The Death Mage Who Doesn’t Want a Fourth Time

Amamiya Hiroto is unlucky. His life consisted of misfortune after misfortune, culminating in an unlucky death during an incident on a school boat trip, trying to save a girl he barely knew. After death, he met a god of reincarnation who requested that the hundred or so dead passengers—one of them being the girl he tried in vain to save—be reincarnated into another world.

Yet a series of unfortunate events forced Hiroto to reincarnate with even less luck than before, starting with nothing but a tremendous amount of Mana. His second life, far worse than his first, came to a cruel end.

However, upon meeting the god a second time, he was informed that there would be yet another reincarnation—one that had already been set in motion and could not be stopped. Not wanting Hiroto to live long, the god cursed him before he was reborn in the hopes that he would either die quickly or commit su*cide.

Hiroto was reborn once more as a half-Vampire, half-Dark Elf. A Dhampir. Not wanting a fourth life, he is determined to live this third life with the only things remaining from his previous lives—death-attribute magic and his enormous Mana pool.

The concept is fine, but the execution is lacking.

The basic issue is that there's a lot that just doesn't make sense. I'm not talking about suspension of disbelief, but internal consistency. The god in charge of reincarnation messes up because two people have similar names? Okay... and then instead of fixing it he further curses the unlucky one and doesn't bother erasing the guy's memories (which is the norm for reincarnation in the first place) ? Okay...

And this is normal for the novel. MC lacks basic common sense because of... more>> how his past two lives went, okay, but he possesses specific knowledge of how to make various kinds of food that he never got the chance to actually eat. Undead including skeletons have hunger and eat regular food (and love japanese food for some reason). Death Magic is poorly-explained despite being the basis of the story (why is golem creation included? shrug).

The MC's personality is probably the worst part. He's a major hypocrite and anything that seems to upset him you will definitely see him do casually himself. When he's not getting outraged, he's basically a deus ex machina that will solve any problem the people in front of him have because Death Magic can do everything. There are places where he makes preparations "just in case" which always come in handy.

In the end, this is a novel that requires turning off your brain to enjoy. There are a lot of good ideas but they just don't work together, and there are leaps in logic that will cause your Mental Corruption skill to increase if you try to understand them. <<less

Wow, where should I start?

I guess I will start with why I gave it the two stars that I did...

Firstly the start of the story is 10/10 and really had my attention. Id say the first 6 chapters or so were pretty decent.

Shortly after that I was starting to feel like I was tricked into reading this by the Author and some of the reviews.

If you don't mind the spoilers, here's why I really started to hate it:

Spoiler

The MC tried to save a girl and died trying to save her. She still died though and all 101 people that died in this incident were brought before god and he gave them all skills and a new life on another world. The destiny and skills meant for the MC were given to some guy with a similar name to his own. Then when he was the last one there and asked god "What about me?" God pretty much just said "Oops, I made a boo boo so you are going to be sent to another world full of hardships. Good luck".

The MC is reborn to shitty parents that sold him for a little cash to researchers. Those researchers experimented on him and tortured him for many years until one day the girl he saved in his previous life and the guy that got his powers ended up killing him. The two had apparently become a couple in this second life and gave our MC a swift cuck death.

He is brought to god yet again and he is full of anger saying he's going to get revenge on god and the other 100. Which if you ask me... they deserve it. So god basically says "Ha, f*ckin' try it brat." and then proceeds to put curses on him so he can't be a threat later to the hero's that will be reincarnated a little later in his next life. Needless to say god god is a huge dick.

After being reborn his third time he is born as a race that is hated by all making life hard on him and his mother so much that they have to hide in order to just survive. His mother is the only person that has ever showed the MC love and seems to really care for him even to the point of risking her life for him. She ends up getting tortured, r*ped, and burned at the stake till she died by the village close by. He finds out about this and vows to have his revenge on them as well. Up till this point the story is nothing short of fantastic to me.

Shortly after he starts to try and get stronger and you know what he basically says? "I should kill only bandits that nobody will miss so when the heroes come they don't hurt or kill me for being a bad person." I overlook this and kept reading hoping that I just misunderstood. It almost sounded like he didn't want to take revenge anymore and he was scared of the future heroes? Nah, that can't be it. Well not long later he finally gets his "revenge" for his mom. He doesn't torture or kill anyone. He simply turns the walls, houses, and some farming area into golems and has them walk off leaving the people to have to rebuild their lives. Can this be called revenge after what they did? The MC was treated so terribly in the past and it made me feel for him and feel angry for him as well. Now I am starting to think "Maybe the MC has such a sh*t beta personality that people just naturally walk on him?" Haha you sure showed those villagers! I'm sure they regret what they did now!... Oh... wait... they don't even know why this happened to them. It's been around a year since they burned the elf and the MC didn't even tell them the cause of their current misfortune. I know that if I plotted revenge id want the people to know why they are being punished.

So this is where I stopped reading. Maybe I was premature in stopping? But id like to assume I could see where this story was going. The MC was a "Good little boy" that vowed revenge and decided to later instead just turn the other cheek. I don't enjoy reading about spineless MC's. Apparently I made the right decision because I just read somewhere that he later wants to become a nobleman and builds a harem instead of getting good revenge.

