Pretty much like the main lead at the beginning (riku) and hate the second lead (rook) but eventually shift at the latter half of the series..... more>>
Spoiler

lucky for cellia buryuuser the author forgot her so among the supposed to be harem members of rook she was the only survivors. She was last mentioned on defuroi arc, the strongest combatant among the harem members and the one who captured charllote anyway it wasn't mentioned at the ending what happened to rook, the ending was totally rush. A forgot asty ortoberuk as well

I really love this story. The plot is somewhat unpredictable and there was some interesting things in the settings. It also reveals the characterization of each characters carefully as well as how the story was made as it is. Although you may hate some of the characters in the beginning, you will slowly forgive them in the end or maybe have a little bit sympathy in them. The ending though, is a bit heart-wrenching to bear. Rated-15 probably due to gruesome details of killing (?) and well, it should knew... more>> about this story because of how good it is. <<less

This series is certainly one of my favorite now... The epicness, the characters growth... The surprising events for some characters...

The cruelty of Riku's fate, the drama, the plot twists ! Everything is so good... And obviously a spear girl as MC ! (well halberd actually but close enough) What more could you wish for !

I was just looking for a female MC for a change but a little hidden pearl that made my week-end great !

... more>> This series is a must read. I would definitely force my friends to read.

But I don't to be your friend for you to read this series... Right ? Just do it. <<less

Good story. Story touches upon coming over from another world, and being based off a game. While the story touches on this here and there, it could go completely without and be fine. I wouldn't call the MC evil in this story, only driven by personal hate. Wish there could be more challenge for the MC to build up their character, but she in not without struggle. Ending felt way to rushed and was the biggest let down for me.

*will update review when more chapters are uploaded*

I was annoyed at how s*upid some of the characters were in the first thirty or so chapters. Reading through the events of how they die by the hands of Riku or by some other means gives me a sense of gratification like finally scratching an itch on your back that you can't reach before.

Interesting story, fairly unique, with some good character development. I cannot give this more than 3-stars though for two major reasons. 1) As other's have mentioned, the story is vague, the world building while present, has big jarring gaps that leave you disoriented every 3-5 chapters. 2) Personally, I don't like one of the MC's, the boy in the story has a really annoying personality, and you have to read about him for 1/3 of the chapters, really a story killer, and doesn't make me have much desire to keep... more>> reading. I really really wish the author had killed him off in the first 50 chapters, and moved on. <<less

This story is actually quite a rare find. Maybe it was because I didn't start reading with too many expectations, but it was definitely unique, as one can tell from the synopsis. However, I do have some bones to pick with this story.

Spoiler alert:
Spoiler

The author glosses over the whole "reincarnation" and "game element" thing. In the first few chapters, BANG! Guess what? Riku is actually someone that reincarnated with a "previous life's soul" attached. She's not "real". I actually found this intriguing. Then, the author immediately glosses over this aspect by having her offer the soul up.
It's never made clear what the details are; the whole "galge" vibe isn't cleared up when it comes to Rook either. You just kind of... Accept it that Rook is "omniscient"... At least when it comes to girls. That doesn't stop all of them from dying, though.

[collapse]

Ignoring all that, this world is incredibly vague. You get occasional info about these random cities and islands, but it is disorientating and never made into context. They're simply there to stage an event. Instead of a detailed map, I'd liken it to more of a bunch of floating islands. The characters just ride the plot train from one island to the next, and back stories are practically nonexistent except for Riku and Rook.
Spoiler

Of course, any character that seems close to Rook, and is female, is probably going to die. Quite possibly brutally.

[collapse]

The rest is fairly straightforward and expected. I give props to the author for crafting this unique story, but in the end, it's the tiny details that add up and prevent the unobstructed reading of this gem. <<less

My rating - 4.2/5

Non-bias Rating - 3.7/5

Katahane no Riku is both good and bad.

... more>> tl;dr - Enjoyable characters, decent action, no sense of real pressure/danger, lacking in regards to details/fore-planning. Ultimately, a good start, rough middle section, and in the more recent chapters it started to recover its former shine from the beginning..

The story primarily focuses on Riku, but it occasionally switches over to Rook. Both characters are equally important and, in some peoples opinions, might rub people off in a bad way during their development. In addition to this, we have a cast of characters that depict quite the difference of personalities, both good and bad. But I will let you as readers be the judge of that. Personally, I find many of the characters to be quite enjoyable, but I do wish the side characters had a little bit more depth going for them. In addition there are a few characters who you feel like should be more important, but, kind of aren't (?)

Now on to the predominately bad. There is an irksome lack of detail/explanations until necessary. From the beginning to the end, until something was required for that action/job/description, it rarely would have been mentioned beforehand. Here is an example of this.

Spoiler

Raku. Who is the apparent older sister of Riku and Rook that we had no idea existed until Rook was going through some turmoil and she was his deus ex machina, so to speak.

[collapse]

Further along the story the author/editor seem to have been improving on this aspect.

