This novel is a wonderful read and I highly recommend anyone to read it in its entirety.

What critics' reviews tend to ignore is that Hajime is indeed a human, thus subject to psychological damage.

The reason why it has the psychological tag is because of the traumatic stress on Hajime in volume 1, as he suffers from Marie Antionette Syndrome (which is when a person undergoes so much stress that their hair turns white). It is further detailed later in the novel that clarifies the severity of the mental trauma.

It is... more>> to be noted that the human brain fully develops at the age of 25, making Hajime's mental stability in severe danger. Hajime's significant increase in intelligence can be described as Aquired Savant Syndrome.

The reason for how Hajime does tend to contradict his words - making him seem rather hypocritical - is that Hajime's original personality had been preserved and conflicts with his post-traumatic personality.

When Hajime mellows out, it can be more said that he is recovering from the mental stress and trauma.

Anyways, the novel does take an interesting stance on the psychological tag and highly recommend if you have plently of beforehand knowledge on seemingly unneeded topics (r.i.p me). <<less

I really got in to this novel only to get to chapter 15 and find out that the translator who carries on the next set of chapters deleted them so I can't read them unless I go to a site and pay to read a translation that might be totally different going from what I can tell (web vs. Light). So right now my reading this novel is on hold until someone goes back and uploads the missing chapters or I finally break and read the light novel version based... more>> on cost. I'm giving 4 stars because I do find this novel really interesting just wish the people translating the light novel wouldn't harass those translating the web novel version because most of the time while it is the same story there are differences in them. <<less

If you see the author's name ("I like Chuuni") you should know what to expect. And this novel delivers it very well, with special moves and artifacts showing up left and right and a plot that takes you all over a relatively generic fantasy world and different types of dungeons. There are just a few problems with, well, everything else. Major issues include:

  • Description outside of combat is almost non-existent.
  • There's too much repetition.
  • Two major characters have literally no character development for over a hundred chapters after their introduction (Yue and Tio).
  • Too much emphasis is put on a girl with a 12-year-old body being sensual and extremely active in bed.
This means that, basically, Hajime's group will travel (with certain conversations) until they reach a town, there'll be one line of description and... more>> then a set of events and conversations will happen that you will see in every town. Tio is especially hated by a lot of people because the author treats her as a joke character... but it's the same joke over and over. Every scene she's in. And she's in a lot of scenes. Speaking of which, I hope you like the jokes, because you'll see all of them again and again.

All in all, it's a decent webnovel, best read one or two chapters a day at most after the first volume (to minimize the annoyance from repetition). There's no "chuuni" genre tag so I'll warn you here: If you don't like people shouting move names and holding philosophy discussions in between sword blows and edgy antihero protagonists, you won't like this. <<less

The thing I like the most in this story is the fact that even though all of his classmates got cheat powers "for free", the MC basically earns them by surviving some really terrible experiences. Later on those same school kids become jealous of him because they don't understand the cost he paid for obtaining what he has. The MC displays a realistic and (not so) slightly negative view towards the world while the story ridicules the stereotypical image of a noble hero.

There are some clear low points though. I... more>> like how the MC evolves into a balanced and well defined character towards the end, but there are some places where the story tries to forcibly make him do things no sane person would ever do, even considering the situation he's in. I can name a few exact points when I almost quit reading the entire thing because the actions of the MC made zero sense and it felt like the entire story had gone downhill in an instant. Some of the classmates also display behavior which is far beyond reason, but the story does somehow find believable excuses for these, although they are somewhat extreme. However, the story eventually recovers itself from the occasional downfalls and the overall image I have of the series is positive.

Also, the extras are almost as long as the main series. Their quality is very random but there are some very hilarious and well written stories in the mix. It's very nice that the characters are actually taken beyond the main story and their "happy ever after" is explored much more. Some of the side characters also get great spotlights during these extras.

Also, I have to say that I hate the character of Tio very, very much. I'd beat that character to a pulp but she'd most likely just like it. Fck that character. <<less

I don't know about the haters but I think this novel is F****** AMAZING!

I guess I can slightly (just a very tiny itty bit) understand why some people don't like this story but personally I think this novel rocks. Sure he is completely OP and has big harem but that just makes it all the better! His OPness is gained reasonably but he still has situations that are difficult for him and he almost dies several times. And yes he has a big harem but he not a classic harem dude. He has one and only one person he loves for most of the story and he actually denies all of the others feelings and tries to stop a harem from forming. Of course the harem still forms but it... more>> shows how different it is from most normal harems. Plus this has an awesome fantasy setting with great action good romance and just a cool plot as far as fantasy novels go. I have not yet found a Japanese Novel that I have liked more than this. I don't know about other people but for me this is basically the epitome (not sure if that is the right word or not) of what I want in a novel. Sure it could use some better translations but, honestly, that's about it. I would totally recommend this to any fantasy, harem, or OP MC lover out there. It is definitely my number one so far. It is just that COMPLETELY AND TOTALLY 100% AWESOME!!! <<less

Even though I rated it a 3, I still think you should give this novel a try until at least v4.

