    • This novel's best aspect is that it is self-aware and therefore freakishly enjoyable as the author knows exactly what the reader wants to see (Foreshadowing keeps those pages turning, you've been warned)
    • Epic "leveling up" story
    • Epic boss fights (I just read Invisible Dragon and epic boss fights are now forever dead in my brain)
    • Epic gear (think monster hunter)
    • Epic Waifu candidate (s)...... do they **** though?
      Spoiler

      yes

      [collapse]
    • Protagonist who isn't simply just lucky (gotta work for the OPness)
    • Toika (author) put fun first but still ended up making a cohesive story which can't be said for most web novels
    • Translator did a great job
Tldr: this novel has all the lovable tropes of a leveling up story, a solid plot, and after reading it, I felt completely satisfied with little to no complaints about the author's decisions

It was fun.

It's an easy-going comedy, with action and OPness.
If you're looking for a Justice's Paladin with the Greater Good as a goal, keep walking.

I didn't find any big incoherence, contrary to what people say.
Everything will be explained later, the "LATER" is important.

You can't judge a 349 chapters story in less than 100.

I'll re-read it with pleasure later !

PS Sorry for my bad English, I'm not a native speaker.

I have read/tried reading several isekai type novels. Although this is also an isekai I found this a lot more enjoyable to read. Why?

First: This is not JP but Korean. Meaning that the main character is not a beta-f*g with weak personality. Even though he is not a romance expert he can still communicate properly without stuttering when speaking with the opposite s*x. Another thing with this being Korean is that the over politeness is no where to be seen. MC speaks as he wishes and isn't afraid to offend... more>> someone.

Second: Lore. When reading isekai I always wonder how could a world like this be possible. Well this is a story that will tell the logic behind all of it. Soon after the story starts rolling the author informs us with more details of how this progressive system works and why somethings are so (skills, leveling, mana etc.). I think reading this will increase your view of going to another world.

Third: MC is OP not because god, but because logical reason. The story begins basically with MC training and doing what he wants while getting stronger (power up -prologue). Some think it's boring because ''if I want powerful MC I want it nao'', but personally I think this just increases the depth of the reason behind the power. MC worked a lot harder and longer compared to all the others so of course he should be stronger, but still he is limited for he cannot use mana. Strength that was allowed to others was not allowed to him so it's balanced. Also most of his skills seem broken just because the system sees him as a person that just has done that much and has put a lot of effort in things. The system is not broken but everything is rightfully his. I could go into more details on this topic but to not spoil anything: Just read!

Fourth: Breaking the fourth wall. There is a lot of talk about foreshadowing. The MC has enough understanding of plots because he has read a lot of books and can guess how things will go. Although not omnipotent he still can use this for his own advantage. Also this skips many overly generic events while still keeping the story intact.

Fifth: Psychology and character development. I personally enjoy reading into the characters to learn what kind of people they are. The beginning of the story seems boring but in my opinion it was closer to psychological horror. Try placing your self in the shoes of Yu Ill Han and try feeling every second of his life. Then think would you be mentally stable in the same situation. As the story progresses this is easily forgotten because he does things like he is playing a game and trying to gain rewards, but sometimes the other characters remind us what made MC think like he does. But more interesting is development of his personality. New characters force change in his character even if he doesn't admit it. As a reader it's easier to notice it though you need to consciously analyse his character from time to time because his change is very subtle, but it is easier to notice the further you read.

Sixth: Almost all of the characters have a meaning (even if small). (Won't say anything more because spoilers)

I rate: 4, 5/5

Probably the best isekai I have read, but the genre is missing something that doesn't fill that last half a star for me.

Read If you need something new.

Definitely read if you want to find out about the Isekai-themes reasonnings.

One of my favorite novels thus far. This is a great novel, nice pacing, nothing super repetitive (i.e. the novels that repeatedly say you're courting death, you think you can kill me, you and I had a disagreement so my entire sect hates you blah blah blah). Every new enemy has a different story and has different reasons why they fight the MC (kinda hard to do I get it), the MC is OP yes.... but for very good reasons, the MC is not bland and actually has character... more>> development (this is one of the selling points to me), the story is definitely a roller coaster and will catch you by surprise. I have dropped this novel a long time ago, I couldn't afford the stamina to even persist the first 2 chapter, the author s*upidly destroyed the Openness of the MC before it start, he keep on throwing huge amount of years just for the MC to learn simple tasks. He really destroyed a huge amount of the potential of this story.

