Chu Yang, the Ninth Master of the Nine Tribulations Sword, sacrificed almost everything he had for the sake of improving his martial arts, including the love of his life. After spending three years locating the fifth fragment of the Nine Tribulations Sword, he was ambushed by all sides at that very place. Mortally injured with no means of escape, Chu Yang executed a sacrificial technique by plunging the Nine Tribulations Sword into his very own heart. “With the blood of my heart, ten thousand tribulations will collapse!”

After witnessing the death of all his ambushers, Chu Yang’s vision began to darken. At a distance, moments before his death, he saw the mastermind who had plotted his downfall — Mo Tian Ji. With that, his eyes finally closed.

However, with a start, Chu Yang once again awoke to find that he had returned to when he was sixteen years of age! Furthermore, the Sword Spirit of the Nine Tribulations Sword now resided within his Dantian, the energy center of his body! From that very moment, Chu Yang would then begin to right all of his past regrets, and carve his very own legend by fulfilling his destiny as the final Master of the Nine Tribulations Sword, and defeating the Heavenly Devils beyond the realm of the Nine Heavens Continent.

I have been enjoying this novel immensely ever since I started reading it.

The MC starts off weak, but is gradually getting stronger in cultivation and strategy. He can plot and scheme with the best of them in regards to the worlds of martial arts and mortal politics. As words of caution, I almost died laughing from some of the antics of the MC and his band of brothers so you might want to be careful when reading.

There is romance, for those who enjoy it, and I don't have any major... more>> complaints about the novel. There are some typical cliches, but overall they don't really detract from the story. <<less

Fengling Tianxia's stories do not use cultivation things as the main plot. It is only an element of the story. I personally like how he shows that power (so cultivation) is also necessary to control the happiness in life. Fengling Tianxia, I have read somewhere, is a retired soldier. As such, one can easily notice the recurring brotherhood theme in his novels. He also instill into his novels his beliefs, anguishes, and insights regarding things in life, including, I believe, his opinions about their government, sexism, etc. I have disagreements... more>> with some of his themes, of course. But that doesn't make his novels tr*sh automatically, though. In fact, I quite enjoy how he shows his beliefs, together with rebuttals of his beliefs in his novels, to show why he has those mindsets. His writing style is quite good, mixing comedic scenes and serious ones in a balanced manner (at least, in TTNH, as far as I can remember, and unlike in FMAB), plot and themes are very interesting, characters are "quite" realistic and definitely not cut-out caricatures inserted just for the sake of something (usually sub-par plots), even the antagonists (most of the time), and story-telling definitely good; it makes you feel excited and pump out. TTNH, I think is his best novel in this site. Overall, it is a 6/10. I changed it from 7 to 6 since his themes are too blatant and too scattered, now that I am continuing it.

Edit: Now that I am planning to continue reading it, I remembered that everything related to the MC is over the top, thus making some, if not most, of the MC's struggles shown to us rather redundant. It's just like the problem with overpowered MCs. Luckily, the themes aren't that heavy and quite fitting with the feeling of the series. I'll still give it a 6.

Edit: a 5 <<less

The novel becomes good after MC leaves his sect (around chap 50, until now it's pretty cliché), so far the romance seems slowly built and I don't feel the "blank" romance like other novels. It's already worth to read with just that, later MC uses his brain (even if most of time, bad guys seems just too dumb when they are so old..), good brotherhood and like "heroines" (still not confirmed), they aren't with MC just because he is a MC, there have also a "smart" antagonist who cares about... more>> his brothers (not blood-related). <<less

Although reincarnated but things won't stay the same and makes you wonder and keeps you on your toes and is exciting.

Strong start, but the pace slows down after a while (several hundred chapters in, so that still gives you some time to appreciate the story), and things get a bit long-winded on military strategy.
Still a pretty solid series.

The MC’s sword techniques being named after the lines of a poem is a very nice touch.

Summarize in 20 words or less:

Great novel, nice plot, great MC, involving naration, relatable side characters.
9/10 in my book

Update after 100 chapters:

Good novel, nice plot, great MC, a bit too much on the political side, relatable side characters.
7/10 in my book.
(There can be only so much political stuff that I can read in a Xianxia... Theres a reason why I read Harry Potter and not Jack Ryan series...)

Currently at Chapter 736. (Btw, total chapter count needs updating. Chapter count resets after every volume. Rough count would put the number of chapters at the 2000+ range).

It's a very nice story, definitely has better pacing than the author's other book (Otherworldly Evil Emperor). It starts off pretty simple enough, but as you read through it the story gets richer and richer.