Translations are top notch though. Much love to the translators. <<less

I tried but I just cannot get into this novel. Reason being that the protag stays a child for waaaaaaaaaaay to long. I simply cannot stand novels where the protag is still an infant for several dosens of chapters and then stays a child for hundreds more. There is nothing more offputting that ret*rdedly overpowered infants that can deal with any situation because that just means there won't be any tension what so ever once they actually grow up. And lets not even get started on a 5 year old... more>> with a massive harem.

A shame because the characters and worldbuilding is pretty good otherwise. <<less

I gotta say initially all the comments about how this was a poorly handled revenge plot were kinda pushing me away but I'm glad I decided to give it a shot regardless
the people unsatisfied about the revenge plot are just people who wanna read a story about an edgelord burning the world without giving a sh*t about anything just cuz he's had a shitty life. But this story is much more than just a s*upid revenge story with an edgy protag, the characters are more than simply one-dimensional mean... more>> evil people or completely pure good people, the world-building is amazing and even the side stories are super interesting. Ignore the reviews jumping on the "poorly written revenge" bandwagon and just give it a shot yourself.
Spoiler

also technically speaking its kinda reasonable for him to not become a pure edgelord just going after the bad guys, cus firstly his mother is still alive and a source of both reason and hope to him as a ghost so he doesn't need immediate revenge, he can build up his strength and get his revenge, which he eventually does and boy it is extremely satisfying

Read until latest translated chap and really great read and little dissapointed in some reviews. Just some of them feels like Trolling. To be honest those guys just don't have necessary patiens to be good reader and no insight to actually write reviews. True, story is bit dragged and many seemingly unnecessary chaps but it actually has many essential informations that is necessary for later chapters. And has complex politic and religious plots. Some guys just can't catch necessary informations from side stories and skips chap and as result they don't understand later stories so they'll skip chaps again. It's such vicious circle. And protagonist is not your ideal Seigi no mikata or Maou. In my opinion he is much more realistic than any novel
Spoiler

protagonists i've read.

Story is not about all out war but more like Cold War or religous conflicts.
Protagonist is not goody two shoes those guys make him out to be. Just gone insane so trying to keep tiny bit of humanity that has left in him. He is just not revenge maniac those guys want him to be. If he was then in later stages of story those mindless massacres will backfire on him so I think it was right choise.
There is some illogical relationship developments so it really leaves some stain in story. But those illogical developments can be explained as effect of his charm type skill so it's alright.
If you are looking for blood boiling fights or mind blowing magics then sorry this story is not for you.
<<<<<<WARNING>>>>>>

This novel contains some extreme situations and circumstances. If your fragile heart is broken just by r*pe or two then avoid this novel at all cost.

[collapse]

impression of novel as whole: This novel is most cruel novel I have ever read.

This novel will give you vague idea what will happen in general first. For example protagonist's grudge against advanturers as well as nation itself will be shown from beginning and it is obvious he will get revenge. But process will go to direction you have not imagined. And you already know what was going on behind the scenes but protagonist will not. You will be anxious like idiot for while watching protagonist do things his own pace. He will never change. Most pressing matter will be food ingredient instead of goddamn war between nations. And protagonist already have solution for most matters so in the end you will feel like made fool out of yourself.

Most cricual informations are open for readers and you will know what will happen for few chapters in general. In other word you already saw main-dish. So you will want to skip appetizers and go directly for main dish, but you can't. Because there might be some important details in those seemingly meaningless appetizers. So it will torment you. This is most cruel part. You already saw main dish but if you skip those details you won't be able to taste next dinner.

And protagonist is insane but more humane than most of us. Maybe he is more humane because he is insane.

At first I thought he will get his revenge from town like madman and town will be crawling with undead, but this did not happen. For some reader it will be dissapointing, but this novel is not for those kind of people to begin with. If you want blood-thirsty madman then we have them enough. Those guys have been trend for years. If you think carefully then getting revenge on little town despite knowing risk is just don't worth it. Protagonist was never rational but he is not embodiment of foolishness that some readers want him to be. And protagonist never lies to himself. He never make excuses while doing things for his own self-satisfaction. If he is doing things out of selfish desire then he admits it. Not like some self-rightous fools. He doesn't talk non-sense like atoning sins or forgiving good people. If he has done wrong he admints it. If he know what he have done brought harm to people then he won't make excuse. He knows talking about atoning sin or what not will not change a thing. He knows being good person doesn't mean what you are doing is right thing. And he knows more than anyone else concept of good and bad is just problem of prespective.

That is why this novel is cruel. This novel changer how you look at world and makes you realize you wasn't really person you thought yourself to be.

Interesting novel, and is pretty good. It got a very long chapters too.

Don't read if you want one-sided relentless slaughter. You will be disappointed.

Notes to remember if you're going to read the novel:

Spoiler
    • The MC desires "happiness" not "revenge". You will later know why.
    • People (and villains) are fanatics (and some lunatics) who follow their god.
    • " Justice" is biased, not universal. (Related to the second note)
    • Gods are not omnipotent and omniscient, and are like game devs on a realistic game.
    • He (MC) is insane (yes, but he's stable but still insane)
    • He is OP, but not really.

A novel which starts out quite dark due to tragedies (Be prepared, the first few chapters are full of tragedies). The MC suffers a lot, loses his loved ones, and becomes bent on revenge. We all wanted him to get the revenge as well. Then he soon becomes quite OP kid, but the problems start then.

