People get really hung up on the whole "150 chapters in and he always loses" bit.

People, read the god damn tags before making reviews and crying because you weren't expecting shit. Anyway.

Have you read Berserk? Yes, okay. Have you read Mushoku Tensei? Yes? Okay. Now imagine a weird mix of those two novels/anime into one. It's not as gory and depressing as Berserk, yet still retains some similarities. On the mushoku tensei part, it has romance and slow slice of life chapters added in it. It's all about struggle, dude... more>> may think he is OP but he isn't. Just think about god damn dragon king that one shotted our man Ruddeus who I hate with my life.

Now, aside from the Mushoku Tensei, I must put a spoiler alert here for the ones trying to make sense of what imma saying. So, spoiler alert.

Everyone keeps saying how the MC keeps lossing, yet that is mostly on three particular instances. He doesn't understands his problems and he didn't really focus on training after knowing about how the dragon king was holding the forth. Believing the Cross Army won't come to his new home any time soon. The only "real" danger that keeps beating him up are the Apostles. Yet, by chapter 150 it was only three times.

After escaping from lab, after fighting against the same apostle in their new castle, then after trying to hold them back with an army lead by him.

He won, many times. But people get butthurt because all the friends he made were killed once more... which, is kinda expected. ONE apostle was an army killer that he had to make a deal to let the others escape, sooner or later they where all going to die unless the story decide to do a 180 and make our MC suddenly powerful out of nowhere by unlocking some inner power bullshit. The first village already was a casualty in my mind when they mention how the village was close to the war zone. The moment the dragon king lost, it was obvious what their destiny was going to be. Realistic shit.

He got a EYE of god, yet to even UNLOCK some new powers he need to go through trials. This sh*t right here, I loved it. No insta power MC. No god like MC from the start. No "oh, I suffer and now I can beat you with a flick of my finger" bullshit. Just a underdog in a cruel world, forcing him to slowly but surely grow till the time comes for him to beat them back.

There is romance, there is backstories, the MC is called beta cuck by many... but he is HUMAN. He is still having empathy. That is the first thing many people throw away when facing the cruelty of the world. They want MC to just f*ck with his two teammates for no other reason than because they believe an alpha male should act like that. He wants romance, he wants friendship and love. He is no s*ave to his desires and doesn't want to lose those close to him.

The story is good, really good. Lives up to the tags and what it represents. It's literally Mushoku Tensei on the fact that the world gets darker everything it gets a little brighter. Always testing our MC. Yet grimdark enough like berseker in which everyone our lovely MC gets close to gets mu*der after a while by beings stronger than him. Yet, not as grimdark because lets be honest. If it was berserk levels of grim then those two companions fates would already leave many grimmacing. Really, perfectly balance.

But....

Still have its head scratching moments. The whole three times that the supposed brainwashed apostles let the MC escape. That sh*t right there is weird to me... I mean, Sariel I get it. She still retains some humanity but from what we understand, the others don't have that. They are just "acting" and still wear their rings in the head. Hell, it was a direct order for one of them yet she let him go? Weird sh*t right there.

Either way, it seems all readers who love "redo of healer" are here. Wanting MC to be exactly like that guy, to have gone through hell and then go full revenge all the while raping/f*cking all waifus. Seriously, some people just don't appreciaty some good stories that don't inmediatly go for s*x. <<less

Well, I have read many of the negative comments on the page and I can resume their feeling in being that "They don't have patience" and "They are too used to how Light Novels are".

With that outside, let's give the most objective opinion I can give.

Kuro No Maou is a pretty good novel with interesting development, multiple different and complex characters, and a great variety of abilities and powers.

It's a more darker and tragic isekai than your average, with characters dying and being seriously harmed from right to left, so... more>> a reader must be prepared to find out a favorite character can be suddenly killed a few chapters after its introduction.

The romance takes a pretty important role in the development of the story and multiple characters, being most of the time the conductor between the characters and their decisions, especially in later chapters.

The story also has a variety of ideologies which makes it quite common for characters to change their stances from one point to another, making friends enemies and enemies into friends.

It Mixes everyday life events, adventuring, Monster hunting, War, politics, and many others.

The world-building is an important element too in the whole novel, with multiple chapters dedicated to the explanation of different topics not directly related to the events on the story: These can be chapters describing historical facts, side characters personal stories and monologues, world elements like magic, construction, technologies, religion, etc.

The Protagonist and its companions begin being quite weak, here there is no cheat MC, and the power level of them grows slowly since there are no shortcuts nor convenient power-ups. The Strenght of the characters is grown with hard training, multiple efforts, and obtaining powerful equipment. So its best you don't go expecting a overpowered main character who defeats everyone in his way, you will get to see far too many looses before a win. And its quite normal since he confronts the strongest enemies from the very begging in the story.

