It is awful. It is full of s*upidity that it makes me wonder if the author is smoking drugs or something.

The MC is a ret*rd. His actions are so dictated by idiocy that you wonder why he didn't die the moment he was born.

And the other characters aren't any better, they can be just as bad or worse than the MC. The only feeling I have for them is frustration and dismay. They make decisions that is so s*upid and incomprehensible that they might as well be monkeys instead of... more>> humans. That way, their actions would make sense.

Maybe it is because of 'comedy' why these characters are brainless idiots, but, their s*upidity isn't even funny.

And the story is ret*rded. The Plot just consist of the MC and other characters doing s*upid things and making s*upid decisions that results to s*upid outcomes. I just can't understand what is happening! There is suspension of disbelief, but disbelief is the most appropriate reaction to this story. There is just no logic in it, or common sense.

The story is also very inconsistent with the details. They constantly contradict each other. The descriptions is very much useless.

Like, in chapter 3, the MC was in a horse shed. It was very dark and the MC is having a hard time seeing what is in front of him, but, he easily see the crossbeam which should have been in an even darker area of the shed when he got trapped. To top that, while he was hanging from the beam, he was able to see the face... and breast... of the girl bellow like it is was as bright as day. Was the girl glowing or something? Does the MC have magic eyes that can see girls in the dark?

Then, later, the girl shoots the MC with lightning bolts, our MC crashed into a wall and almost break it... but no one (like, the guards) noticed the commotion and the horses aren't affected or disturbed. I mean, hello, lightning, that is like bright and loud, then the MC slams onto the wall, that is also loud. It happen again later. The MC was kicked by a horse and crashed through the wall of the shed... and again, no one notices and the horses are undisturbed with all this loud noises and destruction. Is everyone deaf? Or is crashing through walls silent? Or the author just can't keep the details straight?

You also have to wonder why our MC doesn't suffer any serious injury after that. Hit multiple times by lightning bolts, slammed into the wall, kicked by a horse, crash trough the wall... and it seems all he get is bruises. He can probably hide in a refrigerator during a nuclear bomb explosion and he'll survive unscathed.

I just can't make sense of any of it. Does the author lacks experience with the real world? Is the author high on drugs? Or the author is a five year old?

Nothing makes sense! The MC is s*upid, the other characters are s*upid, the plot is s*upid, the setting is s*upid. Everything in the story is unadulterated nonsense.

To appreciate this story, I believe that you really have to turn off your brain, or you have to be someone who appreciate nonsense for the sake of it. Anyone who is even slightly critical or can't just can't turn their brains off for a prolonged period would only be frustrated. <<less

The story and pacing felt fine in the story. It's just that the MC is a moron who doesn't know how to control his lust and probably will end up doing s*upid things that he could have prevented if only he actually control himself.

Spoiler

I did not like that he was so stricken by the beautiful noble woman and forced himself on her. Additionally, every-time he meets her he becomes so entranced by her beauty that he acts like an idiot to his surroundings.

So i've read up till the current ch. (I got that far because I needed a filler while waiting for chapters from other novels) and I think i've read enough of the story to give a review. I honestly feel that 3.3 overall rating is actually too high of a rating for a story such as this. 1-1.5 star (s) would be enough imo. ½ For editing, and 1 for translation + hours the author put into trying (and failing) in writing this story.

TL:DR - Not worth my or anyone else's time. The writing is sloppy, nonexistent world building, boring characters except 1-2 side characters, almost nonexistent cultivation/power progression (unless he's given power from outside sources and luck), and the story is filled with errors in writing and editing (the translation is decent enough I imagine), Basically don't waste time on anything this author has written imo.

Characters: The MC has a boring personality, he doesn't excel at anything particular, he has an immensely boring background, and all his 'strength' is either borrowed or gained through plot armour, and everything is from outside sources. After reading more than 150 chapters I can safely say, that besides Andy and 1 other character there is no interesting personalities anywhere in the story so far, the antagonist (s) are as boring, uninspired... more>> and uninteresting as everything else in the story.

Worldbuilding/cultivation system/power progression: There is nothing in this story that I would use the word 'worldbuilding' for, it shares the same universe with another equally bad story (law of the devil) and there is basically no 'cultivation' or progression. Everything he gains, is through luck or outside sources like I mentioned earlier - He doesn't work for anything himself, only in the VERY early parts of the story.

Writing: I know i've written an awfully negative review, but tbh it's pretty justified, so please don't take too much offense by what I write next: It's cool that the author likes writing, and if other people enjoy his stories then all the better. But imo he has no literary/story talent at all, the writing is sloppy, it's full of sentences and paragraphs that gets repeated over and over.

