This should not be titled "true star", it should be"reaching the top by becoming a white" haaa, no it's actually alright if there's a harem and smut but can the author make the MC more useful? Not always depend on the people he bed I mean come on even when he's at the bottom he's a former number 1 like at the top of food chain why is he so incompetent and a big push over I understand he wants to lay low because he's still weak and small in... more>> food chain but he's a complete push over he's ok being treated as a product he's saying he's angry and piss off but really he's going to forgive them immediately ugh

I have many I want to say I forgot all of it I'm SO DISAPPOINTED I'm expecting a novel with MC going to the top of acting in his own power even at a bottom first and I'm ok with a harem and a smut but keep it balance an op MC like every one I read but oh man this is just drama, smut, push over MC, getting r*pe, almost, treated as a playtoy, product just so he can smile at them saying to himself I need to endure I'm at the bottom how disappointing is that? That the first time I read an MC as passive as him that I can't take it anymore <<less

Aish, this story. It’s Yaoi to the extreme, but I’m not one to care. If I had to give a Skip Beat explanation of it...

It’s like Ren Tsuruga died old and reincarnated in the young and depraved Fuwa Sho’s body and was currently going through a rise to stardom in the tone of Mogami’s OP rough ride to fame. Except everything is yaoi and there is a dark a creepily evil undertone to the entire thing with people selling their bodies and the introduction of a creepy drug trafficker.

Still... more>> good and awesome.

If you haven't read the manga, Skip Beat... it's fluffy~~ <<less

As a fan of BL, this is a blessing from god. There's plot, there's logic (real life logic, not yaoi logic). It was very well written with a cool headed, mature character. One of the rare novel where I really like the story because of the main character instead of supporting character, even if he's a little bit gary stue-ish.

The problem? None of the love interest is decent. Sure they fit the tall, sexy, rich, dangerous troupe. Their personality are just kind of shitty (lol). Another thing is I don't... more>> really get their feelings and strong attachment for the MC. It feel as if they simply fall in love with MC for plot sake. The only one that have chemistry with ML was Charles. I am not gonna complain much though. It's still better than 75% of romance novel out there.

Kill the Lights is cuter in term of romance. This one wins in smut ;). <<less

To be honest, this is one of the best yaoi novels out there.

I really admire the MC because he’s the type of character that won’t let things get to him. He doesn’t freak out when things go wrong and is really calm. *_* Can the MC stay single and love only himself?

Lol, because all the potential lovers in the story are really egotistical, arrogant, and self-centered.

Best MC EVER THO.

I personally dubbed “True Star” as harem, yaoi version. However, it was the good kind of harem due to the MC’s level-headed-ness and the novel’s interesting plot. Aside of it, there were rare premise, solid characters, and plenty hooks packed in this novel, made it stood out among its fellow yaoi and drama genre. Its showbiz setting was also narrated attractively as the background for the characters’ interaction. All in all, this is really a true star.

Simply overrated... The story gets too draggy.... If you have nothing to read, then read it... Like some reviewers have said the author made the MC and showbiz WTF....

1. The story gives you a notion that if you want to become a successful actor/actress its okay to use your body and then enjoy it as well while you're on it, which is exactly the MC is doing.

2. He's weak. He got swayed by the people who used him for s*x and end up falling in love with them (harem). He... more>> end up bottoming for each and everyone of them.

3. It doesn't live to its title. The scenes of him escapading and interacting with his harem is more recognizable than him becoming a true star.

4. Instead of a showbiz story (true star) since the author gives a title thats gives you an idea that its a journey and struggles to become a star but sadly the story is not like that.

5. Its like a path of how to make good use of your body to become a star while gaining men's favor on the run. It was emphasized all through out the story.

