The best MC I've ever seen.

He is completely different from other MCs.

He isn't madly doing cultivation for some sh*t made up reason like long life, dream, revenge, saving others.

All he wants is improve his spear techniques. Cultivation went hand in hand with it.

He has passion for his art and that's why he practices and masters it.

No powerups, no treasures, no past memories; just the passion.

Spoiler

Likable main character, world is epic in scope, cultivation systems are varied and interesting, everything you'd expect given the author

Lord xue-ying is I eat Tomatoes latest work and at the time of writing this review finished a day or two ago, I'm going to write this with the assumption that most people looking at this book are familiar with his other novels as they are fairly prolific thanks to ren & he-man

Like most of tomatoes works I really enjoyed this, he has in my opinion continually improved his technical skills and in this iteration a lot of the minor things that bothered me in desolate era or swallowed star, (like story arcs dragging on way too far or female characters seemingly enamored with the MC until the end of time just to show his love for his wife, or continuous sudden power ups "breaking through between life and death" constantly) were either extremely minimal or not present at all in this book while simultaneously I thought that he managed to put in more scenes that were genuinely emotionally evocative and very deftly moved the story along

As for the story itself (relative to his other works) I thought the main character was interesting, he took a different path than I thought he would at the beginning, I was sad there weren't any standout side characters like the great bebe and that tomato still hasn't really managed to use the main heroine very well throughout the story but overall i'd say regardless of technical differences the story itself is at least as good as desolate era though maybe not quite as memorable as stellar or coiling dragon (though thats probably entirely bias since they were my first and second chinese ln's) overall it's a very enjoyable read and only seemed to drag a bit in one or two parts

I don't usually write reviews for novels but I wanted to write one for this novel. Novel is a classical IET novel but it is written in a better way. Side characters don't fade away suddenly like other series. Well, in some point they do fade away but it is still better than his other novels. The MC gets stronger way too quick, much quicker than CD. There are many time-skips. It is still a little weak at Romance as always and there is no Harem like IET's other novels.... more>> If you like IET's style, this is one of his best novel and you will like it too. The style of the novel is closer to CD with Chinese character names instead of western ones. The only defect is that translation speed is not as fast as CD. So you should be waiting until it has more chapters before starting reading if you want fast realeases. Or make donations to the translation group. <<less

A fairly typical IET cultivation story, initially with Knights & Mages. Following the titular character "Xue Ying", on his quest to save "x" by becoming stronger. We have intense training in spear arts, death seeking adventures and the usual arrogant Cultivators looking for a face slap. But what took me aback is the shear speed of progression, as it feels like the MC is near the peak less than 100 chapters in. But alas the journey of cultivation is never ending. Going from Mortal, to Transcendent, to Deity and beyond;... more>> with an engaging overarching plot at each realm.

The best aspect about the story being that it never feels bogged down for too long. Sure that does mean that the story is lacking in plot twists and major setbacks for Xue Ying; nevertheless better that than slogging through an endless bloody war campaign, like in many similar web novels. Towards the end, things like measurements of "distance" & "time", lose all meaning and all that matters is the "Dao". <<less

I’ll be honest, this novel is pretty bad. It’s also pretty fast-paced, so don’t expect any world-building or character development from the author. Just don’t expect the author to go in-depth.

World Building: Nonexistent

Character Development: It’s pretty dull. The side characters and villains are forgettable. The MC wants something, he gets it. He also doesn’t suffer at all. There’s almost no tension, even when the MC got poisoned. The characters just don’t have enough depth to them for anyone reading to care about them. Even when the close ones of the... more>> MC died, it felt like nothing because not much is known about them except that they were close ones of the MC.

Power System: We’re introduced to your generic cultivation power system. There’s not much explained on how to break through the next realm, or even details on why that realm is different. The author doesn’t set a clear foundation of the power system and just makes it all up as he writes. The author sometimes randomly introduces a new power that was never explained and just says, “oh yeah, I didn’t mention, but the MC has this power and this is why he got stronger”. You get what I mean.

