Kōdo Ikusei Senior High School, a leading prestigious school with state-of-the-art facilities where nearly 100% of students go on to university or find employment. The students there have the freedom to wear any hairstyle and bring any personal effects they desire. Kōdo Ikusei is a paradise-like school, but the truth is that only the most superior of students receive favorable treatment.

The protagonist Kiyotaka Ayanokōji is a student of D-class, which is where the school dumps its “inferior” students in order to ridicule them. For a certain reason, Kiyotaka was careless on his entrance examination, and was put in D-class. After meeting Suzune Horikita and Kikyō Kushida, two other students in his class, Kiyotaka’s situation begins to change.

Note:- Even though Volume 0 is the prequel of this series, it is advised to read till Year 2 Volume 8 beforehand to avoid getting spoiled (which is precisely the reason why it was released after Y2 V8).

Anime:-
Season 1: Volume 1 to 3 + Volume 4.5
Season 2: Volume 4 to 7 + Volume 7.5

Guys,

whoever reads this Review right now probably wonders if the 10 Volumes (9 Volumes are translated) long journey is worth the Read or not. And I would say YES! Its definetly worth the Read. Im currently up to date with the translation and I must say its Amazing. Every Arc, every Volume and even every Interaction the MC has with someone has got an even deeper meaning than you think. Because everything he does is part of his plan. He isn't like the typical MC in every other Story... more>> who is a Hero, I would even call him an Antihero. You ask why ? Well, read Volume 4 onwards, thats where the Real sh*t Starts ;) <<less

I know everybody has their opinions, but for me this series are kinda overrated. Yeah, it's still a good read than other light novels but I don't think it's a masterpiece as people says.

It's has good concept, like Baka to Test or Assasination Classroom who want to fight "classroom discrimination", but without comedy and more intense.

Peoples says that the plot and the MC's moves are the reason why this series is popular, but not for me.

Yeah, I like the plot twists with strategy and smart moves from MC, but the... more>> plot are kinda forced tbh. The hidden plot isn't really a "strategy", it's just "playing with the rules". Technically, the plot twists are unpredictable, but basically you even can do anything to win by "playing with the rules", so it isn't really mind-blowing.

Spoiler

Just like the MC's moves in Volume 4 for deceiving his group. The rules for altering the school emails are forbidden, but faking your phone by swapping with others isn't. So faking the school emails by swapping your phone with others to deceive your group is legal move.

I know it's unpredictable moves, but bruh... bending the rules like this isn't cool.

It is a good novel. I give it 4 (to be fair 4.5) only because of the somewhat confusing romantic plot.

Plot: It is really good. The whole school imitating a small society, for the purpose of teaching students how to adapt and succeed in real life. We also have children with a sad past or awkward personality that all normal schools will give up on them and they will lead a bad end in life if not changing. We also have a badass MC that helps people in his extreme... more>> way and some good plot twist. It is 5/5 IMO because it suits my taste for targeting a realistic issue that most young people in my country face: the difference between student life and real life.

Character background and development: It is really great too since all characters have their own individuality and thrive to be better. The story is not just about the MC but more about the people he interacts: classmate, schoolmate, rival, and especially his partner (I don't say friend because MC doesn't know about friendship yet). The MC also is the most perfect (ability-wise) and the most imperfect (emotional-wise) with a logical background and his view is fun to watch because it is like he is a baby learning about the world. 5/5 for this one too

Romantic plot: It is only 3.5/5 to me. Don't get me wrong, all of the girls are cute and lovable in their own special way and I like them own. The romantic here is pretty slow and subtle but it is not too bad too. The real problem is the confusion of the female protagonist's status. Normally the 1st girl who interacts with the MC should be the one that has the closest relationship with the protagonist OR have the most influence on the protagonist. But this novel just jumps from the 2 ones that interact with the MC the most to the one that has nearly no-interaction with the MC at all. It is like the author tried to establish the relationship between the MC and the 1st girl at first but due to her not having enough popularity or the character too stereotype, he suddenly thought of the new girl with more special background and relationship with the MC and pushed her to him which is kind of forced. It would be much better if the author established some form of contact between them beforehand. <<less

You can says that Classroom of the elite is my most favourite Series. It has a good storyline like Ordinary School life series at the same time some parts are really mystery that make this series interesting especially about MC life.A lot of plot holes and Author knows how to play that very well. And explained in every volume little by little. Characters background are literally Gold (Gold).

Very good read. We have seen the so-called uninterested MC before, sharp tongued girl duo before but usually it breaks down and becomes another cliche. So far they are sticking with it. Probably because the reason MC is in school is not to pass but to find an answer to A question, so he is not all bluster.