The fights are poorly explained, boring, and even if you have a superhuman imagination/visualization skill, it would still be a boring and poorly written story. Also there's no tension, no end goal in sight for any of the characters. And for a story which uses 90% of the time focusing on war and battle, it's the worst story i've ever read with those genres in it.

Well I think most people would get the idea by now, that I feel this story is rubbish and should be skipped in it's entirety (and possibly anything else by the same author)

And to those who rate this story 4-5 stars: no offense intended, but I think you should try reading some of the top stories from royalroadl before you rate something of this caliber so highly. <<less

I'm gonna be honest with you guys. When I first read this story, I dropped it around ch. 19 because of the s*upid, pe*verted, teenage-vibes I got from this novel. But after reading a certain review on the site, telling me that you should only judge the story after ch. 20, I gave the novel another chance. And I don't regret it.

The Masked knight then picks up and discards most of the s*upid stuff I hated so much. It was almost as if I was reading an entirely new novel,... more>> and it improved my opinion of this story from 2 stars (before ch. 20) to 4 stars. But because I don't want you to drop this novel based off of a poorly done intro, I'd advise you to start reading from around ch. 15.

Aside from my recommendation, you can also read other reviews to fine tune your understanding of the masked knight to find out if this story is right for you. <<less

Unwarranted hate. Don't understand all the low scores as it's not that bad. Maybe the novel is a 3.5 but that doesn't mean it's bad. I think the reason for this is the stable scene with Nicole (you will know when you read it). If you get past that it does get better but it's slow paced and there are only 26 chapters out right now. Unfortunately I have to balance the score.

1 star = awful
2 stars = didn't like it
3 stars = ok
4 stars = good
5 stars = incredible

The main character does something an inexperienced teenager that doesn't talk to females would do (kind of).... more>> This just means that there can be lots of character development since he isn't that likeable in the beginning.

As for story, it reads like a young adult fantasy novel. <<less

MC is a ungrateful, whiny crybaby. Simply put, everything he says contradicts what he does and say.

The early chapters depict MC as a rapiest, pe*vert and a loser, then the author starts to sculpt him as a hero, now we are back to him being a whiny kid all over again. Before MC took the role as duke of tulip family, he was a loser, had nothing and a weakling. Now the MC is a whining little kid that is crying about how his arm hurts cause he got a... more>> massive power up with the help of the skeleton. MC says that he wants to protect his people and would not turn his back on them, and that he loves Nicole and he would do anything for her now he's saying the opposite; he doesnt care about the people, the tulip family, seth or anyone for that matter. <<less

First impression of Masked Knight:

Plot:
It's Western fantasy, it's engaging, not much info dump to setup the world, so its easier to read. The world is similar to the world in 'Law of the devil' (Author's earlier work). MC has a huge birth mark on his face due to which he looks weird and doesn't get girls. Story line is interesting, it makes you binge read.

Spoiler

MC reluctantly agrees to participate in a robbery staged by his friend to pay his tuition fees, the robbery goes wrong n his friend is captured by the intended victim who is from a declining noble family, MC invades her home to rescue his friend but ends up being an involuntary accomplice to the noble lady's brother who has shirked away his responsibility as the sole heir to the family to run away in pursuit of his dreams, the noble lady holds the MC responsible n changes the MC's face using an elven Mask so that it looks like her brother's n makes the MC temporarily stand in for her brother

[collapse]

Characters:
MC is timid and immature but he shows great responsibility and courage when his near and dear ones are in danger and doesn't hesitate to rescue them at the cost of his own life. He is not OP or anything but he has great potential to be a swordsman. The noble lady's character is also well written, she is a sorceress n comes off as cold but that is due to her circumstances. Other characters didn't feature too prominently at this point.

The OP treasure:
The first treasure that the MC gets is an elven mask, it was made by a great sage, and it can allow the MC to have any face the master of the mask imagines. But it's implied that the mask's abilities may not be so simple because the MC and the noble lady who puts the mask on his face haven't decoded the instruction manual left by the sage.

Cons:
MC's immaturity is used for plot progression, this is not exactly a con but nevertheless when you read the novel it gets on your nerves n u feel like slapping the MC.

Verdict:
It's worth reading despite it's flaws and my expectations from this novel is high since it's written by the author who wrote 'Conquest' and 'Law of the Devil'. <<less

Let me preface this with saying, I have not read all of the novel.

