When he regained consciousness he was already in another world. There was no meeting with a God, no cheat skills, just a sudden reincarnation. There was no time to find his bearings either, he was in a life-or-death trouble from the start that would somehow result in being employed as a valet to a vain youngster from an aristocratic family.

He would, in time, discover an astonishing truth about this new world and vow to fight it with all his might to protect the people important to him. No matter how reckless that would be.

Goddamned brilliant, an excellent mix of drama, intrigue, world-building and love story. Very very hard to find another novel like this, perfect execution of plot twists and foreshadowing, it keeps you craving for more. Totally recommended.

Also props for the translation team for the excellent translation quality.

This novel really fascinated me by its very unique story and amazing plottwists. The story itself is totally unique to other reincarnation genre novels out there and there will always be an unexpected plottwist that will overturn your hypothesis on the story.

Well the MC is smart and uses all means just to carry his objectives including the practical means (throgh women in bed). The MC maybe dense but its justifiable due to the fact that he was loyal and pessimistic towards himself.

OVERALL. ITS A GREAT READ. ID REALLY RECOMMEND... more>> IT. <<less

This review has minor spoilers within. They're not tagged using the spoiler function because it's kind of obvious.

Well, I full did not expect to enjoy this series, but it is very good and addicting. When I was reading some of these chapters, I was like "Wow. That guy (main character) 's got some f****** balls."

The main character is a reincarnated person in a fantasy world. If you've red the tags, the tag "Otome game" might catch you unaware, but it is explained later in the story (I think around chapter... more>> 16 or 15). The main character is cunning to a degree to which he can play off as many people as he needs to in order to fulfull his undying loyalty to Vincent Windmill (side character that plays the role of his master). He is essentially your perfect mysterious butler; kind of like Alfred from the Batman series in the subtle overpowered nature, but much more willing to engage in darker deeds.

Spoiler

The main character also is achromatic which is important for magic reasons, meaning that he has different colors for each eye. According to the novel, he's also a medieval Casanova, and boasts fairly good looks.

[collapse]

In terms of the plot, it's fairly well developed. We know that the main character's goal is to help his masters achieve their goals and never to let them down (typical butler plot line). There are both political and social circumstances mixed in. The drama mixes well and nothing ever really feels forced in the storyline. The fact that the main character is reincarnated and this is an otome game maintains its relevance through a manner that adds onto the drama in the plot. It does well to forward the plot because he utilizes that knowledge to help him in his circumstances consistently.

Spoiler

E.g. Something unexpected happens --> deviate from game plot line mapped out by the antagonist of story --> more drama/suspense

[collapse]

Setting is fairly well-developed. You have a decent idea of what's going on because of the author's style of writing and periodic translator/editor notes, which often mark perspective changes. The time skips aren't overly imposing on the story, but you have a clear idea of what's going on in the chapters. Side characters like other maids, etc. Serve as a backdrop to the medieval society, but still maintain a relevant position in the story. They're not categorized into "Maid #1" and so forth, but actually have personalities (somewhat). You may see them as that though because I'm a really detailed reader, so I pick up on a lot of stuff other people don't. <<less

Two people, one body... Still dense as a mother f***er.

Story is cute and dark, odd.

You're used to otome isekais or transmigration stories, usually in the view of a protag.

... more>> But this one is different, you're in the view of a side character as he tries to do his best to fulfill his duties.

Aside from that, the aforementioned dark element to this story. Which helps further differentiate it from other stories.

Sadly though, the one thing this story has in common with most jp releases is the MC being so dense that I'm afraid that if the girl in question marries him and has his child, MC wouldn't even notice her feelings for him. <<less

Came for Ordinary Isekai story, left with awesome plot, tragedy, plot twist, politics, economics, and great romance..

First I dislike it because the prota is constantly getting harrassad by the female prota because of a little jealousy, though not as harsh as the one in zero no tsukaima..

But now... I glad I keep reading till this point.. Definitely not the story I was hoping for, but the amount of interest in keep reading till the end has now reached critical point.. I really wished it could get translated faster..

At first I was doubtful about this novel but having given it a chance I was pleasantly surprised. This is easily one of the best written novels on this site.

Characters are more than just one-dimensional stand in archetypes. Generic tropes are never relied on in place of actual thought-driven constructive writing. The main character, although a stellar individual, is a far cry from being a perfect Gary Stu that powers through every obstacle through chance, coincidence and plot armor. The story is well-written and gives an interesting take on an... more>> already tried and tired genre that has been up to this point in time thoroughly beaten to death by the innumerable pens of hordes of mediocre authors.