It's not perfect. It has some elements that I don't like
- I hate it when MCs (and his companions) get massive power boosts from out of the blue. As in, gaining levels 3-4 at a time. One time is possibly ok, but more than that...
- Way too OP schtick.
Spoiler

His sword 'cuts through iron like mud' (lifted literally from the machine translation) ; has a 90, 000 year old sword spirit that can give him advice, ancient powerful techniques, even once in a while can possess his body to give him a super power boost; Sword has a dimensional space (no mention of anyone else having similar gadgets unlike in other Xianxia) ; Sword can also absorb rare materials and herbs so that it can power up - leftovers are used to create weapons that are sharper and harder than pretty much anything else in the case of metals, and medicines that give near instant regeneration (if someone has a hole poked through them, one dose of the medicine can patch them up within minutes). There are also hints of the sword gaining more abilities as more of the sword's sections are retrieved.

[collapse]

Fortunately, those elements occur just around the beginning; it doesn't rear its ugly head much after a certain portion of the story. I'm giving it a 5, not a 4 even with the items mentioned above since the author seems to have matured, and with more than 1000 chapters to go, there's still a lot of potential to this book.

This... was a "I'm bored, I want to read something while I'm at work" novel. Well that was my original motive to read this series. Do I regret it? No. Definitely not! I like the protagonist, I like the story, I like how the protagonist acts and his internal arguments, the misunderstandings and more importantly, the pacing of the story. So this story is interesting, it has good pacing and I am crying that there are not more chapters to devour. That fulfills my category for 4.5/5; rounded up to... more>> 5/5 <<less

Don't really get how this ln gets so many good reviews. Its bland. Very bland. The protagonist of the story has heaven defying cheat abilities that "transcends" all other abilities of any other ln protagonist that I've read. The author even clearly states the power the MC holds and makes me think that it's impossible for anything unexpected to occur. Not to mention how horrible the romance is done, nearly on the level of IET. The side characters are pretty good however and carry more depth then in most ln,... more>> but it really can't make up for how tr*shy the story really is. The plot is beyond bland, just so f*cking bland and boring. I thought it would pick up some pace but in reality it doesn't. <<less

Love - Hate relationship.

'+' :-

-> captivating story, awesome world building, superb side character development, story progression at moderate pace, very few fillers.

'-' :-
-> Too much feminism (fascist type), sexism, male dominance. Broken cultivation system, broken in the sense that nothing makes sense, inconsistent power level, every 5 chapters author tends to contradict previously stated facts, Forced relationship with butian using aphrodisiacs and glorification of useless baggage qingwu.

I almost dropped it at several occasions as it makes me frustrated, irritated, angry and absolutely mad but story makes me pick it up again. As I said above it is a love hate relationship. There is no xinxia novel that I have loved so much and no novel which I have hated this much.

Update- I say author what are smoking. The MC and his brothers go through life-threatening battle and only then they inprove, while their wives just have to take elixir from MC and boom they are neck to neck with these guys. Why don't you take those elixir urself. Moreover MC became sage after a desperate fight and it is being said that his foundation us unstable while those four wives of his are same realm as him yet they never have fought a single proper battle but they never faced any bottlenecks/unstable foundation/ mentality problem.

My 3rd time giving this novel a go and dropping it again, rated this highly my first run but dropped cause quality just falls sharply.

I'm guessing most of the high comments were like me that got happy from the initial dopamine rush.

3rd run just highlights plenty of flaws from the novel

In Lower Three Heavens : great read. Great characters. Great plot. Lots I want to see.

In Middle Three Heavens : MC is an all-knowing undefeatable god even though he's supposed to be weak. No one can be smarter than him, no one can be stronegr than him, he has treasures way too strong for anything to make sense. Examples : Nine Tribulation Pills : has thousands of them, they make you climb 10 ranks now btw. Has invisible uncurable poisons in infinite amount. Can kill 5 Emperors while a king... more>> becasue he's so smart. Author keeps inventing new op powers that are defeinitly unneeded. Exemple : "Sword Spirit : btw there are other fragments of sword spirit that boost your cultivation, allow you to use other op powers, allow you to create more pills even more op with 0 drawbacks.

I'm really sad. Great writing turned into MGA level of bs. Read a few chapters and more op powers keep coming. <<less

In my opinion this was one of the book with the potential to be one of the best out there. Author's story narrating, progress, execution is great as can be seen in RITF but for me only problem is MC's personality flaw. 1. MC is intelligent, decisive, cruel to emeny, good to friend and all but MC is emotionally scarred so it makes his behaviour sometimes excessive especially when comes to his friends in this case his "brotherly love" it sometimes is irritating. This love good and and all but in this story it's sickening.

