Yamai Zenjirou is your everyday office worker in modern Japan. One morning, he suddenly finds himself summoned to a tropical world where dinosaurs roam the land.

He is told that this is the kingdom of Capua and the person who summoned him – its monarch, Queen Aura – wants him to marry her and leave his old life behind for a life of carefree extravagance as her prince consort.

The reasons for her offer are many and varied, but she needs an heir, and she wants him to be the one to provide it! If he accepts, he’ll never have to work again, lazing around in luxury with no worries other than securing the kingdom its next monarch.

Certainly, sleeping with the buxom beauty is far from a hardship, but is everything really as it seems? He’ll also need to give up everything he knows on Earth.

Is he ready to drop it all at a moment’s notice for her sake? And how well will he be able to navigate the politics, people and culture of this new world if he does?

I think the translated title didn't get through to many people. The literal title translation is Ideal Gigolo's Life. So when others review, spineless MC etc... what do you expect? Are you expecting a gigolo to slap stand on top of the country, conquer countries, or killing monsters? A gigolo is basically a man being paid for s*x or in this novel, for child making.

Fortunately, MC is not your scum type gigolo but he is sponger as harmless as Himouto Umaru which is also a sponger. A spineless,... more>> no ambition whatsoever, and like to avoid hassle as much as possible. He is summoned by a queen to become stallion in a world where patriarchal-ism is the norm. The world settings are similar to spice trade era with magic on top of it and inspired by Southern part of Asia (South East Asia/India/Gulf) and Europe settings. Many plots are schemed to overthrow the queen using him, so to preserve his sponger lifestyle, he has to do stuffs inconspicuously before it's too late. As the story progress, he cannot avoid some stuffs and even got harem pushed against his will.

Story wise it is quite interesting and MC is not all omnipotent like other novels where MC introduce lots of modern stuff to the masses yet. I put 'yet' because I kinda suspect it will be overblown in the future when the author runs out of idea or the story nears the end because some new characters are quite ambitious. I don't like the way author write story about some minor supporting characters for sake of future plot which honestly is very boring and forced. Yet the seems-to-have-interesting-back story side characters are left untouched. This is a pity. <<less

(this is my personal taste, and I will be spoiling the story a little, so please forgive me)

for me, the first 5 volume is pretty good slice of life with a little politic, but starting volume 6, the story take a dive down and I blame the author for it. Here's the reason

Spoiler

starting volume 6, queen aura treat the MC as a full chess piece and keep crossing his bottom line even accepting concubine for him. Even though the both of them already talk about what the MC want, but his wife just keep trampling it. She should have think first the solution that can satisfy both the country and her husband, but no, she just go sacrificing her husband left and right. But I also starting to hate the MC, because he just keep silent without ever try to attain his wish

The issue with kingdom building novels like this is that an amateur random webnovel writer isn't going to know how to properly write medieval politics. This is no Game of Thrones.

There's a whole lot of pointless padding and sh*t pseudo politics.

A very well written "slice-of-life." However, the man got no benefit out of the whole ordeal and lost access to most modern conveniences. I can't understand his motivations, which hangs heavily over the novel. He feels more like a plot device with the novel mostly focusing on his wife. His decisions don't make sense.

The best way to describe this and the contrasting reviews in my opinion is simple: Culture Shock.

Objectively speaking, the majority of the setting and characters are done rather well, however the application can be quite different from expectations about it. This can result in a considerable contrast to how one could perceive it.

Beyond that, this is an interesting take on a isekai soap opera of a story. Worth the read if you have the patience to adjust to the atmosphere I would argue.

This is another good story ruined by a 'bad' MC.

Seriously, the world building is excellent, the concept is unique and the majority of the characters are very much likable (except the MC).

This was a 5/5 until Vol6.

Spoiler

I am seriously starting to doubt whether the MC really is a modern person (lol). On Vol 6, he has refused to take concubines on the premise that it is what he desire. He is so averse to it that the author had to emphasize on that point multiple times. Most males would have entertained the notion of multiple partners at least once in his life. Well, unless he is from a closed of countryside town that has costumes and culture centered around monogamy, a town where most people have a very conservative outlook on the relationship between male and females.

