As I'm waiting for volume 11 in December, I figured out I'd write a short review.

This is, simply, my second favorite novel of all times.

It has a lot of interesting details in the world building, geopolitical and war situation, and weaponry. The unique completeness of the world building as well as a good amount of repetition for the most important elements allows the author to play around with items and situations in complex ways without losing the reader. We are given first place seats to what could almost be a... more>> detailed rundown of an actual ongoing war.

The author gives Tanya a believable personality, with such cohesiveness and detail that people of all horizons can understand her psychology and relate to her way of thinking.

The story poses many human, ideological, and powerful questions that it smartly avoids weighing in on, instead letting the greyness of the decisions and beliefs of the characters settle in, while it answers in depth to any technical question one might have.

The detailed warfare, from a strategic, tactical, psychological, social and technological standpoint makes for a good time, while Tanya's thoughts give us further depth, allowing us to take a step back.

You can feel, especially in the latter volumes, that it was written by a warfare nerd who does not necessarily share Tanya's opinions, but the brilliancy with which Tanya is written and her thought are laid down is what makes this, in my opinion, a masterpiece. <<less

The first light novel I've read on this site and without question the best one and one of the very few that truly deserve 5 stars.

The author has made the necessary research and effort combined with the brilliance of mind: the world is highly realistic, no plot armor or plot holes, the employed strategies and tactics make sense and the whole background feels absolutely alive.

Besides that the author has created a net of interconnected issues/topics that create the deeper core of the novel and are made of: free will, human... more>> psychology, analysis of society, the clashes of ideology and so on. Though some might perceive it as boring I absolutely enjoyed the fact that this explored some deeper questions.

Aside from that the characters are realistic as well and I can empathize with the majority of them, there are no flat and one-dimensional characters. We get an excellent insights in the thought process of Tanya and can understand each of her thoughts and resulting actions. Which also plays into the mixed in comedic aspects, that result from misunderstandings which can be very well understood when having the look from the side.

Overall the best novel on this site in my opinion and vastly superior to anything else I've read here. <<less

Its really good. Its extremely accurate. And almost everything in the story has a reason.

Spoiler

If we equate story orgs with real life orgs. A lot of the things that happened in the story did or could have happened in real life. But the story does deviate from real life at a lot of times (obviously, the Empire isnt fascist or at least I dont think it is). An example being (spoiler from volume 12), invading italy or in the story ildoa. IRL, germans had soldeirs in italy which is how they pushed allied troops. In the story, the pushed into the country, which isnt really possible considering italy is surrounded at the top with mountains (so no to tanks). But this is a fictional world so maybe the topography is different so still possible.

[collapse]

A lot of the things which you will feel should be impossible are there in the details,

Spoiler

Why is Tanya a little girl? The reasoning is there. Why are they attacking randomly, are they s*upid? Kinda, its more politically motivated combined with different cultures which caused the war.

[collapse]

An important spoiler not really relevant to the plot but rather understanding due to differences in adaptation

Spoiler

I saw a lot of people and even fanfic writers criticize Being X. Being X only did two things, send Tanya to the new world and then give her the new Computation Orb. A lot of misinformation in the novel is there, nobody knows everything and everybody tries to hide everything.

[collapse]

Major spoilers

Spoiler

An example of not knowing everything. Tanya knew that in WW2 the allies had cracked german codes but didnt expect the same of the Empire. But at some point she realized that it was broken, but she wasnt the first to reqalize it. Her superior officers are extremely competent and she is most definately not the most competent person in the world as is clearly seen after the first few volumes.

The character building is incredible. Unlike regular isekais, where kids (12 year olds) consider themselves smarter than adults despite the massive gap in real life experience, Tanya never calls others s*upid but considers that an option due to human nature. A vast majority of the time people in the story seem s*upid is different and altering information. A major example being the Norden scenerio. The alliance thought it was going to be a small skirmish which they had launched as a domestic political manoever for more votes. The empire who was usually militarily high handed considered that as a declaration of war. So it was more so different cultures so the response they gave was different.

Tanya at that time considers the alliance s*upid, but over time realizes why it happened. At first she questions her superiors orders, and questions if they are competent or not. But over time (post volume 6 I beleive) she starts realizing that the generals were extremely smart.

