Swamp Girl! Is a gender bender novel. But it's not just that. Edit : Now that this has ended I can say that this is the best completed non-short novel that I ever read.

I do not usually give five rating but who ever that flooded this with 1-star need to be balanced out.

Edit : Truly deserve five rating.

This is not a spoiler it's just a little bit long. So for convenience I put it under spoiler.
Spoiler

The story is a bit slow paced. Even the author confessed the slow pace in his AN. The slow pace is concerning the progress of main plot but the subplot is always something that engage the movement of the main plot.

Romance is tsundere vanilla/bl cuteness (depend on your view of what define s*x alignment (body or mind)). It's slow romance bit by bit and it is not love at first sight cuteness overload. But if you cannot stand hetero romance better pack that stomachache medicine while reading.

Comedy is assured.
As has noted above by FallensWrath. There is huge amount of mood change. Imho it's one of the novel's attraction because it happens in irl.
The character each has their own motivation (or their own lack of it) with their own justification for it. They've got personality. Even your usual party member that usually just there to follow MC has reason to just tag along.

Edit : There is also a bit philosophical and psychological side that continue to increase over time.

The best of all is the translator, bitgray, and his translation. Bitgray update everyday consistently. Just check the chapter log. His translation is smooth and rarely contain any mistake. I honestly cannot remember any grammatical mistake or meaning chaos at all. It's pleasant to read his translation. He also drawn some fan art of the novel. (He said he already has "some".) Try to check the comment section for it. Edit: He already made a fan art page, some art are not there yet though.

Last but for sure not the least. Even one of the greatest attraction of this novel. Is the most eponymous swamp. Better check it yourself. It's better to not spoil too much.

The only apparent downside while reading is the mystery concerning Chris. It's never seems to clear up. When a thing clears up, it only brought further mystery. The good side is it's already completed so just gotta wait. Edit: Completely translated so just have to read to have your resolution!

It's a crime that the rating for this is as low as it is. I assume people see "gender bender" and immediately give it a 1 without even bothering to read it. By far the most notable quality of this work is that not only is it complete, but it is of reasonable length- not too short, not too long. The pacing is good as well and most importantly, it's obvious the writer had this plotted out from start to finish before he even started writing. This is a quality... more>> which is absent on 99% of the stories on this website and it's very refreshing to read. <<less

I saw the reviews on this story and thought it would be okay. There were some people complaining about the MC being too passive, but that shouldn't really be an issue that makes it unreadable. It is.

You get this whole explanation of the MC being an adventurer, delving in dungeons, doing mercenary work, ect., but the author doesn't do anything with it. At most you get a 'I've done adventurer work so I know this or that', but when it comes to personality it doesn't do/add anything. The MC goes... more>> from a bit of a stubborn fighter to total doe-eyed, useless damsel in distress in 5 chapters, maybe even less, and stays that way till at least chapter 46 (that's as far as I dragged myself through).

There's also the fact that his/her new body is said to be 'stronger' at the start, but it really isn't. He/She's weaker than even the most useless member of the party and never fights or does anything. He/She gets strung along the whole time and doesn't do anything independently past the first couple chapters and honestly is just infuriatingly passive... I'm thinking about whether or not I've seen a more useless MC before and am drawing a blank.

World building? Who needs that. A couple place names get tossed around, but how the whole place actually looks? No clue. I'm not sure what the author was thinking, but a fantasy world with no explanation is just plain boring. It's like, chapter X: dragons exist btw, that's why one's flying around, chapter Z: monsters are running around, oh yeah wait, there are monsters btw, Chapter O: Did you know there's magic too? oh yeah, I kinda didn't mention anything about it, don't worry, you'll see magic like 2-3 times in the first 46 chapters, so it doesn't really matter, chapter Y: there's a fortress here to defend against kingdom X, but the war ended before it get used, so it doesn't really matter --> ad infinitum, or at least the end of this story. There's no real big whole that gets explained, just a bunch of places that are sometimes connected. It's like a painting where you paint all the corners, maybe a couple blotches in the middle and then sometimes paint some connecting strands between them. What's left is a patchwork with no substance that leaves you wondering why the author bothered to name the places in the first place.

I saw someone talk about how good the side characters were in another review, that person must or, have reviewed the wrong story, or not know what a decent side-character looks like. It's just the average side-characters that sometimes get mentioned, but don't really do anything to add to the story. Well, I suppose they fawn over the MC, but that isn't really anything 'useful'.