The main people who MC would want revenge on would be Hiroto (The braver guy) and Heinz (and some gods) , but author is trying very hard to make these guys look... more>> good and trying to get readers to like them more, which is quite irritating. As it is now, I won't be surprised if MC ends up forgiving them. I had great anticipation for this novel which had a dark theme, but now its becoming just like Arifureta (You all should know how much of a failure it was right? Started out real dark, and author just ruined it all and made him forgive them). Well that's the main reason why I disliked this. First making us hate them, and now making us like them. (This review is biased because I was in a bad mood after reading the novel)

Other than this, the story is quite good, the world building has been done good, and a lot of stuff has been explained properly. Characters have been developed well. And the storyline is decent as well. A majority of the readers like this novel a lot due to this, and its quite good to read (Except for people like me who got pissed off due to author making those enemies look good). So overall I'd say this is quite a good read, but be prepared to get disappointed a lot.

I'm giving it a rating of 3 because I had liked it at first, but I've now permanently dropped this. (I've dropped this 3-4 times only to come back to reading it because I had nothing else to read, but in the end I end up dropping it again).

Spoiler

My rating will increase if Hiroto (not the MC, the other guy), Heinz, Alda and Rodcore get their souls destroyed by MC
Nearly forgot, but MC seems to have a muscle fetish

THIS IS JUST BOOTYFUL. This novel is just, damn man, so good. The chapters are REALLY LONG too, which is really nice obviously.

Our M/C has been reborn twice, and he has suffered accidentally from some foolish God. In his first life on Earth, the whole class dies on a boat from a terrorist attack and he dies trying to save a girl, she dies as well obviously.

They meet the God Rodcarte and he tells them all they have two choices - You can be reborn on Earth but you will... more>> have your memories wiped OR you can be reborn on a new planet, obtain special abilities to improve that planet, and keep your memories. The God is only giving people powers, because he has to improve the world and our God Rodcarte heard this is a good way to do it from the other Gods from other worlds.

Out of the 102 people there, only 1 person refuses to be reborn on a new planet with powers, the rest choose the second option. The God calls them up, one by one to grant them new destines, he gives them powers and sends them on their way.

UNFORTUNATELY, there is a guy in the group WITH THE SAME DAMN NAME as our M/C, just a one letter spelling different, and this dumb God gives our M/C's powers/destiny to this scrub, so our M/C unfortunately gets NOTHING. From the very start of his new life, he is f*cked lol. The only thing the God gave him is a HUGE AMOUNT OF MANA (he has 10 million mana, and 10k mana is usually a first class mage lol), but the God tells him he cannot practice magic at all, so our M/C flips out on the God as well.

So, in his second life on the planet called Origin, his dad was a drunk, mom a hoe, so they sell him for alcohol. He ends up in a lab, was experimented on and turned into an Undead. He actually acquired death magic there (fire, water, air, earth, light, life and spirit magic are the known 7 elements of magic so this death magic is rare and new)

Unfortunately, he ended up dying to 30 of his previous OP AF classmates who had no idea that our M/C was reborn as well with them. They were all dispatched to get rid of some threat and that was our M/C unfortunately.

So, our M/C meets the God a THIRD time and tells him "I WILL KILL THEM ALL, " referring to the people that just killed him unknowingly. It's really a huge misunderstanding and he knows this as well, but he is still upset, mostly at the God.

After dying twice and preparing for his third life, the God Rodcarte doesn't want him to suffer, so he curses him, hoping he will die quickly. Our M/C is reborn on the planet Lambaerde, as a half vampire/half dark elf aka Damphir. He is immune to the sun unlike vampires, and possesses very few weaknesses. His mom is Darcia, a brown skinned (dark elf) and his father is Valen, a pale subordinate vampire (low ranking vampire, once a human).

About this world and its background - We have Vida, the goddess of life and love. Alda, the god of light and law.

Zantark, the war-god of fire and destruction. Peria, the goddess of water and knowledge.

Shizarion, the god of wind and art. Botin, mother of the earth and goddess of craftsmanship.

Ricklent, the genie of time and magic. Zuruwarn, the god of space and creation.

These eight gods of the elements as well as the dragon-emperor god Marduke, the giant god Zeno and the beast-god Ganpaplio were known as the eleven founding gods.

The eight gods of the elements created humans, modeled after themselves, and began to teaching and guiding them as their followers.

The dragon-emperor god Marduke created dragons, and the giant god Zeno created giants as their followers.

To provide food for them, the beast-god Ganpaplio birthed countless birds and wild animals and released fish into the seas.

The war-god Zantark and the goddess Botin gave birth to the Dwarf race, while the goddess Peria and Shizarion gave birth to the Elves. “People*” became a general term that applied to all sentient races, and the creatures that had been known as people up until that point came to be known as humans*

The world was peaceful until a Demon King was born, which created Orcs, Goblins.. Etc. The Demon King used them, as well as other evil Gods to fight against other Gods. The God of space and time summoned 7 heroes to defeat the Demon King. The battle pretty much destroyed the planet, barely anyone, Gods included, were left alive.

Alda, one of the two gods who still had power left, chose to work with the 3 surviving heroes to guide the surviving people. However, the goddess Vida believed that creating new races of people and having them join the other races would be a faster way to restore Lambda.

The Goddess Vida mated with the Sun Giant Talos, giving birth to the Titans. She mated with a dragon Tiamet, giving birth to the drakonids - humans with the power/horns of a dragon.

