With the rising tide of steam power and machinery, who can come close to being a Beyonder? Shrouded in the fog of history and darkness, who or what is the lurking evil that murmurs into our ears?

Waking up to be faced with a string of mysteries, Zhou Mingrui finds himself reincarnated as Klein Moretti in an alternate Victorian-era world where he sees a world filled with machinery, cannons, dreadnoughts, airships, different machines, as well as Potions, Divination, Hexes, Tarot Cards, Sealed Artifacts…

The Light continues to shine but mystery has never gone far. Follow Klein as he finds himself entangled with the Churches of the world—both orthodox and unorthodox—while he slowly develops newfound powers thanks to the Beyonder potions.

Like the corresponding tarot card, The Fool, which is numbered 0—a number of unlimited potential—this is the legend of “The Fool”.

Isekai into Victorian Steampunk-ish SCP with some lovecraftian horror and a small dash of Cultivation

Those various genres are blended quite beautifully together. The story reads as a professionally written story instead of a fanfic, the quality is superb and there is no useless repetition

As the name suggests, there are lots of mysteries to investigate here. I do not give 5 stars lightly but this novel earned it.

Let me say this, the novel is good. But its really not for me. This is because of the main character, someone that I would define to be painfully kindhearted and annoying. The kind of MC (main character) that always try to save everyone, a hero basically. It also has to be said that most characters don't really have much depth to them too. The main problem is that 'Good' guys will forever be 'good', and 'evil' guys be forever 'evil'; this is because of a s*upid rule that the... more>> author put where every character is NOT allowed to change their personality or character, otherwise they may lose control. This develop in zero character development throughout the story, the MC's personality and character stay the same from start to finish. Even taking this rule into account, a person can't be completely good or completely evil. The author has made this story into a good guys VS evil guys story. Everyone that is with the MC (main character) is 'good', and everyone opposing them are 'evil'. Every person the MC confront is evil, there is no such thing as the MC having to fight another good guy or even a neutral person. People usually and realistically have conflict of interests, so even if they are both 'good guys', it doesn't mean they will never fight, but in this story this doesn't exists. Every person the MC fight is ALWAYS evil.

This is how the main character thinks:

"he's evil, he has committed heinous sins, I am going to kill him" or "they are innocent, I have to save/help them".

That's it, nothing else. I also have to say that almost every 'evil character' is described as a lunatic for some reason, and that neutral characters don't exist. You are either 'good' or 'evil'. There is no inbetween.

This is taken from another review, it perfectly summarize the problems:

Spoiler

It mainly starts becoming obvious from second volume. He sticks his nose where it shouldn't belong and it comes to bite him back. He then says he learned from it, but he clearly doesnt. He again and again does the same thing, but still, for the major part of vol 2, he restrained himself and gave up before delving in too deep in stuff that was unrelated to him. The sh*t really starts to happen from vol 3. I wont spoil the whole thing but I'll just explain a couple of events.

1. MC and some other random people arrive at an island with a ship. This island is only a stop so those random people get off to tour and have some food. MC also decides to do that but first does an divination; the result was that going to the island would be very dangerous for him. He then decides to not go. Then, he finds out those random people had left the ship, and guess what he does, he decides to brave the danger and go save them. A temp companion of his asks him why he changed his mind, MC answer was: They shared their meat with me; they paid for me [this was an extremely small amount that the captain had paid because he won a little in gambling]; they had cooperated with me[have no idea where this came from cuz MC was the one that helped them in a hunt, not the other way around]; etc etc.

2. MC was to board a ship. He already has the ticket to a ship sailing at 9 am. He then notices a few adventurers and remembers that there was something wrong with them[that they could be dangerous]. He then realizes that those adventurers were buying a ticket for a 10 am ship. From all this, you guys can already understand where this is going. MC burns his ticket and buys a 10 am ticket so that he can protect the 'innocent' people if something goes wrong.

