Description

In a Mary-Sue novel, the readers all liked the Devil Venerable, the second male lead who devoted himself whole-heartedly to the female lead. However the female lead only loved the male lead who abused her physically and mentally.

Readers: Why doesn’t the female lead like the Devil Venerable?!

Devil Venerable: This Venerable also wants to know. But what I really want to know is why I even like the female lead at all.

In order to understand why the female lead wasn’t attracted to him, the self-conscious Devil Venerable brutally interrogated the entire cast of characters from the novel.

Background characters: I have so many things I want to say but I don’t dare to say it to his face!

After obtaining the book, the Devil Venerable discovered that the book described the world he lived in. This book said that after he sacrificed himself for the female lead, the fourth male lead, his silent and loyal subordinate Yin Hanjiang, blackened and attempted to kill her as a sacrificial offering for his lord.

Devil Venerable Wenren E: Yin Hanjiang, this Venerable wants to know why you wanted to kill the female lead.

Yin Hanjiang was silent.

Wenren E: If you refuse to speak, this Venerable will cut out your tongue and have it with alcohol!

Yin Hanjiang: …

Wenren E: What the hell are you blushing for?!

Despite the premise of fixing a "Mary Sue" novel, this is actually one of more feminist chinese novels I've read. There are a number of important female characters who are treated with respect, even if they're the stereotypical heartless seducer who uses men to dual cultivate and thinks only of personal power, and the "Mary Sue" herself is treated sympathetically and is an important character.

This is definitely on the plot-heavy side, but not only is that to my personal taste, it also fits in very well with the CP and... more>> their character concepts. Of course MC wouldn't just pal around being sweet with ML; no, he's exactly the sort of person to shake the world in the process.

The CP is also nice. They gradually evolve from a distant and unhealthily devoted master/servant relationship where MC is almost taking ML for granted to a green flag pairing of equals.

Plus, this novel has a very fun sense of humor. The constant backstabbing and fighting of the demonic sect is very entertaining. Qiu Cangxue, the world's most brainless yet incredibly powerful cultivator, is particularly fun. She may be a side character who rarely appears, but I really love it when novels manage to make the world feel bigger than just the main couple. It really ties into the fairly well executed theme of everyone having their own stories. <<less

Really, so wonderful!

It's comedic, but also so insightful, both with its characters and in general. I feel like I've been tricked into a very enjoyable and easy to understand philosophy lesson. Was this a danmei or Philosophy for Dummies? Every character felt realistic and followed certain motivations. The plot is very intricate and complex, but written so clearly that it isn't hard to follow in the slightest.

And again, it was so funny. Especially in the beginning, there were multiple parts where I was wheezing. And then towards the end, I... more>> was touched to the point of tears. It's truly heartfelt, and the author managed to make characters who are bad guys that are wholesome without being whitewashed, at least not completely.

Speaking of characters, they're so well-rounded and interesting! Including the women, which is rare. Safe for both women and LGBT+! The romance is slowly but steadily built and you can watch the progression as it becomes a healthy, equal, loving relationship.

Truly a gem, worth a read! <<less

Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know took me by storm. It wasn’t what I was expecting at all. Initially, I was reading it like it was BL, and it is! But like what someone in the reviews said, it felt more like it was rich in story with hints of BL in it.

I won’t lie, I didn’t read the tag and was patiently waiting for some extras with spice LOL—but I think the story is just fine without it. I initially read for some BL and whatever cute ships would... more>> come with it, but instead, I found myself reading more for the plot than the romance after a certain point. I would read it for hours on hours solely to find out what would happen next.