The story is also logistically accurate. The empire was prepared to fight a great power and had capabilities to defeat one and stand. The alliance and dacia were not major powers at all but defeating them along with the republic took a lot of supplies but till then their major concern was logistics not supply. But after the federation joins then the supply problem grew along with the logistics issue which only came up after taking over federation territory (which is why they began using federation rails supported by the puppet regime) 0

[collapse]

Its extremely nice personal opinion. Its a perview of a villain who isnt really a villain. The empire had reasons for everything they did. But they werent the only bad guys. The others (republic) did many bad things as well. The wars had gone well beyond inhumane despite the trying to follow international law on both sides. <<less

This novel is far, far too complex to capture in a simple review. It's deep, amusing as hell, and well worth paying money for. In fact, I've bought every one of the (translated) novels and have the next few on pre-order. The MC is intelligent and complex and lives in a realistic and complex world. Magic is interwoven with a WWI era analog-Earth nearly seamlessly and turn what might have been a mediocre transmigration story into a delightful romp. Tanya, while powerful, is not a Mary Sue (you actually meet... more>> another character whose name is LITERALLY Mary Sue in a soon-to-be-published novel... she deserves the name) while still being relevant and effective.

My recommendation is to read the first few chapters on here and then go out and buy all the novels. This is exactly the sort of story that we should all support... by which I mean with hard cash! :) <<less

"The Saga of Tanya the Evil" is a popular Japanese light novel series written by Carlo Zen and illustrated by Shinobu Shinotsuki. The series has been adapted into a manga, anime, and film adaptation and has gained a significant following among readers who are drawn to its unique premise and engaging storytelling.

The story follows a salaryman who is reincarnated into a young girl named Tanya in an alternate universe during World War I. Tanya is a talented military strategist and serves in the Empire's military, fighting against enemy nations. However,... more>> Tanya faces challenges not only from her enemies but also from the other characters around her, including her superiors and subordinates.

The writing style of the series is dark and gritty, with plenty of action scenes and political intrigue to keep readers engaged. The world-building is well-developed, with the alternate universe being a key component of the story. The political and military strategies are well thought out and add depth and complexity to the narrative.

Tanya is an interesting and complex protagonist, with a ruthless and calculating personality that is both fascinating and intimidating. The supporting characters are also well-written, with their own motivations and agendas that add to the complexity of the story.

Overall, "The Saga of Tanya the Evil" is an excellent choice for readers who enjoy dark fantasy, military fiction, and alternate history. The series is well-written, engaging, and has a unique premise that sets it apart from other light novels. Highly recommended for fans of the genre. <<less

The story is great. As a WWI/WWII history nut I absolutely love the story and I can really tell the author is one as well. One downside though is the author writes very long-winded paragraphs and you can tell that he REALLY wants to extend the word count at times. I swear to god there was actually something like this in the story

Tanya: "Okay troops we're setting off"

*insert 2 full paragraphs about something or other*

... more>> Tanya: "We're ready to go now"

*insert 2 long-ass paragraphs about something or other*

Tanya: "Okay let's go!"

*insert 2 ginormous paragraphs about something or other*

Tanya: "Are you ready to go bois?"

Me: "Holy jesus Tanya just go!"

Another downside is that the story is constantly at war. The story just jumps from battle to battle so most characters aren't really properly introduced. Aside from Tanya, and maybe the several other POV characters, the side-characters are very bland, even the elite troops directly under Tanya are just shown as "obedient".

Also while the military side of the story is just about perfect, the political side imo leaves something to be desired. Some countries would act inexplicably, probably to push a plot point the author wanted wihtout solid logical reason behind them.

I'm also kind of uncomfortable with the premise that the MC is a child. Not for moral reasons, but because it's kinda hard to imagine that this 12-something year old kid is climbing the military ranks so fast and gaining the respect of veteran generals. Specially when there's no real reason for it really. The author just liked aesthetics of it and just handwaved any other narrative or moral complications that may arise from it. I personally don't see the appeal but each their own I guess.

Over all though I still really enjoyed this series. Highly recommended. <<less

OVERALL SUPERFICIAL. Sound story structure.
Sound events progression.
More or less decent characterization (at least for the main character). Quite enjoyable read, but nothing more than that (if you enjoy psycho lolies).
