Empires rise and fall on the Yulan Continent. Saints, immortal beings of unimaginable power, battle using spells and swords, leaving swathes of destruction in their wake. Magical beasts rule the mountains, where the brave – or the foolish – go to test their strength. Even the mighty can fall, feasted on by those stronger. The strong live like royalty; the weak strive to survive another day.

This is the world which Linley is born into. Raised in the small town of Wushan, Linley is a scion of the Baruch clan, the clan of the once-legendary Dragonblood Warriors. Their fame once shook the world, but the clan is now so decrepit that even the heirlooms of the clan have been sold off. Tasked with reclaiming the lost glory of his clan, Linley will go through countless trials and tribulations, making powerful friends but also deadly enemies.

Come witness a new legend in the making. The legend of Linley Baruch!

Pros: Amazing fights. IET is one of the best at writing +visualizing +explaining fights/spells, if not the best. Names are not Chinese. Amazing character introductions. The world is solid, spells are well explained and built, you can fell the hierarchy and power. Creative and unique story pace, as it mostly won't repeat itself.

Cons: Cool characters will not be used again in the future, they won't do shit. No development for them. Nearly no romance, this is because interactions between characters are not good. Dialogues are not good. The world is... more>> vast, continents are like star systems but friends tend to bump in each other in this massive world.. More then once. This shouldn't even happen in our world, how could that possibly happen in a star system?? Writing has its problems. <<less

I honestly love IET's stories, and Coiling Dragon is the first one I am able to finish thanks to the completed translation.

The magic system is yet again inventive and interesting, I like the fact that in CD as well as other works of this author, the supreme experts have to understand natural laws/daos/profound mysteries to power up, which means that the techniques used will be developed, and the really powerful characters are not s*upid. Also, there are none of those harems which usually irritate me in LNs. Linley is very... more>> invested in his training, but his family/friends' well-being is his top priority. Now, romance isn't IET's strong suit in the sense that it isn't well-developped, Linley and his wife get together and that's it, but I honestly don't mind.

I definitely recommend this story if you like well-paced stories with an interesting power system, a clear-minded and growing MC, and well-written battles. <<less

Just read it. The translation is complete so you won't wait for the next chapters.

If you still don't line it after the end of volume 1 (23 chapters) then you can quit.

I started Wuxia with TDG (after reading the manhua) and then MGA. It was frustrating they weren't finished so I read CD and other novels were forgotten. The characters make sense unlike the novels I mentioned before. The hero even know heartbreak and knows true love, he doesn't collect girls who are interesting before falling in love with the... more>> MC and then become ornaments for him.

Not I eat tomatoes's best novel but we'll forgive him because it was one of his first. <<less

The story really great and beginner friendly to introduce somewhat unfamiliar with wuxa/xianxia because cultivation system is somewhat straightforward, character names aren't that hard to remember, the way he (IET) depicted fight scenes are really cool and epic.

I have to state that this story isn't my first Chinese Novel I read so I won't be too biased to it. I could actually gave this a five-star but the ending just made me feel empty. Instead of feeling like, "It's finished already... TT" I felt like "Ah, it's finished. Okay, then."

But before that, let me elaborate that this story writing is really great. I really enjoyed reading it. The character development is good but it's a little bit too focused to MC (not that it is a bad... more>> thing). The emotional scene is well-writen and I cried three times in this whole story. Go shed that manly tear (except that I'm a girl to be manly). Though if you want romance, you definitely can't have too high hope in this. There is romance but it's only a speck of dust.

Soo... what made this do not get 5-star from me?

Spoiler

-The arc after he became a Sovereign is too hasty and a little bit clumsy.
-The ending.
-In the end, he became the strongest so easily (immediately after he fused with the fire spark), became something-like Overgod just like that.
-Seriously, can't he let Grandpa Doehring rest in peace?! I love him too, okay.
-Everything is concluded so hastenly as if the author was in hurry to end this.

Coiling dragon was the first ever Chinese fantasy novel I read, I started off reading mangas and watching animes as a kid but never got into the novels cause I never had the patience. One random day I find wuxiaworld and start reading it and I was really surprised I never thought that a Chinese novel about a kid named linley would work but it did and I was taken on a journey through the long life of linley baruch and his dreams and aspirations and his troubles and deeds... more>> and I just fell in love with it. Definitely a good read, action, battles and training and cultivation are the highlights, romance and characters are not as good. Some characters don't develop at all and some are there for no reason but overall I would definitely recommend you to read this book. <<less

My first webnovel. There are better ones out there (Ze Tian Ji, World of Cultivation, Transcending the Nine Heavens, ISSTH, Emperor's Domination) but when I first read it I felt like my mind was blown. It felt like I read a hybrid of superhero comic book/martial arts a la Crouching Tiger. The story was absolutely amazing after having read pretty much all the major western fantasy stories such as The Wheel of Time series, The Malazan Book of the Fallen (I highly recommend that one).