If you want a good yaoi showbiz talent story this is not for you. <<less

Oh man, this novel really shows the dark underbelly of the showbiz. The story starts off really strong however, I quickly realized that I had misunderstood the theme. I thought that the story, as the synopsis suggests will be a struggle of MC to rise to the top of showbiz world. But it is not. The LN focuses more on the weird and completely f*cked up AND sometimes forced type of relations between MC and other characters. The people applaud the pragmatism of the MC but to me it just... more>> makes me uncomfortable. You see too much pragmatism just makes it feel like the man has no feelings at all and this is where one of the major flaws of the LN is. The MC is described as a too much of a pragmatist and has a 'heart of steel' which just makes feel like a distant character and makes it difficult to connect with him. To me till now it just feels like 's*x for favors' part is what author concentrates on in the showbiz rather that showbiz itself. Its not that it is necessarily bad LN its just not something for me and its not because it is yaoi. I have read few yaoi before so I don't mind the yaoi part so long as the story is good. But the MC's thinking is way to pragmatic and makes him feel to distant and detached from everything happening around him.

Anyways, its worth a read. Especially if you like love-triangle-esque somewhat drama filled story. <<less

One of the most well-written yaoi novel of all time, Juxing's best feature is its main character, Feinnes Tang. Unlike other, Tang is very cool headed (as the review above say) and full of charisma. In fact compared to the semes, I find myself falling head over heel for him. There is not such questions of why he gets all the loves he have.

It's very sleazy. All the characters are dirty users, including the MC. If that's your type of thing, then read it. I read until chapter 53 (each chapter is short, like half a page) because of the good reviews saying how the MC is great but I"m not seeing it. The MC is laid-back but almost totally powerless since he lets himself be bought for favors.

The translation is very good.

This is such a wondeful read
ヽ (´▽`) /

I like the main character and the supporting characters as well. I like that we get some action (lemons) in early chapters and how headstrong and talented Fiennes Tang is as Tang Feng. You will have favorites in the guys that surround Tang Feng and will get a scene for each of them though some of them feels like a Bad END in a dating sim game. (I support the THREESOME)

I LOVE it when talent/ abilities from the previous life... more>> comes in so handy and MC brings talent and wisdom from an experienced actor into the body of a young handsome actor. There were mentions of r*pe, drugs, and prostitution as well but I dont feel it takes away with how enjoyable the story is. I am so thankful for the translators for doing such an awesome job!

Read it! You will love it! <<less

MC wakes up in the body of a young idol who commits su*cide after his unrequited love/boss essentially pimps him out for his own gain. The MC instantly adapts, fulfils the contract and plays along until his acting skills start to speak for itself. Since showbiz has always operated in shades of grey, he manages to attract the attention of said boss and various other men who are leagues away from good, but will spend the story revealing why they aren't completely bad either.

Celebrities have always seemed out of reach... more>> for normal people, and so rife with sordid rumours that it's easy to dismiss our morals and rationale when dealing with them. On this premise, the MC is so used to the shady workings of Hollywood, and is so desensitised and hardened after facing death and other struggles for most of his life, that he easily accepts every brow raising event that occurs. Even after being drugged, r*ped or kidnapped, he just shrugs it off, and since the victim doesn't really care, neither do the readers.

While the story itself is alright, all the events that come up seem unrealistic - or at least hard to relate to - while the MC is so calm and non-reactive that he doesn't really have a personality. He starts to open up to his emotions more in the second volume, but by then the impression is ingrained. It's an easy read, but forgettable and overshadowed by other series of the same genre.

Other Notes:

  • MC is the most comfortable around Lu Tian Chen of all the love interests because in the MC's mind, what he values him for is what the MC has the most confidence in - his acting. The others are based on (warped) emotions, which the MC doesn't really understand since he closed his off.
  • In terms of characters, it resembles Rebirth of Chen An more than any acting series.
tl;dr: It's readable but too shallow and unreasonable to be considered great <<less

Well, some reviewers are upset about how passive the MC is about being bound into a contract to be r*ped but that reallllly isn't the whole story. For one thing, his choice seem to be the smartest given the circumstances.