  • Wenren E is an amazing character and is someone I enjoyed reading about. I felt that he had been well thought-out and created.
    • Somewhat contrary to the summary given about the book, he is a lot more chill. It felt he had some sort of kind soul mixed in, unlike how typical characters of evil sects are portrayed. He really isn’t evil, he is simply a man and a cultivator with hella power. The more you read it, the more you see that he is quite a lenient and loving man to the male lead. It’s cute and it really does make him more enjoyable to read about.
    • The way he leads his sect is also admirable. He doesn’t expect loyalty from his subordinates, just competence. He seems to make plans and takes into account how his subordinates are and touching on that, I like that the author didn’t make him some genius, or ambitious. Instead, he’s just competent and thoughtful in his actions. He felt realistic.
I already mentioned it, but the story really is rich. The side characters were well written and didn’t feel like they were just background characters. They had a lot of involvement and contributed to the story’s development consistently. It didn’t feel like they were just conveniently there to progress the story. The plot never got boring and it felt like there was a consistent purpose behind the story.

I will admit, there weren’t very many times Yin Hanjiang was mentioned at the beginning of the story, but eventually, you begin to see just how he is. His personality begins to show and you see that, in a way, he is an endearing person. You get to see him grow and become his own person while facing his problems.

It’s not the type of story to make me sit and contemplate how I feel incomplete without the book LOL, but it definitely is one that I will reread. I can’t express just how well-written this book is and I loved every second of it. <<less

This was, by far, the most exhaustive cultivation novel I have read so far. It explained the principles of cultivation in a way that made something so epical, so mythical, seem logical. And let's not forget the comedic breaks! Each named character has such profound effect on the plot that no one gets overlooked and you don't have to ask "who was that again?" because their roles are so clear-cut.

The entire time I was reading the novel I was looking forward to the explanation behind ... more>>
Spoiler

the FL's/divine energy's obsession with the original ML, and when I got to it I just can't help but sigh because really, some men ain't shit. He went so far as to make the entire universe about himself and his prestige without care or compassion, and while that might be attractive in a romantic interest, he only did it for himself and his own wishes. Honestly, he got what he deserves. I just wish they'd dispersed his soul because he doesn't deserve a spot on he queue for reincarnation.

[collapse]

By far, the "rod of bonk go to h**ny jail" is perhaps my favorite not only weapon, but concept. It made so much sense for something like that to exist but in the hands of its master it was just (excuse the pun) divine.

As for this novel's main CP... they both went through so much.
Spoiler

That metaphor about the mask especially hurt me. Baby boy could never be himself without a mask and I just hope that centuries after this, he can confidently show himself without fear that WRE wouldn't love him anymore.

[collapse]

I have so many more things to say about this novel, but my brain is exhausted after binge reading and I'm just so glad I finally decided to read it. Will for sure read it again.

Going through some reviews and I'd like to give my 2 cents about the things they brought up:

1. "It's boring."

It's essentially an existential novel where the characters develop while experiencing the world.
Spoiler

From the first time Abusive Romance was referenced in the novel it was already mentioned that the goddess herself came into existence and that's how the universe works. God of Annihilation showed what would happen if someone tried to change the very principles by which the universe existed.

[collapse]
That's the whole story. Idk, maybe people wanted more death and blood and torture or backstabbing, but that's not what this novel is about. It's not some dog-blood drama, it's about the universe, although the summary might prove otherwise.

2. "They fell in love too quickly."

???? They've known each other for almost 100 years and you still think it's too quick... Let me remind you of a line that stumped our main characters for a while:
Spoiler

Love is such that before you know it, you're stuck in its clutches.

[collapse]
Paraphrased from the English translation, but I hope that helps clear up that no, WRE didn't just fall for YHJ because he confessed, they've been cultivating (excuse the pun) their feelings for a century.

3. "The plot doesn't make sense."

I... I honestly don't know what to say about this review because????? The plot is literally an exposition from beginning to end? You don't need to think about anything because nothing's going to jump out to bite you in the ass as you're reading.
Spoiler

The plot is basically WRE working his ass off to keep the energies keeping the world in order from derailing and thus destroying the world as they knew it.

[collapse]
That???? isn't hard to understand???? <<less

Its okay. Plot heavy. Gong-centered. Painfully slow romance with a somewhat abrupt reciprocation from MC that feels forced.

I've actually abstained from heavy plot novels, I didn't know this was one of them. I also didn't know that it was gong centered. Though I did get a hunch halfway that it was gong centered.

