It's a blast! We can see up close that the author has evolved and he is now writing more for the audience than for the actual intellectual level of the novel because you can actually feel the friendly air about it when you reading it. Er Gen switched from a cold way of showing the cultivation world to showing the cold cultivation world through a more friendly and funny way because he created the story itself to be a comedy-like but still feel that we are part of the cold... more>> cultivation world. I really like how the author is growing as a writer and you should feel the bliss of a good novel yourself so please do read this masterpiece. <<less

Er Gen has made a name for himself with novels such as Renegade Immortal, ISSTH (especially ISSTH 10/10) and now A Will Eternal. His writing is creative and manages to avoid falling into repetition in a way that many other authors fail to, and makes it funny enough that I regularly have a good laugh, while keeping it serious and dramatic in the more crucial moments. The protagonist BXC is an important part in this because of the unique personality that characters in We Gen novels have, and he sticks... more>> to it. Overall solid and definitely recommend! <<less

As always Er Gen lives up to his name.

Unlike his other novels Er Gen has unlocked his comical side here (until now) at it's greatest potential.

Really light and refreshing novel, the way the MC is always overpowered never gets boring.

Always surrounded by beauties, life full adventure, luck, willpower upricht ethics by the MC and the side characters reaction to his "oopsies' are always funny to read.

Really nice side of Er Gen.

Worth the read!

Really funny, much better than typical cookie cutter chinese novels like Wu dong qian kun or MGA. MC actually has a personality and the story isn't repetitive unlike almost all other xianxia.

I wrote a really long review praising the uniqueness of this novel and exhorting all of its impressive accomplishments. But I think all of that pales in comparison to what this novel really boils down to.

If you enjoy laughing at your friend doing s*upid things then this novel is for you.

Bai Xiaochen is the most realistic character in any novel I have read on this site. You all know someone who is like this. And that feeling of authenticity carries this novel as you enjoy the journey of this s*upid... more>> kid who wants to live forever.

If you can read up to Sect Uncle Bai without laughing out loud then I doubt you are really human.

Try it. You won’t regret it. <<less

I really believe ErGen has outdone himself this time around. First of all this just shows how much imagination and creativity he has, because pretty much every detail and event has a meaning and purpouse. And secondly he managed to detach himself from his previous type of writing which was mainly focused on cultivation and cultivation only, adding a bit of humour and making the story a bit lighter for the reades.

So much more than other novels of the same ilk. The MC is a frustrating idiot but lovable. Some chapters made me crack up loud which is very rare for me.

You can tell that the author is really enjoy writing this. So refreshing from other novels of this genre. It's fresh, not at all cliche, characters are well done without the extremely annoying and low self esteem way of over explaining and over telling of unimportant subjects. This is the only wuxia novel I rush to see if there are... more>> updates and give donations to.

An extremely enjoyable read.

I usually hate harem novels and have begun to not even touch novels that have that tag, but this story has been surprisingly refreshing for it's new spin on so many traditionally cliche situations. The harem issue also hasn't really cropped up too much so far and I'm hoping that trend continues. Overall just a fun and awesome read and I'm always looking forward to what is coming next.

Before I begin, I want to mention that I read in mtl version.

This novel is pretty good. There are a lot of funny moments (lol) that can described the shamelessness of MC. The pace of the story is not too fast and slow. However, the disappointment came. The jokes are repeated and became irritated.

Moreover,

After MC became the hostage of big sect and went to the Border. The story pace was freaking slow. At this time MC was the peak of Gold Core and need to find 5 celestial souls consist of 5 elements to become Heavenly Dao Nascent Soul. During this period, the story repeated a lot and too slow. It took almost 400 chapters with boring stuff (in my opinion), but after this, It's fine

At first this novel reserved 4.5+/5, but now 4/5 <<less

To me, this novel is basically like coiling dragon to the community. After having to momentarily stop reading to catch my breath from laughing to hard, throughout the novel, I enjoyed reading the story enough to ignore any faults that may be there. So as a 100% biased review, I really enjoy reading this translation, & I hope you reading this will too.