Only problem is I have a hard time suspending my disbelief about this school system. They dont let people into the school just on grades; reason being that japan not in a good... more>> situation and hereditary system is bad. But class D keeps getting trolled. Its one thing to keep info from students about how the system works, but the teach lied to their face about what to study; and played it off as an accident. I hope they explains this sooner rather than later or I might loose interest in the school aspect. Only excuse so far is that life is not fair and they are simulating real work conditions, but the point of the school is to change that system not encourage a bunch of kids to be pessimistic untrusting jerks. <<less

It starts out good but get extremely boring and repetitive later on. The students act as if getting expelled is the same as death, which really gets on my nerves. All the so called "schemes" are nothing special, just small tricks. The fact that it later becomes a harem novel really doesn't help (I loathe harem).

And this is coming from me, whose first light novel was this one. But you should check it out. Maybe you might even like it. I personally don't.

I think it's pretty okay, I enjoyed a lot of the earlier volumes. The premise was interesting and the twists were pretty good. Tho some were a bit lacking when compared to the build up.

Dialogue wise I find some of them cheesy or cringey (like those weird sfx the girls make, twuah!? Or something) but eh, it's still fine. Probably my biggest issue is with the logic in this novel. Sometimes it's too ridiculous to ignore, considering this is set in a non-fantasy world.

Spoiler

like when horikita tries to give an explanation abt how the MC got 100 on a math exam. Actually there's more but this one really made me wanna roll my eyes

its really hard to determine the rating of this novel. unlike other novels where you can judge it immediately after reading it. this novel actually gets better the more you dig deeper to it. because at first glance, the novel only seems like a generic good novel.

you can even find some inconsistencies here and there. but if you think deeper about it. only then will you realize it isn't a plothole.

this novel has one of the best characters persona I have ever read... but I'm not saying it's like real... more>> people. because if you haven't realized it yet. real people aren't good at all for a story. they are too inconsistent and random. what I mean is that the characters in this novel are really complex and yet still compelling for us readers.

The problem is that you won't really understand what I'm talking about even if you read the whole novel... to enjoy the real goodies in this novel. you are required to actually read between the lines.. as the minimum. because not only do you need to dissect their thoughts and actions. and comparing it to other characters' pov to that character too. some actions might not even get explained until later in the future volumes. it sucks. but that's what makes this novel so good.

you want to enjoy it? you need to work for it.

although it's fine if you don't want to do all the work. as even then the novel is still good. I don't recommend having a very high expectations.

if you really want to enjoy it, I really recommend going to the reddit community. it really helps you to understand the novel.... that or all you going to see are people comparing each other waifus... yeah...

now, it's pretty clear that I have some biased toward this novel. but I hope you understand that I have very high standards towards character design in a novel. and I've never seen a novel being so good at it like this.

believe me when I said that the best aspect in this novel is not its smart tactics or its cool fighting scene or even its its compelling plot.

the best one is actually the character design.... other than the waifu of course. that part is very debatable. I mean look at those THIC THI-.... ehem sorry. anyway just give it a try. it's worth a shot. <<less

One of the best LNs ever, side characters are endearing and engaging+ protag is one of the best part of the whole premise

I came here after anime, but it got better after that part

My favourite characters is Ryyuen and Koenji (Obviously as side charecters)

... more>> The exams are creative and the whole business of the LN

Ayanokouji's past is mysterious (although it is revealed slowly)

But the translator has been a lot slow, I am waiting 2-3 weeks for just a part (sorry man but it's just a complaint don't be hurt if possible 🙏🙏)

The girls aren't weak and bystanders but also the leaders of the class hence a great thing

Ayanokouji is the best and I repeat THE BEST !!!!

So it's a must read

Thanks a lot Mr. Translators for this masterpiece (but pls be a little fast) <<less

COTE is very CRINGE and EDGY. It contains garbage and fast-paced developments. Like wtf did the characters do for the author to write them like that. The story is also very rushed, unrealistic, has a bunch of plotholes, and lacks depth which makes you want to question whether the author really planned this novel at all. The illustrations feel out of place and the girls' proportions are too much for a supposed high schooler. Seriously, this is just mixing up your job with your fetishes and perversion. Though I should've... more>> expected this since the illustrator is a doujin artist. Anyway, unless you love edgy writing about a machiavellian MC that will cringe you then I don't recommend this novel to you.

P.S: This is only my own opinion based on what I've seen so far. Just wanted to remind that because I don't want to be attacked by an edgy 14-year old who worship the MC. <<less

After seeing the large amount of praise for this series, I went in with high expectations. Unfortunately, I was left pretty disappointed.