Love, Revenge, Kingdom-building, trope subversion, satire, Character build up and development, drama and catharsis - all these and more are present in this story and the presentation of these topics and themes were refreshing.

This is a novel worth reading and is a new take on a familiar setting that will keep you wanting more. Give it a try and see for yourself, you probably won't regret it.

I have a few (okay, maybe more than a few) complaints about the magic system, but I'll behave myself just this once. <<less

This rating FEELS wrong. Cause the majority of this novel is excellent, maybe 70%.

But fk the experience in the last 30% killed me. Reversing most of the narrative tools and characterizations for seemingly no reason. Coupled with the HORRIBLE site made reading this a pain.

Man I loved most of this story but you should quit after the Merica arc.

An incredible novel with a nice plot. I couldn't stop myself from reading it a binge. From start to before the end, the arc novel didn't disappoint me. In this type of genre, the protagonist should have played the game or should have at the least heard about its name from somewhere else but in this novel, it is stated later after a few arcs and with the start of the academy arc that the world is of an otome game, which was unusual and interesting and kept me invested... more>> in the novel. The author gives some hints here and there that the world is of the Otome game. There are many twists and turns in the novel that you will enjoy. The interactions between MC and fMC are incredible and it's fun to enjoy how they fall for each other. Yes, the novel is harem but MC only adores marquis's daughter (i don't remember her name). Overall, the novel is great to read in its genre. The only problem with the novel is its ending or the full end arc. The ending arc is highly rushed and dull, and the novel doesn't get an adequate conclusion which it should have been given. I was highly disappointed after reading the end arc of the novel on MTL. Still, if ignored, you will enjoy this great novel. <<less

I'm mostly writing this because I've seen some low scores for this story that I don't really feel warranted. Sure, it's not to everyone's taste, but it doesn't mean the story itself is bad per se.

Score: The story is on the more realistic/gritty side than idealistic, so I appreciate the realism. Plus, the pacing is pretty good, no overly-long monologues or internal thoughts that drags, so that earns the story around 4.2 - 4.5 stars from me.

EDIT: After finishing the first arc and entering the second arc/grand world arc, I... more>> wanted to change this to 5 stars. Damn. It has more in-depth worldbuilding now, even if it's from fief management.

World: Not that different from most generic, faux-medieval fantasy settings with magic in these isekai or rebirth stories. (Spoilered for compactness)

Spoiler

Magic seems elemental here, and elemental magic mastery in the kingdom is dominated by the noble houses. The one that prevails over fire is the current dynasty, the other three elemental magics of water, earth and wind are held by the king's strongest vassals. The MC enters the service of the Windhill House who, you guessed it, masters wind magic.

[collapse]

It would later be revealed that the world was originally a game world. Any weirdnesses from that? Well, later on, there's an unseen force that seems to be trying to move the canon arc forward in unexpected ways even as more aspects change. Let's just call it the World. As someone who doesn't put much stock into determinism, I'm not a fan of it. But eh, it only really seems stronger around the demon beasts attacks. Also, later on, there's the nitty-gritty of managing a fiefdom, though! That felt nicely solid and real.

Protagonist: Rion, is actually the result of the gradual merging of Ryou and Flay, but their split-personality persists for a while. As he merges into Rion, his experiences as a beautiful-looking boy from the slums who had been used and abused is part of him too. This also explains why his sense of morality isn't the straightforward, civilised-modern-world morality. His desperate drive to survive and gain power to have a lot more teeth. Nature red in tooth and claw.

Story Setup: At a glance, the setting looks similar to other J-light-novel based stories that are lighthearted and fun. This isn't that story. In terms of darkness/grittiness, I feel that it's closer to the many historical c-novels I've read. You know, the way the nobles fight for power, scheme, subterfuge and try to get each other killed or to drag their reputations through mud. Rion saved a noble brat lost in the slums by killing somebody, but then he passed out, and that brat took the effort to carry him out as he escaped. This is Vincent, noble brat and heir to Windhill. Just as impressed and interested is his sister Ariel, the villainess character, not that Rion even realises that this was the setting of an otoge in Ryou's life.

General Plot Direction: (spoilered for length) Rion feels grateful to both Vincent and Ariel, because as bratty and lacking in manners as they are, they fought and argued with their parents to get him to stay with them. This was how he ended up as Vincent's valet. Ariel is clearly sharper than Vincent, as she knows getting Rion on her brother's side means that she can help him improve his chances of holding on to his position as heir (their father had an illegitimate son, Erwin, from a maid-slash-concubine). Both of them insists that Rion attends their classes with their private tutors too. This is how he notices things, like how the magic teacher hasn't even been teaching Vincent real magic (Rion had some talent here too, so he could tell when the instructions were useless).

