This is honestly the best Chinese web novel I know of. The normal weaknesses are not there except for one and it has maintained a consistent quality for over a thousand chapters which is amazing to me. Though this novel does not truly deserve 5 stars, I will give it to the novel because it surpasses everything else I have seen out the genre to date.

Characters: I am honestly pretty amazed at how much work and time has gone into characters other than the main character. You normally never see... more>> this in a Chinese cultivation novel. You even get peeks at what happened to the much lower level characters who are left in the dust by the MCs cultivation speed. Then there are also characters who show up more regularly who work with the MC and continue to do so even after the MC greatly surpasses them and are not just left to the wayside as the scale of power increases. They even go their own ways and we get to see parts of their paths as they try to increase in power even if its not a big focus or it never really affects the MC. The only true weak part on the character side of things is the villains. While not all of them are weak there are still plenty of arrogant dumbasses who think everything will go their way because of where they were born or what organization they belong to. But there are some decent ones who stick around and become somewhat important recurring characters in the long run and form interesting relationships with the MC.

World Building: I was actually pleasantly surprised by the world building in this novel. While the world still has the uselessly large scale for no purpose, the regions of the world that are visited have their own distinct cultures and we have only physically visited to of the provinces so far. Its also nice to see that the government in actually the main force of the world's order and civilization despite still seeming impractically corrupt. This also make the dynamic between the government organizations and the different sects a very big deal and it shows clear difference in their cultures. Then there is also the underground society of Daemons who live separately from humans but have their own functioning society that occasionally clashes with the humans. Overall a much more detailed and lived in world than most other Chinese novels which basically feel like points of interest for the character to go to with nothing important in between.

Cultivation System: I wont say to much on this but it is the weakest part of the novel. Again we get an ill-defined system with some familiar sounding stages that have vast power differences between them that makes fighting higher level opponents impossible (Except for MC of course). Except for the Daemon's innate abilities, cultivation can just be described as fancy magic where to get stronger you gather more "mana" and the more "mana" you have they higher rank you are. Then the way you gather "mana" is your cultivation style and the techniques you use. To me it just feels like a really gimmicky mage. <<less

A great cultivation novel. It has all the perks while evading many usual disadvantages. It goes in quite unique route and doesn't simply copy same events usually seen in xianxia over and over.

I very much recommend.

Both the translator and the author have done a beautiful job in writing this novel. The anchored personalities, and the flow of the story is amazing.

I won't give a needless description of this story, read the first 5 chapters and you will realise its quality by yourself, because - a capable person will shine no matter what he does. In this case, the author, translator and this novel. My sincere gratitude to Pipipingu for taking up this novel.

First, give this novel read! Be sure to make up some free time as well! The novel is superb and has great writing. Something that's hard to come by and great story building aswell. But, the thing you're wondering to your self is, is the translation actually good? Readable? 100% The translater does a awesome job at it and sometimes feel like my English goes up a little in stead of going down. Also, the story doesn't have some shitty op main character, the strength he has and how it... more>> works against others gives you excitement. Not just some guy going against some bots, farming mfs in there. Stop reading this, and start read the novel! <<less

Wow wow wow... I can't believe how good this novel is. It has all the interesting genre I can think about and it's not so much clichéd as other wixia/xanxia novel.

For a fun, light and breezy read, you won't regret making this your first option.

Hands down one of the most fun novels i've read at the time of writing this review.
Least amount of tropes that ive seen by far. (Cant remember any young masters from the wealthy clans at all or "mountain tais")
You should read it if you want an unsual MC, whose fun, ruthless and never takes a step back infront of the throubles.
The cultivation and power scaling is done well enough not bore you to death and MC doesnt steamroll everyone since chp 1.
Harem and HHH side of things is there if you are into it.

I love this novel. I've been following it for years and it's always a joy to read. Standard cultivation novel storyline but the quality is up there with the better ones.

A welcome surprise.

This novel was something I had on the backburner for ages and honestly, I didn't expect much from it but I was proven wrong.

The main character reincarnated to unfortunate circumstances where his fate led to mediocrity he was a gem in the rough nothing more than a farm boy until he met his greatest friend. The grazing ox he looked after turned out to be a supreme expert in cultivation he gave the main character a path to walk where there was none.