This gives the novel a really slow pace in the developments of the principal events which makes it a long experience.

Kuro no Maou is a great story with a big universe and story elements. So it's recommended to tackle it with patience, hard will, and time.

I don't recommend this story for those who are too biased on the model of the Light Novels (They are shorter stories with a more direct and fast development), those sensible with harsh story elements (multiple deaths, r*pe, torture, etc.), and those who are only interested in the MC perspective (KnM introduce and develops multiple characters to a deep level, making it quite normal for multiple chapters dedicated to their stories and their perspectives). <<less

At the beginning of the story it is quite cruel because of the human experimentation and the escape of Kurono to another continent.

Leaving the holy war throughout the continent, and permanent rancor for the crusaders.

Kurono's natural ability is black magic, that is the basis of all his power and growth in power.

However, what most attracts my attention is that Kurono has the super ability to TRANSFORM girls to yanderes. (Unconsciously with his acts).
First with the fairy, then with the witch, and then with an angel. (Willing to perform an... more>> inhuman act for love xD)

If it's worth reading, I recommend it. <<less

This story is worth checking out. The main draw of the story are it's characters and world building, with tragedy on the side. Most of the characters are interesting and their interactions even more so. Torture disguised as experimentation and Yanderes are basically a cheat for making an interesting setting. The writing is quite good in terms of the Yanderes and despair, but is a bit lacking in other areas. This leaves long stretches of relatively generic isekai fantasy. I suggest you try it out and see if you find... more>> it interesting.

I suggest you read from one tragedy point to the next in continuous blocks, because the long stretches of mediocre parts pass quickly when you read them in bulk and allow you to get at the nice, juicy despair. <<less

Pretty much the only good point to this novel is that it's a fantasy setting, and the translators are very good. Beyond that, the plot is inconsistent, the bad guys are one-dimensional, the author randomly switches perspectives with no warning whatsoever, and to top it off, the MC is incredibly weak, to the point where he could be accurately labeled as a small fry. Building a loli harem is one thing, but having to be repeatedly saved/spared by the lolis who are all literally 100x more powerful than the MC... more>> is incredibly unsightly. I don't necessarily need the MC to be an OP Mary Sue, but at least give him some potential. Unless the author randomly throws in some instant power up out of nowhere, I don't even see the potential for the MC to significantly increase his abilities. Also, the author is probably an incredible chuuni. The MC always shouts the name of his attack whenever he uses his magic, even when the author explicitly states that chanting/yelling isn't necessary for the magic to work. All the names of the magic are also overly grandiose, almost to the point of parody. I also think alot of the tags are misleading. It might change with further chapters, but I'm already more than 50 chapters in and I haven't seen a single yandere, the plot also isn't very "seinen, " at least not compared to some serious works that I've read. Moreover, it doesn't have much of the psychological aspect either. Maybe they're confusing brainwashing with the psychological genre. It's really not the same thing. I can see hints of a loli harem, but well, I wasn't really looking forward to that part anyways.

All in all, meh. If you've got nothing better to do, then this might be for you. It's slightly more entertaining than daytime television. <<less

A refreshingly harsh variation of the standard 'summoned to another world' formula.

Kuro No Maou features a fairly standard japanese light novel Protagonist, Kurono Mao who gets summoned to a different world in the middle of being confessed to. What he sees when he wakes up however, is not a mission to save the world from disaster, a Goddess with cheat abilities for sale or a benevolent kingdom, but a kind of cruelty unique to humanity... The story follows Kurono as he tries to deal with that cruelty in an attempt... more>> to live comfortably.

As a result, this story has a more or less 6:4 split between slice-of-life-ish arcs and more threatening war and survival-related arcs.

Without spoiling anything, outside of the characters directly surrounding Kurono, the world makes a surprising amount of sense for a japanese LN/WN. Be it the glimpses we get from country politics, religious actions and especially personal motivations and actions of the side characters, everyone is simply following their own world-view without too much needless ill-intent or good-natured support...

The only sort-of exception to this is that Kurono seems to have a Yandere-attracting or creating aura to the point that even his equipment is yandere, and that when a girl falls for him their dedication to him immediately maxes out.

On the negative side of the WN, the actual writing and story flow is less than great; There is a lot of needless switching of perspective even in the middle of chapters, and there are quite a few strangely placed or even unneccessary chapters that tell the story of side characters. Sometimes it's used well - To explain the disposition and actions of the enemy commander for example... But most of the time these chapters just seem to be thrown in randomly and break up the flow of the main story...