For me, I dont like novels with the leading person as the main character. It just doesn't feel right to me (probably because I dont consume shounen, seinen kinda trope) so I lost interest the moment I learned... more>> MC was the gong (I was 77 chapters in but I persevered hahaha) .

From the start I didn't really like it, I couldnt get myself invested in it that much because it was heavy plot and the appearance of ML is small. To others this is good, which it actually is but for me not really. Couldn't handle it too much.

I like Zhongli Qian's serious bullsh*t though, it made me smile. <<less

Finally finished reading the book, didn't stop reading the Mtl until the end, and despite the grammar bonking my head I admit this book is one of the best books I've read in a while and one of the very few endings I actually loved! I'm not kidding the ending is just perfect and it kinda makes me sad that such a good book was over, although I'll read the new translated chapters it still makes me a little sad, and it's a good change to have actual decent female... more>> characters in a BL book, it amazes me that there is so much story with everyone.

Aaaaalthough the ML (Yin Hanjiang) annoyed me a little with his obsessive nature, I didn't hate him at all, infact I understood all his feelings

Over all this book is amazing, you wont regret reading this, it is slow paced (kinda) but it's all about the plot and character development, trust me y'all this book is dope! <<less

So, this was not what I was expecting (in a very good way).

I was expecting a comedy with a lot of fluff and a tiny dash of plot and Xian Xia.

But this was plot and heavy Xian Xia with a dash of fluff and comedy.

... more>> MC (you can imagine him as a Gong, a shou, or a switch. it's not really clear, and I love that) is worthy of his venerable title, unlike all the other demon venerables in every other novel.

He is, ready to die in a heart ot heart honest fight, since he knows the his spiritual energy will help other life prosper after his death. He actually, genuinely cares about the life of innocents, and controls the demon sect so that they can't harm mortals.

He's even merciful enough to not harm the soul of his enemies (since he thinks that a soul always have the potential to be better in another life)

But he's not some white moonlight. He treats every life equally. The life of an ant is equal to the life of a man. They are both life.

This novel has a very refreshing take on a cultivation world, engaging fight seens, actually well written female characters and 'good' and 'bad' people in both demonic and orthodox sects.

Alos both good and bad poly relationships. (Original Male lead has a harem but he's the only one who's okay with it, his wifes all hated it. The left protector on the other hand clearly cares about consent and only takes in men that are okay with the arrangement, even if she probably thinks of them as boy-toys)

Of course there are some things I didn't like about it but it's a 5 star overall

Spoiler

I loved Baili, and her acr was beautiful. Seeing her slowly emerge from her cocoon and carve out the bad influences in her life was an amazing journey.

But, I get that she is the primordial goddess and cultivates the path of indifference but her shift in attitude after receiving the divine blood was a bit.. too quick?

We been seeing her slowly change throughout the whole story and I loved that. That's why it felt like all the things that made her herself were stripped away in a single chapter.

I still love her and there were still hints of her original personality but she felt like a totally different person.

But maybe that's just me...

BEST NOVEL! Masterpiece!!

This novel is such a breath of fresh air! It makes fun of all the cliche tropes in stallion novels. All characters have real growth and development. They each have their own goals and distinctive personalities.

Yes, Happy Ending! Very satisfying! With all the mysteries explained. No unresolved issues.

... more>> This is one of the rare danmei that has STRONG female characters who play significant roles. All the female characters in it are powerful and no they don’t die out or only there for romance.

The love of the main cp is the healthiest, most supportive relationship you’ve ever read!! WRE and YHJ respect each other thoroughly, they COMMUNICATE openly, and their journey is to understand each other deeply even though they’ve already known each other very well (life goals, personality, even mood).

I strongly disagree with the previous reviewer so here’s my counter points if you’re reading and hesitating.

Spoiler

YHJ never suffered Stockholm Syndrome. No character in this novel suffered it! YHJ has never ever been held against his will. WRE saved him and brought him back to a private sect so the child can grow up. WRE left him to go to war, not exactly abandoning but just busy! The novel will explain later why.
I’m just going to point this out and say it’s WONDERFUL that WRE left YHJ to grow up alone for 10 years because there is ZERO chance for grooming or anything else fishy or creepy going on.

