizuki has settled for three months. This in itself is fine but the author adds so many boring infodumps and explanations that I would have preferred an extra chapter SHOWING these things happening. The way the author presented this was very jarring to me.

Another example is when the author puts a preview in the beginning of the chapter... when we could just read about it 2 minutes later. This is what I mean:

Spoiler

“As I said, if you guys are knights, you’re supposed to refrain from doing such shameful behavior, right?”

I lectured the kneeling knights with a smile.

Although the nearby villagers surrounded us and watched from a distance, there were some that nodded in agreement.

Current location: Genoa Village.

And this really strange scene right here had developed into this about an hour ago."

[collapse]

See, I would be fine with this if it was just one chapter but I swear to god they do this 5 chapters in a row. THIS IS NOT GOOD STORYTELLING.

I also am not a fan of the characters and main female protagonist. She has this "omg I'm so quirky" complex where she has to insist several times that she is not like those ditzy, airheaded girls. And of course, OF COURSE all of the men love girls who are stronger than them and the only person stronger than them is our main female protagonist. The main protagonist comes off as narcissistic and the love interests fall in love in one chapter due to Mizuki's strength. You would think that after self-admitting Mizuki is so "quirky" and "different from other girls" that they would fall in love due to her personality, but no. <<less

This novel so hard to understand

The premise actually really interesting, the MC perspective like everyone else than his teacher is creep, most of time she's doing inner monologue.

However, the plot and the writing feel too forced and so bad, its like reading MTL, you get the general idea but you doesnt really know what happen and why this is happen, except the novel well translated.

Most of time im reading this are skimming arround and im still get thing what happen, even if I do read correctly im unable to understand... more>> fully what happened.

I do like the idea, but the writing really make me uncomfortable.

typical world where nobles are gods and the plebs are ants, the mc's way of dealing with things is amusing, the translation can use a few cleaning but overall its a good story.