Having now read other stories I... more>> would say that the author IET is the Michael Bay of the genre. His novels are bombastic and the numbers he throws out are ridiculous. But despite the flashy action, his stories (Coiling Dragon, Stellar Transformation, Desolate Era) lacks substance. It does not mean that they are not enjoyable, just as I enjoy a summer block buster. For people who have never read a Chinese webnovel I highly recommend Coiling Dragon as it starts out similar to a Dungeons and Dragon novel with magicians and warriors. The names are westernized so easier to remember. I even recommended my friend this novel. It is a good novel. Just know that there are even better novels out there after finishing reading this. And one huge plus going for this novel is that it is completely translated. <<less

I started reading the manga for Panlong when it originally came out. After the first few chapters I was hooked and needed more. I had never read a light novel up until this point but the story was absolutely fascinating I NEEDED more. Once I started reading the light novel it was like a fire was lit in me and I continued reading until I had completely caught up to the daily releases. I would wake up in the morning just to read the new release for this light novel.... more>> The story was absolutely brilliant, captivating, and entertaining. And going back and reading some of the manga the difference infuriate me such as the changing of Linley's master to female instead of male. Anyways this is a must read and is a perfect example of a beautifully Wuxia tale. <<less

(A 'realistic' review of everyone's beloved first chinese novel)

Everything that comes out of my mouth is a spoiler and I'm doing you a favor.

Spoiler

The short. Don't read this it's boring and everything past chapter 300 is dead weight. You insist? Then do your self a favor and go read desolate Era same author better work.

The translation is acceptable and it would be a good introduction to the genre if it was still the only option. However it isn't worth reading at this point because even if you are a biblophile of my lvl there are still better works to kill time on.

If you want a novel with a 'actually' intelligent protagonist who doesn't use luck and plot armor to power his way through every problem then read (Sovereign of the three realms)

If you want a protagonist who had both relationships and omg a PERSONSLITY?! Read (Heavenly Jewel change)

If you are just dissatisfied with Linleys passive approach to life, hop on over to (Against the gods) or (Martial god asura). There you will get a slightly better quality of writing, some romance, and endless, truly endless, mind numbing lvls of butchery and vengeance.

Tomatoes strong point is world building, world building, and putting some cool items and stuff inside more word building. If that's what you like go on over to (Desolate Era) it's a much better read and a newer work by the same. He's still growing a great deal as a author and DE superior to coiling in every way except the year it was written.

So I've just referred you away and towards other popular works, now I'll explain why.

1) The characters are wooden, there is isn't even enough character or relationship development over the course of the novel to keep the characters from being forgotten and the protagonists wife, children, and brother, are no exception.

2) The conflict is always direct battles, only the MC fights and the review that said it's like watching DBZ was spot on. !!! SO FAST! SOO SHINEY! OVER 9 BILLION!? But like listening to someone describe DBZ and you don't even get to watch the stuff.

3) Linley is a completely passive MC. He trains and 'accompanies' his family occasionally after ignoring then for a few 10, 100, 1000, years. You will here that 'accompanies' line so many times and just know that, THAT, is all the character development you will, EVER get.

Then some poor bastard didn't get the memo that Linley powered up again by over 9000 in his last training session. Doesn't like Linleys Jesus esk attitude or just didn't know he's competing with the actual god of that universe incarnate. And there's another dead stepping stone.
Under estimatedprotagonist syndrome is fun as hell but this is done really poorly. 90% of the conflict in this novel would never happen in the first place because even the dumbest fool would just think the MC is hiding his power after his 87th 'surprise' win.

Meh I'm getting bored explaining how boring this is btw stop reading either when Lumley becomes a saint or when Linley ascends to the next plane because that's when tomatoes thoroughly run out of ideas and the work falls apart. That's why everyone 'loves the novel' but gets bored. The actual novel it's only around 300 chapters and the rest is just filler with less content than first hundred.

[collapse]

Now I'm going to go see if Hail the king updated since that's not boring <<less

Like a lot of people, one of my first Xianxia. I become addicted to.
The progression of the story, and the personnage are truly enjoyable. We can't help but try to guess what will happen after.

I recommend it.

As a novel this is still one of my favorites even if I only gave it 3 stars. The story is good and his journey very detailed even if the ending was rushed. Its just that the character and the relationship was where almost completely empty shells.