Plot: Loved one gets taken away or is threatened —> MC must get stronger —> time skip of MC’s training to get stronger —> goes out to test his powers —> strong enough? If not, fight battles and become stronger through that --> gets rid of the threat. Just rinse and repeat this and that’s the plot.

Writing Quality: It’s pretty tr*sh. Almost no description of anything. We don’t know what anything looks like. For example, the MC enters a room, but the author doesn’t describe how big or small the room is and what’s in the room. You get what I mean. So we just get a dull and pretty meaningless world to look at. It makes reading the novel a chore because it’s not fun to read. There’s not much to imagine when reading the novel. It’s even worse when the MC is battling someone because the author just puts sound effects. For example, the author loves using the sound effect of “hong hong hong” a lot when the MC is using his spear, which makes absolutely no sense why the spear would even make that type of sound. It just breaks the immersion because it sounds so silly. And there’s a lot of show, don’t tell.

I wouldn’t recommend this novel to any veteran reader, but for starters, it would be fine.
Barely an edible read, overall rating of 6/10. <<less

lots of people enjoy this story & author so I'm not being judgemental or condescending. I really just don't enjoy the authors style, like creating a female love interest for the MC, only for her to lose interest and try and hook up with dude from rival clan, it isn't a huge part of the story, but it shows the authors writing style. <<less

Average, no way near as good as CD, DE or even ST. Decent enough read to help pass the time when bored I guess.
Translation quality isn't too bad, just the usual typos and grammatical errors with gender and names.

MC is a bit of a sap but hard working but after receiving his Ultimate Arts from Master drops in IQ immensely despite being a supposed genius. Makes ridiculously s*upid decisions by overestimating himself. Yes, his combat level can mean he can take down higher levelled opponents but forgets about the... more>> difference in Laws and ends up nearly dying repeatedly resulting in plot armour saves that coincidental power him up further which in turn makes him even dumber. This is actually after he's supposedly had multiple epiphanies regarding his low realm and it's limitations blah.

Spoiler

He hears that his father in law is in dire straits in a danger zone trapped by 3 Powerful Existences 2 of which are at Paragon level and two others who are peak rank 4 world deities who'd been his team mates but now turned on him because of loot. Decides to go rescue him with his recently ranked up to 4 wife and himself when he's still just a rank 3 but with rank 4 strength. Yeah just the two of them. Despite knowing the dangers of the region as well as the number and strengths of the enemies. Crazy and nonsensical decision. Danger Zone is known to have even endanger his Teacher who's one of the peak existences in the universe FFS!

[collapse]
Spoiler

And then literally minutes after returning safely to his Teacher he makes yet another ridiculously s*upid decision to go the Abyss to rescue the guy from tens of thousands of years ago. Doesn't spend time trying to level up a bit more because you know the region itself wants to kill him because he's an Outsider, nope, he just launches himself headfirst even though the guy has been tortured for so long and most likely dead but hey hoo...

His Teacher assigns him a new role despite abandoning his previous one like the spoilt little twat he is. He's to manage the Assassin business for an entire prefecture area, which he never once does, he just uses their info network. So off he pops with his Master Assassin robe into the Abyss. And then takes down two demons in the most ridiculous assassinations EVER. I'm no professional killer but considering the hostile environment most people would use stealth and subterfuge before attacking at full force in order to end the fight as quickly as possible and then leave immediately. In and out, job done. That's the sensible approach right?
In his dumb arrogance he actually struts about out in the open through the different levels, announces his arrival and then attacks them head on, after a nice bit of chitchat of course, wouldn't want the target to not have the time to call for help or anything. Which they do, obviously. BOTH times, they did.
The second fight was just beyond idiotic. He takes so long to kill him that he basically ends up exposing himself and his lack of level. As Tavern Master he's supposedly meant to be True God level but In the end of the day he's just rank 3 plus he can't use his deity powers as it'll set off the world will. Basically reveals his severe lack of planning due to his ret*rded arrogance. Could've brought along treasures to trap and seal space etc to make up for the loss of his Mirage abilities. Ends up struggling needlessly, almost allows the target to escape, target reinforcements arrive so only then decides he has to hurry up and kill him with an OP strike. Seriously? Why didn't he use that full strength attack straight away? Why struggle for so long and end up exposing your identity? He knows the true body is elsewhere for crying out loud. You're in the frikkin ABYSS FFS! Most s*upidest assassin EVER. Cue the entire Abyss agros and he has to fight his way out in a desperate dungeon escape. What a surprise. No doubt he'll get some ridiculous level up of his Willpower or body skills. Annoyingly predictable.