All in all I'm disappointed, but I suppose I should've known better. Finding actual decent stories on this site is like looking for a needle in a haystack. To anyone actually finishing this rant (just had to get rid of my frustrations) : keep looking, the reviews might make this look like a needle, but it's just another piece of hay. <<less

The "girl" is too passive. He is supposed to have been an adventurer - but everything he has been doing so far is going with the flow, almost never taking initiative nor pursuing any goals. Find out the fate of his parents and sister? Contact friends? Examine his new body and experiment with his abilities? Don't expect that from him.

Hell, he doesn't even try to have s*x with the girls or that noble!

Very disappointing novel.

Okay so first let me just say that this has got to be one of the best translations I have ever seen, the format is clean and clear there is paragraphing and proper editing and the 1 release a day schedule for chapters of this length has basically made me profess my undying love to this group. Honestly you should read it just because of how awesome they are. However if you want a few more reasons I did actually write a review as well.

So I am not a particular... more>> fan of gender-bender novels, but even if you feel the same way I really recommend that you give this novel a try. It does everything you want and so much more, there is the confusion of the beggining of the story and the slow reveals about who/what/why/how as the story begins to progress. It doesn't grapple much with getting used to the new body "he" finds himself in. However the story gives you a kind of explanation in itself. Most importantly the story really considers questions about identity, about who each of the characters are. Not only the main character but even all of the supporting cast (wonderfully fleshed out a s they are) tends to have a hidden side to themselves, a conflict in their identities.

The writing is some of the best I have read for a light novel, not too much description and enough action to keep you going, even if there are occasional "filler" chapters, they contribute the setting or the characters development in a really good way.

If you want to read something interesting with great characters and writing then this is for you, if you like genderbenders its even more for you youll probably squee. If your just looking for some switched off writing like the latest I went to another world and all I got was a power to summon ti*s then this probably isnt going to do much for you. I am on tenterhooks with each chapter and can't wait for more. Seriously, take a few minutes out to read the first three chapters and you will no doubt make your decision. <<less

Please someone send help I can't stop reading this light novel!!!

Ok onto the serious stuff not only does this story have tragedy, love, comedy and betrayal but it also has PLOT! Oh and what a good one each part fits like a jigsaw puzzle. During one chapter I felt so happy for the MC then a few chapters after the author dragged me down to deep sadness. This novel is just too hard to categorize but if you like a good Gender Bender, Love, Comedy and Betrayal in your plate... more>> then this is right stuff for you.

In some parts the comedy is hard to appreciate since something sad happens from time. I don't want to spoil anything but in one scene the MC is depressed while another character is making light of the situation that had me laughing for some time. <<less

so I tried reading this.....i really did....

the summary sounded promising and so did the beginning.... but something I have been forced to admit after 28 chapters (which is more that 1/3 of the story).... so far it's been reallllyyy boring!!

I mean the last three chapters I read had like 3 things of importance happen... that too barely. Also there's almost nothing special about the MC compared to an extra character. Like he/she doesn't proactively do anything. No clear goals, or determination to do anything, not even any kind of self... more>> improvement.... in fact she/he is just letting things happen, feeling weird about the randomest things, ending up in awkward situations like a third rate drama and making them more awkward by overthinking things. <<less

F*ck I wasn't expecting the feel, fluff and man...

Let me tell you this, even if the other characters might be tr*sh, the main cast - Airi, Palmira and Chris are seriously well fleshed-out, realistic and super lovable. The character development is the one absolute best thing in this series, and if you want an awesome and balanced main character - this right here is for you.

Romance is well done I must say. The exposition and pacing can get frustrating because it's TOO. DAMN. WELL. DONE... it keeps you clawing like "WTF IS HAPPENING" and at no point do you know more than what the main character does.. so it seriously keeps you on edge. But really, it's god. damn. glorious. Serious recommendations to all, best Genderbend i've read in a while...

Holy s**t, I started reading this to satisfy my gender-bending preferences, not expecting much, but this thing ended with a BANG! Those who rated this lowly, I can only say. You fools. You judgmental, impatient, weak-minded fools. If only you stuck to the end, everything that you assumed about this series would have been blown out of existence.

As a fellow translator, the translation done here was top-notch. Main character is truly, someone you would root for through the whole journey. You would laugh, you would cringe, you would 'aww', you... more>> would cry along with her.

If you came here for some unsubstantial fan-service as some here obviously did, expecting Yuri s*x scenes (Seriously) ? Be prepared to be disappointed. If you came here for some light reading, well, don't get your hopes up. Honestly, as I said, I started this read with such light-heartedness in mind, but that all quickly changed.