I hope you have stronger reading comprehension (than previous reviewer) and get that not only WRE but basically there are always reasons behind every character’s feelings and actions from the Abusive Romance script.

[collapse]

This novel sets up GOLD standard for how a healthy, strong romantic relationship should be. Only green flags! WRE and YHJ always support each other in everything. Due to straightforward communication, the drama and the angst do not get dragged out! No filler chapter!

Wish I can give this novel unlimited stars!! Highly recommended!! You won’t regret it! <<less

Dropped, I can't read anymore.

2 Stars only because the beginning was very good. Has a premise I've never seen before. The best parts are when they try and alter fate.

Spoiler
  • The worst part of the novel is the relationship between venerable and the sect leader. He takes him in when he is 8, leaves him alone for 10 years, then the sect leader starts having some sort of stockholm syndrome. He becomes infatuated with what seems like a father instead of a lover and becomes mentally ill because of this. Seem like the sect leader hypnotised himself into a grooming situation. I probably just find the tag Master-Servant Relationship disgusting
  • This might resolve later in the novel but it felt like everyone was just following a script the whole time. The primordial gods reincarnation was apparently from when I read, getting brainwashed by the person who was unaffected by mortal affairs. The venerable doing everything he can without knowing to fall in love with the sect leader. The moments felt contrived. It was like the author got very sidetracked
  • The venerable gives Bai her divinity when he thinks she's stable. Even though he doesn't know if she will just die again (has not tried to see if she will just get mind controlled again)
  • Just character assassinating Shu a bit before I stopped. She is was smart, but she tries to get the two strongest cultivators (one that has no match on earth even before he got a power buff) to seclude and take over the sect. You would have to be a bit challenged to not see why and how she does it could lead to some serious problems
[collapse]

I wish someone reworks this novel and either tones down heavily or removes the romance

First of all, I usually don't read novels with a gong MC. But I am glad that I gave a chance to this story. It is rare of me to give 5 stars. But this story was fun to read.

Like in the description the master of demonic sect finds a dog blood romance novel written by a female author. He soon realizes that it is not some tr*shy romance book but about their worlds future. It is hilarious when people look at the book title and misunderstand his taste.

After reading... more>> it he is confused, why would he fall in love with someone and even sacrifice himself for her. He is confused about many plotholes and "s*upid" things on the book. Still decides to help the protagonist of this book because he knows her true identity after reading the book. Also he wants to learn more about his world, about characters in the book.

The only problem is the ML of this novel (novel that he found) so he tries many ways to separate him from the heroine. Some of his methods are good but some hilarious because he has no knowledge about love.

Later he finds a second book which was written by a male author and it is a harem story with strong male protagonist. Here ML of the first book is the protagonist and MC of the first book is just one of his many wives.

Devil Venerable is not some cold hearted, calculative and malicious villian. He is more like a monk? He is really a good person who wants to protect people. ML, his guard is bit obsessive, but it is something that he has to solve in the story. He is not that beautiful and feminine shou. He is on the same level as MC. Strong, loyal and overprotective. So this story doesn't give that much gong shou dynamic like other typical danmei novels. They feel more like a verse?

Side characters are all well fleshed out, none is truly evil or good. They are just humans with feeling, jealousy and ambitions. I really loved the devil sect members characters. They're so fun and cute, life is never boring in devil sect. Female characters are very likable unlike some danmeis. First I thought I wouldn't like the female protagonist of the novel, but she wasn't just some braindeath girl.

I specially liked the ending. I am giving it full 5 stars because of that ending. It was well written, and then explained everything nicely. No plothole I would say. That book is not there just for the sake of this story. Nicely done! <<less

Forgot to write the review of this one.

Probably the best novel I could have ever read.

Wen Ren E (MC) is the gong/top of the novel. He's the devil venerable (smth like sect leader nickname). Before he get the "book", he appear as a stoic person (because he can't trust no one). After receiving the book that reveal the information of their current world, he now know that there's 1 person that's willing to die for him and take revenge for him (ML). From then on he took care of ML.