I'm not a professional critic and I'm currently only at v5 so try not to take this review too seriously but still, read it.

There 2 things I really hate in this novel: the harem and the MC's attitude. The MC's attitude pisses me off so much but I still didn't drop it. It was interesting and fun to read because I've always wanted to find out what happens next.

First let's... more>> talk about the story. If I have to say, it is a rather satisfying and interesting story. The MC was an otaku who was bullied, called incompetent, unpopular, and soft. There's his popular classmate who is very beautiful and talks to him all the time, and the most popular boy in his school, Kouki (was it?) Who is obviously jelaous of him. A magic formation suddenly appeared in his classroom, he gets summoned to another world and has a mission to defeat the Demon kin. His ability is 'transmute' and his class is synergist which is a crafting class in that world, which is apparently pathetic (or so they say). Later, he falls into the abyss because of an accident during training. He lost his humanity in order to survive in the abyss which also apparently turned him into a jerk, edgy kid but also becomes an OP motherf*cker. I'm not gonna type the rest of the story. Just read until v4, then continue if you want or drop it, because reading beyond that if you aren't even interested is just a waste of time.

Next we talk about the MC. As I already said, he was just a regular otaku who later becomes an edgy douche who thinks he's some sort of tragic anti hero. Some people may think he's cool as hell but he's just pure cringe. Some people think the same as me and it's mostly the reason why this novel gets lots of 1 star. They can't handle the cringy MC.

Now have you ever read your typical harem story? Well that kind of story exists in this novel. The MC eventually builds up a harem as he gets more involved with the girls which is bad. I'm sorry but harem doesn't fit this story imo and the harem isn't very creative either, it just feels common and nothing special about it.

That's all. I haven't completed this novel yet. The author is probably a newbie at writing stories because that's what I felt from reading this shit. I mean, a cringe MC and a harem? Yep, I hate it but still read it anyway to see what happens next. <<less

The only problem that I feel in this novel is that the harem seems to be forced. Every women who meets with the MC falls in love with him. Even women who show interest to some other person starts falling in love with the MC. This is even after he tells everyone that he only loves one person. Even then all the girls decide to join and make a harem against his wish. Also the dark theme at the start of the novel reduces and we no longer see the... more>> unique way he used to become stronger anymore. <<less

The first vol. was good not great but good. The issues start with the second and on vol. The MC went from a outcast kid on earth to a bullied kid after being transported, then he gets betrayed. Sounds like the usual start to a bad boy novel. The problem is that I feel he has to many goods that should outweigh the bads into becoming a revenge I don't care if the world burns type of MC. The first vol. the MC had a reason to live (pretty much... more>> make it out of the dungeon alive AND MEET HIS CLASSMATES), but somewhere in between he decided I'm a BAD BOY now so I don't care. And that's right when I started to feel disconetted from the MC.

the whole rail gun and revolver nonsense needs a in depth explanation on how he knew how to make those weapons. The revolver barley gets a pass but the rail gun does involve science more science then he should know.

The Hummer and the Harley bike... Vol.2 is just going the distance I'm guessing vol. 3 will have airplanes and trains. As the weapons I need more details on how it's made and how he knew how to make it, not a 1-2 page explanation. Those vehicles are a big part of the story

My biggest problem with the story was vol.2 chapter 2. The MC meets a bunny woman that needs help and this MC sees the monsters has his guns and can end it just like he did with all the monsters he killed like 2 pages ago. NOPE MC is a bad boy now he ignores her cries and tries to drive off. I spent more time reading about the bunny woman begging and the bad boy ignoring her request than if the bad boy just killed the monsters. WASTING MY TIME.

I dropped it at that point, but if you can look past these type of faults I guess there's a story to read here about a super OP bad boy MC with big guns cruising around with his harem then read on man. If not I suggest you read something else.

P.S. I'll try to read it again once Im out of reading material cause forums say that it gets better after vol. 4 or 5 <<less

As of 5/09/17, currently caught up with the translations, and I'd say the story constantly goes more and more down hill. First volume was great, dark premise and all with a fairly unique character, changed to a lighthearted read really quickly after that, which, honestly, didn't bother me. He gets a harem as he goes along as this powerful edgy teen, which again doesn't bother me as I expect it from every single Isekai novel anyway, so oh well. What absolutely killed this story was that as the story goes... more>> on and more people get added to his harem it becomes more and more of a boring dialogue between each of the characters that just gets worse and worse as it goes on. I get that its not supposed to be serious, but don't just stop the boss fight to have a fight between wives. It ruins the pacing and makes all the fights boring because all they are is the characters yelling at eachother or throwing themselves at our MC. I think that's fine, as long as it doesn't happen nigh every chapter as well as nearly every fight as well. I just get tired of seeing the same conversation pattern recycled over and over and over and over and... well you get the idea. Every chapter just started being a chore to read because all it was was the same dialogue written in slightly different ways about how one of his wives is fawning on him or fighting with another wife and its goddamn boring after you see it 200 times. <<less

Long and short, It's a revenge turn harem novel.
Spoiler

He relies on his relationships to regain that which he loses due to the horrible world he's thrown into. Can't say it's a bad method, after all if we take a step back it's similar to "Everybody else is a Returnee"'s method for maintaining sanity. Light humor and cute companions.