[collapse]

Positives? There's no excessively huge breasted jade skin peerlessly beautiful bimbos throwing themselves at the MC queuing to be collected like Pokemon in every town, village and zone he travels to. Obviously IET isn't the usual hormonally challenged sexually frustrated otaku author living out his perversions through his work.

Oh and just ignore the ridiculous scaling of the world. Billions of kilometres wide cities and movement speeds of thousands kilometres per second etc. I usually knock off around three to four zeros off every measurement...

New Update:
Spoiler

I'm speechless. I just read on to the next volume after he loses his parents, brother and uncle to old age because they aren't talented enough to transcend, he freaks out and decides to leave the cosmos to search for treasure to help his wife and kids transcend because she's nearing her limit too because she reincarnated. Yes, that's right, he leaves them alone without any avatars remaining to go search and promises to return before the end of the epoch, approx trillion years time. Bearing in mind she'd have to spend most of it in his Crimson place under slowed time to extend her life whilst waiting for his return.
Imagine finding out your significant other has ten years left to live so you decide to leave the country searching for fairies, magicians and alchemists to cure the terminal disease and promising to return before the end of the world. But it's okay as there's a time slowing chamber they can go live in for x amount years whilst your off chasing fantasies. Yes it's the loony bin time!
I just can't get behind this at all. They're all cultivators, they spend 99% of their time alone in a room cultivating. Even when he had all his avatars there'd be ridiculous lengths of time where his family wouldn't see hide of hair of him or an avatar. It's so hypocritical to leave for a trillion years when she's just got a billion left before death. Plus there's no proof such treasures even exist because otherwise wouldn't everybody and their poodle be transcending otherwise? Wouldn't everywhere be overpopulated with True Gods? Absolute BS plot line. This kind of mentality would definitely negatively affect his Dao heart, inability to let go... Should've found a better reason for him to leave prematurely and alone.

Ah this novel, quite a difficult one.

It can be seen as having 2 main parts, the story on his world, which is the actual good part of the story that is better than anything I have read so far by IET, and the part after he leaves his world, sadly the writing and quality quickly changes into a more generic novel that is somehow even worse than anything else written by IET.

I would recommend to read this for everything during the world arc, and consider dropping or skimming it after... more>> he leaves his world.

I still don't think IET wrote this novel. Maybe it's the translation. The feeling I get from this is that it was written by a child. Everything is so childish: The MC, the gold digging b*tches, the damsel in distress that will inevitably fall in love with the MC...

I've read his Desolate Era. While it's not perfect, it's still a good read with likeable characters. This, this is just boring with lots of mumbo jumbo and a bland and despicable MC. ... more>>

When he became strong he wanted to wipe out his mother's whole clan including countless innocent people just because the clan followed their rules! What's worse, even with his mother's plead, over 5000 people (many of whom were unrelated to his mother's incident) still died to satisfy him and he simply sneered at this. Later he looked down on the transcendence natives who were ens*aved and forced to fight in a life and death battle with him, which makes absolutely no sense and is disgusting as hell.

[collapse]

Overall this novel is a mess. It feels cheap and boring. The levels of mastery are very confusing. Even at c113 I still don't understand all those terms, but I guess that's more of a translation problem.

The only likable thing about this novel is the two uncles. <<less

The novel is not half bad but it has by far the worst main character IET has ever written with a bit*h like attitude sucking up to the powerful and disdaining those beneath him. Willing to lose no face even when he is clearly in the wrong willing for innocents to die than to hurt his pride. The moment he gets some backing he instantly transforms to bit*h Xue Ying.