[collapse]

Among the refined writing and good plot, this shitty characterization and MC with a hero complex like a japanese annoying MC just put me off. So much so that I dropped this novel once, went back and again dropped it. I really respect the author. His throne of magical arcana novel is one of my favorite ones. I haven't read any other of his so I cant say if he changed the his character style suddenly, but this has disappointed me; badly. I hadn't started this novel expecting an MC like Fang Yuan from Reverend Insanity[which is another of my fav], but I was at least hoping to see a neutral character; or at least someone who has deeper thoughts than just 'he's evil, he has committed heinous sins, I am going to kill him' or 'they are innocent, I have to save/help them'. This is not something that can just be explained away by not acting against your character. This is pure lack of depth. MC acts like a brainwashed person who has to 'uphold' the moral values and maintain 'justice' no matter what. Its just black and white. Evil people commits crime, good people kill them; thats it. Now, with all that said, this is a good novel and has a good storyline. So, if someone can handle such characters or like those types, they'll enjoy reading this. For me, I cant stand those types, so I am dropping it now. Maybe, I'll pick it in the future again but it wont be any time soon.

If you can stand overly-good characters, the hero that saves every innocents person around, even at his own risks, then this is for you. If you expect character development/growth, then, do know, that there will not be any.

Everything said, the plotline, story and background is really fantastic. But I can't stand this MC, it makes me want to drop at every decision and actions of his. <<less

A high fare, book worthy novel. Just needs some proper editing, remove the unnecessary bloat and you get the best Lovecraft progression fantasy.

It's almost unfair how this book embarasses every other novel in this website. No wonder it racked up lots of awards and hit cult status in China and gain a large following in the West and other Asia countries.

Very rich world, well rounded characters and cast, and the suspense/mystery keeps you guessing what happens next, it dabbles in a lot of themes but mainly on corruption.

My main gripe... more>> is the lack of character attachment and emotional moments; after the first book it just feels lacking. I never grew attached with any of the characters except for Klein and Captain Dunn. I think the author did a wonderful job with that first arc as our MC learns the hard way that his path only leads to endangering his loved ones. <<less

6 months later and just realized I didn't even write a review for my favourite novel on this entire site LOL

Pros

  • The plot. Everything from the little details to the overarching storyline is amazing. Reading this didn't even feel like a webnovel, but rather like a genuine, published story.
  • The world building IS SO GOOD HOLY CRAP. its one of those series that, only after multiple read-throughs do you notice that there is foreshadowing for major events hidden in the historical myths and legends that are described at the very beginning of the story
  • Characters are a solid 10/10. Some quick background, the story follows the MC and a group of people from differing backgrounds called the "Tarot club". The characters and their development are so well written that literally every single one of the tarot club members are capable of being their own MC.
  • The challenges that the MC faces are genuinely difficult. Also his enemies actually have an IQ. Pretty sure everyone has monocle PTSD after finishing... read if you wanna know what I mean ;)
  • Did I mention comedy? like legitimately funny moments and running jokes?? (IKR??? HOW CAN SOMETHING BE SO GOOD AT EVERYTHING????)
?

  • Slow start. The entire first volume (so like ~120 chapters) is only a prequel to the actual action. tbh personally, I actually really liked this pacing (didn't think it was boring) but I've seen a lot of complaints about it so I'll mention it as a warning
    • speaking of this though, id advise those who are looking at reviews to check if the poster has at least read a bit more than the first volume. lowkey feel bad for those who dropped early cause TRUST ME EVERYTHING AFTER WARDS IS JUST PURE EPICNESS
  • a lottt of lore
Cons

  • Your expectations will increase substantially after finishing and it becomes increasingly difficult to find and enjoy another series
Overall, best thing I've ever seen. Read at your own risk though, it's been half a year and I'm still stuck in this hell-hole.

This is the best Chinese novel I have read till now. MC isn't dumb and cruel who can kills everyone without blinking (They feels like Savage and wild animal to me). Also isn't dumb enough to let anyone who mess with him too much go. Just because MC gets powerful he doesn't thinks of others as ants (90% Chinese novels MC does). The reason I like this MC the most because of his lampooning😁😁😁. Hmmm the novel has a unique power system where you can't get stronger just sleeping... more>> in a cave. None of the characters are dumb they have their own life and dreams. Also it isn't like other Chinese sh!tty novel where every women falls in love with MC (like there's no other man on the planet) I feel them fu*king annoying. The world building is my favorite because it isn't like other Chinese novels where the world is like strength rules all.

But the only thing I didn't like was the ending (Cause it didn't felt fulfilling) <<less

  • A story that is an absolute gem, one that I will definitely find myself re-reading again in the future despite re-reading it for three times now. The story at first is a bit slow, but when you get past the 200 chapters, you'll miss that slow-paced story alot.