[collapse]
It begins dark and does stay that way. However the average reader will probably be distracted by the pink atmosphere and humor that covers up the dark atmosphere present throughout the novel.
Spoiler

Oh? The world is ending? Lets flirt a bit longer before we try and save it. - Because we honestly don't actually care about this world at the end of the day..

[collapse]

This story even includes an epic epilogue, to flesh out the characters that the author constantly - subtly- hinted were key characters. Filled with laughs and dark overtones, I'd give this story a 5/5 if it had more adult content.
Spoiler

The tone and the behavior suggested the potential but the author forcibly maintained a questionable R-15 rating.. Probably didn't want to make the plot degrade by adding Smut.. Probably

At first it was a good read, a few volumes later they were slightly off track, by the end of the story, the fight scene with the gos and the apostles were very good. But the side stories when they came back to earth were the best. I enjoyed reading myuu's adventure, abysgates' was hillariously cool too. I recommend you to read them till the end. Those boring parts were only fillers before the real fight.

I think what piss people of is the squandered potential of the novel...

When you start and give the impression of a dark novel the turned it into something else entirely, its bound to piss people off.

The author seemed to write the dark theme pretty well but went on and started focusing on things he wasnt good at. The novel didnt even have too be a revenge plot to be good, but its kinda ridiculus that the MC is helping the people that almost killed him. its not charcter growth, its... more>> simply just s*upid.

2/5 for it could have been. Would be 3
5/5 if he started as a romcom and a 4.2/5 if he. remained with the dark troupe. <<less

So far, first quarter is best cause MC don't give a damn to anyone. He just kill whoever obstruct him. Following that, the novel went down fall. All the flirting and shits on most of the chapters instead of having revenge and destroying enemies. There is like no excitement. 70% of the novel is more on female characters fall for him and flirting.

First of all, this is not and will never be, a revenge story. This guy got a survival mentality, where he only feels apathy towards his former classmates, not hate or anything of the sort.

The first two or so volumes are nice, great even, when you follow the true reason the psychological tag is on this WN.

But then, as if the author suddendly ran out of inspiration, the story fell upon every cliche imaginable, slowly eroding the good feelings you got before, using the same old harem jokes until you... more>> go numb and drop it. <<less

First of I don't know how many people will actually read this review. I myself usually skip past review pages or comment pages... Do to the face my opinion and likes are different from others. I'm not saying these people are wrong and that they shouldn't have the right to speak or share their opinion. but at leas try and be respectful about it and say that it's you opinion and not how the actually work is.

Now my thoughts on the novel:

First I stumbled into the manga and read to... more>> chapter 5 and got curious as to what would happen to him so I continued reading the web novel from there. I noticed a lot of people got quickly annoyed and the fact that after he climbed out of the Abyss they were angry of the girls that where following him. It was tag with a "HAREM" genre so that is a give. My annoyance about that was the way the author wrote it it was more like Yue and Hajime with tag alongs lol...

There were times when I was laughing and times were I was like ugh... hurry up and get to something good again but hey that happens in every story. I enjoyed the fact they he became more human even though if you push his buttons sh*t happens lol which makes it good cause seeing an angry heartless guy showing no emotion through out would be a little boring.

I see most people write a negative world thinking they are a grade A critic or something... but hey not everything is made specifically for you. I'm not trying to defend this novel or anything just saying it in general, I see it happen to others novels that I prefer more...

All in all way not give it a read, you may like, you may not only you can decide that. <<less

I personally enjoyed Arifureta but some of the complaints about it are very understandable such as how the MC doesn't stick to his own character where he becomes dark and apathetic but then all of a sudden he is risking his life for others but I don't mind that because in my opinion it shows character growth as well as how his opinions about things are complicated and contradictory very much like a real person as for the harem Hajime is very clear and concise about his feeling for Yue... more>> that he loves her and only her unlike the typical indecisive MC the harem came about as Yue kept chucking girls at him in an attempt to give him more people to care about as to mend his indifferent mindset and it showed visible results as he helped many people but this became a source of complaint for many readers but all I can say is that those people probably read through anyway right because one of the greatest pluses for this series is it has plenty of content most Japanese web novels rarely get translated past 50 chapters but Arifureta has as many as 133 and although slowly its still going so if you are looking for a story with lots of content, action and characters that have at least a little bit of depth I recommend that you read this series but in the end this is all just my opinion so all I can say is give it a go and make your own conclusion about it <<less