Yin... more>> Hanjiang (ML) is the shou/bottom of the story. He's extremely loyal toward MC to the point in the book he's willing to torture the FL and avenge his lord (and die for MC). He has unrequited love for MC but he hid it to the point even he himself didn't know that he like MC.

Relationship between MC and ML:

Spoiler

Their relationship is slow but interesting. MC once rescued ML from a pile of corpse when he become the general in human world to train himself. Since then ML see MC as his savior and is willing to be MC's sword (weapon). MC got the book because he's the rank 1 popular supporting role male lead from the book.

In the novel book (i forgot the name but it's something about sadomasochism?) MC get, ML and him are 2 of the supporting male leads that always help the FL (Baili Qingmiao). The og FL is a love fool for the main OG ML, still forgive him despite being a scumbag. In the book, MC died to protect FL and ask ML to protect FL. At first it's shown that ML indeed protect her and even reach higher popularity than MC. But later it's shown that ML actually is the villain that always use ghost mask to torture FL (like a pe*verted behavior). ML sworn that he will light a lamp for MC by using FL.

Ever since knowing about this, MC attitude toward ML change. He help ML to breakthrough, bring ML everywhere. At the fight when MC got injured, he entrust himself to ML (know what will happen from the book). ML sacrifice [something] so that MC can be healed (his meridian is injured or smth, I forgot). Which caused ML to be injured, when MC wake up he start to heal ML and even turn himself into blood demon (blood demon is a taboo). Since then their relationship get better.

ML bring MC to a place where the statue of general Wen Ren Wu (MC) is enshrined. All this time, ML always disguised himself to pay respect to the statue. MC never know this side of ML. When they get back to the sect, MC told everyone that from now on ML words/order will be on the same status of importance as him.

I forgot the detail of the rest but here:

MC fall into the sea of blood in the hand of that sht scum of ML I forgot the name which caused ML to go rampage. Since then ML took over the position as sect leader and have a heart demon in the form of MCs. When MC finally get out of the sea of blood, he saw ML drinking alcohol while hugging his robe. MC come to him but ML act cold toward him (he thought that's his heart demon). [Infamous scene] in MC's bedroom, they argue because of the rob (just ML arguing). MC already know ML like him, he told ML that he's still alive.

(Skip many scene)

MC disguise himself as Baili Qingmiao (og FL), he discovered yet a new side of ML (ML hate Baili so he acted a bit rough towards her) and think he's cute.

Ending: MC, ML, and FL succeed in getting rid of the scum OG ML. Both MC and ML then ask for a book from MC's subordinate (dual cultivation book), they went to retreat for a long time.

[collapse]

Note: I read this novel 2/3 years ago so some names and scenes are forgotten

The side characters here are written good, especially MC's subordinates and FL's growth.

Best MC's subordinate is probably the girl with purple gauze, good at seduction, and is funny (forgot the name). There's also another girl who's an elder in the sect, she cultivate in ghost path which caused her body to look like a skeleton. Later because of FL she turn back into human body (forgot the name). There's also the white hair guy (another supporting male lead in the original book), he originally isn't from the devil sect but later he got kidnapped recruited by MC and hit it off with the purple gauze girl, everyday his hair start to fall out because of the chaos in the devil sect (forgot the name).

I like the FL. At first I really dislike her but later on reading her growth really feel nice.

Spoiler

She's a disaster innate deity or something. The reason MC in the book and the current one help her is because of karmic relationship (she's like the mother?). MC try his best to make her see the scum og ML true face so that she can enter the chaos path and awaken her divinity.

Baili Qingmiao is also taken in by one of MC's subordinate (the ghost cultivator elder girl one) and make her as disciple. FL saw many things along with her. At the ending she awakened her power (that scum of ML is dead already if I remember) and went to travel (?).

[collapse]

Overall everything from the plot, MC, ML, the side characters, even the villain (the scum og ML and the other "righteous" sect) are all well written by the author.