She gave birth to a variety of beast-men, as well as sleeping with the sea-god, birthing mermaids/mermen. Mated with an elf to birth the dark elves. She lastly gave birth to lamia, scylla, arachne, centaurs, harpies and she even infused power into one of the fallen heroes called Zakkart, turning him into an Undead and birthing the vampires.

Alda the God did not like this, so he battled Vida, causing her to suffer a great blow, falling from her position as a God and fleeing into the world with Zakkart. This was 100, 000 years ago, but the world today is still pretty chaotic.

You have people that follow Alda, the new God of life, light and law, and some still follow the evil Gods secretly. Our M/C is on a continent where beings like ghouls/vampires are hated by most people/church. He is trying to make his way to another continent where beings like him are treated better by humans, where all races get along.

Right now, his stats are -

  • Name: Vandalier
  • Race: Dhampir (Dark Elf)
  • Age: 2 years, 6 months old
  • Title:【Ghoul King】
  • Job: None
  • Level: 100

    • Magic Mastery: Level 1
    • Spirit Body (NEW!)
  • Curses
    • Experience gained in previous life not carried over
    • Cannot learn existing jobs
    • Unable to gain experience independently
Most people are like rank 3-5, levels 10-50. Our M/C is still rank 1, level 100, because you cannot rank up unless you have a job, and since one of his curses are - cannot learn existing jobs, he is screwed at the moment.

Of course, the title of this novel is DEATH MAGE, so he obviously will get that job soon enough. The novel is going VERY GOOD right now. From chapter 2, you already get " the feels."

Spoiler

Basically, his mom and him were hiding away in a cave and some church people in a village end up killing her because she is the mother of that damphir. She is burned at the stake and her spirit is left in the world, barely hanging on. Our M/C realizes that something is wrong after his mom doesn't come back for a night and finds her spirit, they have a heart touching moment and he ends up pouring 10million mana into her, allowing her to stay as a spirit. He seals her away into a bone and swears that one day, he will get her a fresh body to put her soul inside, thus resurrecting her. He also meets a father/two daughters along the way that were killed by bandits, so they serve under him, and he promises them the same. He ends up killing AN ENTIRE LEGION of bandits with his undead as well, pretty damn cool.

Right now, he is the Ghoul King. He already cleared a dungeon, and since it was an undead dungeon, he didn't even have to fight, since he has the Death-Attribute Charm, allowing undead to like him better. Also, Ghouls are not spirits, they are living, physical beings, just very pale and they live for about 300 years, but they have low fertility rates. He has solved their birthing issue (sperm/egg low success), allowing them all to get pregnant more.

Also, he has just united the villages and they all went to war with other monsters in an area. They just defeated 600 hundred enemies (four noble orcs - rank 6 with five hundred-ish rank 3-5 Goblins/Orcs/Kobolds without losing any Ghouls in the process.

He rescued the kidnapped women ghouls from the villages, as well as the human adventurers, but since the humans were r*ped, they begged him to kill him. He doesn't want to kill them, so they actually end up turning into Ghouls as well, so everyone lives.

He has the ability to talk to spirits, so he talks to one and learns that her body was stolen. One of the kidnapped/raped human women, is not really alive. She is a "live-dead." Live-dead are alive, but there is no soul. It happens when someone dies, and a few seconds later, they are revived. So, they are still warm, they sleep and eat, but they are technically dead, with no soul. The live-dead is being controlled by a man called Luciano, who is some noble who was carrying out a mission. He was gathering intel on the orcs/goblins, since the Adventurer Guilds wanted to kill the monsters, but he just learned that some child already did it for him.

Our M/C forces him out of her body, and her spirit returns to it, and she becomes a Ghoul. Luciano reports to the higher nobles and tells him everything, so the church is pissed that the half vampire/half dark eld is still alive. They are now sending a huge army out to eradicate the ghouls and the kid since they believe they would be a future threat, if a few can easily defeat hundreds of powerful enemies.

I have came by two types of novels in nu.

1. Novels which have complex world building, characters and premise and thus require you to keep your brain open to enjoy them

2. Novels which are straight away light read and you can enjoy them when you are mentally exhausted to use your brain. You can even turn of your brain and enjoy them

... more>> Now most of Japanese novels as well as Chinese novels are of second type

But the thing I despise most is the novel which deceives you by showing that it will be a complex read to turn out to be brain-dead novel.

And this novel is same type of novel I despise most.I mean author sets up all tragic sh*t two lifetimes of MC, conflict with God, and later even his mother gets killed for rediculous reasons to make MC let go of his hatred in a flash. Author could have made MC lose his hatred accumulated by past as well as present life by showing love and care of person around him, author could have shown a glimmer of hope of good future to MC and have made him work hard to catch it as well as exact vengeance and repentance in ones who have wronged him but no author made MC let go of his hatred by just some words from his mom who was just killed for some ridiculous reasons and later MC either gets surrounded by b*tches who just want his child since he is strong or allies who are too brain-dead to even thing.

Also there is a person amemiya who got powers which were going to be given to MC and is such s*upid person that you can't even laugh. I mean he was given powers to be leader like character but what he does when he got reincarnated, well he enjoys his life and later somewhat becomes concious and makes a organisation 'bravers' and makes details of their abilities public and if you are not fed up with s*upidity then he later kills our MC self rightously and entrusts other victims saved to some organisation thinking that organisation is some saint and they will not reconduct experiments. Now what you will expect to be ending of such character will be tragic but what author do is make MC save him

Like wtf dude.