The number one problem with this story is the main character and his relationship with everything around him. I find it hard to actually care about the story, the characters or the world when the MC himself doesn't care. Sure he's supposed to be some kind of manipulative and cunning geezer, but it shouldn't be to the point where every single relationship he has is based on lies.

At the... more>> end of the day, this is just another power fantasy with a cold aloof protagonist. If you can get past the problems I had with the MC, then you'll find the story very enjoyable. The side characters are infinitely more interesting and from what I've read, it's pretty well written. It's a shame that the story was written from such a cold perspective. <<less

After watching anime's first season I decided to read the novel because honestly there was no to zero chance of a second season.

I am extremely glad that I read the novel, honestly, anime can't even compare to the novel. Anime dropped many main points and scenarios which created a great deal of foreshadowing and maintained the mystery of the story. The anime also created a misunderstanding of an FMC (horikita) which she is not, FMC is shown in letter parts of the story and you will be surprised to find... more>> who it was. A great deal of character development is given to MC and also side characters with their unique backstories and two-faced personalities (ex kushida). Every new volume has a new antagonist or at least new events which didn't seem repetitive and keep you always hooked on continuing ahead until the end.

Mc's planning and scheming are depicted greatly in the novel and at the end of each novel all the puzzles fit together and you get a great deal of satisfaction for reading carefully without missing a single point. Give it a try if you watched anime and even if you haven't given it try not gonna regret <<less

Ignore MondSemmel because he reviews this novel when he just read 1 volume where the novel was quite boring

But it gets better in the later volumes and this novel has one of the best MCs I have ever seen. The other characters are incredible too with the fact that they are all scheming behind the scenes.

The psychological battles between classes are intense and keeps the reader wondering what they're going to do. Physical fights also exist in this novel though somewhat rare, the MC is overpowered like the tags says... more>> when he fights against other people.

Side Note: Make no mistake and think that ConfusedTL dropped the series, because novel updates for some reason isn't updating it, the series is still being continued if you go to the translators site <<less

The best novel I've ever read so far, perfect MC, likeable FMLs (maybe horikita is a little bit annoying with her food thing), perfect pacing of the story, commedy isn't cringy, some characters are pretty cliche at first, but later we can see into their souls, minds and it ends up with characters actually not being cliche at all.
MC IS SMART, MANIPULATIVE, NOT DENSE (when it comes to romance theoretically).
Just read and enjoy the story it really is great.

Quick Review

The first two volumes establish what kind of environment and attitude the school has towards the education of their students.

From the third onwards is when the MC starts doing 200 IQ plays and it's fun to try and figure out how everything links together because the clues are sprinkled throughout each arc.

This is basically Detective Conan except with schemes instead of mu*der mysteries.

If I didn't know about the MC's true personality from watching the anime first, I probably would have dropped this series during the first few chapters. Since I've watched the anime first, which covers the first three volumes, it's put an interesting twist on the MC's internal dialogue in the light novels. Although he pretends to be a normal guy, he actually doesn't feel any connection with the other characters and is only using them for his own ends, manipulating them every step of the way. His thoughts about friendship... more>> and feeling things toward other characters are actually 100% fake. In the light novels, he gives off a pretty sleazy impression, but it comes off as quite cunning in the anime. If I had read the light novels first, then I would have rated this series as a 2/5 stars. Since I have higher expectations about reveals based on the anime, I'm giving it 3/5 stars for now.

The most interesting volume thus far is the third one. That said, I would recommend watching the anime over reading the light novels. There are some small differences but nothing that would change the storyline.

Supporting characters include a tsundere nadeshiko and a green tea b*tch. Nothing special in particular. <<less

i finished reading up to volume 1 and watched the anime, so this review is somewhat a comparison.

what I like from the novel is of course you got a lot of detail about everything that happening, it's for story and world building, but if you compare it with the anime (which is pretty good) it seems to be a lot of unnecessary information is distracting you in the novel.

with the anime we can see how our MC looks, he's by no means your usual and normal guy, he looks like... more>> doesn't even care about what other people do but is still observant about his surrounding and can plan ahead, and in the anime they potray our MC to be a mysterious guy with a dark past.
and if you plan to read the novel after watching the anime just prepare for the big difference, novel author potray MC to be somewhat gloomy, unsocial guy but still a normal teen, with a lot of detail reader can know a lot of what his thoughts are and what he feels at the moments, and this detail make MC to be potrayed as a normal (cliche) or rather a bland character that somewhat have a mysterious past.