If there's anything wrong about this series, it could have been even more expressive. Plot progression felt a wee bit rushed, some things were left unexplained, but all in all, we have flawed, lovable characters who are well-developed, booming plot twists.

It might be too much to say this, but having read Worm by Wildbow, which to me, was one of the best piece of literature you can find on the internet, I have yet to find anything that had such an impact on me for a long time after. Years later, I stumbled upon this, and even if briefly, it reignited my heart again. Boom. <<less

Story is your generic fairytale princess story for young girls.

All of the characters act in moronic ways, especially the main character, which is a literal doormat, hard to believe this was an adventurer.

Well, here is another surprising novel I can honestly say that it is deserving of 5 stars. For those who look at "Gender Bender" and decide to pass up on this novel, I will implore you to give it a try -- For you might be like myself and get hooked into quite the incredible read.

Swamp Girl! flows smoothly from start to finish. The characters are fleshed out well and the story has mystery to always keep you eager to read more of what happens next. It also contains just... more>> the right amount of drama as well as entertainment to keep you smiling a silly little grin at what you're reading -- or resisting the urge to skim-read because of the prior so you can see what happens next. Personally, I'd like to put emphasis on the characters. They feel like actual people, with actual emotions, and not just there as ornaments to make the story move.

For my parting words: Swamp Girl! Plays heavily in the field of understanding who you are, and the things that make you who you are. <<less

This is a really well written novel -- content aside, the pacing and flow of the novel is very good. Kudos to the translator for doing such a good job!

As for the gender-bender itself, I think it's a really interesting approach. It's original, and I don't think I've read many gender-benders where the MC is like this one. There's a lot of questioning and self-identity exploring and thoughts. One of the major themes is that MC-kun gradually (and unconsciously) becomes more and more feminine as time passes.

4/5. A competently written and complete story. The fantasy and gender bending elements are fairly standard, but are surprisingly not the main focus of the story, at least directly. There is an undercurrent of mystery and intrigue that ties into the strange title, as there are no swamps in this story. I would urge you to either read it all before judging or not read it at all. The reason being is that there is a substantial twist that will retroactively affect how you view the story and the characters.... more>> A fluffy Pretty Woman type story turns surprisingly tragic and a little bit horrifying.

Biggest criticism is that the main character started off with a very strong personality that shaped the story, but that seemed to devolve more and more as time went on. Even if justifiable, had they been more consistent and rational the journey would have been more palatable. What I signed up for was not what I got, but the story was ultimately interesting and thought-provoking which is all I really need. <<less

This story is one of the prime examples I hate female romances with a male love interest

I never uploaded my review onto this site. From here on out it's just a copy of my review on NovelPlanet.

So I've had this story in my plan to read section for a while. I finally read It and..... I dropped it at chapter 35 (5/21/18) If you are weird and want to be exact or just me in the future wanting to know the date.

There so much wrong with this. First I... more>> will start off with probably the most minor of them all.

The start Is done In one of my least like ways. It's told through an awful flashback. Flashbacks kill any and all suspense and offer nothing better then If the story were to start out with the normal explanation. I mean, Even though the Intro and how he got his powers Is bad. I think It is all the more interesting If we got to see the MC walking through a Dungeon and gets poisoned. Being able to watch as he In a panic drinks his only way to survival. Then as he realizes he's now a Woman. Instead of just being told what happened.

Chris (MC) Get's turned into a Women In a boring way. From the title alone, I thought It'd be something like the MC walking through a Swamp and some deity of the Swamp finds him and thinks It will be fun to mess around with (Hell, I'd love a Goddess character constantly messing with him throughout the series) I think this would be leaps and bounds better then what we got. It does kind of bums me that we don't get this.

But we got a really lame way of him possessing some chick or something after drinking some vitals of potions. This Is just so anti-climactic. Off all the things that could've been done, We got this boring way explained.

The chick he possessed was I guess an actual person before. I just find this unneeded. It just makes the story more depressing that this chick died than anything and now the MC Is just using her body. The story could've just had the MC's body turn into a Woman instead. Never been a fan of things like this. (If anyone finishes the story and It's something different then I thought then please tell me)

The moment the MC and the other s*aves escape. Two of them are killed and one even by the MC. Honestly, the story just should've removed those two characters If they're just gonna die off like that. Would also make the story more enjoyable for me at least.