Spoiler

He was clearly sent there over by his own agency and the original body owner had such a bad reputation that he had no money and nowhere to go. If he ran, he will probably have to sleep on the streets and then still get punished by his boss. Also, Charles's home is likely huge and in the middle of nowhere which would probably make the MC's 'great escape' really awkward.

While it might be unbelievable that agencies would 'lend' out celebrities but 1) the agency boss is a shady man. At some point, the author stated that the agency was just a cover for him to launder money. 2) Some asian entertainment circles are in truth, linked to the mob. So the MC was in between a hard place and a rock; he just picked the option most favourable to himself.

Sure, a normal reaction would be to get at least a little pissed at your rapist but I do think the author 'argues' for the MC's case fairly well. One, the MC is... mature so he has seen quite a bit. Second, in his previous life, he had heart problems. So the MC had trained himself to keep a level-head at all times, cause you know... he might actually die of a heart attack if he doesn't.

After that one night when he got r*ped, the story mellowed out. It would be misleading to call the MC and his former rapist having a 's*ave-master' contract. It's more of a gigolo contract as Charles subsequently treats the MC like a boyfriend (buying him stuff, respecting his schedule, driving him to work etc). So all that outrage about 'he got r*ped yet he stayed to get r*pe more!!!' is maybe 3% of the novel cause really, he flipped the tables on Charles pretty darn quickly.

Anyways, overall I love this novel. Sure it has its flaws; the pacing gets slow and I don't really enjoy the bits where the author indulge herself excessively in the movie plots the MC act in but I do like how romance isn't the MC's priority. He got burnt by love before (see! the author explained! Albeit much much later.) so he decided to focus his efforts on his career instead which fits into his characterisation. I mean, to the MC, all the men flocking around him are really just brats lol (admittedly dangerous brats). I'm sure thats why he found it hard to take them seriously.

First of all what is with the story? I can understand this is tagged as yaoi and I am not a person who discriminates against a novel due to its genre. But its like the author is making the readers believe that showbiz industry is a place where you need to sacrifice your body to move ahead. It is a normal procedure to LEND an actor by his agency to other people. What is with that? and the best part is MC accepts it without any complaint WTF..

Honestly it does... more>> feel like I am reading s*ave- master story. The MC is a gutless idiot shamelessly saying he need to accept this because he is at the bottom of the food chain. In every sentence the author really tries to make the MC cute as well as weak (ooh.. look at that he is moving/ he is watching the sky/ he is swinging his legs...)

I really thought I will get to read a novel like Kill the lights with actors/ medias/ showbiz.. but it seems I am really mistaken <<less

poor guy just wants to act and grow his career and he's a little bemused at why these guys keep following him around but whatever, as long as they don't get in the way of his acting it's all good. Get in his way and he's not above ripping them up one side and down the other and putting them in their place. Especially once he gets to know them better.

a bit of drama in the later volumes and we get to learn more about his suitors, which make them... more>> more understandable if not more likable. My personal favorite is the ice cube rather than the dumb bear or psycho. Charles is too much like an overgrown needy puppy for my taste, and the psycho is so not my cup of tea.

i like the actual acting parts and the scenes for his movies but I realize some people may not find it as interesting as I do. This is well written over all and well translated, with a decent storyline and interesting characters. I found it interesting enough to MTL the rest, which is something I rarely ever do (last time was Unique Legend, which really hurt my head).

one of my favorite MC. I find him soothing after reading so many scatter-brained and painfully naive shou MC in other Chinese BL novels. <<less

Even if I wasn't biased, I couldn't find a good reason to give below full marks for this series. In fact, you don't need to be a fan of yaoi to enough how this story is written, because you will get dragged along in it's intensity before you have a chance to make such judgements. It's such a novel that you better make sure have enough time to read the next chapter, because you won't spot until there is no next link.