A honest review by an average reader

To sum it all up this novel is pretty good.

Main character's main motivations and morals are clearly defined and he doesn't stray from them. In fact when he does go against them, it makes perfect sense not like other novels where the MC are "kind, naive, or innocent" etc. And totally act greedy (Prime example being MC from Perfect World. I despise that little shitter)

The story and MC in this novel are hilarious. He's mischievous in a very fun way that won't make... more>> you hate him. Story is really slow at first but really picks up. Also I like the side characters as well

what a ride man, the laughs, the tears, er gen is really a genius! you will hardly see such a novel in which you can realize that... everything that happened across the novel was planned!

dont get me wrong, not everything im sure he changed a thing or two while he wrote the novel, but to see a novel in which the title of the novel and even the sinopsis are so meaningful

"One will to create oceans. One will to summon the mulberry fields. One will to slaughter countless devils. One... more>> will to eradicate innumerable immortals.

Only my will... is eternal."

like damn!!!

and leaving aside that, this novel has been by far one of the best I've read here at NU!!, I laughed until my stomach hurt like hell in some chapters! <<less

Never have I laughed more, except when reading "running away from the hero"
You can't help but love the characters, and I mean not just the main character!

Its a refreshing change to have our MC be supported by the sect and go through character growth inside it while also being introduced to memorable and funny characters inside the story that we would otherwise have labeled as cannon fodder in other novels.

My honest view regarding translation

Spoiler

the translation current style seems boring and uninteresting. Clear but expressed in serious or formal style. they even omitted one or two and even mistranslated (so far only notice 1 mistranslated but being ignored when I comment for it. TY). The shameless humour seems thin down with this style of translation and I didn't even felt the bloodthirst and anger when BX expressed it in DB translation unlike what I naturally felt when reading XX translation (i even felt teary at some chapter). so ill drop it until it reaches the last chapter from XX since I cant bear reading MTL. Better off reading LoHP (yup that qidian) than wasting time reading something that kills the mood especially when u had already read from XX site. Despite the claim for XX work being MTL, I love how XX edit the work to make it readable and enjoyable albeit having many errors in the term used. I am BS?so what. I still gonna drop this gem despite how valuable it is.

[collapse]

+previous comment is based on XX work so check the latest comment from others to get the better view of it. For me, it sucks. (1/9/17)

+I didn't even laught when reread at WW: What happen to phoenix, what happen during the thunderstrike, what happen when BX felt from first trying to fly, What happen during the competition... basically I didnt even remember at what scene I laught when I start rereading at WW.

+i had a good laugh even when rereading from XX (due slow translation but I still wait patiently for it by rereading) before WW start to translate it.

+ (19/9/2017) As expected, the current translating does indeed make you understand the storyline better than XX, but I wonder... why the style used in XX is more emotional than WW... I cant read the Chinese words but at least why XX translation word seemed more original than WW that keep omitted simple thing like this:

XX
Spoiler

"A hundred and thirty days!"

"He used five times the amount of time compared to Senior Brother Gui Ya to achieve enlightenment, but the length of his enlightenment was also five times the amount of time as Senior Brother Gui Ya!"

[collapse]

WW

Spoiler

"130 days!"

"He took five times as long as Eldest Brother Ghostfang to enter deep enlightenment, and spent five times as long inside!"

[collapse]

Furthermore, at this chapter, I should felt nervous, anticipating and excited to know what happens to Bai Xiaochun but WHY I only just understand the content without feeling something that should pique my previous interest... this is like eating a bland loaf of white bread with no seasoning or serving or topping or whatever it is...

Oh well, at least he releasing a fast update now to catch up to XX work left behind. Kudos, despite that I still hate this style of translating... <<less

While AWE has flaws, I think it is overall a much better experience than a lot of cultivation novels. Bai Xiaochun (BXC) is a very unreliable narrator and a sort of charismatic miscreant or an idiot savant with his gut feelings. The story holds a lot of the early cultivation novel charm for much longer than most series, carried on the back of BXC being a more empathetic and enjoyable protagonist, with his goals and ideals being more grounded, if not naive.