It also doesn't help that the story flow itself is on the slow side.

All in all though, this is still a head above the general 'Isekai' harem stories simply by virtue of allowing for a world where the line between good and evil really should just be considered a question of perspective. <<less

Good for its genre and the yandere harem is very welcome. Overall its good but I'll list the issues, because if you can get over these few issues than the novel will be great for you, some of the issues may even be a plus for you depending on your tastes.

in relation to Tragedy:

Spoiler

Fake Tragedy, Main chars are generally immune and its just death all around him, in fact the mains have a good helping of Deus ex.

to MC:

MC is both underpowered and overpowered. His true enemies are so far above him its one of those, I won't even kill you scenarios, but he's overpowered when compared everyone else.

[collapse]

Also unfortunately classic Jap MC, though he is okay with killing for the most part.

So I’ve been reading this LN for almost 5 years now. The release schedule for chapters and is sporadic to say the least, but I’m not going to focus on that. The overall story is slow. Painfully so at times, and a real chore in the beginning. The MC isn’t overpowering, but adequately strong enough to call him a protagonist. The story likes to kill characters off just to prove a point that it’s dark and less for plot. The biggest reason why I still read this LN is because... more>> I like that the MC still tries to do the right thing and even in the most traumatic situations, and it’s a nice twist to see that even when he loses consistently. It’s not always entertaining for me to see the MC muscle his way through situations (though he does do this a few times) just to show off how powerful he is. I like that he struggles, loses, but gets better. It’s how often he picks himself up from failure that really makes me read on to see how he develops to the end. There is no real romance if you are looking for that. Overall I recommend this story if you like world building and can deal with a slow but developing MC that tries to do what he thinks is right in the some awful situations. <<less

This is actually one of the better "isekais" out there:

1- MC is not OP nor is given "cheat-like" powers or blessings. While he's not weak by any means, his opponents are literally god-slaying capable beings, so it takes actual work for him to be up to par.

2- People die if they are killed.

3- Yandere's everywhere.

4- Crapstatic world with proper world-building

I like the brutality, I like the magic, and I like the world building. It's a pretty awesome story

Stranger: I'm sensing a "but" coming.

And you are correct random stranger! What I hate is how the MC is treated. He's a nice guy, use to people being scared of him, just wants to be a hero an help people, yet despite his good intentions EVERYWHERE he goes people treat him f*cking terribly. If they don't come to some s*upid misunderstanding they treat him like dirt cause of his appearance and the... more>> rare time someone is nice to him they get slaughtered. Brutality. Or mentally tortured! It's like the author goes the extra f*cking mile to make Kurono's be utter shit. Kurono has been tortured in everyway imaginable yet still remains a great guy, but people can't see that and end up treating smug entitled douchebags better than him, like a certain group of adventurers called..I cant remember, I call their party chicken wing squad because I hate them so much I don't wanna remember their group name. Speaking of they are BY FAR the characters I hate the most in the story, next to the people who tortured Kurono first. They appear later in the story and do nothing but make dumb misunderstanding after misunderstanding and insult Kurono whenever they talk about him, despite them knowing NOTHING about him. Seeiously, they don't. They know nothing of his goals, background, anything, and they don't even try asking him because they're so f*cking conceited they think they're right. That, or they know they are wrong and refuse to speak to Kurono about anything because they refuse to admit they are being s*upid! I HATE THEM WITH EVERYTHING I HAVE! You know that a**hole, that group, in every story like this that serve no purpose other than pissing the reader off, and no matter how many times you beg the author to give them a brutal, slow death they still breathe? That's what they are. Like the "Cool Kids" in Arifureta or the classmates of Touka from Abnormal State or the Hero Party from Ankoku Kishi Monogatari. F*ck. THEM. In short, I love this story, but it makes me hate it. Until chicken wing squad dies horribly I'll probably always hate this, they're that insufferable. <<less

I understand the author's intention of making things real here for the MC and make him work his ass in order to not fail again. But repetition of the losses and the consistent sidetracking takes away the interest of reading his work. First of all, no one likes a loser for a protagonist. Just look at the Manga Major for example. It was pathetic. He wins the small battles but he always lost on the battles that matters and this novel is the same as that. Second, why change the... more>> POV to the people considered as the total a**holes of this novel. It just don't make sense that the author wants us to connect with them. That's just bullcrap! <<less

She have a twisted personality when she regained her consciousness or should I say the older Lily.) but this is a good Light Novel so far. Kuro no Maou is a great story, that isn't predictable and is undoubtedly a step up from other harem isekai's.