Spoiler

even now for example in the chapter 3 the MC started learning smiting but he spent 5 years just so that he could make sword that could be considered having an edge, even a caveman or a monkey would be able to do better with only a rock and a peace of metal, while the MC has the all the knowledge of modern humanity and all of it's resources, this is ridiculous, even if the MC does no matter what, say he split the moon, I can't perceive him op considering the amount of time he spent on learning things, the only commendable part about him is his persistence.

[collapse]

though I run out of thing to read so I will persist until the humanity return and see. Ok let's see if this hundreds of years could add any good thing to the story.

Edit:

The more I read, the more I realize that the author is going strait to a cliff. He is persistent on making the world circle around the MCs and how to makes him castaway, and loner.

Spoiler

even making the gods witch could control time and space unable to trap a bunch of monsters in a dungeon, asking for the MC to help them do that instead. And while the MC keep whimpering over being alone, but the truth is he is the one that choose that, even set his goal on becoming a god (i don't know who told him that he could be one) so he could be in the same level of a woman angel that he like. Then find her

[collapse]

well this is so childish, worst than a shonen work, I will try persisting till chapter 20, and then decide whether to drops it again or not. <<less

It's a really fun novel, especially if you're tired of cliches and generic tropes. But not because the novel is free of such things, but because they are intentionally included for comedic purposes. The MC even points these parts out.

Unfortunately, that changes at the end of the series. While there were good aspects about the ending, it was still bad compared to the rest.

What I found the most annoying about the ending is the "last boss", his intentions were too generic. Seriously, this "wanting power for the sake of power"... more>> needs to go away. It makes the villains look like little kids. <<less

I've recently been going through a couple of Korean novels after having caught up to the latest chapters of the Chinese ones I've read. I have to say, the dialog and characters are so much better in Korean novels

Everyone Else is a Returnee doesn't have a mind-blowing plot or incredible emotional moments, but I found it really entertaining with its likeable characters and hilarious scenes. It's a great story that doesn't take itself too seriously. I'm glad this got translated.

This was one of the novel I'm glad I finished reading. Despite all the super duper ex machina at the last arcs of the story and the lack of suspend because we all know Yu Illhan is gonna win anyway, the characters grew on me and they were great.

Beware though, this novel ain't for someone looking for a hero who grew up slowly and amidst all despair and destruction clung to hope and rise up against the evil God.

And for some spoilers and why I think it's great despite all... more>> that

This novel is about someone who was already from the very start was meant to be the new God. His power was overwhelming from the start. Even if some trouble happened to him, he'll still win in the end. For better or worst, he didn't realise the fact that he's basically all powerful until half of the story is done with.

So yeah, if you're searching for the story of a hero fighting against evil with what little power he has, this is not it.

But if you're searching for a novel about an OP MC that knows what he is doing and he literally ended the story by being an almighty God, than you are in the right place <<less

The story kept up a good variation of pace and interesting setting until the author was going to tie things up. Then things fell down a cliff and it was a chore to get through the last volumes where the format totally changed due to the scale of things. It felt like going from One Piece to DBZ.

It is one of great novels I've read. The character developments are always good. The early chapters about the growth of the MC are really likeable. As I watch how to the story progress whether the development are serious or not, it's really fun to read because of the comedic dialogue. The conversation and narrator is really hilarious. The story start from a simple one into a larger scope, but the quality didn't drop. Well it's a FUN novel I really recommend to read.

Early arcs in the story were fun to read, though later arcs were not as fun for me. This story is totally about Yu Ilhan's journey to OPness, with the aid of a number of side characters. IMO, the side characters have unique personalities (though coloured by the characteristic humour of the author). That said, the side characters don't have their past histories fleshed out, which is only reasonable when even the MC doesn't have his past revealed. Afterall, this isn't a drama.

The story is a comedy, which happens to... more>> have some apocalyptic elements. There is no drama, though there is plenty of action, especially in the earlier arcs. However, in the later arcs, many fights are resolved easily, with an explicit anticlimax, implicitly poking fun at the typical shounen-style "filled with too many climaxes" boss fights.

Spoiler

A representative example of this is the Final Boss fight, where the MC had over-prepared to the point that he was able to whack the boss easily.

[collapse]

There is plenty of foreshadowing in this story, with more than a few cases where the MC directly points it out. However, it's not breaking the Fourth Wall, but because

Other than the MC leveling up, we also get to see his emotional growth. From being the ultimate loner, he learns to build relationships with other people, and even has romantic relationships leading to marriage.