The MC is also really... Underwhelming to say the least. He has no powers and can't do anything with a sword (Even though he used to be an Adventurer) I know, I'm the guilty one for expecting the MC to do something interesting like fight the s*avers or Orcs off instead of just running away. I'm a sinner alright.

Also, I can't help but feel that the Author tried being edgy as much as possible. This Is the type of story that works best as a comedy and not an overly dark and edgy story. Things like there being a torture room filled with skulls of past victims Are unneeded. This story may have been really good If It took itself less seriously

There's also a severe lack of drama In this. Drama Is something every story I can think of needs to be able to keep the story interesting for the viewer. But even the action Is boring and I'd rather skip It. There were some scenes I was thinking that the Author should've done X instead. Such as a moment when she first uses Magic after being tortured and really wounded. Have the MC instead of being fine, Have the MC drop from exhaustion from days of torment and finally being free or have the group of girls he's with finding the scars his body has yet to heal from his torture so we can see their reaction.

Just a side note of one of the last things that pissed me off about this. The MC got assaulted by the love interest and snaps at him. Yet the friends act like the MC Is In the wrong even though she was the one physically assaulted, While the dude got his feelings hurt. This really pissed me off.

Now for the worst part, I'm already getting worked up and I haven't even started.

The f*cking love interest is probably one of the worst I've seen In my entire time of reading stories. I'm not even kidding. This dude (Leon) Has no redeeming qualities and he and the MC are forced into this really weird and awkward romance that doesn't fit. This dude also isn't any prince charming.

Let me tell you why.

What do you ask a group of recently freed s*aves?
A. Wait patiently tell the person feels comfortable enough to talk to you?
B. Has the recently freed s*ave be surrounded around mostly women, Something that would help comfort someone with them being of the same sex?
C. Ask If they have anywhere to return too or any place they can stay?
D. Ask them to go back into s*avery, Once they obviously say "f*ck off" Then blackmail them into going back into s*avery?

If you picked anything other then D, Then congratulations, You know how to make a more likable character then the Author can. Cause yes, Really. He blackmails the girls into going back into s*avery even though they don't want to. (Albeit, It's to save other captured s*aves. But, Doesn't change he blackmailed them into It) He also has assaulted the MC twice and is just one of the most insufferable pricks I've seen.

Let's round up everything I can remember he did.
1. Not even a day after finding them, He blackmails them into s*avery.
2. Ask the MC to marry him for his own benefit and as a disguise because the MC looks like his former childhood love interest and he can't say No.
3. When MC obviously rejects. Force her down, While holding her by the wrist tell she agrees to your demands.
4. Act like the MC Is his property and gets mad at her for actually leaving his sight.
5. Once he realizes MC left his sight, The first thing he does to the MC is Yell and Literally slaps her. Not even Kidding.
6. Have the nerve to tell his guards to put the MC under house arrest after the MC reasonably get's upset after all his sh*t and snaps

I see no reason why the MC likes him. This just comes across as a story with the MC being trained into accepting Domestic Abuse. It's like the Author saying " Hey this dude has a d*ck and has shown at times, The bare minimum of Common courtesy. I demand you like this dude"

Honestly, If romance Is needed so much In this. Then there are three perfect people. The Two MC's friends and the Mage chick of the army. Panama (Some chick that Is a loli but is 20 years old and has a name that reminds me of the country so that what I call her) Is the best person. The MC and the Loli go together so well compared to Leon and the MC. I also love the Idea of seeing peoples reactions to a 20-year looking girl dating a 20-year-old looking kid.

The adventuring Is also really boring. Nothing of interest or excitement.

I was really liking the Idea that the MC and his two friends would travel around and be adventurers. That's something I don't see much, A group of girlfriends forming and making an Adventuring party and going around the world being OP. That would be fun to see and am bummed we probably won't see It

Overall, This story could've been great If It was more comedic and didn't have that god awful romance. Sad that It turned out like this. <<less

This story had a great kick off, action packed, decisive MC, great mystery about what exactly happened, a goal the MC has set for himself and tries to reach. But that's only for the first few chapters, then it just takes a whole other direction. This novel isn't an action novel. I would say it's more of a psychological, drama filled romance novel about a person trying to find himself/herself, what he/she is, and a place to belong to. It's about coming to acceptance of who you are while you... more>> don't know who or what you exactly are and coming in touch with things that contradicts with your own existence. Kind of like having an existential crisis. If you're into these kinds of psychological novels then this is a great read.

However, if you're not into that kind of thing and expected this to be one of those typical reincarnation stories then you're wrong. It's not like that at all, hence why you see some of the lower ratings. This novel probably wasn't what they expected it to be.