It is a harem, however things are very different. Everyone is the harem is.. Either yandere or guudere, I'm not familiar with the terms, but basically the romance is no joke. You actually really grow to like the MC, for his reasons and beliefs and struggles, and although he has his faults, he's not dense in the same way as other harem MCs, and his awkwardness is more than understandable.

The characters... more>> are 11/10. They are that good, I have never read a story with such well written characters, in some ways the darker elements of the story are necessary for this, but everything apart from that is done almost to perfection. If you like the idea of a darker, gruesome, nitty-gritty realistic take on the isekai genre with characters that have as much depth as actual people, then you should enjoy this.

In my opinion it's a 9/10, but with my current enjoyment of novels involving MCs that experience suffering, but continue on to eventually surpass it, it's 10/10. Do have some patience though.

If you have read certain spoilers that are affecting your decision on whether you will enjoy the rest of this novel, as it did for me (thanks PercherTM u bastard I had read animesuki to get over that) - for BL:

Spoiler

To those of you worried about the BL, yes there are a few scenes, however the only one that's actually descriptive has an author warning and can be skipped. There are also some complaints below about Kurono and the crusaders, and his relation to them in another spoiler, however that is a misunderstanding, I'll post a second spoiler below to be more explicit about that.

Warning 500 chapters in spoilers, do not read unless you have already read spoilers concerning Sariel in the crusade against Spada:

A good read, however, the pacing is a bit slow compared to other light novels and might put off those who aren't avid readers. The MC gets optimistic by nature but will get beat down by harsh reality over and over. Getting over that and trying to live a somewhat normal life is part of the story and if you don't like "beta" characters, you might not like this story.

Pro
-Many characters with their own personality
-Doesn't break own world's law (e.g. If a story say it's impossible to resurrect... more>> someone then it's impossible)
-Realistic and bleak
-Fleshed out world

Con
-The pacing in the story is very chaotic, the atmosphere also changes quickly
-Lack of character development in the personality sector
-Other than that one certain village, MC rarely has contact with surroundings <<less

1- In general / Plot
Well, first things off. The novel is entertaining, the characters are (usually) not flat, and the plot is just complex enough for you to have a sense of tension without getting tiring nor being too predictable (although some twists have slightly too much foreshadowing on my opinion). The lore of the world is interesting and it feels nice to read about the world.

2- Chapters
As some reviews have said, there are a few villain POV chapters that do not really add anything, and sometimes... more>> the plot feels too slow. The thing is that these only happen in the first few volumes (up to volume 5 or 6). For me it is clear that the author got (really) better as the chapters go on, and at this point, these early ""failures"" do not really matter as there are (at the moment of this review) 17 complete volumes.

Do note that there are some quite heavy moments (gore and r*pe), but they do not feel out of place and, although not always well handled, the treatment is usually mature. So these scenes seem more integrated into the plot, and not just some fan (dis) service.

3- Characters
They are enjoyable in a very "game of thrones"-ish way. Side characters (except minor villains) are well developed. The indecisiveness of the protagonist is (mostly) good for character development, and doesn't feel as being simply lack of planing from the author. One thing that kinda gets tiring is that, regarding the heroines, they all get increasingly predictable, not more than in any other harem genre work, but regardless....

Oh, lastly: there are many yanderes. It seems every other woman is one. Regardless of that, they are well written enough (if you discount the fact that most of them have to, in one way or another, fall for the MC).

4- Others
The translation is not great. Although I do not feel well criticizing voluntary work, there are some big English mistakes and awkward wording in every other chapter, and there are far too many translator notes. Regardless of that, these annoyances do not affect the general enjoyment of the novel.

On a personal note, what I think is the lowest point of the novel as a whole is how easily (sometimes) girls fall in love with the MC, and - up to a point -
Spoiler

how predictable it is that some of them will become yanderes, regardless of previous character development. It kinda makes the whole "psycho allure" of the yandere feel lost, as it is overused and the characters circumstances underdeveloped.

EDIT: Consider yourself warned, there's a major YAOI tentacle r*pe trap scene and the MC makes out with his cumstained lips. I've dropped the novel.

Take Game of Thrones, mix it with yanderes, Legendary Moonlight Sculptor, and r/atheism.

You'll end up with this.

So why did I pick those? First Game of Thrones: there's some noble status in*estuous themes in some situations, but even more than that, there's characters who just die off. The main character builds a relationship with them only for them to

die 50-100 chapters later.

[collapse]

I even faintly recall reading "Winter is coming." at one point.

I'm surprised there is such a thing as a yandere harem. The main character gets one, but is denser the the particle that led to the big bang, and foolishly doesn't pick up on the queues that his companions are psychos. This I found pretty interesting. I think yanderes are a bit more creepier than they are hot, but they are much more interesting than a simple romance.