Christians probably shouldn't read this story, especially if they can't handle criticisms to their God. "God screwed up" is a complaint the MC makes quite often in the story. Later on, we learn the truth behind this, which is

This is a really good novel. It's strength lies in it's world-building. The author does a good job creating a large, plausible universe and creates factions and characters that you can imagine would exist. There are many little things mentioned, especially in the crafting stages that really give the novel some life.

The main weakness of the novel lies in its characters. To begin with, the MC is known for breaking the logic of the world. It is mentioned several times that this is because of his incredible work-ethic and boldness.... more>> While this is partly true, there are places where the MC is stuck, waiting to meet the requirements to level up and still getting stronger anyway. Again, this is kind of explained away, but it does give the MC that feeling of plot-armour that numbs any dangerous moment in battles. As for the supporting characters, some of them are quite good and funny on their won. But their interactions start to suffer when brought together. A notable one is the wolfkin-princess Ericia, who has always seemed to me to be excluded by others except her own followers. Then there is the fact that the MC does expand his harem, but in doing so makes factions, such that having the entire group gather at one point feels awkward. The girls don't (and considering the story, shouldn't) get on well with each other. This kind of ruins the group dynamic for me.

A good characteristic of the MC is that he is not a typical JP novel Gary-stu. He isn't always excessively modest, or a guy whose interactions with girls seems like a high-school boy's wet dreams, or a guy who stumbles around apologizing for breathing the same air as the people around him while allowing other people to do whatever they want on his land. This guy is no pushover. And in later chapters, when he gets the strength to back his talk, he shows it. So you won't feel frustrated having to read about a wimpy MC winning on luck alone.

And this novel is near completion already. I think now is a good time to jump on the bandwagon. You'll get to be excited for every release. A word about the translator: He is consistent in his releases, trustworthy with donations and a conscientious person, whose translations are high quality. He seems to have no intention of dropping this before its completion and has never (to my memory) delayed chapters. So join us already and have a good time. <<less

The novel isn't particularly flawed like so many of the genre but it doesn't have much depth. Which is, of course, fine considering the nature of the novel but after bingeing 120 chapters in one sitting it still leaves me disinterested. I enjoyed it while I read it and I may come back to it when I have nothing else to read. It had some unique elements but the execution was bland overall.

Frankly speaking the scathing 1 stars make far less sense to me than the 5 stars-- how could... more>> you feel that much negative emotion for something that is pretty much mediocre and easily consumed when many highly rated novels have far more problematic issues (their fondness for r*pe and ridiculous portrayal of women being a recurring motif).

*Feel free to skip to the end if too bothered to read this entire thing

-------

Personally I love over-powered protagonists. As long as the world and the events itself don't blow too off the proportion and manages to be consistent then I would not hesitate to dwell upon and see the adventures of the main character. I only wish that more of the popular works would be based on a female protagonist though. Works like Kumo desu ga was just an downright insult to any fantasy novels I've ever read, other... more>> than Sarah J. Maas's Female Assassin novel series.

Story & Rating: [4.5/5]

That aside, Returnee and Seoul Station's Necromancer have both brought out interesting stores I have read in such a long time. I might just be still relatively new to reading LNs/WNs (still intentionally avoiding most CNs), but I am no newbie when it comes to reading fantasy literature in print. And despite having read many fantasy stories growing up as a kid, these two works with their settings of "monsters using the system of dungeons to invade Earth irl" have honestly brought upon a profound change in my heart. And unlike it's other counterpart (S.S.N.) which later ends up having a dungeon system which I felt expanded beyond the scope of the story's reality a little; Returnee still, after 143 chapters manages to capture my interest. (Ever much so to the point where I've stayed up until 5am in the morning just binge read this series. *sighes*) I only wished that before going in, the synopsis on this page could have been better written - if the author himself ended up writing this, then well... I don't know what to say.

So overall, just for the refreshing story idea alone ends up earning a 4.5 from me. (A rating of 5 will always go to stories like Haken no Kouki Altina) And coupled with the fact that again, I love OP protagonist stories, reading Returnee ended up being a blast! If I hadn't read Kumo-desu ga prior to this, I might have complained that this story was one of those which took forever to get going - but in comparisons to Kumo-desu this story doesn't focus entirely on a single or multiple dungeons, and has a reasonable pace and story progression.

And unlike "the Lazy Swordsmaster", this series has plenty of fights and action that manages to build up the protagonist "Yu IlHan" in a reasonable manner, where even if he later ends up acquiring everything, he still sticks to his the fighting style he used from the beginning.