The story eases you into the... more>> mystical side of cultivation with Classic Jianghu of people fighting with fists and weapons putting the main character in dire odds over and over but, don't let this turn you away the story shows a healthy amount of restraint building the story, character and plot around it to the point you feel heavily invested. The main character will fight the strongest enemies, eat and drink the greatest delicacies and f*ck the most beautiful women, with an overarching goal to reach for the stars and reunite with his grazing ox.

I love this novel in all its glory for the characters it builds, the stories it tells and the author showing care for his story by restraining it from wearing its welcome.

Read this story if you have a basic understanding of wuxia and a good understanding of xiaxia. <<less

MC: Well-defined, the author did an excellent job into building him into a "person", he loves freedom he will lie and might even be hypocrital at times, and he won't really deny it to himself, he wants to do whatever he feels like, different from other MCs that "only fight because I must" he is a battle hungry person but while he might be s*upid in certain aspects he is not mentally disabled like certain MCs out there

Cast of characters; What I feel this novel does quite well its that... more>> it shows certain characters and you will see their development, how they matured, some can see through schemes and it doesnt take MC "genius" to allow them to see through it, there is certain characters that show more often through the story and could very well fit on part of "main characters" the author seems to build up for this certain individuals have their own path

Cultivation: simply but meaningfull, the start of MC cultivation is pretty slow but it picks up later on and becomes fast

Something else I like is that the autor does a very good job at being consistent with the work as a whole, be it characters, the world and abiltiies and not randomly forget stuff all the goddamn time <<less

I tried to read this story twice. The first time was a few years ago and I couldn't remember exactly why I dropped it. Finding it by accident on the site and reading the advice of those encouraging to start with the new translation, I said to myself, "Maybe the translation was terrible and I gave up because of that since I remember the premise was interesting."

I have to say that this was probably not the case. The story does indeed have interesting premises - starting in a small village and immersing us in its family politics, which is rare - but it soon shows its major weaknesses. First, the protagonist, a reincarnated person who has been forced by circumstances to live with his head bowed for many years, orphaned of both parents and living with a brother and a sister-in-law who mistreat and undernourish him, exploiting and abusing him. For a person with several years behind him, his character is extremely dull. In 30 chapters, particularly after the breaking point with his family, he has expressed himself almost exclusively with short sentences usually closed with an exclamation point. He has rare moments of reflection, but of little depth and tends to act rather than think, as if he were an impetuous kid who lives to be recognized as strong by others. The author tries to pass off this attitude as self-confidence, but it is clear that this is not the case, because a self-confident person does not need to constantly seek recognition from others with acts of arrogance and strength. Unfortunately, this is not just a flaw of the protagonist, but we'll get to that later.

Of the secondary characters, the only interesting ones are those who will probably accompany him for the rest of the story: the little ghost and the ox. I think they are also the only two well-written characters we encountered far, but unfortunately, their deepening, for now, remains marginal, as their presence in the work, which focuses more on the "deeds" of the good old protagonist.

And here we come to the other characters. If you take the main character and paste it on adults, you will have 50% of the other characters with a name. The other 50% are like the main character, only even more arrogant and with petty tendencies, and these are usually the boring, boring antagonists.

The story had a great premise, which was to explore the world and experience the best it had to offer, but for now, exploring the world seems to mean meeting mean, petty people and killing each other.

Ultimately, it falls into the usual boring stereotypes of Chinese wuxia and that's a shame because it started well, it was down-to-earth and the characters were flawed but believable because of this. Coming out of the initial village all that ends quickly, and so my interest.

A note on the translation. It has a good vocabulary, but tends to be overly artificial in the structure (I don't know if it's the translator's fault or the author's) and has several grammatical smears that clash with the flowery style, making it even more artificial. So a decent translation, but it could be better (and perhaps over time it has become so).

To conclude: not that bad, not that good, average. Mao Ni works in the same genre are better and more well written.

The MC is grey, which is intriguing. He’s not a vile person who does disgusting things. Rather, he has his morals. He’ll do whatever he want, and he doesn’t choose the means to an end. He’s very tolerant of his partners. I stopped because each chapter is long and there are 842 chapters. I might continue hahahah

A decent read. The MC has OP cultivation technique that takes time to unlock and cultivate.