One thing I cam say for sure, this novel does not lack imagination. The MC a popular actor before he died of heart disease suddenly got a second chance at life. Woke up in the body of a tr*shy c rate star. And immediately got sold to ML #1 who drugged and r*ped him on their first night. And continued to stir up drama for his own entertainment a good amount of the time they were together. ML #2 the one that sold him to ML #1, after seeing his... more>> friend aka ml#1 get hooked on MC decided he needed to try and started chasing MC. And in a sort of way, ML #3 the creepy gangster, got obsessed with MC while ML #1 was showing him off to a known psycho. And the other love interest, Gino that never really had a chance I'm not sure why. None of these are good characters, not one. The MC is the worst, just plain tr*shy to me. He acts like he cant feel anything, even being r*ped multiple times, which I don't understand. He's supposedly smart but gets trapped by the s*upidest things. The love interests all make no sense for him. Ml#1 does nothing much more than s*x, I just skipped over those by the way, so boring and repetitive. Ml#2 is cold and calculating, and shouldn't even have been an option considering that he's the main reason the real tang feng died, and tr*shy c rate actor or not. He shouldn't have went like that and ML #2 didn't even care that his actions killed someone. Not really a ML but one of the love interest, Albert the psycho shouldn't even have been considered cause all of their intimate moments were forced or coerced. But MC finds a certain peace with him that he's never found before and the s*x was really good. And I dont get the plot. It doesn't make any sense, most of the times things are just happening to happen. Like MC living with ML#2 despite ML #1 already giving him enough money to buy several houses. The only good romance option ming chengxue was over looked because of some reason that didn't make any sense. In my opinion the MC always chooses to do things the hard way which blows my mind. Its not worth reading. <<less

It's good and all but I think it's overrated. I expected a story about the MC's journey to being a 'True Star' as the title suggests so I'm very disappointed.

Spoiler

Sure it was very interesting at first. I mean come on, a veteran Hollywood actor transmigrated to a third rate idol's body? Cool. I really expected, auditions, training etc. BUT it seems to mostly talk about the drama of being a very beautiful male being chased by high profile scumbags. It gets so draggy and almost like every chapters are fillers since nothing much ever happens. It gets so boring to the point which made me skim the chapters and only really read when there are interesting scenes. (Like he's finally acting and such, and those are so few) There's also the part where there aren't any really likeable characters. I couldn't really connect with the MC because he seems so perfect without any flaws. Then there's his personality, he's like a robot, nothing ever fazes him. (Not even when he's r*ped or about to be) The author also seems to be more interested in writing about bed scenes and scandals rather than focusing into making the MC a 'True Star'.

This is my opinion though, a lot of readers seems to love this story. Kudos to the translator as well, the quality of their translations are really good. <<less

Please read the tags, mainly the harem and r*pe tags.

I will start with the disadvantages:

  1. The showbiz part is only 20% - 30%. Yeah, I was cheated by the title and description... All these years I've read Chinese novels I should know to never believe titles and descriptions. Haha. So, what's in the story? The clues are the tags and cover quote, "He will change someone life tonight".
  2. Although I know MC is a good person, I can't feel the charms that make those MLs fall in love with him. The author more or less explained why 'tho. The charms actually the way MC think, as written in the description: "he decided to enjoy life to the fullest". To prevent misunderstanding as those words are kinda ambiguous (like, it can mean selfishness), I will explain a little.
    Spoiler

Because MC wants to enjoy his new life, things like r*pe, kidnapping, drugging, seeing guns, etc. he doesn't care at all. And this traits, which are easy-going and 'strong' are what MLs like, apparently. MLs see MC as someone who gives them warmth, color in life, etc. but I don't see nor feel this 'warmth' and 'color in life' that make ALL of them head over heels.