And seriously is it just me or in real the conversation between characters seem like conversation betwen some children's. And why do all Japanese MC are like super modest and all have inferiority complex. I mean here MC don't even know how powerful he is and what is extent of his powers and also his chracter is one dimensional like he don't even have basic human traits of lieing, trickery, selfieshness, dillemas, heck he can get rid of most potent negative emotion hatred by simple words by his mother.I mean hatred at least requires some time and certain amount of care and not like you invite vengeful MC to a sermon give him a lollipop give a sermon and *baam* you have now a typical kind s*upid Japanese MC. For me Chinese ruthless and edgelord mc's who trick decieve and even massacare whole sects are much better because at least know rules of survival and nature of people around them.

Our MC lives in a world where strong people like gods can literally change anyone's life and thus what you will expect MC to do after this all tragic sh*t will be strive to becone a person who controls his own own life but no, our MC wants to become a Nobel of some country and a kind adventurer so that later people don't kill him. Can you be more ret*rded and s*upid than this, I don't think so because this is ultimate realm of ret*rdness where our typical Jp MC have noodles in his brain.

I just have to say I LOVE this series

A Isekai yes but how can someone expect that the MC is so mess up the first time and get again in a Hardcore world for a third time.

Is a MC with his own way of walk no one control it nor follow a ideal of his past life he just want to be happy

This is the best isekai yet I've ever read. The chapters are so good that even though it has a length like that of a light novel, it still frustrates you for having very good cliffhangers which will make you scream for more. The elaboration of the characters' developments are so profound that I'm wondering how the hell did Densuke came up with this: the monsters' races are based on other countries' folklore and myths (with some I never even heard of) that didn't have the cliche' monster names from... more>> the usual origins of lore. BRAVO DENSUKE. *CLAP* *CLAP* *CLAP*

Yoshi really did a great job translating this one. I've been reading this since the first few chapters of the manga released and am relieved that he still translates with good translation consistency.

I hope many readers will continue to love this webnovel and the translator and not just slap it with bad reviews when there are so many questions left to answer. (Well, maybe those who have given up reading in less than 100chaps are not capable of having good reading comprehension I guess ¯\_ (ツ) _/¯) <<less

awesome novel

a bit similar but better than one of my favourite novels - Tsuki ga michibiku isekai douchuu in terms of personality of MC and world building

chapters are long and satisfying so the current pace of one chapter per week is enough

the prologue makes this seem like revenge novel but its actually more centered around world building so except the prologue there are not too many hate chapters (i dislike chapters filled with hate)

********* UPDATED Mar 30, 2020 *********

This is a shounen Isekai story on how the MC overcomes all odds and obstacles to survive and develop himself (and his kingdom) to become strong and powerful enough to achieve his goals, including protecting the people he loves, resurrecting his mother, and, of course, revenge (even against gods)...

This is one of the best Isekai stories I've ever read, and I rank it at a similar rating to Tensei shi-tara Slime Datta Ken. If you look around at other reviews for this story, you will... more>> find that most people either love it or hate it, with hardly anyone in between. As someone who has already read 217 chapters of this story, plus another 50+ chapters in the raws (because it's so good) I can address most of the complaints that others have expressed.

First and foremost, this is NOT one of those hardcore revenge novel where the MC is hell-bent on rampaging cruel/ruthless/evil vengeance on his betrayers/oppressors. If you are looking for that kind of novels, then this novel is not for you. The MC does carry out his revenge, but not in a mindless bloodshed type of way.

I know that the story starts off sounding like a hardcore revenge story (MC suffers torturous life thanks to shitty and uncaring God's whim, MC swears revenge, MC finally got a chance to turn things around), but this is only to show the background setting of the MC. As such, at the beginning of his real story (ie. his third life), some people got disappointed when he became more mellow and forgiving. They think he is a weakling/loser who is willing to forgive even the cruelest things done to him, but this is simply NOT true. The MC knows his own limits, and wants to make himself stronger first before carrying out his revenge. (And he will.) Rather than going on a mindless rampage, his nature is to think and strategize before acting. Also, he is not so selfish that revenge is the only thing he thinks about. He also cares deeply for the people around him, and will tend to their needs before facing his enemies. Moreover, he prefers to act in large groups rather than solo.

Because of the MC's caring nature for his comrades, he unwittingly gathered a large number of followers, mostly female, and hence the 'harem' tag. However, his harem (which includes all kinds of monsters and undeads) is more of a joke than an actual romance. And since the MC is still very young, he has no attraction to these 'girls'. And the author does not elaborate much on the romantic feelings from these 'girls' either. So if you are looking for a cute harem rom-com, you will be disappointed.

The only other possible issue that I can think of is that the story progress can sometimes be a bit slow. But it is not too slow to be a let down.

If you are fine with the above, then you should definitely have a read on this novel. <<less

So far, this is my second favorite story on this site. Well, I recommend it; I recommend it to anyone who might see this. This is a long running series that is amazingly written, has amazing overarching plot, satisfyingly well done OPMC. This also lacks any trace of "the common lack of tension that happens as a result of a poorly written OPMC.

the translators are doing a good job at a good rate, it's a good story; both short and long term, and it's got an incredibly well thought out... more>> OPMC. I can't recommend this enough, and if I could rate above five stars, I would. <<less

Great story because it is fast-paced, but that means that it will end soon.