Most characters are likeable, and the worldbuilding is great.

The only thing I really dislike about this is Audrey Hall. She advances faster than those who has factions backing them like for example, Cattleya (Admiral of Stars), which to me just doesn't make sense. Klein clearly gave her mysticism knowledge that's more than enough for her to digest the potion of Sequence 4, yet she only advances to Sequence 3 at the same time as Audrey, which became a demigod later than her.

Audrey is also really kind, and is so pretty that even demonesses can't match with her (which makes no sense to me, since clearly a demoness should have way more charm), and is basically almost a mary sue.

The author writes about her alot and even the most pointless interactions with her father or something is written, and yet the other characters don't get such things, despite the fact that their backstories or backgrounds are clearly much more interesting than a noble lady that basically had no burdens in her life.

It was definitely a journey. There were so many ups and downs, but overall I really loved the characters. What they experienced, who they cared about, their struggles. ... more>>
Spoiler

One of my favorite characters was Captain Dunn. He was one of the emotional bonds that allowed Klein to grow and identify as someone part of that new world. He allowed him to slowly came to terms with being Klein, and not just a transmigrator taking over someone's body. And for the brief moments the Captain appears throughout the later portions of the novel, that emotional connection never ends.

[collapse]

Even though Klein does show an extreme learning curve and raises his "sequence/power level" very quickly compared to the other inhabitants of the world, the abilities of the different types of Beyonders is really varied. So overall, Klein almost always has a difficult fight, requiring really convoluted battle strategies to win. The battles in this novel are really exciting, and his wins don't feel cheap.

There was one thing that I did feel like it was sometimes difficult to read through.
Spoiler

There are moments where it's pretty much just exposition. Basically at the beginning of every Monday meeting, Klein reads the diary pages. After about 300 chapters in, I couldn't help but start to skim through those chapters. At times, there could be 2-3 chapters which are just diary information. It can be really tempting to just skip through those and go back to the action. Also, at the later chapters, there's a lot of talking between certain characters to explain the history and some of the mysteries of the world which can go for multiple chapters, which can also be difficult to slog through. Definitely don't give up reading just for this!

[collapse]

I did have a lot of mixed feelings about the ending, since I felt like it tied itself up really well, but I overall wasn't completely satisfied.
Spoiler

All the questions were answered, the history was all explained, everyone's future paths were all laid out nicely, but I was really left wanting more about Klein himself. Still felt like it was a bit of a cliffhanger...

All hail the author for that one of a kind immersive fantasy world and amazing lores!!! It was a roller coaster reading adventure and every chapter is worth it!
Spoiler

The story of Nighthawk Klein introduced me with the Beyonders life and left me in tears at the end. The crime solving journey of Detective Moriarty got me reading non-stop for clues. The adventures of mad Sparrow and the comedic Blazing made me want to travel to the sea again.

[collapse]

There is clearly no romance in it, but I find the relationship of Joker/Harley Quinn (Joker's Psychiatrist) quite endearing. Lol.
#TheWorldNeedsJustice

The author is not that creative on names tho.. I'm fine with it.. Until.. Ed Sheeran.. Why was my favorite bard's name bestowed on a scumbag dogsh*t side character?!

Hand down the most spectacurlar Chinese web novel. Just read it and you will understand why it get such a high rating. Many reviewer have said already so I will only mentions 3 things that shine in this novel.

1. The world feels real and full of mysteries to explore.

2. There are no meaningless expositions. This neither enrich the world or foresadowning later chapter.

3. Magic system is original and has nothing to do with cultivation or gaming system (can't believe I could say this in a Chinese novel).

This novel is seriously good. As far as I am concerned, this is THE number 1 Chinese novel that's currently been translated (I can't speak for those that haven't been translated, but it could well be top of those too). Whilst it does suffer from the problem that every serial novel does, the author manages it in a very good way. The novel is enticing, and every chapter leaves you wanting to know more about the mysteries.

One thing that I really enjoy in magic novels is when they provide a... more>> good reason why most people don't use it. And, boy, is there a good explanation here. From the get-go, the protagonist is warned about the dangers of magic, but chooses to pursue it anyway. He manages to pass the risks fairly easily (due to spoiler reasons), and things seem fairly happy for a while. But very quickly, he encounters case after case of people losing control of their powers and becoming monsters, including people he knows. The risks then suddenly become very real.