    [collapse]
Now, the advantages:

  1. Basically one of the best harem novels I've ever read [Note: I don't read many of them 'tho.. n_n"]. This novel is what harem should be (at least in my opinion). They know they are in [number] way relationship, they converse with each other how to make the relationship works, etc. It feels different with otome games / animes (Diabolic Lovers, Amnesia, etc.). Although both are categorized as harem, I feel otome is still one to one (today A flirt with Z, yesterday A went on a date with V, one week later A promise M to study together, etc. and in the end, either it becomes ambiguous with all of them or only one person dates the MC) and harem one to many at the same time (no, not having *** at the same time with all lovers. More like, they know the person they date dates others and they realize, have a talk with all participants, and agree with it. Umm.. sounds scummy in my words, but I don't mean that... Btw, do you get what I mean? n_n").
  2. Their characters are solid. They stay true to their basic characters design. MC and MLs aren't the same type as someone who for example cold at first then suddenly lost their IQ to who knows where and becomes a totally different person or once a smart person then suddenly makes many mistakes because of love (?). So, does this mean there's no change at all? The answer is NO. There're minor changes, but in line with their characters. This is a very strong point for me because I often find the characters in latter half of novels become brain-dead, love fool people. Full of lovey-dovey but their unique trait is gone and blur into 'any other people' or 'passerby'.
  3. Their relationship's dynamic is interesting. And funny. But this is in epilogue. The other four volumes are about the process / progress of their relationships and also about becoming a star.
  4. MC is a sound minded person. He is logical and know what he should or shouldn't do. I like smart MC rather than a silly MC or MC who needs their ML to help / rescue them.
Do you want to know how many MLs are there?

Spoiler

It's three. Can be more, but the rest is crushed under these three people.

[collapse]

The beginning of the novel is too much, indeed. One ML is really getting on my nerve and touch my bottom line.

Spoiler

It is Lu Tian Chen. As for the reasons? MC himself said it into his face *thumbs up to MC.

I mean, the body MC rebirthed into is really annoying, but this ML is just... so cold. Understandable as he is a person of underworld, but still touch my bottom line. However as time went on, this ML is one that understand MC the best. I was like "WHY??? WHY HIM?!" In the end he becomes someone whom I love-hate. Hahaha.

[collapse]

Btw, it is easy to MTL. The MTL version is understandable.

Honest suggestion, I think you should give this novel a chance despite the early chapters. I mean, if you can stand it...

But I also suggest that if you have a really bad opinion about polygamy this novel is not for you. I myself is a monogamy person. Although I don't like polygamy, I don't mind it (at least in this novel I don't mind the polygamy).

This will probably always be one of the best yaoi I've ever read. There's good plot with a moving story line and all the characters keep you guessing as to what side they will show you next chapter. Making you wait on your toes for the next chapter to be released as you didn't realise you had read them all Σ ('◉⌓◉')

Seriously you learn to keep an eye out for every character that's been introduced as so far none of them have been introduced only to be forgotten later... more>> as some other stories show. Even if you don't normally like harems you might want to give this a go as Feinnes Tang (the mc) is so lovable and has an OP personality making his interactions funny and fluffy especially with everyone else being so creepy and dangerous. The MC is super likable >.<

I wish I can read the next chapter already (ノ◕ヮ◕) ノ*:・゚✧

He's handsome on the outside and wise on the inside. Plus he's a reincarnated sort of person. So a 37 y.o. Man in a 25 y.o. Body. The way MC handle things is so wonderfully done. The harem members are cute and compliment our MC personality, the antagonist can just die :< so hateful of the antagonist.

Update: (2016-09-05)
I proudly announce that I finished speed read (MTL :p) true star! Now I can slowly... more>> savor the beautiful translation from giraffe corps. (Let me count, total chapter=317, with average 5.4 day every chapter, approximately 2.9 years from now). Up until the end, the MC is still likable, he live like spreading glitter everywhere, the story feels so glamorous and exciting. He got kidnapped, then rescued, then kidnapped again, truly living like in the movie! Something you can enjoy without having too much angst.

PS: reading the true star special mahjong story made me think about tang feng wearing only white shirt all day long *blush* <<less