maybe to enjoy this novel is to read it without comparing it with the anime, but with the anime already finished airing and it's still somewhat new it seems to be hard. <<less

This story is worth looking at. The MC gives off a feeling like "I could solve all these problems if I just put in some effort" but coasts along instead, satisfied with his current place. He's dragged along by an abusive, prideful hot girl who is all tsun, no dere for now. For the first volume so far, it's set up so that it feels like a bunch of stuff is going on in the background, but really they just talked and studied. It feels interesting even though nothing really... more>> has happened so far. I'd give it a chance if you like the main two characters. <<less

Overrated, in all version, people keep yapping about it to me, and recommend me to watch the anime. It was a let down, then I read the novel, still a let down. Because it boils down to 2 main overused logic problem (actually more than 2 but these following 2 is the major problem) : Trolley problem and Prisoner's dilemma. And the other 1 minor problem that actually bother me to no end.

The main Character, constantly lived his life doing the logic and ethic of "Trolley Problem" while... more>> solving the problem of "Prisoner's dilemma". If I were him, I would do what rapper culture do, "no snitching" or be quiet and evade or solve the problem while ACTUALLY being passive. But noooo, the author is too "sMArT" to do this and had to do the most convoluted plan known to mankind to solve the problem, and because of this something that can be solved in half of page, become 17 pages long and ate whole of the volume of the novel. The author want to pain the main character as a rational agent but ended up making him look s*upid to me.

If somebody here know the author, please tell him, Bayesian game and Bayesian probability exist, and redo this entire novel on the premise that incomplete information is the reality of things and act on it using Bayesian probability, so the main character wouldn't be seen as a bumbling fool that trod his way to victory by pure luck.

Did anybody here get what I'm trying to say? No? Okay I will explain a bit more.

Kiyotaka Ayanokōji Lived his life with everything has to be decided with game theory, and the most overused one is the Trolley Problem, now this has become a problem, because the Trolley Problem requires the actor must know EVERY kind of information, in which MC obviously don't have, the author tries to write that the MC is a perceptive person who captures information quite well. But obviously this is not enough, several of his movement can not be chalked up as "calculated", more like it's just his luck as MC is working in this case. How do he know if he choose this "track" he will "kill" less people and get the desired result? Or do nothing and no snitching which essentially worked the same? (See the problem with the Trolley Problem Logic of the MC had here?) To me, whichever direction the MC is going, he will get what he actually want anyway, the so called "Freedom from his 'father'". So the plot, the logic, the ethic goes into tr*sh. So what's the point writing volume 1-7? Being filler volume or something? This is why Trolley problem don't work with Prisoner's dilemma, if you want to impress immature audience with "oh how smart MC was", sure it will work, but it definitely wouldn't impress matured audience who already know how society works.

Now onward to another (minor) problem. You see, cooperation is everything, with author placing prisoner's dilemma left and right, why nobody worked together? Is it because the ego of a teenager? Nah, doesn't seems so, during my highschool year, my class and the other 4 class matchfix the tug of war and football game so everybody can get the prize they wanted and be happy (some want the prizes, the other just want it to be over quickly so they can go home early, etc), yet in this novel, every teenagers are petulant uncooperative child? What the heck happened with communications? Don't these teenagers have mouth? What about hand and fingers? Can't they type stuff using their smartphone? I think the author need to go back to his mid and highschool and actually learn from the actual students.

There are many other criticism I had for this novel, but these 3 is truly problematic for me to keep enjoying it. I can't help to but to give this novel (and the anime) bad rating, because the behavior of these people don't actually reflect the title which is "Welcome to the Classroom of the Supreme Ability Doctrine", It's more like "welcome to the classroom of criminals and mentally disabled". "Classroom of the elite"??? More like "Classroom of the socially inept".

For the closing note, sorry to the people who recommend me this novel and anime, but seriously, I don't like novel that promises you a conflict between character or group of characters but that conflict can be mediated, or worked to become non-conflict or solved together, AND IS written in a way that don't mesh with Conflict Theories (seriously read about this stuff, at least wikipedia article is enough for you to understand about this stuff, but please read it first so you will know my dislike for this novel). <<less

Probably one of the most, if not the MOST overrated Light Novel of all time.

It's a decent series with unique premise, and interesting characters, only held back by it's seemingly "perfect" yet incredibly dull protagonist.

To be fair, I would probably like it more if it came out like 10 years ago, maybe I'm just too old to get the appeal of such a aimless and listless overpowered type of protagonist trying so hard to look sophisticated. Because I think the worldbuilding and cast of characters are interesting enough to keep... more>> me from reading, only that the boring protagonist that barely develops as a character hinder the experience. <<less