The world building doesn't seem so apparent as of chapter 440s+. But there are vague signs of other world travel.

The factions are well designed. Plots and counter plots are laid out nicely. There are some obvious items that appear conveniently for MC's sake.

... more>> Unnecessary explanation exists. Bear with it, or skip chapters. There instances when chapters are written too long and would not affect the reader's understanding of the story even when they are skipped.

Here's hoping for a swift translations and stable story line. Would recommend. <<less

So far its notably better than the average for this genre. So far the writing is decent. Plot moves along well enough. Side characters have some character. Possible harem members are varied and interesting. Some good hints of stuff to come. Sometimes dialogue and reactions seem a bit questionable, one character in particular keeps saying really lame and s*upid lines that leave everyone in awe of how great and likable his personality is.

This novel is one of the best in the genre among those I read. It manage to have above average story and characters, but at the same time don't deviate from standard formula too much to make reader bored - there are always challenges, level ups and enemies, there is no boring arcs where nothing happens like in most "plot based" novels. So far world building is consistent and there is no major plot holes either. Even though novel use standard xianxia power system (qi refining, foundation building, golden dan... more>> and nascent soul realms), but it actually have much more original cultivation system than most novels, specially in case of MC.

Author could make us feel that even weaker enemies not just random small fries, but actually people with power and status, at least in current environment of MC. For example (and comparison) in Will is Eternal MC was from the start put in the sect with Nascent Soul level elders so it was unavoidable what almost all enemies he met felt like just insignificant characters, at least until he become more powerful. This novel on contrary allow you to have a feeling of "frog in a well" by gradually making a level of environment higher, starting from small insignificant village where just being brave is enough to intimidate most people and become respected strongman. But unlike novels like MGA there is no such exaggerated feeling as if author tries to cheat us and making ants look strong, power progression feels realistic and making perfect sense.

This novel feels somehow similar to Reverend Insanity (Gu daoist) in terms of how it could integrate "weak to strong" theme with decent story and characters, also MC here not easy going "hero of justice", he could do cruel things, but unlike MC from RI he is human-like and relatable. And you actually could see how his character changes step by step, even in later parts of the novel there are some character development. Also there is one certain character who reminds me about MC from RI, she is very nice girl actually, lol.

Overall, so far, this is a novel which is worth it to read RAWs. Too bad it was put on hiatus and based on relatively slow cultivation progression it is unlikely what within 1600 chapters story reached its apex. But it is not so bad, considering what most such novels have shitty and / or rushed endings anyway.

upd. After reading to 1300+ chapters I eventually dropped it when last completed book started. Like it is common for those type of novels it become worse after transcending to new world. Some cultivation stages get skipped, story become rushed and old characters play lesser role in the plot even if they were important before. You could read and enjoy this story to fullest though if you just stop after they defeat main enemy in starting world. It is on hiatus anyway, so no big deal. <<less

Okay. The story is not bad, but there are moments where it is cringe-worthy or uncanny.

The story itself is alright with its interesting plot and energetic pacing, but you can see those moments when the events are really forced and contrived with characters and setting elements that just pops up to move the plot or artificially create tension or the MC (and other characters) forced to act in ways to create conflict when they should be easily avoidable.

The setting is rather underdeveloped with a lot of it unexplained or just... more>> thrown to the readers with no warning. Like these Wolf Guards. Poof! A few of them appear in this very remote place where the MC is for contrived reasons. There are just these things that just come out of nowhere. I know this is a common problem with these kind of stories but this story handle it with even less grace that your typical Xianxia.

I know that this is a fantasy story and would surely have rather bizarre characters, but, some of the characters (like the MC) feels like they are delusional and fit really well in psychiatric hospitals. They are just so out of touch with reality and have extreme values that are just absurd, even considering the setting they are in. It makes them really unrealistic and hard to empathize with or relate to.

Most of the characters are otherwise rather flat and forgettable. The author sometimes put in some twist in the character, but it often just feels out of place and gimmicky or annoying.

So, on the whole, this story is rather enjoyable to read, but otherwise, it still falls into the pitfalls of a typical Xianxia novel. It has a better than average plot, but with the typical vague setting and poorly realized characters.

For people who like to read xianxia novels, it more than satisfy, but otherwise, it's a xianxia. It is what you expect a xianxia novel would be. <<less