Despite the rough start and no 'sects', the story is fairly straightforward.

The author took his time with a crazy amount of worldbuilding and lore.

... more>> He drew a line of who is a friend and foe.

He follows a simple path of local, city, nation then 1/3 world when the main character is becoming stronger.

The plot is not generic. (*Yay*)

The MC's IQ is around 100 when the story starts, it soon becomes 200+ when he gains a 'few' abilities.

Relationships are... isekai generic placeholders with fairly forgettable characters. Though the relationships do not matter as much in the end, as MC is to be a leader of a nation, then a God-Faction, not a party.

Most OP 9-year-old ever. <<less

Real score 2.5/5 Not the worst novel I have read so far that honor goes to either death march, s*ave harem, Legend (but this one is more because it goes like this after 100 chaps it's Helena or**sm time, Helena, Helena, Helena, Helena, Helena...I call it the Chaika effect (I'm so sorry if you get that reference, because you were forced to watch an anime where half of the dialogue consist of Chaikas)... also there's almost a 1, 000 chaps... be real people the LN will be getting axed wayyyyyy... more>> before that) and hachinan (definitely the worst) something.

I'll be frank here; it's shi-I mean crap. As someone who has been writing sh-I mean crap for years and has read crap for years (ex: death march)... all I can say is...I know sht when I see it. You may feel bad for liking something I criticized (but I don't really care for what u feel u-u weak-as- I-I mean u poor thing) and think there's more and... you'd be right. At some point in my life I actually somewhat enjoyed... death march (ok I'm pretty much lying here but I found it somewhat funny... nope there's no redeeming qualities in it but for the sake of what I'm about to say next let's say I did). There's a time for everything in someone's life but that doesn't mean that you nor I have/had no taste (but seriously after 100 chaps of this sh*t and the story is this incompetent... just... idk).

The story has it's good parts and the reason we may enjoy some stories at different points in time usually comes from novelty or the fact that we tend to focus on only the good; and ignore the amount of tr*sh in the background. Nonetheless, at some point you gotta take out or the sh** pile or it will start to crumble on top of you? (idk where I was going with this analogy, or why... see still writing sh**... don't be a writer kids, choose accounting... it's safe. life 101)

There's some good to come out of this... seriously. It is dark, edgy, pure wish fulfillment. I mean, the main character looks so good that people think he is a girl (ooh), has white hair (haaa), heterochromia, with an eye being red (I can't take this much stimulation; my narutard side its, its comin... oooooh) and is a chick magnet (pretty sure preteen me would have died from all of this). It was pretty much my teenage fantasy although I wanted to be a Dante kinda as*hole but each its own. (though now he looks like a hobo, from edgy teen to whatever the fk the dMC reboot tried to do, to a hobo...I'm starting that he never was a good role model)

The story is "creative" (ok this a biiiiiiiig overstatement, but hey I'm trying to be nice here... before the real beating starts... gona tear this series a new hole and its fans.... gotta be gentle... and when I'm done can't wait and see all the the bu*thurt fans), and the premise itself is "interesting" (*wink *wink).

But really all in all it is not so bad the world itself seems to be fleshed out to some degrees; glad there are actually different races, rather than your traditional elf and dwarf (although they are still there), but more obscure races... even though some of these races are NOT really what they claim to be HMM!!! (I'm looking at you ghoul race...I buy more the ghouls from tokyo ghoul being ghouls than whatever the fck ghouls in this series are), too bad it's all nonsense and seems to become irrelevant with each superior evolution in some cases (not even digimon ditches the weaknesses of all their monsters with each evolution... IDK I don't watch Digimon its d*mn too long I was only interested in that sweet, sweet digirap OOOhhh... but its better than pokemon, fight me).

The story has some redeeming qualities being a gritty revenge story and not your average isekai; where the protagonist doesn't give 2 cents about their previous life and are stuck in this bizarre otherworld try to f everything via the authors pent up desires (moving to a different country is already pretty hard, imagine moving to an entire other dimension).?

Spoiler

Ok... are the butthurt fans gone?... ok ranting time. Damn is this sh*t s*upid! We have someone picking a fight against gods and still has the time to f*cking do some cooking, is this f-ing precure?!! Those gods are after your a*s and send enemies to get rid of you every other week and what does the guy do? Oh! I know, they'll cook some sushi or whatever japanese dish the author wanted to eat that day! Just who in all the 9 circles of hell picks up a book like this and then asks to read about poorly explained food recipes?!! But seriously here are the 3 options.

A. Try to create an elite force of monsters to be your meat shield.

B. Get stronger at a faster pace so that way you can take care of them, and focus on building a stronger nation with all your spare time.

Or C. half-a*s doing the 2 of the above and try to help in random weirdos in some weird random misadventures in hopes some of the people that are coming to kill you will hesitate to kill if you become a noble (what?? since when being rich and powerful has ever stopped anyone to try to take anyone out)... when the gods they serve are promising to give them anything they desire if they can get rid of you. Arrgh, this is so s*upid, this Twilight levels of bad fiction!!!