In Legendary Moonlight sculptor a great tragedy is inflicted upon the main character. You might think "that's where the similarities end right?" No, they don't. There's one MAJOR point I want to make about the author's writing styles: they both focus FAR too much on insignificant, minor characters. There's a filler chapter about too many characters backgrounds. I've come to dread seeing a new character because apparently I need to know everyone's backstory before I can move on. Characters we don't know or care about. I'm currently on ch 307 of this work, and in the past 100 chapters I'd say about 50 of them feature the main character. The rest are filler chapters about other characters or things the other members of the cast are doing. This is basically just an estimate, I haven't reread the whole thing back to that point, but I doubt it's wrong. The current pace of the current translator is about 1-3 chapters a week and it's honestly disappointing checking in and noticing "oh you mean the author wants to retell us the same part of this story from another characters perspective? Woohoo..."

Why is r/atheism on this list? If you've ever talked to a religious zealot, they'll condemn atheism as evil. Similarly, if you've ever talked to a militant atheist obsessed with anti-religious rhetoric, you can expect them to cry about crusades, the evils inflicted using religion as a symbol of fear and greed, etc. That's basically here. It's an r/athiesm perv fantasia in which the religion of the cross goes from our world to take over another world and to do so will purge all non-humans and all their alternate religions mercilessly.
Spoiler

The crusaders come to the small village where the main character lived, and said "What are you doing? Quickly offer all the things of value, then bring us the humans living with you [non-humans] demons. They get to live as s*aves." They quickly kill the surrendering humans and 'demons' without mercy, causing the remaining to fight in fury, but lose miserably. It's also apparent that they torture innocents mercilessly to break them down into emotionless s*aves to God.

[collapse]

Another note: One major thing I don't like about harems is why they decide randomly to have boys who look like girls be in the harem.
Spoiler

It's clear the main character has been written out to be bis**ual, he doesn't care "as long as its cute."

[collapse]

I'm not sure why the author, as well as most well known harem titles cave into this trope. Are they trying to attract wild fujoshi? From what I've known they usually don't read these kinds of LN, so idk why.

The next spoiler is a big, big, spoiler. It's about a chapter that hasn't been even close to TLd yet. But it does help explain the mc's personality and what he is and isn't willing to do.
Spoiler

Apparently around chapter 500, he literally r*pes Sariel.

This WN is like an unpolished gem. There's some good basic elements in here but it lacks polish. The author put some good thought into the major elements of the story but falls short on the details. It's possible this is due poor translation but I'm not really getting that impresion.

It's enjoyable enough as it is (since you can read the translation for free), but it's not the best of its kind. If the LN adaptation ever gets licenced though you may want to get your hands on that.

Im sorry but I tried my best to like this LN but well, it was really really bad. The plot was so s*upid that it makes me want to barf. It started off fine since it was a back story for potential growth of the MC but as the story advanced in the next chapters, it was like the story itself was degrading the value of the MC.

The constant POV changes was so annoying since it was only a reminder of how much of a loser the MC is without... more>> growth and how incredibly powerful the enemy is. The somewhat romantic additive was creative but it gained too many plot holes. Too terrible progress and too confusing goal of the story.

I tried my best to move further but with the MC showing no progress and constantly losing, I got fed up and stopped reading. I mean whats the point of even reading a story with the MC having no growth in any way. I understand if that was the case if it was still from chapters 1 to 20 or even 30 but 70 onwards? Come on!

For fans of dark OP MC DO NOT READ THIS NOVEL <<less

so I made a account just to review this novel as well as point out one simple thing to future readers. First the later if you prefer novels with mc’s that can do anything or are op in some way then tho novel isn’t really for you (I’m talking about the now generic MC transfers into a different world gets power and becomes the strongest right of the bat type of novels). This novel is mostly for those who like stories similar to berserk or goblin slayer, or pretty... more>> much any dark story where anyone can die at any minute.

alright as for my review it’s a 4.5/5 it’s not perfect but it’s still pretty good, the fact that no one is safe (apart from mc’s party) makes much better compared to stories where the MC ends up saving everyone he/she cares about, here it’s different the MC (Kurono) has everything to lose his friends, his new home in this alternate world and even those he considers family, and this is what makes the novel great very few novels incorporate this into its stories as it’s mostly avoided like the plague or done of screen but here the MC sees it and witness it at times.

again if your not into stories like this then move on but if your curious about it the I suggest you read on as the novel is mostly just a simple introduction into darker stories that most tend to avoid. <<less