Well simply said this novel has flaws the size of Jupiter. Yeah I agree with most people on the fact that after vol 1 this novel falls in the mud, blah blah bad + all the flaws already listed by fellow reviewers (albeit a few being kinda biased and based on their own mentality) Have you people not seen the many contradictions after vol 1? Its as if the author made so much planning for vol 1 due to having a large amount of premade plans and it was really... more>> original (cos at that time this was made it was when the current meta of OP character was still kinda new, so in a certain sense hes a predecessor that carved out this new meta/path so really don't hate him that much cos due to him we get other authors who actually have constant development and planning to turn this trope into treasure), hats off for his 1st volume, though my theory is that his initial pool of premade ideas/plans ran out after vol1 and he started using many tropes he could find to fill in the blanks. Ok actually who cares about my theory, let me say this to ya folks on Novel Updates, I'm proud of you guys cos the people who actually come to this site are really high lvled and can sense all the flaws here n there (tbh most of u guys here are the cream at the crop that probably had training via anime/manga and reached this point), but then again I remembered when I was a beginner at anime there were some "so bad its good" kind of animes I watched and at that time I actually felt hey this seems good though there was some fuzzy feeling in my heart (which is probably my subconscious telling me "hey son this is garbage, remember to throw out the thrash") and after some more time in anime/manga u finally get concrete understanding of whats actually going on in the anime and when u rewatch that "so bad its good" anime u probably vomit on the spot and then u remember probably the minority which said 'this anime is bad' years ago in a review. As for you guys at Novel Updates the guys which spots the flaw/contradictions are the majority, ah how glad am I for having many elites here, my brothers, though there may be the minority which came here without being baptized and tempered we already know their plight cos we've been there once. So if you the minority are reading this I suggest u take the flaws written here and go back to the novels and compare and contrast with it to see how true the flaws are, and trust me when I said the flaws are the size of Jupiter and also trust me when I say u probably can't get the state of mind to notice the flaws when your in the heat of the moment of reading the novel.

Oh and btw guys when u guys complain about gary-stu/mary-stu or just because theres OPness in the novel your kinda barking up the wrong tree, its pretty much cos the author who wrote those got inspired by the "OP" meta and focused only on it and threw everything else out of the window, u name it, plot, world building, sensible logic, character development, sense of ego, etc. Trust me the novel is not "bad" because of any OPness in it, the OP trope is merely a trope (If you bring a pea shooter and I bring a machine gun to a fight are u gonna complain?), albeit a trope which I personally enjoy, the novel is "bad" because of incompetent authors, if anything is "bad", always trace back to the source and you will know who the true big bad is (yup u got it people, incompetent authors) <<less

I don't remember the exact chapter number, but I dropped it when MC was out of lava dungeon, some girl dropped from the sky... that part...

basically, as many many other novels it starts off pretty decent... but the story is converted into shitty teen drama at some point.... this story is one of the very early novels that I started reading so I did my best to endure as much as possible, but the sheer amount of creepy ecchi-romance sh*t got to me.... I gave up finally....
so, if you... more>> like romance, ecchi, teen drama... then go for it... otherwise don't even start it to avoid huge disappointment later... <<less

I changed my mind...

This novel is ridiculous. at first, it was pretty good we had some interaction between characters and we could get a feel for how certain development could be made... but, I don't know if other people have said this, but there is absolutely no reason that the 'perfect' girl likes the MC in the start. There is absolutely no chemistry between them. It could be that the girl is a sad*st because the only thing the MC does is stutter and can't say sh*t to the... more>> girl. Especially because he is afraid of her 'friends'. As we progress we get a great sense of what kind of personality the MC will develop into. According to his experiences and events he should be a ruthless mofo, who only has the single purpose in life to destroy those who betrayed him.

We are told again and again that the MC has a broken heart and bears no emotion/feelings. However, he contradicts himself before he even gets halfway through the labyrinth. He is sorta kind to the girl. Normal people would really have trust issues when they were betrayed like he had been. But, he is just cold and quickly warms up to her...

At this point, the author probably thought his fanbase was established and started the massive clutter of filler chapters/filler characters.

Trust me nothing really interesting happens. The twists are lackluster and doesn't even further the MC that much. His 'eventual' return to the group is simply pathetic.

First Arc 3/5 - the way he powers up is pretty interesting, but this system is never touched upon again, to such an extent.
Rest: 1/5 - The story is incredibly boring. tbh the ranking is because the author was too lazy to add any real content, it is mostly just fanservice/filler. <<less