I also believe that since he accepted Delia (for waiting for so long) he should have accepted the other girl named Jenne too since she sacrificed at least just as much. I think he should have put some more effort in letting his friends break through and stuff so they don't die like that, like snap saint low level long life. There are a lot of holes in the story, probably because of him mindlessly swinging his heavysword around for no particular reason

The first few arcs of this story are classic, with genuinely moving moments of heartache and sacrifice that are so thoroughly lacking in the genre. Investment in the characters builds up over time and when tragedy strikes, characters you genuinely care about suffer. It's unfortunate then that the further the story progresses, the less consequential it feels. Characters that I cared about are casually tossed aside, to be brought back only as an excuse for a new villain to job to Linley. A revolving door of new acquaintances... more>> come in and out, and as the story starts having cosmic repercussions, I care less about it than when it was just Linley coming to terms with the end of his first love as a young man. <<less

First xianxia I’ve read. I thought it was amazing. It’s just that after reading so many xianxia or other webnovels. I’ve come to realise that the story is lacking a bit. It wouldn’t have hurt the story if this xianxia was 2000 chapters instead of 800. There were too many timeskips. The adventurous feeling was good but a bit lacking because of all the timeskips. He got children and grandchildren but he barely or never interacts with them. There is barely any romance aswell. It’s still definitely worth the read... more>> though, and it’s one of the best translated ones out there.

I give it a 3.8/5

It might seem a bit harsh, but a 3.8 is still a solid 7.6/10 which in my opinion is very good. A story is almost impossible to be perfect after all and a perfect story is a 5/5 in my opinion. <<less

The golden standard for Xianxia. Coiling Dragon is currently the longest fully-translated Xianxia series, and it is a thrilling adventure from beginning to end. Perhaps the most famous Chinese novel series in the west, Coiling Dragon is a tale of battles, revenge, power-ups, love, friendship, family, power-ups, and the difference between mortals and gods. And did I mention power-ups? Perhaps what makes this series so popular is how similar it is to shounen manga and anime in Japan. By no means is it bad, but it is somewhat irritating when... more>> you can start comparing Coiling Dragon to Naruto and feel like they have a similar ranking system. It also has writing inconsistencies, with some arcs being engaging and exciting, and other arcs just putting me to sleep after reading the first couple sentences. Despite these flaws, Coiling Dragon has heart, creativity, and characters that help establish it as one of the best Xianxia series out there right now. <<less

I finished this as I wrote this.

I Eat Tomatoes have a lot of works, but according to native speakers whom i've met and have thoroughly read all of his works untranslated, Coiling Dragon / Panlong is without a doubt the best work (not probably magnus opus) that he (the author) has put forth.

If you've never read any of his (the author's works), I suggest to start with Coiling Dragon first. Read this if you're into
- Xianxia (hero goes all the way up)
- hero powerlevels with deus ex... more>> machina
- brotherhood trope. <<less

Coiling Dragon, one of the first complete Xianxia stories I’ve finished. Story-wise, its interesting if you are already into Xianxia, if you arent, it takes some time to getting used to. The plot is solid, up to the point at the end. It has action, adventure, drama, love, and laughter. Translation quality, its pretty up there, sure there are some typos and minor errors, but im pretty sure he did not have an editor when RWX was releasing like 2 chapters a day (at least), so it was acceptable. Story Telling, it wasn’t lacking at all. The detailed description of movements, techniques, landscape, etc was really immersive. Though there was an over use of certain expressions (“didn’t know whether to laugh or cry”) but it was a charm point for the story IMO. Character development, I would say it was solid, it seems all the important characters you want to root for was well developed, and all the bad guys you want to hate was also well developed. Only problem was, some characters who became irrelevant to the story later on disappears with very little closure

I rate it 9.5/10, its really good, not really perfect (only because

This is the story of a guy with the most incredible, mind-blowing luck, especially when you consider the astronomical scale of the universe he lives in as he trains himself and meets just the right people at just the right time. Aside from how unbelievable his luck is, the story is entertaining and captivating, though a bit repetitive sometimes. The translator did an excellent job.

The story building is pretty good, and rather unique, no reincarnation or transport to another world to defeat the demon king. The character is extremely weak at some points in the story and extremely strong in another part. I won't lie it gets pretty repetitive at some point, and it made me drop it for a while.

I would give it 4-5/5 stars if possible, a nice story which absolutely draw the reader in.

I stopped reading around the beginning of volume 13. It didn't do anything wrong I just started to feel bored. Nice action and nice story. Frequent updates and I did like it. Just that MC got a bit too OP and seemed like no one could possibly challenge him which then led to his everyday life and I just got bored and didn't feel anything from the romance.