The main character, Harem protagonist No. 22000321421, wants to have s*x. 5 chapters in, boom there's a beautiful (supposedly) goddess-like woman who's just there practically *waiting* to be taken advantage of by his innocence and boyish (?) spirit of compassion and friendship! What a score for the gods of plot development! Some stuff happens, and what would you know, the main female lead who our main character so "adores" (He really just likes her body though, right?)... more>> is super strong and cool and other adjectives. Skip to five chapters letter, boom our main character progresses from an innocent young knight into a s*xual deviant as he kisses our unconscious (by his hand mind you), unprotected female lead. As if that wasn't bad enough, our female lead acts as if the world has just fallen apart from a kiss, what a reaction. But wait, it gets better! Our MC, who is somehow feeling wronged by this, knocks her out again, meets with her brother, and has a conversation that basically goes like this.

"Hey I knocked your sister out don't arrest me thanks."
"Yeah no problem, I'm running away from home anyways"
"Oh we cool then?"
"Nah I decided to knock you out now. Horse, go get him"
"Wait what, what hor- *horse whip nae naes on him and he f*ckin dies*
"Don't you dare touch my sister wierdo! Anyways, so long! Viva la Paris! (or something) "

An interesting and completely logical conversation, as you can see. Cut to what's probably the next morning, main man wakes up to main girl binding him (Didn't know she was into that), to which the main character, in all of his glory, feels offended by. Girl asks him some questions, to which he replies to with the usual Shounen friendship bullsjhit, and boom he's a servant now (That doesn't seem exactly legal...)

5-10 chapters pass, during which some plot stuff happens and boom our MC gets his all important mask, as you may have been able to tell by the title. MC has got some master swordsman teaching him because, of course, he is the MC and always deserves the best. Swords guy gives our MC some of his "seed" (Which if you ask me, is hella gay) and says "I don't accept desciples, probably from some dark past for later parts of this novel" and then the author drops some subtle foreshadowing. That is, if you spell subtle with a capital S, and foreshadowing as literally telling you the future plot (Lot's of stories do it, no idea why). after that, skip some more "sage dude is a god, but it's basically just magic you'd see in some rpg shit" and meeting some probably kinda cool skeleton, and we're onto our MC's most powerful skill, "x-ray vision" which he of course uses the spy on the naked female lead, a future hero if I've ever seen one.

And with dear regret, that's basically when I drop the story. All in all, with my explanation you can see literally nothing of substance happened, and our MC is the same shounen little bit*h you'd see anywhere else. People keep telling me to read past chapter 40 or so on and so forth, but considering this story is 300~ chapters long in total, that's almost a 5th of the story, and clearly not worth my time. If a story isn't good for a fifth of the story, it's not good. bye <<less

Don't be fooled by the low rating and the terrible reviews. This story is absolutely amazing.

Sure the main character acts like an idiotic hormonal teenager at first. But that is because he is one! He is only 18, who can say that you didn't do s*upid stuff when you were young?

Yet what makes this story good is that he slowly grows out of it. While he is sometimes idiotic he is also sincere and has principle.

But ultimately the scale of this story is a lot bigger than just a teenager... more>> growing up. Very quickly politics and war are thrown into the equation and it gets incredibly intense. The underlying conflicts of the story are actually quite complex and the battles are very heroic. It feels like it definitely had some thought put into the story, you don't have randomly people provoking the MC or stuff like that.

If your only reason for not liking the story is because the protagonist is unlikable then stick around because he definitely gets way better. <<less

This novel has a great potential. It has a room for a character development because the MC isn't a reincarnated creepy old guy chasing underage girls. Yes, the MC is quite pe*verted but it can be understandable he's just a normal teen who has s*xual fantasies.

The mc's background is a poor orphan that wants to be a warrior he has a decent talent in swordmanship (even a master swordsman praise him for that) but due to his background he can't get recognition from the academy. As for the... more>> supporting characters they're very interesting.
-Seth a young master is a successor of military family which he don't like as a result he indulge in debauchery and being branded as a waste but he is very clever he has very different outlook in life he likes to be free and he's going to be a sage as the novel hinted.
Laura, as the older sister of seth she's responsible on maintaining their declining family. You can really feel the struggle that she's been experiencing and the measures that she's doing in order to bring back the family. I don't really know why people calling this novel idiotic without justification I know there are minor flaws but it's not on the point of s*upidity.

It's a good novel and I do expect that this is not a one man army novel because we have too much of it in this community

Ps:sorry for the wrong grammar lol <<less

I'm like most readers. I will look at the reviews and tags to get a feel for the story. This usually determines whether I go ahead and read it. The reviews I read totally smashed this novel for his s*upid interactions with women and totally wrong allegations. For example, someone wrote about r*pe and I have not read anything about r*pe.