This has seriously annoyed me. It doesn't sound realistic to me, which a majority of the novel was. The MC is 'unique' in a bad kind of way. No, call him weird. I'm not quite sure if he was a modern Japanese male or a 17th century devout conservative catholic. The MC's outlook on concubines for the reason of political gains is just wrong. I don't know how to say this, but even if the MC doesn't have a shred of ambition hasn't thought of repercussions of his 'SELFISHNESS'?

Frankly, I find it ret*rded even if he was dedicated to the female lead... *sigh*, okay enough of that rant but I just had to take this out.

i have to say.... the people giving this novel bad ratings are either mad at the MC because he's a passive wimpy typical japanese MC. well guess what, that's what exactly the title says: "The Ideal Sponger Life". dont get your expectations up and expect a very smart and cunning ambitious ruthless MC, because you wont be getting it here. there's a reason for the passive attitude of the MC as well; a political one. all in all, a very good slow paced slice of life novel. if that's what... more>> you're looking for, then this novel is for you. if not, then dont bother reading and ranting about how wimpy the MC is. <<less

It's quite the unusual novel and the writing style is quite detailed which makes it a bit boring to read sometimes.

At the end of the day though it's a story about a guy trying to stay out of trouble and procrastinating as much as he can with the technology he brought with him.

He is supposed to be quite intelligent but instead of using the technology to better prepare for the time it breaks down by at least making some basic technological advancements he lazes around all day.

I'm sorry but you... more>> have all that free time how are you not at least teaching a way to create glass or other basic things to earn at least a safety cushion to fall back on if your current pawn life does not pan out.

As he stands now he is basically at the mercy if medieval politics and we all know how that usually ends for Kings and the like.

Death from desease or decapitation.

I'll give one thing to the author the word does feel a lot more real than most light novels but the chosen path of the MC leads to a tragic end in any realistic world like this so we are basically watching a train wreak.

For one thing everything is so backward there so their magic must be as well with a little bit of research and modern science that he knows he should be able to achieve some things previously though impossible.

I'm not saying the MC will inevitably be super OP but a little bit of effort he should be a lot better and more knowledgeable than anybody else. Maybe it's my inner scientist talking but I do agree politics is unnecessary and it's good to attempt to stay out of it but not spreading knowledge and technology is basically signing your own death sentence. <<less

This is a feel good story.

The story is good and there is character development. The author is not shy to show some intimate moments. It introduces heavy insights on Politics. What I don't like:
It's a fantasy novel but the magical part is boring. I don't like the common sense of the MC and his lack of ambition.

This novel is about MC who summoned to be husband of the Queen that summoned him. There is some circumstances that lead the Queen summoned him but he fall in love with her and agree to her request. It was mainly slice of live story with magic and kingdom and the conflict is largely about collision of his value and his new world's value and politics surrounding the monarch. Unlike most other novel, the nobles have logical motive and action. There are not two dimensional evil but a normal human... more>> that act by their desire. The conflict here is realistic and relatable. It makes me like this novel. <<less

The story is well written and there is not much to add to the flaws of it because everyone feels the same way.

The issues with the MC tolerance is caused by japanese culture. And in that sense you my dear reviewers suffer from the culture difference shock just like the queen herself.

For japanese its actual a matter of course that you hand over your financial values over to your wife and only get some (previously determined by reviewing the fixed expenses) allowance/ poketmoney to spend for your daily needs... more>> like combini food and such. Its not beta its culture. Japanese man are weak to their desires and tend to spend more than they can afford because of their social ettiquetes. After work meetings (where they actually just drink and play) cost alot of money and if you only have 50$ then you will only spend 50$ at worst. But if you are drunk and hold all your money then its possible to lose your senses ending up spending too much money on s*upid things.

Japanese women usually take a step back in everything they do just to support the husband on his self fullfillment because work in japanese is known to break your body and mentality. By "perfect lazy life" it refers to that roleplay in a sense. He does what a wife usually does in Nihongo. For the sake of the familyhead. Yeah some points are twisted but its still not too far off because they do roleplay here. Queen as the ruling person in a patriacharic nation is a first aswell.