1 word, priorities... biaatch. Da*n it, is this really the same guy that crawled away as a baby to survive and killed people for revenge and was almost ready to unleash hell in a town for the sake of revenge.?

Also, there are way, waaaaay too many characters trying to fight for relevancy in this da#n book!! Are there any, anyyyy major differences between Vigaro and Borkus? Can anyone truly tell them apart from just reading their lines? Probably can't, cuz they are the freaking same guy. Besides the later being a more completed and relevant character than the former. No wonder why they get along so well they are literally the same guy!!

Is there any real reason why there's a godda*n harem if nothing is mainly explored or the MC doesn't seem give a damn about who joins in?!!! People, that have committed atrocities are allowed in, people that he met a second prior are allowed in; in the future people that have 6 giant di*ks and have more tent**les cthulhu and probably like to mol*st babies will also probably be allowed in (even H*tlr would probably be allowed in... if he wore a skirt). No one seems to care there's no interaction besides: "oh I want a baby" or "look at me"some other nonsense. They are like those weird fan girls Gary Oak had in the beginning of Pokemon; and there's a reason why they got left out.. cuz its just freaking s*upid. They all have basic characterization at best and or one trait at worst. At this point in time they just join because every story arc we have 1 0r 2 more baby gold-diggers that want to f a child.

And Oh boy why don't we talk about the giant sleeping elephant/goddess in the room; let's talk about Vida. To be fair Vida isn't a real character at least not yet, but she sure is a fat B sleeping on her a*s that is used as plot device all the time and painted as this force for good. When in fact she is perhaps the worst thing in the entire series. I could go on and talk how Vida is the biggest monster in this goddamn series (creating monsters that are incompatible with the denizens of this world, using the broken soul of the Demon Lord and her f-ing vassals to create a new weapon, ultimately dooming half of the continent when they can always f-off to another world, mating with demon gods that probably killed the other gods/monsters and million of inhabitants) but no... NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!.. enough of this nonsense there are far greater problems that I haven't mentioned.... cuz I don't care.

Other facts include how the MC has close to no personality and seems to lose more personality as time goes on, losing that spark (all that ambition is pretty much gone). Now replaced by cooking and f-ing gag about muscles. And his weird relationship with his cartoonlly evil uncle; that made his tragic backstory into comedy gold.

Also, tired to hear the overly convoluted exposition dump to justify why Rodcorde is so s*upid and incompetent, or why Alda is pretty much the good guy and the story still portrays him as somewhat of a villain (The guy wants to take back the parts of the continents that were originally peaceful and not infested with monsters, wants to get rid of monsters that are pretty much designed to cause the extinction of mankind in different ways, and get rid of a possible future demon lord timebomb), or at least a stuck-up fool. (to be fair the guy is a twat and a sneaky a-hole.. hard to root for dat; he is also like 1 of those nerds u just want to beat up for almost no reason)

The story doesn't portray the MC as the good guy but it is hard to refute that when he acts as Vida's proxy, and every other guy in the Alda's camp is either a drone, maniac or shady a-hole or the 3 at the same time (looking at u high priest Gordon).

I could go on and on and on... but I'm tired there's only so much bullsh** a person can tolerate... not only that but the story is always defeating some evil a-hole and then try to give some half-as*ed back-story each time... at this point they are all the same guys. (I don't care about him fighting a rapist for 68th time or helping a damn Orc or goblin find some chicks. Conflicts should be grandiose about clashing morals or grandeur but noooo... those damn rapists and babies-eating written villains ain't gona write themselves)

Also they just keep repeating the same things every chapters to explain all the a*spuls sometimes they repeat the same explanation from a chapter or 2 prior. Magic is poorly defined and the author tries so hard to justify his own incompetence. Listen with magic there's only 2 ways to go about it, either go a la to aru magical index and explain everything or just don't.. don't explain sh*t.

[collapse]

As I have been saying there's far more but I don't care... don't waste your time reading this tr*sh. It is not going to get better, if you think so.. then you my friend are delusional. The writer is pretty much a hack. A hack with a tiny bit of talent that got lucky and doesn't know where to go with his plotlines (that's why there's so many r*pists, each rapists is trying r*pe us, the audience of our time). They just don't go anywhere and then are conveniently brought back whenever needed. An example of this done right would be One Piece, even though there's no real reason narratively for Luffy to fight Doflamingo and Enel 2 guys that barely had anything to do with his goal on a personal level; he still had to face them when the opportunity because he wasn't willing to go beyond his limits and fight guys stronger than himself... he knew he could never become pirate king. This is why the arc connect to each other so well there's a narrative reason for most of it. (but that's mainly because they are in a ship traveling). However, here unresolved plot points are brought back then discarded then brought back, then brought back again then resolved or discarded with another brought back plot point... it's a mess.

If you have to follow the story for realz then just try to read the LN if it actually gets translated in the future (I wouldn't count on that, but even Death March got translated and has atrocious anime with slightly better CG than Berserk 2016 but not Berserk 2017). At least until then a real writer can perhaps co-write this into an understandable mess.

PS: as a westerner the entire premise of this novel is a bit dodgey. White guy being the savior of mostly dark-skinned people... oooh... hey its Japan. <<less

If “Death Mage” were a mountain road, any attempt to navigate it will send you flying headlong to an awesome, albeit fiery, death. The author drops bombshell revelations as though he were waging a blitz on the reader.