All in all you if you can stand bit*h like Xue Ying the novel is above average.

I always feel bad when I see this novel.... Because it stopped being translated just as I started reading it. Cursed translator has something against me, I really really like this novel. the author always writes interesting cultivation systems and they are probably what I enjoy most about the story, and although his ability to write romance is nothing amazing it is always simple yet touching, and so it still satisfies the bare minimum if you are looking for romance.

Story is far from original although author tried to introduce some new idea about cultivation - "true meaning of this", "true meaning of that". There are some ridiculous true meanings that he came up with, but so far he only mentioned them and I doubt he will ever elaborate more on them. Also, progress related to grasping a true meaning of something is poorly done - it's like it happens by a chance and you can also make a huge mistake when you try to combine some of them. It... more>> seems that author tried to come up with something high level - difficult to grasp, but didn't find the words to back it up so he just writes that it happened. Cultivation path is simply to vague described using some strong words but things simply happen. I have a feeling that things are going to get only worse while MC continues to get stronger but I will check how battles between different "true meanings" are going to be described at higher level. Desolate Era is much better than this novel.

Edit:

I also don't like talk about s*avery - similar thing happened in "Stellar Transformation".

Also I don't like talk about religion - not even sure if this was properly translated since this part is very confusing. <<less

Okeyish story, poorly written.

- First the novel is as tasteless as sand. It was as if a IEEE reasearch paper has been shoved down ur throat.

- Too many contrasts in details. No consistency on the assets the MC owns. The power levels and its worth contradicts from what was claimed only 5 chapters before.

Read for the sake of reading a novel.

This isn't an issue if you never read IET novels, so don't mind it if that's the case.

One thing that I like about this novel is that MC is genuinely a genius, there isn't a bullsh*t secret treasure, there isn't a grandpa, there isn't an amazing bloodline (well, there is a bloodline but it ain't that great). He reach his level by hardwork and talent and that's nice.

The overall structure of the novel is good, but well when you plagiarize your own previous work I imagine that it helps a lot, there is not real "weak part" and no "great part" the novel keep a decent quality from the start to the end. But that also means that you'll never come accros an arc like the alchemic arc in ISSTH or the mortal arc in renegade immortal.

As far as the characters go, they are pretty bland and really easily forgotten (both by you and the novel). MC's wife is just a damsel in distress, she is usefull like twice in the entire novel, for the rest of it she is just a reason for MC to push forward to save her life. MC also have two children who barely matters, he also does his best to save them from death, and manage to do it! A shame that his grand children are completely forgotten, when the original world of MC end to enter in a new era, he save his wife and two childrens, and those two childrens literally NEVER mention to also save their childs, they are just left to die and they don't give a shit. Same for a lot of MC's friends, they just die without MC caring about it. It's fine if they die, but at least adress this issue, don't just ignore it.

They are several plotline in this novel that are simply forgotten, ain't going to developp on that but that shows that IET just wrote this novel as it goes without properly planning it before starting to publish chapters, and that's very noticeable.

Anyway, this is an alright novel, if it's your first IET it could be a great novel. <<less

Lord Xue Ying and Stellar Transformation, are IET'S worst novels. And they both suffer from similar problems.

All of his characters are characters, never feeling human at any point in the story. They could represent a very simple ideal, at most: loyalty, love, feilty, and straightforwardness. If they weren't all hypocrits, idealism could be an excuse for their shallowness and, seemlingy recycled behaviour (and could, by his fans, be blamed on cultivation).

His stories are also recycled. Any of his main characters can be replaced with another and would show similar results... more>> and behaviours, in their new roles.

Sense completing so many novels, IET, still hasn't gotten rid of laughing and smiling in nearly all the sycophantic-like conversations. This is annoying.

And I really, for some reason, find it s*upid that these guys can be loyal, to an undeserved degree, to their love interests. I blame it on the author, for not convincing me.

3.7 out of 5. I'm not reading any more of his stories. <<less

Incredibly lack luster. Worst of the IET series.

The first few volumes are pretty good but the author discards everything unique/interesting about the MC and turns him into generic mary sue cultivation autist savant a couple volumes in.