The magic items in this novel are also very interesting. Each of them has a side-effect from using it, and these side-effects can range from the relatively mild and amusing to seriously debilitating. For example, the protagonist later acquires a gun, whose side effect is to make him afraid of a random thing for six hours every time he fires it. This gets quite amusing when he is afflicted with a fear of women.

Beyond all this, the powers themselves are intriguing, and at times terrifying. It's not just fireballs and lightning, some people have power over coincidence, the power to turn their enemies into puppets, immortality at the expense of memory and many, many more.

Pick this novel up. It's worth it. <<less

If you keep avoiding this title because of those tags in description, just like me before... just stop deceiving yourself and take a look!

I really don't like novels with 'modern' weapons (especially if it's the main theme) but it's not the case here, It's only pivotal at the start of the story (mainly used by muggles and weak 'power' users), so it's relevant until MC gets to the threshold (sequence) where the supernatural aspect leaves firearms way behind, it's just that until this point, firearms are the best complement of shortcomings. It's also flourish of firearms, so nothing sci-fi like, just the beginning of technology on global scale, not only for wars but also in daily life.

I'm reading novels for like 4 years now and I didn't even hope to find anything on decent level anymore or at least something fresh... but here I am, I've got both in one package.

I'm pretty sure this one is TOP2 on my list right now.

This is a series that has a lot of things going against it for me. Below are a few examples:

    • It is close to steampunk with being set in the industrial revolution time.
    • Many side characters are lost for hundreds of chapters after being a big part of the story. Then they get a short update to keep them in the story for some future purpose in a year or something. Would work better in a normal book where you can keep them in mind without the long wait for it.
    • It is hard to know if something is pulled out nowhere or part of the overarching world since it is so big.
    • The magic system is at once super complex with strict laws and at the same time totally unpredictable for the reader since the characters are learning it as well after thousands of pages.
    • The MC has minimal personality and the things he says motivates him at the beginning limits his interactions with the world around him.
The reason I enjoy it so much though is because it is a journey of discovery. The main character tries to steer his actions but he is a small character in a big world. Thus we get to see him slowly getting stronger and the world expanding as he is able to find out more and more about it. (It also helps that the characters mostly have English style names so I can associate and remember them better.)

The side characters actually lead their own lives. They don't just show up in their interactions with the MC and then nothing happens to them until he shows up again. Seeing the world through multiple eyes also allows for interesting scenes to take place with minimal time skips.

In many ways it reminds me of One Piece. The power system is more structured, the story overall more serious and less focused on action (especially long combat isn't there) but many of the things that make me like One Piece occurs here as well. A character caring about justice and his colleagues while focusing on a journey with a clearly set goal. The world and cast slowly expanding as the MC gets more powerful. Minimal focus on romance while not ignoring it are some of the things that strikes me directly.

If you don't like an overly complex world that is slowly being shown to you as the characters discovers it then you will dislike this. It has plenty of action but it isn't action focused, it simply occurs due to the bigger movements in a natural way. Recently this has been slightly less true as he took a profession focused on battles and sought them out for wealth.

The reason why this is so highly rated is because it reads just like a Western novel you pick up from any bookstore! With a professional proofreader, I think webnovel can really publish this and get themselves onto the New York's Best Seller List.

The leveling system is a new thing where hard-to-find potions are the way to get stronger. There's also Gods, demons, ghosts etc trying to conspire with the mortals to descend onto the world. And we have an MC from modern China that is drawn into this world... more>> and trying to figure out how to get home.

The MC is a lucky person but there's no constant pie in the sky falling down into his mouth just because the author wants it. He has to struggle and go through many life and death encounters to gain the things he needs. He will meet powerful people that helps him but as the story moves forward, it doesn't feel forced at all.

I couldn't stop reading this once I picked it up so you guys are being warned up front. <<less

Whew, I finished this novel a while ago but was hesitant to write a review because all its crazed fans would pounce on me and tear me to shreds

So here's my opinion. Its overrated af.

Now listen, I have no problem with the majority of the novel. The characters are great albeit kinda bland, the world-building is top-notch, the power system is one of the best I've ever seen, . The writing and plot are also both solid 9/10s.