Edit: The Author/Editor has really been improving. It has pleasantly caught me by surprise. Characters are showing much dynamic changes in their traits. Side characters are still remaining as side characters with little development. But the characters more central to the story have had improvements by leaps and bounds, in my opinion.

On a more personal side note, if they didn't constantly remind us that this was based off of a galge I would never have thought the events were based off of one. Which is a twist one might not expect. I mean really, talk about throwing the typical thought-lines associated with a galge out the window. <<less

A dark protagonist, totally not a hero, but an evil. Turn away if you want to retain your sanity. But otherwise, welcome to the dark side.

It was quite interesting for the first 10 chapters of a protagonist who goes off fate's path and has to struggle for her place in the world. Then it starts going downhill in trying to illustrate her trials. In trying to boast the mc's prowess and awesomeness it comes off making her mary sue. She has accurate bad feelings, her unfailing tactical plans, and her inhuman achievements each of which always save the day.

A usual crutch to boast and praise the MC is by describing the difficulty they had while... more>> fighting enemies then overcoming the difficulty and the enemies at the same time. Such as killing an army and the boss then being pushed by back by a dropped in boss and a short description of not sleeping for several days and fighting through several battles and then about a paragraph later easily kills the boss. It's clumsy writing to drop info at the last second. Then surviving a point blank explosion while the bomber is obliterated and then being able to kill off over 50 elite guards while all the while saying she wouldn't be able to fight half the number in her condition. Her plans come down a single sentence she gives some orders to soldiers. A few chapters later it comes back as her plan saves the day. The battle boils down to she swing her halberd right, she swing her halberd left, she does the hokey pokey and swing her halberd behind, that's all her battles are?

She has a single minded devotion to her saviour and little character development. It's cute, adorable and disgusting and it's fine, not all characters need to have character development in a story just as some people will go through life with very little changes. Unfortunately this makes her the same as the blank face generic harem protagonist, less of a organic character and more a plot tool to move the story along.

Her brother has a praiseworthy goal of ending the war quickly and peacefully with the fewest death on both sides but he did it for an admirable selfish reason although he failed in the very first task. The author paints his failures and his excuses in detail to decrease his character value but by doing so the author inadvertently fleshes out the world and explains the mechanics. Such as the fate railroading hundreds years old military commanders to make s*upid decisions or how characters are weaker than they would have been. I find myself wanting to read about her brother more for the world building as well as character development. As of c49 he is on a path for character development to face off against an internal struggle to hold his belief and cling to fate's path that has become twisted or abandon its comfort and walk in the darkness. He has the demon enemies to the front and enemy to his rear ready to disinherit and kill him and that's before he has to unknowingly fight his sister somewhere down the road.

I can only hope the light novel is better where the editor can reign in Riku's... perfection. <<less

One of the very few novel that I legitimately enjoy. Every chapter that I finish makes me thirst for more.

Spoiler

Chapter 47 hit me really hard, not because it is sorrowful chapter, but because it kinda show us a glimpse of a series of bad end that will happen for everyone specially Riku in the future. And this bad ends are all Rooks fault.

F*ck Rook.

abandoned? Check. Killed by her family members? Check. Revived by a sort-of-devil's contract? Check. Broken heroine? Check. Super loyal mc? Check. Brutal event? Check. So here, the MC is a heroine who remembered (sort of) that the world she lived in is from a game and yet living in pleasure until she was killed by her family. Determined to get her revenge, she agreed to shinigami's contract and began her life to seek for her revenge. There's time skip which kind of awkward but I kinda like it (≧◡≦) ♡... more>> tee hee. The heroine is super loyal to her benefactor and her charming point is increasing when she's in battle, though there are some bad points, hehe. The plot is interesting, the one who should be a harem member yet not, is seeking for the revenge to people who are allies to the supposed hero of the game. Recommended if you are looking for action and revenge novels. <<less

Somebody gets reincarnated in a world resembling a certain videogame as the game's MC. Now he has cheat magic power, knowledge of future events and ability to turn girls into brainless haremettes by saying something nice to them. Too bad that the MC of this story is the potential haremette, that he left to die, because she wasn't cute enough. She survived and she's out for blood. Now, it's reckoning time for the cheat MCs, who gain everything with no real effort and treat the world as a game. The... more>> story of the heroine's struggles is ok, but I'm mostly reading it to see how the standard cheat MC gets screwed out of his haremettes. <<less

great story so far, got some interesting changes from the standard reincarnate in a game plot. I'm hoping she gets a little more acceptance from her benefactor though. She may be getting acceptance from others, but the one she holds the most importance for is considering her as a disposable pet.

it's honestly pretty hard to read and I hope he has a change of heart.

Very fast pace. But MC is very interesting. She does act like a little dog when it comes to a special person. A red devil demon to others. I have only read up to chapter 13 and still want to read more.

a female character going to get what to be doned. Quite rushed delevopment. She became a freakin badass. Look for redemption and revenge. There could be possible romance interest in this story for our main heroine.