Also the other reviews are right in that there is no real direction to this series, rather the MC is pushed around by lucky encounters, sudden enemies (e.g. Random guest at a feast attacks MC's wife because he is literally insane -> his fathers a big shot -> an arc of fighting), and needing... more>> to save random acquaintances (arc a = I need to save person a -> stuff -> arc d = I need to save person d).

Also the power system isn't fleshed out all too well, the MC keeps getting random ass power ups (MC finds super sun force -> mc: wow. I am so strong -> MC loses fight -> mc: I need to get stronger -> MC finds super body force -> mc: wow. I am so strong -> repeat). <<less

I give it 4 so I guess it's quite good... especially for this type of series. IET really knows what he is doing. That being said this novel is quite lacking compared to Desolate Era (at least so far). Let me try to do a breakdown.

MC is definitely more likeable than Ji Ning and what's more he ain't an idiot who would do whatever his heart tells him or whatever he decides in the heat of moment. No this MC can keep his cool ... more>>
Spoiler

and even watch his friend get tortured for extended period of time just for the sake of the plan. Other than that, as usual there is a clan that decides that it's good idea to enrage MC despite knowing that Enraging MC never ends well. Usually MC would try his best do to anything against said clan even though at his current level he can fight some better disciples at best, enraging the clan in turn to hunt him down. Here however MC is like, screw that, I will first level up then I will f*ck them over... and that he did... what even better though, unlike most MC who would proceed to do a mindless slaughter of the clan, including the innocent babies and what not, this MC just say, hey guys, I am OP so... yea do your best to make me not exterminate your entire clan. Truly while MCs usually have some right for revenge going too far like Ji Ning did against his BAD CLAN, was truly too much, worse of all in the end he still got sent to some other dimension because he really wanted to be the exterminator.

[collapse]
so yea MC here is much better.

On the other hand though, most other character are simple useless. I am comparing the first portion of the story to the first portion of desolate era so let's see. Remember that at the end of Ji clan saga, there was that epic battle where Ji clan members group up, laid out massive arrays and fought against massive army. True it was still MC carrying at that time BUT, I would say that for support cast the Ji clan was quite good. Here however MC is pretty much doing the entire work by himself... I will also mention that none of the opening battles or storylines are even close to what we seen in Desolate Era. Desolate Era, Three Realm saga was definitely the best part of the entire story here however the equivalent is simply tr*sh in comparison. Even comparing the entire equivalent to just the Ji Clan saga, this book's storyline is too simple and way less epic. Compared to the final war of Three Realms it's really tr*sh.

Despite what I say it's still good overall, usually IET stuff, only there are no highlights and till chapter 376 there is only one good battle. Still given that the opening sequence in HOMELAND is to be concluded very quickly, it seems like IET is planning more for the galactic part of the story to be the main focus... that's at the very least my guess. Regardless for those who like IET stories they will end up liking this one even if so far it's not up to the standard. <<less

Very close to a perfect novel. Great for both a casual read or for a more serious one. Enjoyable characters and character interactions. Little to no fluff or filler. Everything so far feels necessary and doesn't consume your time or take away your enjoyment. Also one of the better cultivation systems I've come across among all those in the genre. Like a 9/10 for me. As of chapter 370.

I really like Coiling Dragon and Stellar Transformation, Nine Cauldron and Desolate Era is also quite interesting.

However, As I Eat Tomatoes fan, this novel is a huge disappointment to me. Lord Xue Ying have a good start and to be honest I really like the story as how hard he cultivate, but the more I read it, it got pretty boring, and even when I read on MTL until volume 22 all he does is just cultivate, kill enemy, cultivate, kill enemy without any real reason unlike when he trying... more>> to save his parents and wife. Well I know things like this is a normal wuxia story, however if all the MC do is just that, i'd rather re-read CD and ST than waste my time reading boring work like XY.

And lastly, Love Interest, in LXY there is no real explanation as how the MC and heroine got closer, all it have just a short summary. I don't know why but looks like IET really like putting "Alice" -like character in all of his works. <<less