Characters & Rating: [3/5]

I agree with some of the reviews here which stated that the characters apart from the protagonist are bland. But man, try reading the Korean LN "Dragon Maken War", you'll see that this level of bland-ness is relatively nothing. In Returnee at least, as a reader I can get a feel for the distinct personalities, at least in the characters surrounding the protagonist. Their interactions with the protagonists were funny to read, sometimes cute even. Our protagonist, after having been left behind by humanity for many years, sure does know how to joke!

Grammar: [4/5]

Translation of this story was pretty good. The level wouldn't match skythewood's translation level for Haken no Kouki Altina, but I found that it was at least it's leaps better than the active group doing the translations for Kumo desu-ga! (Those who read this will know what I mean).

Conclusions:

Would I recommend it? Most definitely yes, where for one thing if you're the type like me and love OP characters, who gain their powers through reasonable means. Considering that on this site I've been reading nothing but either reincarnation stories or "hero from the past travels XXX years later" lately, Returnee has been absolutely wonderful and such an enjoyment to read! And I don't know what other people have said the protagonist, but I love Yu Ilhan, he has always manages to keep a level-head and never manages to get arrogant unlike other OP characters I've come across. <<less

Seriously, I don't know why people give this novel 2 stars or lower. Read it yourself to judge if you like it or not.

ME? Personally, I love it. Always looking forward to reading more about the MC and his son. I do hope that this novel won't turn into a harem one, thought. After all, I really don't like novels that make girls into harem.

There is couple reason why this story was a Five Stars for me. First of all, the somewhat complicated psychology factors in this novels aren't overrate... more>> or underrate. There are a lot of hints and the MC isn't an outright genius that would know everything. The Earth that this story settle on have a lot more complications in the background then it was reveal but I like it. The story DOES NOT evolve around the MC, as most story does. I won't say that it DOES NOT evolve because of the MC's presences but it does not seems like it.

What's wrong with the hype and this novel's ratings?

It's super mediocre, average with a lame sense of humor if one can call it humor at all. And boring, and predictable, and sleep-inducing as hell. I keep reading in hope it's gonna get better (so many people can't be That Wrong, right?), but... it's really barely tolerable read.

MC is overpowered. He succeeds in every endeavor with the first try. No angst. No mistakes. Everyone is in awe.
...
Really?

Hey there, Garry Stu, don't wanna take a hike?

It can't be even called a parody or gag, seriously. Oh man. I wish I had something else to read but I'm so out of titles, so yeah... Hope dies last, they said. Maybe, maybe it will get better in the future, won't it?

I'd go 4/5 on this one. 4.5/5 wich is official average is also situational acceptable score.

I'm glad, that I was initialy repulsed by negative comments. It got me a chance to gulp almost three "books" at once.

EER is (of course) a story of supernatural, op and dense MC. He was left alone on earth for ten (lol) years with everyone else scattered in different worlds.

Our Earth changes, so do the common sense.

I love the way author sneaks nods and winks toward popculture here and there.
It's been a while since I laughed so much.

I wont give it full score, because it's obviously Desumachi/OnePunch Man kind of comedy, wich hallows story quality. And MC, despite being fun, is a "lovable idiot with sensivity of a brick", wich was tried to be justified, but still is a nope from me. Also he gets convenient sixth sense/luck, wich makes everything play out on easy difficulty for him. Plot Gundam, cus plot armor is too weak expression.

Still, a good read.

This is all SPOILERS, don't read if you don't want to. But, here's the deal, the novel is good, on varying levels. I just wish there was more to it that what it seems to give.

Spoiler

This has the potential of an all encompassing novel with a multitude of worlds that the MC could dive into. If only the author uses the things that the MC learned all those years in training except for the fighting techniques and handcraft/blacksmithing, then it'll be good for character development. The author could have put a lot of references here and there regarding literature and the languages he learned. I thought he could run hundreds of kilometers per hour and not just 60kph. Also, it'll help if the mysterious identity of god is somehow present in the novel and also the mystery as to why just monsters are appearing. Who is the main villain? It's already almost 30 chapters in and the monsters just seem like fodder to him at this point. Also, why is he not leaving Korea, what's so special about it? He could just roam around like he used to and basically grind like a madman. I'm pretty sure he knows how to ride a Jet Fighter with all the time he had. I want him to ride an SR 71 Blackbird at mach 5 speeds without G-Force suits so that he can go wherever he wants and grind whenever there's a monster that's way too overpowered for the people who stayed. The author's trying to make Korea special... tsk tsk tsk... All of the wasted effort to mystify the MC's persona all went into the tr*sh bin with this one. I'll still be reading it though.