Spoiler

specially in CH 753 Mc' s behavior and actions is in word pathetic. Come on so ur brothers are dead so u'll commit su*cide forgetting all of ur responsibility. MC forgets about his parents, his lover, his teachers commitment. Hell, it isn't like your 18 generation is dead u are committing suicite

[collapse]

Spoiler

as in first talk with the devil king chu yang's dialong as such goes"I wanna enjoy the mountain scenery with my brothers"why u don't have Mo qingwu. Sometimes it seems MC is married with his brothers or something. Cause the affection level higher with his brothers than his lovers

[collapse]

2. Storyline more progresses MC almost forgets the reason he took rebirth for.I say, as I remember MC wanted to redo his life by spending with his past lover but story progresses it almost gets replaced by his brothers. Come on, it's how it gonna be what's the point of that big prologue at the start of story. 3. MC is full of "compassion". Whenever MC kills a talented individual he's full of hesitation and regret. Come on man that's your enemy why does it matter.

4. What's more annoying is every 10-15 chapters later there atleast will be a tear stricken scene between brothers or a s*upid test to show how frocking awesome their is.

5. Most of the time MC is good at scheming not so at fighting in this case his brothers are better than MC. But our MC is the "lord" of nine heavens but in battle prowess he suck. All he can do sneak attack or running with his tails between his leg. Though op MC isn't recommended in every novel but in the way the storyline goes, this novels MC has to be op otherwise it doesn't really go with the flamboyant name of master of nine heavens, does it?

So, at least to me if MC would forget "brotherly affection" crap and treat his friend and enemy like ye xiao in RITF it would be one of the best out there.

I have one thing to say only because it really bothers me.

THE COVER, IN NO WAY, REPRESENTS THE NOVEL!!

Spoiler

i really don’t like it but I can’t exactly change it. The past one was way better. If I saw this cover back when I started reading this, I probably wouldn’t have touched this, because face it, we judge based on appearances, and first impressions matter.

this novel is GREAT and has a relatable MC that doesn’t seem perfect. Things aren’t always easy for him and he REALLY loves the female lead. Like a lot. He literally

reversed time and space for her, to my knowledge at this point.

And the female lead is also not the type to be content with being protected, she genuinely feels frustrated she isn’t strong enough. She literally thinks “I’m gonna get stronger and protect and spoil Chu Yang! I’ll be his sugar mommy!” *insert adorable overbearing face*

Chu yang actually has

I'ts an great novel with a smart MC, excellent comedy, good fights and war scenes and well developed side characthers that aren't forgotten in a dozen of chapters or so, the pace is a bit slow and in the start and it may drags a little, which may annoy some readers, but as long you keep reading it gets more and more better.I totally recomend you to read this novel. The novel is half politics and half wuxia. The politics part (where the MC poses as Minister King of Hell Chu) is awesome, its almost on the level of The Grandmaster Strategist with deep schemes everywhere. This is the part that I really like, with a thought-out world, intersting characters and the MC doing lots of awesome things, tricking everyone. Its just fun to read. And then there is the other part, wuxia cultivation. Here the MC is Chu Yang and I dont like him at all.... more>> He is a hypocrite, pe*ophile, a**hole, and just overall unlikable. He is madly obsessed with his main love and it just hurts to read. As if the author just had to get the most clichee reason for MCs motivation and uses it to plow through his otherwise well crafted story. Honestly its so bad I cant describe it. It feels so cheap to read about it, and it totally ruins all the fun Ive had with this novel otherwise. 3* max, this is a major disappointment. <<less

I-hate-exclamation-marks.

This style of writing implies that the narrator is not impartial, which opposes the style that we see in the overwhelming majority of western literature.

Imagine Lovecraft writing something like "ZOMG!!! That spooky creature jumped on him from the ceiling!!!"

Feels silly, isn't it?

The reader is not able to react wholeheartedly and form his or her opinion because there is the narrator, imposing his attitude and opinion.

And, unfortunately, this idiosyncrasy completely ruins reading experience.

Overall - 1/5.

One of the best, and an absolute masterpiece. I have few gripes, none really the fault of the novel, or anyone in particular, really. Everything is done to the highest standard: characters, dialogue, narrative, world-building, micro- and macro- plots, pacing, complexity (and lack of an idiot plot, look it up if you don't know what that is), romance, humor (oh, the HUMOR) the list goes on and on. The only complaint I have is that it doesn't come out fast enough; combined with the way this novel grips you lending... more>> itself to binge reading, a reader may lose track of some of the side characters. The complexity of the novel's plot and the myriad of political and military machinations and espionage make it important to remember these characters, and a problem that followers of A Song of Ice and Fire (or Game of Thrones, for those heathens that watch tv as opposed to basking in the canon-ness of literature) are familiar with: who was that and why was he/she/it/topkek important again? This is a logistical problem, as if the release schedule is pushed, translation quality may drop, and not a soul should want that. In a world with some semblance of justice, this would get the lightning-fast translation speed of CD, ISSTH, or even less deserving works that are not on WW but rather under the oft-maligned Qidian umbrella, such as The Magus Era, and all would be right with the world. <<less