Does the good make up for the bad?

I would... more>> say so. I am keeping my rating a 4/5 because the ending does feel lackluster, but I think that is more of how most cultivation novels usually end up, where the characters zoom through details compared to the meticulous sequences and strides made early on.

Spoiler

Bai Xiaochun does eventually change when he has to take responsibility for his friends, family, and factions, but he never hits that point until the freedom from the ancestor world. The journey from him being a complete coward to willing to risk his life to even willing to die for his beliefs and those he cares about is a character growth. It is gradual, and I can understand why some dislike that he gets to stay the unreliable prankster for a good portion (50-65%?) of the story's length.

[collapse]

I think AWE is worth a read, even if only a taste to see the maverick in action. It is worth it to stick it out for the whole ride though, if the usual CN styled ending does not ruin a series for you. <<less

5 stars because I never got bored with this. Very fun to read.

However this isn't without flaws.

What I did not like:

... more>> A concerning amount of animal r*pe and male r*pe (yea author just avoided female r*pes coz it will attract public ire)... yea it is pretty funny but too overused.

Du lingfei's story. Author tries to mystifies her background etc... trying to build an aura of a main female lead. Kinda annoying if you ask me. She was introduced as a normal girl from sect, but she just have to have some mysterious backstory. But then we never got to finish her conclusion. Most harem members are also meh but passable. You can see that author barely knows how to write romance, let alone a harem.

The last few chapters. It would have been better to just end it after finishing up the main villian. But then confusing minor stronger villans appear then becoming so philosophical. Trying to bring in plot/villans from other novels or the shared universe perhaps?

The 2 major villans are also kinda meh. They just want to achieve their goals, even if it means desrruction of everything.

What I like:

MC is a pacifist and lovable. I love most of his repeatative funny catch phrases. He can see through other's point of view. He forgives minor grievances.

Can adapt anywhere but retains his consistent personality. He is afraid of death and is very cowardly. But even he will standup for his family and friends.

There is a repeating formula and some plots, but it was overall nice to read. <<less

The main character lacks discipline and sometimes I wished I could give him a good beating but he also makes me laugh a lot and overall I enjoyed almost every chapter so far. The writing and plot are all very awesome (after all it’s Er Gen; I wouldn’t expect anything less after renegade immortal and ISSTH).

It's not a bad novel, although I came into this specific one with my expectations set too high. Characters are pretty average, nothing notable about them. The comedy aspect of the novel can be creative or unique, but often (especially in the latter half) comes off as trite. The pacing: pretty standard throughout the whole story but there are a few points where things are very slow or very fast for no particular reason (I mean, you can guess why, but still). The plot itself is mediocre, although certain arcs... more>> and short sections have their charms. There are also innumerable plot holes (some very small and some big), many having to do with the power-system and cultivation in general, but I think that is somewhat inevitable for an WN.

Lastly, I dislike when authors will utilize dimensions, time, time-travel, and other things in those areas. I don't dislike it inherently, but only because I think the only way to really succeed in those areas and create a coherent plot that can still be "unexplainable" or have "mystic" elements in it, but be understandable, is to either have a very, very intricate system with set rules, or to make it modeled around simplicity and purposefully don't delve into the discussion of time. The other option, which most authors opt for, is to make a pseudo-concept and equivocate and simply just let it be. This option almost always results in a paradox in multiple cases and broken logic of the universe / world and simply drops the aspect of realism in the story to a very low level. It perhaps can be done well, but I've yet to see it. Of course, in this story, Er Gen opts for the pseudo-explanation, and that entails what I've mentioned above. <<less

Love Guru Bai Xiaochun makes people laugh so hard that people around you will think you've gone crazy. It is the epitome of a Comedy+cultivation novel. Most of the time CN novels have a weird taste in comedy but Er Gen knows what people want to read, his novels are very well written.

Spoiler

Bai Xiaochun's great episodes like Chicken Thief, Plague Devil, his Alchemy and Love Guru are hilarious.

When jumping to the past he could choose a point where he could save everyone from death and his love from misery, but without a reason he choose to just defeat the last boss.