Full characters despite the kind of short length of the novel, who go through good character development and don’t leave room for misunderstandings. Author gets philosophical about the nature of the universe in a way that is understandable, really enriches the reading experience. Side characters are a hoot, with personalities of their own that don’t revolve around the leads. The romance is low-key profound.

I was always dubious about the content since the summary didn't appeal to me, but after years of seeing people reccomend this and how it didn't drop from the high ranks, I decided to pick it up and I feel s*upid for avoiding this the whole time.

I haven't read a novel this well done in a long time. Read it in one sitting. It was genuinely one of the best books I've read - the pacing, character development, the style and type of relationships and their individual developments??
Impeccable.

This novel is gorgeously written. It's detailed and fully fleshed out and really made me feel for the characters. It has subtle undertones that weave through out the whole novel - no plot holes! No filler! All amazing!!

Review

  • MC = devil vulnerable = very daring, ruthless, kind, cunning, charismatic
  • MC is honestly so smart and he goes through a lot before he becomes who he is today. His backstory is really heartbreaking. He was the one who picked up the ML and gave him everything he wanted? Like yknow u have a rich dad but the dad dk how to show u love so he jus throw you all the money hopin you be livin a better life then him when he was young that is the relationship between the ML & MC before they interacted a lot more at the later part of the story
  • ML = Yin = loyal to D. Vulnerable, ruthless, kind of like a maniac?, strong, persistent
  • ML goes through a lot too his family all gets k*lled and he is thenonly surviving one which the MC picked him up = then started worshippin MC as his saviour & his obsession is a bit concerning but they solve it @ the later part of the story
  • ALSO YALL this is NOT A TRANSMIGRATION NOVEL
  • Basically the og book fall into hands of devil vulnerable and he reads tht bs novel and be like lemme change the DesTiny~ cos like the og one fr so tr*sh anyways so yes he did change WOHOOO VULNERABLE EPICCCC YOWWW
  • give it a try! Its quite good

This story's world-building is one of the best I've ever read in a webnovel. The characters' development are also good except of course the OriML's because he's a consistent tr*sh throughout the whole story. Those subtle relationship development between the MC and the ML is heartwarming. I liked the fact that those two went through a healing process and the author showed that to us. THIS IS GEM! I thought I was reading comedy but the Plot!! Oh the plot! It's simply a marvel.

The characters were fleshed out. They lived and they grow and the story ends with a wholesome tone.

I love love the MC. He's so... Benevolent? I guess, but it also doesn't feel like this character was forced to be the devil for the sake of the story. It just made him seem very sober.

And how the story progressed! It's a wonderful story telling. Everything started from how Renhe first got the book... more>> and end with how the book got into Renhe's hand. Everything comes full circle.

Finally, the translation was superb. There were some grammatical error here and there but overall smoothly read. A massive shout out for the translator for bringing up the novel. <<less

Absolutely worth all the high ratings, I have no idea why I waited so long to read this.

  • The translation work by mourningcrow is some of the best I've ever read.
  • The plot is fun and moves quickly, doesn't take itself too seriously, and has some good surprises along the way.
  • Wenren E is SO funny without meaning to be, I was hooked in the first chapter where he's reading the description of Baili Qingmiao falling in love and he goes, "Mhm, I understand. She was obviously struck by lightning, that's the only reasonable explanation for these symptoms".
  • The development of Yin Hanjiang over the course of the novel was so, so good. Delicious.
  • If there was an entire novel that was just about Qiu Congxue, I would read it in a heartbeat.
This one's going... more>> on my re-read list for sure! <<less

Hilarious, refreshing take on 'revising' a 'story'. No transmigration, just the in-book characters going about figuring things out as they go. Love how it's written and the overall plot, the story is packed full of content and I never felt like there's fillers. The romance is quite subtle - towards the ending of the story is where it comes into play. But regardless, the humorous parts of the story is very fun to read. I had a good laugh and enjoyed every inch of this novel!

The only thing I can... more>> think of is wanting more... maybe more extras? I enjoy the story alot, but I'm still a bit confused about why the protagonist would be so head-over-heels compelled to be in-love with the scum boy still. Anyways, it was a good read! Take your time though, it's a lot to digest <<less