Back to the main issue. The political schemes get more and more complex thus creating many loopholes where it starts to show major flaws. The bloodline tradition is a big issue. The way they discuss things with only a few people just to create a new plot. (Sometimes it doesnt even make sense that they exclude specific people)

Now the biggest issue. The MC being a sucker of "course". He takes on many concubines and lets them play with him allways in the pretense of seeing it through and judging it as a necessary sacrifice. Its s*upid and rather annoying. I was hoping for a real development where the MC starts to take a turn from his wife because of it.

My ideal cause of action would have been right after the case with the twin country. At that point he should have used the forced concubine (that nothern girl) to think about his future. Only 27 years are left to stay in that world. The next time he can jump back on forth would be a big chance to bring alot of knowledge with him into that world. I would have liked it if he were to start hating his wife, aranging a contract to secure the bond between his children and him while leaving the position inofficially. Publicly he would still be the tool they agreed to but he would no longer serve as a representative or "pawn". That way the author could start anew by forcing her to rethink the methods. Make them fight for the relationship the author wants to create in a proper way. I dont mean to make them break up for ever... just creating a trigger to make things right. Author ruined the romance by being to political. He has the skills to write about conflicts but its all about "reading the air". In volume 5/6 he had the scene where MC and FL realized that they cant continue by reading the air (guessing the meaning of the words because everything is so vague). Its a japanese culture thing to avoid straight forwarded speech BUT EVERY japanese I met states this as a big flaw in their communications. Thats not made up its literally EVERY SINGLE ONE! They envy foreigners for being straight forward with their words. They just dont like crude words that are seemingly ment to hurt (which is a big flaw in western culture. We cant be too nice because we would be devaluating ourselfes).

In short. The MC wont change his attitude for a long time. I see that there are 12 volumes but I cant find them and I am not interested anymore. <<less

My two cents: The main character had 1 month to prepare for the "isekai", and wasted half of it going to WORK. He had limited funds, I agree, but not only he could bring more things by buying metal containers (that carpet was huge, he would plan for optimize that), and bring his car (his car was small), he could pack everything he had plus bought stuff on credit card (yes, blow the credit cards, get debt, so what? He was going to another world, it was a emergency, even... more>> bank loans and loan sharks would be ok, put that lodge he had as collateral, he won´t ever return anyway). He was irresponsible, he himself says it about lack of knowledge for guarantee safe delivery of his first son. <<less

I can never remember the title of this story. But I quite like the take on romance after marriage. The MC thoughts are mostly boring. When he finds out that the maids are there for him to screw. And he doesn't. Is my biggest dissatisfaction. His wife specifically hunted for him to have girls he could screw.

The pace of the story crawls. The politics are interesting. The updates well there done in the translators free time. And he does a good job. So don't expect the story to move fast.... more>> I actually have no idea how far this story is but I think the translator updates once a quarter of a year. <<less

I love easy going story, especially the slice of life type one..

But this kind of story, where the protag, without any kind of special power, just the way they are, still could influence people around them so much, is my favourite..

Update my review, why? Because It is worth it.

First of all, I love all Isekai genre (Other World), either teansported or reincarnated.

My best second genre is Magic, why? Because I simply need some fantasy in my life, a man cannot only live in reality gotta have some fantasy.

My best third genre is Politic, I love how we can learn about how the world works, a fantasy with a mix of serious politics like Risou no Himo Seikatsu. Politic genre teaches me that there are lots of points of views in... more>> the world, and I must try learning before judging or making decisions.

There are lots of these genres, why this one?

The answer is UNIQUE. Why unique for me? Because I never read this kind of reading, both in Novel and Manga.

How unique? Can you tell me, english translated one, which has a person who is married to the queen, and has a sponger life? Hardly anything you can find one, which piqued my interest.

Pro:

Heavy Politics, I mean every actions affect future actions and need to be considered.

Con:

The sword and magic part is not so exciting and rather boring.

The only part I don't like:

Spoiler

When the dragon subjugation part, the author try to drag it a lot, make it boring