... more>> But the first 200 chapters is utter garbage

Yes, it's world-building, but holy sh*t if you're gonna waste 200 chapters of our time before the story even gets going you might as well just have an exposition dump at the start. It's just a stasis of repeating oneself and needless descriptions. For real they repeat stuff they explicitly stated 20 chapters before and spend paragraphs describing the logistics of renting a carriage. You could've condensed it into 100 chapters and it would've had the same effect.

Since 200/1300 chapters (around 1/6 of the story) is utter mind-numbing garbage, I find it fair to deduct (around) 1/6 of the stars.

And the fanbase of this novel too. They regard it as the second coming of Christ or something. The moment you say a negative about the first 200 chapters, you 'don't know good world-building when you see it'.

All in all, if you're a grizzled novel veteran. Grit your teeth, tolerate the first 200 chapters, and enter peak fiction. If you have ADHD like me or are new to novels. LEAVE. Any fun you derive from the later chapters will be nothing compared to the suffering you face reading through the first 200 chapters. Especially if you do it without breaks. <<less

I can write a long review but I think for this novel it was information overload for me. I will keep it short and precise.

This was a master piece. This was always on my read list, but I always want to leave it till near the end of the list because I know how many rave reviews it got. It didn't disappointed me one bit.

I was drawn to the world, drawn to the characters that was so live like. Even cannon fodders characters were able to drawn emotions from me.... more>> I care about them, I feel for them. The settings were so fascinating with endless possibilities, this world has so many paths way for it to go. Every things can be linked in one way or another. Fantastic writing, I was always on the edge of my seat and want to find out more and more, until my eyes drooping 3am into the morning.

I love the MC, I pray for him. I feel for his struggles, I want him to come through, I see what he's trying to do. It was so much pressure every step of the way. He never backs down, he always tries his best. He's always struggles against the powerful, he had to use his head and put his life on the line and knows when to retreat. He always fights not just for himself but for others too. It feels like batman but no will knows it's him. He's always 'others' but can never be himself. It was exciting and thrilling to read about him

The favourite part for me is the tarot club. You can actually feel the superiority you had over the characters in a book because you know more than them everytime. It just feel magical, this feeling is intoxicating and enjoyable.

I don't think there's a single bad thing I can say about LOTM. It even ticked off the no romance criteria. LOVE IT

"Let us end today's gathering here"

The Tarot Club members couldn't help but feel a baffling sense of sorrow. It was as though a grand ball was coming to an end.
Spoiler

I thought I was emotionally prepared when I picked this final volume up, but no preparation is enough. I can still feel my heavy heart. Maybe because I'm so much invested with this novel that I'm not yet ready to say goodbye. I want more, but I know I wouldn't get it so soon.

I know that Klein entering his slumber for an indefinite time isn't equivalent to him perishing. It was his way to stabilize his control over his own body and mind and not be able to lose himself to the old Lord of the Mysteries. But despite entering his slumber that can last for a long time, he's still fighting for his life and for his chance to protect the people he cared about, alone. With no one but himself to rely on. And it's still not clear if he would be able to completely stop the awakening of the LotM in him.

Klein leaving different tasks for the members of the Tarot Club before going into slumber and trusting them to wake him in the future, seriously made me so emotional. And Leonard getting so sincerely worried when he learned about Klein going into a slumber just hit so hard. Leonard is really the best friend Klein could ever have.

The whole scenario of Klein advancing into an Above the Sequence and his final showdown with Amon is just so freaking epic and intense. I wouldn't wish to meet Amon because he's seriously terrifying. No matter how good looking he is, I don't want to see him around Klein anymore in the future. He's unbelievably overpowered. But being overpowered doesn't mean he's without weaknesses. And that loophole was what Klein used to defeat the seemingly undefeatable God of Deceit. 'The Fool's Gambit' is really an accurate title for this volume.

The one who wasn't afraid of true death would yield the absolute advantage. Clearly, Amon wasn't prepared to sacrifice himself for this matter.

This volume cannot be considered as the end of the story. Actually, it can be regarded as a massive prologue before the apocalypse happens sixteen years in the future. The story is just getting started, is what this is. It's like the journey of how Mr. Fool came to be, the Mr. Fool who I know would play a big role in the apocalypse. I've learned that the sequel of this novel wouldn't have Klein as the main protagonist. There would be a new main character, but I know that Klein and the Tarot Club members would appear again in the future. There are a lot more of the plot left untouched so I know that the continuation of the story involves not only the OG characters here in LotM but more equally important characters that will get introduced in the sequel. I think that the new main character in the sequel would become a strong ally of Klein when the apocalypse comes. I'm not too sure if they will really become Klein's ally, but I'm sure that they will also play a huge part in the future events. Within sixteen years before the apocalypse, many more events will occur. I just hope that Klein will get out of his slumber at least in the second part of book 2. I already missed him a lot.