That’s not to say it doesn’t slow down. Of course it does. His revenge will periodically take a backseat to living life and enjoying the things he had never experienced before. The sad part about these lulls is that they can drive off new readers who aren’t accustomed to the writing style yet:... more>> that the story will escalate right when you don’t see it coming.

One thing that bugs me regarding this is that you can tell which reviewers quit reading too soon by their complaints. The protagonist became too compassionate? That he lost his drive for revenge? Aw Hell...

Spoiler

Did you miss the parts where:

He makes the eyes of an enemy explode so hard in their sockets that it fractures his skull and pulverizes his frontal lobe?

He dislocates all his joints to sew himself inside a living, breathing human being?

He drives people to tear off their own skin and faces?!

He regularly tears the souls out of people, writhing in agony and screaming in terror, as he consigns them to the void?

Just to name a few things out of which you might have cheated yourself by leaving early.

[collapse]

Another common complaint is that Vandelieu is overpowered. That’s an understatement. Except, he absolutely /needs/ to be. And no matter how convenient or all-encompassing his magic seems, it’s not enough to shake off the very real danger in which he engages on a regular basis. He’s overwhelmingly powerful comparing him to other LN protagonists, but definitely not when compared to what he’s up against.

This is one of my absolute favorites or I wouldn’t have so much to say about it. The worldbuilding is rich and vibrant, the cast is develops on its own, and you’ll never put it down again once it hits its stride.

And, above all, Vandelieu himself is flat freaking f***ing awesome.

please allow me to introduce myself, I’m a man of wealth and taste~ <<less

Did you read Overlord before and think "Man, this is awesome, but f*** you, Ainz for being a paranoid trainwreck of a protagonist"? Then this book is for you. As I was reading it, I was thinking that it's everything that Overlord should've been. Just don't expect a venomous revenge story. Protagonist doesn't want it. This is a book about building a country, not about revenge. If you stick around for long enough, you'll understand why so many fans idolize protagonist and call him Van-sama.

Be warned though, after reading this,... more>> you might awaken to necrophilia. At the very least towards the undead. Then again, the undead here are not what you're probably used to, they're a merry bunch that's pretty content with their unlife. <<less

I do find the other reviews unfair,

The start of the story is indeed peculiar and very interesting, quite new in the world of novel from what I've read, but a bit slow. On this I can promise to those who persevere that they won't regret it as it gets a lot better afterwards, maybe not really faster but the novel itself takes a very interesting flow

The MC is not a completely bloody avenger, when he knows he is not strong enough he can part himself from what's happened to... more>> protect those he like, however contrary to what is said in the other coms, he doesn't forget his hate, I can promise you readers that one of the most impressive chapter I've read so far is precisely when he meets one of the killer of his mother, the description of his emotions just overwhelmed me

A true drawback would be the bloody price for the translation (at the same time the chapters are huge so I can understand, but still) <<less

Eternal shota MC.
The power scales are not defined, the MC is always attacked or is taken by surprise even though everything points to the MC being superior.
The fighting is more exposures of techniques that fight to the death, show all the skills before fighting seriously.
Adding the first, the only kind of affection is that of friendship and family, the MC is like the younger brother of the whole harem.
The harem becomes useless and loses relevance in every arc, the author... more>> makes the harem only a collection of all races.
Useless Japanese culture as idols and MS (mahou shoujo) becomes relevant and becomes constant, all the barbarians of that world become fanatical otakus idiots who wave their luminescent stick in choreography.
The harem becomes a group of Idols or MS just like every woman in the MC faction.
Any seriousness that the novel had was lost when the faction of the MC or Japanese appear and in general.
Etc...

-------Old idiot me -------

Most of the bad reviews come from readers who can´t wait for a development or do not read correctly. I planned to do a long review for those who put misplaced opinions without understanding what they are reading, the novel itself explains and justifies the why of each complaint of the previous reviews.

The protagonist is not the typical xianxia MC where he kills whole clans because the boss told him"fool", since he started his third life, the MC expressed in a few words "I want to be happy with the people I love", that is everything, he will not be an anti-hero, hero or demon, he will kill what he needs to kill and what he wants to kill (the "cause" of his misfortune and his allies), so he will not kill an entire city where there can be innocents, good MC.

Those who did the reviews do not go beyond the first 3 chapters, the world where the MC lives is a world where everyone is in conflict, where humans is one of several tens, where different races have different characteristics and life expectancy, each character with a name has a certain importance, here human virtue will not be applied to all other races as in other novels, possibly those did not have their typical "anti-hero", would give them a stroke to see the first "heroines" haha.

In short, the development is good, there is a plot from the beginning, a development and growth of the main character, the MC is not static, you can change your mind (what some people call hipocrita), there is no "Balance Breakers" (reference to AliceSoft/Rance not that HxH), about the harem, better to read, since there is a spoiler.

Strong spoiler about Van and part of the harem, and the interest about Van (at the beginning)

Spoiler

They have never said that they want to have s*x with Van (infant stage), the ghouls are a long-lived race, they put importance on strength, being still an infant, was already able to kill orcs, omitting the ability to "attract" races with affinity to death as the ghouls, the first heroines ask Van to give them a son when he has the capacity, one even gets pregnant to stop his aging and be available for Van, precisely, in this novel weak hearts are not allowed, the heroines have had a life before Van, a good part is not virg*n and even with children, r*ped or are already dead (spirits).