It was one of the examples of how he realised that Vincent's faction, being blunt and straightforward in wielding power, was actually unprepared for subterfuges and knifes in the dark. So, he appoints himself as bodyguard and spy.

As soon as he settles in his new life, there are maids in the place that eyes his appearance covetously and pushes themselves on him. The adult-side of Rion, knowing that he was lacking in power, and could not compete with the reach of Erwin's faction, took the decision to let them take advantage of him. Later, he would blackmail them with the prospect of mentioning the liaison with Ariel, unless they pass on rumours or news they've heard. This is how he builds his first information network.

Spoiler

The writer doesn't make this titillating. It's clear that Rion hates it, loathes the way he feels that he couldn't take a bath soon enough once morning comes. Ariel could figure out what happened herself and was angry (intensely jealous, not that shed even'analyse where that anger came from). He pointed out that with Vincent's current unfavourable position, and bad rumours about him they can't even locate the source of, they needed their own information sources. She's smart and pragmatic enough to agree even if she didn't like it.

[collapse]

Is this sketchy? Yeah. Is it anything extraordinary? Sadly not. Honeypot tricks happen all the time in the shadows of the Cold War even in our world. Are those adults perving after Rion paedophiles? Probably yes. I understand if him intentionally subjecting himself to the pe*verts' attentions while hating it personally is not anyone's idea of a relaxing read though, so yeah, might as well skip this story.

Are there other sketchy things in this story? You bet there is. When Rion realised he needs even more power, he even went back to the slums he came from, entered the crime base he'd been in before, and killed a few beligerent people with magic. Then he declared his intention of taking over the place. Is his need for a power base warranted? Yeah. There were clues that the movement to supplant Vincent with Erwin also has support/interference from not just their vassal houses, but also other at least one of the other major noble houses. It still makes him a crime lord here.

TL:DR: Boy from the slums with transmigrated memories was saved by a bratty noble heir and his villainess tsundere sister. He becomes their valet, takes noble lessons with them. He realises that there is the concubine's faction that is trying to supplant the heir with his bastard brother. He feels grateful for the sibling's interest and decides to appoint himself bodyguard, and after seeing the scale of the intrigue involved, spymaster as well.

The crown prince exists as the technical almost-fiancé of the villainess girl, but the three main characters don't regard him much other than as a source of power and an annoying responsibility. A lot of fights and intrigue happen. Noble brat feels conflicted, knowing that as a noble he should dissuade his sister and valet from getting involved, but part of him couldn't help but cheer for them. MC realises his world is from a game at some point and gears up to face the heroine too. Some romance happens later on. <<less

The main plot is about how our MC struggle against the will of the world that's RPG game like with otome element and it's main protagonist.

The premise is interesting; smart MC with a Ceasar like personality; a FML that's worthy to be call the "villainess", not like other fML in the same otome genre. And the romance between them are just sweet and so well written that make you cant stop grinding. In fact this is the reason i've come back to reread it a second time.

The writing style is... more>> good; smooth transition between paragraph that wont make you feel awkward; the dialogue feel very natural; action and battle scene are easy to imagine and make u on edge; char development is oke as well, although to the end MC has become so OP that make the action not as thrilling as before.

That to said, it has fault as well. While I can appreciate the author for dare to try something new, I dont like some of his concept and feel confuse about it sometime (yes im talking abt you, world chan)

To conclude, a solid 4 + 1 because how enjoyable it is to me. <<less

This is a really good isekai novel. The protagonist is really good. He thinks logically and he's prepared for almost everything. That "almost" has a big price most of the time though. Starts as a classic otome game isekai like novel with good world development and complicated characters.

Spoiler

I liked everything about it except for the last arc. Last arc is before it's start it makes you go "I didn't expect this?! What's MC going to do now in a situation like this?!" Except author decides to focus on almost every other characters and keep the suspemsion. He shows up time to time but there are some stuff like for example: He becomes the king of his own country. We were told how he becomes the king but then author says the country he built became a huge deal in the world. I wanted to see that! That would have been 100 times more interesting than what you have told in the last arc!

There's also the fact that he lets go the guy who killed a person dear to MC and his wife. Author really works hard so that the guy doesn't die. The prince who executed Vincent, turns out to be Mc's blood related brother. And he reforms himself. It's also told many times that taking revenge on him would badly effect Mc's life obviously. In the end even I was conflicted if he should.