"From the beginning, you've been a guardian. You mimicked others until you were mimicked by others"

And that last chapter about Melissa and Benson's daughter praying to Mr. Fool! That was so unexpected that I was literally left speechless for a few minutes. So she knew that Mr. Fool is his 'dead' brother?? Because that was what my puny brain interpreted! And if so, I really want to know how she was able to discover that!!

I've said this in my review in the volume 1 of this series, but I'll say this again. Klein Moretti is easily one of my most favorite fictional characters I've ever known. And Lord of the Mysteries is definitely one of my favorite series I've ever read, not just this year. This is a masterpiece I'm glad I discovered. This series also introduced me to more webnovels that I'll sure be trying in the future. Unfortunately, the sequel of this novel titled Circle of Inevitability is still currently ongoing and just started last month, and I don't think I'll pick it up soon. I just want to stack more chapters before I start it.

I highly, HIGHLY recommend this novel to every fantasy reader out there. This is massive and has a rather intricately detailed and slow world building. There are people who have asked me about my opinion of this novel because they personally think this is boring, but please take note that this has a total of 1430 CHAPTERS. You won't be able to take a glimpse of the whole picture of the plot in just mere 100 chapters. Just give the first arc a try (213 chapters). If you still couldn't get into it after finishing the first arc, then you can choose not to continue this. Maybe this isn't your cup of tea. But I swear, this is so good!!! No words can express how much I love this series!!

PS. I would love to have a chat to those LotM readers out there!

Review:

Can I just say Klein is bae and the author is a genius? The plot is amazing. The planning is amazing. Things from literally the first chapter start adding up in later chapters and I’m just sitting there like wtfff I shoulda known. The villains are smart asl but so is Klein and it isn’t just because of plot armor. We get to learn more of his origins/backstory as the story goes on. Him being smart makes sense in my opinion. Like yes, he’s from earth but y’all please be... more>> patient, you’re not gonna think the author relies on plot armor as the story progresses. There’s losses and there’s wins. There’s plot, no romance, (doesn’t stop me from shipping some ppl) but the story has me effing hooked.

Side Characters:

Tell me why everyone is overpowered as hell. I love it. It creates a challenge for the MC and it also showcases the author’s writing talent. Where there’s a smart villain, (*cough cough* monocles) there’s a smart author right behind them.

Other comments:

I won’t spoil the names in the different arcs since that’s part of the fun but I will say this, the author’s naming choices is gold. Here’s some examples with some non important characters.

‘Dressed in a classic black robe, Ed Sheeran resisted the impulse in his heart and said to the sweet, young girl, Denise, “The gift of god is in our bodies, but if we want to obtain it, we must have a teacher guide it out.’

The author’s funny naming expertise struck again some time later, they named an owl Harry. Gahhh they’re amazing.

My ships:

Danitz x Anderson

MR AZIK X ME (I say this with my chest. That man is attractive asf)

This book is making me nervous whenever is see the word monocle bruh

Chapter 1271 and the book title finally reveals itself! Hurray! Hurray! <<less

So good, I'm at ch. 1200, I tought it had 2300 ch. but just now i've noticed it is actually 1400, so I'm crying... gddmnt

Interesting story that keeps you up, good portrail of characters and their growth, smart MC and realistic setting event thought it treats events akin to fantasy it never steams too far away from the story line or logical thinking, the way the author interwines smoothlessly rational and imaginery is just *Mwuah*, really a masterpiece.

EDIT: Omg I ended it only to understand that there are still... more>> 2 other books to the LOTM trylogy YEDSSSDSDD, man, I'm too happy feel like crying, I did think that there were too few chapters for the boss battle and I started getting depressed about such ending but Author didn't let me down in the end, sorry for doubting you Cuttlefish! now i'll read Embers ad Infinitum, his new story, I already started it and like the setting, too exited, never felt this hopeful for the future <<less

Usually, when I write reviews, I will look at other reviews (positive and negative) in order to consolidate my thoughts. However, with this novel, I can't really find any reviews that have the same problems I have with this novel.