Okay, back to the review. Honestly, this story gives a feeling like Otherworldly Evil Monarch and A Step Into the past with the schemes with royalty and power surges. The... more>> MC does have a bit of a hard time with women but it's not like a totally lost in love thing, but a relationship. The power surges are plot armor, but does any novel not have any plot armor? What matters is whether its done right. This novel really brings you in with the schemes and gives reasons for those power surges.

I have read till Ch 200 and I don't think this novel deserves all the 1-star reviews. It may have 3 or 4-star reviews, but 1 star; really? Whoever reviewed 1 star is either trolling or can't appreciate a decent novel. I have read novels where they are horrible in story and explanations. Those deserve 1 star NOT this novel. That's all I have to say. <<less

I quite enjoyed this novel. MC actually gets believable character development. He is shaped by his experiences and changes from a weak, wimpy kid into a competent badass. Not only does his strength improve, so does his mentality and personality. Although some developments were a bit fast and forced, most of it is enjoyable to read and believable.

Unlike MCs from xianxia novels, who overshadow all other characters, Rody from Masked Knight is not so much of a "blazing sun" character. He's unwittingly dragged into a huge turmoil and forced to... more>> impersonate a duke. Rody is fairly weak early on, but does gradually become strong. The plot is quite interesting however it does leave an unpleasant aftertaste since everything he accomplishes so far is in someone else's identity. Especially regarding romance:

Spoiler

A couple of the love interests that Rody meets are Seth's (the original duke) women. In particular he has quite a romantic and touching scene with Jojo, but that's only because she thinks he's Seth. Also Myka (Seth's original lover) is another one of his love interests.

[collapse]

Apart from the romance department, which I personally found strangely unpleasant (he makes out with the Duke's sister, while wearing her brother's face. Like wtf, this is how you get in*est-NTRed), the rest of the novel is a very nice read. <<less

The story is good, and the MC is nice, but he is nothing but a naive MC driven by people and luck, yes of course he started to mature, but I really can't distinguish the MC value, anyone other than him might have done the same or better. And he is impotent unlike his youthfulness and desire to be a man, and the huge range of possibilities opening in-front of him, unlike when not a single girl would watch his way before, witch should make him more urgent in this... more>> matter.

Spoiler

There is this one s*upid thing that keeps annoying me throughout the story, the MC got a elf ears thing that bothered him to death, and may cause him serious problems, but the MC never asked the people who may has the ability to help him, actually his secret friend promised him to help him if he do him a favor, but the MC never asked him later, and the whole story he was hidden them with some s*upid ear muffs, that no one pinpointed how strange is that. What's more annoying is that the problem is gonna be solved randomly later.

[collapse]

And there is some inconstancy and confusion in the powers and sometimes the story, like for example sorcery is extremely powerful, but the most powerful empire is specialized in swordsmanship then magic, and while magic is due to the influence of some ancient legendary magician figure, strangely the later is actually a sorcerer as well as a magician. <<less

A lot of people keep on giving it low star, because it's translated by QI or maybe because of the stable scene, but before you make a judgment read a 100 chapter first because it's like digging wherein you never noticed that you only need just 1 shove and poof you found the gold.

Anyways this story is good once you reach chapter 50 as its pace is comparable to korean novels and also on how the romance here isn't forced and it takes time for their love to bloom. And... more>> lastly the fights here are quite nice to read so give it a go, even if you won't love it, I know you'd like it. <<less

This novel is a story of a commoner who learns the hardships of life. The story itself does not focus that much on fight scenes, power-ups, and the usual scenarios you would read on Chinese novels. It is understandable that chapters 1 - 40 ish could be boring to some and at the same time make the MC look like an idiot, but after that the MC and the story in general progresses at a unique flavor. We see the mc's hardships both of his external and internal struggles, morals,... more>> beliefs, as he is forced to do things for the sake of his lover.

Key points of the novel:

  • World building and lore
  • Main character's progression as a person, and his struggles from right or wrong.
  • It's unique, you would not expect this to be a CN novel. REALLY.
  • Character's are unique each to their own, they have their own purposes and intent. (Not just for mc's sake)
And that's about it, a slow start and read mostly early chapters leave more questions and berrate mc's decisions but still a good read. <<less

This novel is a strange one. Overall, I enjoyed it. Especially the first half. It was interesting, it made me curious, what is going to happen later. But the latter half became dull. I felt that, writing for the author became a chore. (Like: "Ah... let's finish this, since I started it.") And the ending was rushed. But still, he gave an ending.