I'll say that it was a decent read for me personally, I enjoyed it. But there are some issues. The main one is that the story was simply too short or at least it felt too short. This resulted into a lot of things feeling rushed or unexplained. A side issue is that the plot just slows down after the initial kick off and only starts to pick up near the mid-end of the novel. These two issues combined made it so that the ending left me with quite a few questions. There was too much rush which left a dent in the world building, character development, character motivation, background stories ect. Which is a shame, especially for a story which tries to tackle a hard theme/setting like this one.

My verdict is 3.5/5, if it was less rushed then this would've been a solid 4.5 if not 5 star. <<less

It was rather underwhelming. I wanted to drop it multiple times as I read it, but I'd heard about a twist later on and when the first twist on the genderbending came I rather enjoyed it, so I forced myself to keep going. I did like how everything eventually tied together in the end, and the reveals were exciting, but I'm not entirely sure if it was worth it.

Long story short, I'm actually not very sure what I didn't like about the story. The plot was cohesive, there WAS a... more>> plot, the side characters were (though not very deep) also not the most annoying, and the translation was of high quality. I think I just unfortunately don't really care for the writing style of Japanese LNs.

The romance sat strangely with me as well, as there was a huge power differential and it was so awkward the whole time. ML was not my favourite, and the protagonist did that thing a lot where they stamp their feet and almost throw a punch, alluding to their hot-headed personality, but actually just kind of get manipulated and dragged around.

The last 10 or so chapters I really enjoyed, and especially the whole introspective look into "how much do memories make a person?", but having to plow through 60 chapters I didn't care much about to get there... oh well. <<less

A breath of fresh air after so many popular cringy isekai novels. My only significant complaint is that like most serialized amateur works, it could really benefit from a couple passes of revisions to consolidate and strengthen themes, characters, and narrative threads. Structurally, it suffers from a bit of a squishy middle with a strong open and a very strong conclusion along with some characters who ultimately end up being less important than they should be. However, given Swamp Girl's contemporaries, this is faint criticism that highlights how well thought... more>> out the overall story is. This is helped tremendously by the author's and translator's ability to write prose that flows and doesn't feel quite like the 'recitation of facts' style that plagues the genre.

This isn't an action-adventure story and if you're looking for the typical weak-to-OP story, you'll be disappointed, especially after the first few chapters. Its a rather slow burn about identity and meaning with probably way too much time spent traveling in a carriage. In my opinion, a good GB story should have identity as at least an important sub-theme, but for those with less patience or who come to this sub-genre for other reasons, this will be frustrating.

Overall, though far from perfect, this novel exceeds my expectations for translated web/light novels. I highly recommend as a palette cleanser when you need a break from "Oh no! I was reincarnated as a sexy teen girl, and now I have to beat the demon lord!". <<less

So I see alot of peaople talking about "MC too passive this, MC not doing enough that, MC supposed to be this, MC not fufilling my desire etc that..", well, all I can say is READ TO THE GOD DAMN ENDING PLEASE. Everything has a reason, and if you don'T read thhen you won't know why things are happening the way they are (alot of people wrote these reviews reading only to half or not even half of the novel, in which that was only the tip of the... more>> ice berg for the whole storyline). Also mind you, this not your typical Female/Male protagonist but probably a mix in between (hence gender bender), and truth to be told, I was a bit wary of it at first, it all came out fine at the end.

Oh and why I put on a 5/5 ?, because it deserves every god damn of it mind you:

  • Not too long but not too short (checked)
  • Exciting plotline (checked)
  • Do you want to find out whats next (checked)
  • Happy end ? (F*ck YES checked)
  • Satisfying end ? (ALSO YES checked)
  • Teary ? (I didnt expect it but yes also checked)

Amazing series. The only negative thing I can say is the ending feels like it is somewhat rushed ahead of when the author originally planned to do it, and some of the expanding plot introduced more to the middle of the story and kinda forgotton. That said, it's still a good satisfying ending, something I've found to be a bit of a rarity in Light novels... which often fail to ever make it to an ending. Characters are largely solid, and while the setting is not particularly original (Fantasy with... more>> a light typical JRPG tint to it, you know, 'adventurers' that do odd jobs for people and go to 'dungeons' for loot) It handles what it uses very well, and manages to keep a balance between the light hearted aspects and the dark cruel harsh aspects all the way to the end.

But that's as close as I will get to spoilers.

TL;DR- It is good. It's complete. You should read it. <<less