First off, let me just say, this novel is pretty good. The pacing, characters, plot, and especially world building, are great. Just these facts alone put this novel far above the large majority of novels on this site. That said, this novel all suffers from a problem that makes it truly... more>> great, and it affects the novel quite a bit.

I saw another review that describes this novel as a plain glass of water. It's refreshing and tasty for those who haven't had it for awhile, but it makes you want something more.

Lets start off with the plot itself. The plot idea is great and unique. However the execution (while above average) was somewhat poor. In most stories, you can feel the rising action and climax. This novels rising action and climax feel almost blurred, and it's hard to tell exactly when they are. This novel gives a constant stream of information to the reader. (As expected of a mystery novel) However, it feels like they just throw more and more information, along with more important information, to represent the rising action. This causes the novel to lack a meaningful form of impact. For example, the ending was volume 1 was supposed to be relatively important in the main character's growth, and is supposed to be somewhat impactful. Due to the execution, it fell short and felt extremely lackluster. To put it in another way, it feels like the plot is constantly stagnating, as if theres supposed to be a "true" rising action, but it never comes.

This point reflects on the entire novel in different ways. For example, the character development. This novel, doesn't have a whole lot of it. The main character certainly grows, in the sense of a tree growing taller, rather than a tree growing branches. More and more information is provided about these characters, and their own intricacies. However, once again, none of this is very impactful. Other novels have 1d characters due to the lack of information while only providing key details occasionally. This novel is the opposite. All these characters are unique, but they never truly have the chance to grow in a meaningful way. Like with the plot, this makes it seem like all the characters have yet to be fully fleshed out, and at chapter 1k+, I truly wonder if they ever will.

Riding on the previous point, nothing is truly fleshed out. For example, this novel suffers from being relatively linear, especially in it's characters. There are almost zero neutral characters. They are all evil or good. This causes the novel to seem lacking. Referencing my point about plain water, it keeps you feeling like there should be something more.

As for the plot armor? It's rather excessive. Due to the main character's personality, he constantly embroils himself in matters way out of his league, yet always survives them. He works terribly hard and gets rather minute gains. I don't mind the fact that the main character is good-natured and gets himself involved in evil plots, it's the fact that the main character constantly says he doesn't want to get involved. This in particular is what annoys me. This changes (somewhat, they kinda just gloss over this aspect in general) later on.

Overall, it's a great novel that can be referenced to a plain glass of water. Tasty and refreshing, but leaving you wanting more. This novel definitely needs more impact, as well as fleshing out the story and characters in general. <<less

I've been eyeing this novel mainly because of the overwhelming hype and 5 star ratings that claim that this was "the best webnovel that they have ever read" and that it is something that shouldn't be missed and "a must read". After finding myself bored and tired of reading novels with brainless, illogical and hypocritical arrogant MCs, I decided to give this a try.

Needless to say, I came into this novel with high expectations after reading all the hyped up reviews. I even took note of the warning that the... more>> story starts slow-paced and then builds up its momentum as it goes, culminating into a masterpiece of a novel that would hook you and leave you wanting for more. So thus, I told myself that I would persist and hold on, no matter how slow the start is; because it would pay for itself later on.

However, reality wasn't as I expected it to be, and often times, I find myself struggling to continue reading onto the next chapter. Many times, I would find my self literally falling asleep after barely reading a chapter or 2. Sometimes, I would even find myself dozing off halfway through a chapter, and barely even remembering anything I just read.

As some have mentioned, the novel is full of rich and immersive details that isn't like a massive info dump, and it will keep you interested and engaged with the novel's rich lore and background, which would eventually connect everything as you unravel the mystery. Well..... at least they got the "novel is full of details" right. I never found those details interesting at all, and is mostly unnecessary (in my opinion).

I'm not saying that the novel is bad, but it's just not the great neither. Maybe it just isn't my cup of tea. I was never into dark and gloomy novels, and never had a penchant for lovecraft/horror mysteries; so maybe that's why I found myself half asleep and bored trying to read this novel. Moreover, aside from a couple of achievements that improves his and his family's situation, I've never found the MC interesting at all.

But again, I never got for into the story and just decided to give up on it 162 chapters in. Maybe I'll give it another try sometime in the future. But right now I'm just going to keep looking for something more fun and exciting; atleast something that won't make me fall asleep. <<less