Another thing is that author builds a small harem but destroys it in the end. Main girl was the villainess from the start but there are 2 other girls start to like MC later on. One of them just merges with FMC and the other goes back to the prince who paid no attention to him until she started liking the MC.

the story delved to deeply into politics like how the kingdom was still recovering from the demon threat and all that and the story looked away from rion too much. Really the only thing that made me keep interest was the romance between arial and rion but even that was not enough to keep the story interesting. Even the other characters were too detestable, they had killed someone precious to them and now they just want to make up like nothing happened.

The Great: Good attempts to look at the difference in behavior and cultural assimilation of a isekai.

The Good: Deconstructs wish-fulfillment protag with cheat powers and modern knowledge, such as the concept of plot armor

The Average: Charter development exists for the cast, better than your generic stuff, but not a classic.

Read other 5 star reviews and most of them summarize the feelings I have for this novel. The one issue I have is the lack of consistent updates. This is an amazing novel that is being left to dry and deserves more attention. I don't know the situation of the TLs, so I won't bash them for their lack of updates. I loved this novel and really want to read it till the end of it. One thing I hate about the other reviews however, is the lack of thought... more>> put into them. They bash the novel for either unreasonable demands, or for changing characters when, as an author, giving emotion to your characters is your job.

It starts decently slow, but picks up after about ch 35. I thought it was generic tr*sh at first as well, but after reading it, it had me hooked for 2 days with minimal sleep (christmas break). I hope anyone reading this sees the novel in the same way that I do.

Try the novel for yourself and either hate it, love it, or just don't care.

Edit: I am just now fully realizing 2 weeks after writing this review, why I love this novel so much. Besides all the grandeur, it is just a story of a guy that is trying his best to change what he believes is wrong. Whether he wins or loses, he tried his best against all odds, and was cool whilst doing it. This is the type of novel I would like to see more of. Most novels I read have characters too shallow, or settings too undeveloped, which all makes the story into a mess of plot holes. This makes me feel like I'm reading an ancient text of a hero, even if there are issues, they are flattened due to the amazement present when reading. <<less

I give this series 2/5, cause, at least, the beginning and romance part is good.

This series has too many contradictions at the plot, well this was a WN, my hope was quite high when read the reviews of this series and before I read this, I just read some masterpiece that also a WN (Kaettekite mo Fantasy). And after read it till 33, I stop read it. This one is shit.

There too many plot hole at this series and that plot hole, at many time make a s*upid incident.... more>> And author didn't even have any will to explain it, he/she just make use convenient concept of that world.

Spoiler

At earlier chapter, our MC said spirit (magic source at that world) has a mind and can think even though it was a simple one. As example there spirit of FML lead her to the place our MC located, and spirits of MC thought if MC meet FML then MC will happy so they didn't give any warning to MC.

BUT. At later chapter, the person that our MC respect (I quite like his character) will be executed and so our MC 'tried' to save him, but that person refuse it cause his pride and then died to cover our MC from magic spell that launced to MC when they still debating (it was at middle of execution and many enemy watched).

What tf even spirit do at this moment? They just silent and let that person died. Ain't they has a mind? Then they must know that if that person died, MC will be saddened, even though they know what will make MC happy but they didn't care about what make MC sad? s*upid, f*cking s*upid.

[collapse]

And not just that, there many s*upid things happen but without any explanation from author.

Spoiler

That f*cking king was so Incompetent, law and order at that kingdom is shit. Knight and soldier is f*cking useless and what their work did just make thing worst. How tf even that f*cking kingdom became big...

Royalty, mainly king at this series are USELESS, incident that connected to children of three big house in that Kingdom, but the king didn't know anything, he didn't care about it and he just let the f*cking useless investigator did work.

Even when there a Execution of a Child from One of Big Three Noble Family and a banishment of prince's fiancee, he didn't care and just know that at middle of execution. Even worse that he was f*cking slow

But when something bad happen they make it as if the King care and act as if he sad.

Is this king even do any work?

They didn't even give any punishment to culprits, even when what they did is a planned mu*der plus false accusations without any proof.

[collapse]

And then for last thing

Spoiler

The person that MC respect the most choose to die even though he still can live, he just choose something simple, die and give a will to his companion. He just give them a CURSE (from my opinion) and died as if he care about them and died to protect them.

Even though I quite like his character and at earlier chapter he said that he has a determination to get rid of his pride if there time that pride will be hindrance.

But at last moment, he died cause of his pride that so f*cking useless and that just make me very angry.

This novel is great. The characters are well defined, or should I say non-linear, as they actually have good growth.

A great story up till the 3rd arc. After the fight with the demon god it just turnt into torture to read. MC is absent most of the time and its all about the turd called Maria. After the fight with the demon god is the perfect time to drop this. It has a lot of unexplained holes in the plot but what follows kills the story.
