Martial Peak is a bit interesting. I'd give it like a 3.8 which is a pretty close to the average on novelupdates to begin with. Despite it's shortcomings, the MC and the story are still overall pretty good.

I'll just state the main negatives that I find dissatisfying.

First main issue I have with this novel is that due to the sheer amount of chapters, I'm sure the the author has been contracted for word count or something similar to that. There are paragraphs where you just glance at and don't even... more>> read because it's copy pasta and info you already read for like the 10th time. Sure, you might not remember but if you're actually reading it, it can be a bit aggravating. This issue is definitely rampant in other novels as well.

2nd: The arrogant, s*upid masters. (Kinda filler tr*sh antagonists)

Lastly, some arcs I find can be pretty boring. For example: I like the current arc, but the previous arc was so boring I skipped most of it. All I did was see what sorts of power increases the MC got, what other advantages he gained, and what sorts of character developments happened.

TL;DR

If you want an MC who slaps people hard and has some pretty nice luck with the ladies, then you'll probably enjoy this. I find the story to be pretty lighthearted relative to other ones. If you've read more than a dozen other novels you might want to skip it unless this fits your niche.

If you're new to novels, go read the 'comic' and see if you like the story. Also, the translator is good. <<less

Whenever I read this novel I can't help recalling Ma Hong Yun from Reverend Insanity. This dudes luck is insane. There is absolutely no reason why this guy is talented, besides swallowing precious treasure pills, and obtaining coincidential secret arts, and rare artifacts.

What really pisses me off is that the author tries to make the guy smart. Yang Kai possessed extremely below average intelligence, and makes the intelligence of the others around somehow lower. JUST BECAUSE YOU'RE SURROUNDED BY DUMB PEOPLE DOESNT MEAN YOURE SMART. A whole chapter could be... more>> spent on some young master saying "this trivial *insert low cultvations level* doesn't know the immensity of heaven and earth.". *Yang Kai punches him once*. Repeat for 4000 chapters. Im not even gonna get started on how he treats "his women" implying that their his objects, being unfaithful. Also every single female character, not even joking, is somehow "a peerless beauty with jade, flawless skin and rich peaks". UGH.

There is only one thing innately powerful about MC, and that is his astounding luck. Its like having rank 9 fate gu on him at all times. <<less

its alright, you read about to the point of the 3rd major arc and by the 4th it just gets repetitive. it was enjoyable in the beginning since everything was pretty refreshing but as you read you realize one HUGE problem with this story that just ticks me off and rubs me in the opposite direction and makes me wish I just read till the 3rd arc.

*****this novel just makes you want to cheer for the enemy to hurry up and kill the main character and to stop talking. like... more>> legit enemy has OP weapon than can one shot the main character but talks on and on wasting time and in the end loses because of main character plot armor. or enemy has so many chances to kills his friends and family but doesnt and feels rubbing it in is better. like dude just kill his family and friends, get it over and watch him suffer afterwards instead of talking on and on. so damn boring.......

some other points for later arcs on how main character changed:

-main characters whole journey is base on his luck and treasure no real martial skills involved.

-main character treats women like objects

-if main character was alive in our real world he would have been a s*ave owner

(very selfish and radical ideology)

-every person he meets are very smart in planning but when main character meets them they suddenly develop some kind of s*upidity where they dont fight back with the main character. honestly if some of these people thought about it the main character would have died or lost his loved ones multiple times

Spoiler

main character keeps saying breaking through and cultivating with ones own strength is king and that using other treasures and objects are just secondary strength and not true strength.

well guess the f*ck what. the only thing main character does use is treasures like literally all his battles he just uses some godly cheat treasure to win. no real use of his own powers and strength to win. also when breaking through he just takes pills and when the tribulation comes he uses treasures to block for him instead of using his body to withstand it. like WTF. what happened to all that using your own strength makes your foundation great. never seen anywhere that this actually applies. im flabbergasted that this main character hasnt gone into cultivation deviation. ridiculous.

should just name this novel TREASURE PEAK

edit1:

continued reading a bit more and main character is truly a tr*sh character. lost his original personality and became the young master that likes to ens*ave people bully the weak and runs from the strong. there is even one part where a person is dying and they had no grievances and the main character still ens*aves the person. and even roxie the female companion feels like that is wrong. the author uses the word shameless but honestly thats not the words to use it should be disgusted because it is disgusting how much the main character changed. there is also one part where the main character doesnt know what is going on but still put up a I know what is going on face and not admitting to it. like WTF this is what tr*sh side characters in other stories do. honestly very disappointed.

I'm torn between giving a 3 and a 4. I ultimately did decide on the 4 as you can see, mostly because the author kept things entertaining with a relatable main character, a strong plot, and occasional secrets being unveiled-one of my favorite things in a novel-for thousands of chapters.

The cultivation was good for most of the story, however it gradually got worse and worse until where I am now, and it seems like the author doesn't know how to properly progress things anymore.

Like most harem novels it's handled poorly... more>> and so makes little sense. The number of women is ridiculous too.

I may be a little biased because for most of it, the novel hit my sweet spots, but I'd still give it a 3 if it didn't. <<less

Gradually I realized that it's basically a wuxia version of a cheesy 90s p*rno. Every time a new female character is introduced we get several paragraphs about their sexy appearance. Inevitably at some point their clothes will come off and there will be some sudden reason that the protaganist finds themselves in a situation where they cannot help but grope and grind up against them.

Other then that a very typical version of the genre. Honestly still above average if we are comparing it to most of the stories like it... more>> you can find here, but not really good. <<less

The good first part of the novel is pretty good! No fillers, the story pacing is great, fun characters, a fair amount of adventures.

But the novel goes to sh*t in the last arc, I don't know what the hell happen but the pacing is now awfull, it's nothing but filler, the side characters are very bland (beside one) and MC's cultivation is extremely slow, and from what i've saw, those issue don't get fixed but instead get worse and worse as the story goes.

About the translation, it's pretty good! You... more>> do need to go past 500 chapters or so before the translation team stops treating a chapter as some sort of private chat room where the translator give a comment about something, then the editor respond to that, then the proofreader respond to that, i've never saw that before and it was extremely annoying! But like I said, overtime they stop doing that and the translation is pretty good with about ~12 chapters a week right now, so thanks for that. <<less

Well, the first chapters at least were good but then it started to decline quite a bit. I think the only good thing I found in the novel was that it had at least some romance, but those chapters don't add up to more than 30 or 40.

Now I go with everything bad (for me).

Spoiler

First is that the MC gives resources to others, creates useless forces that cannot help him, for example, he joined several forces, put them in one place, gave them cultivation resources (it should be noted that the disciples of those forces were weak or at least for the moment in which they were and they were not going to do any good even if they have a little more strength) then our MC takes out of his storage, pills of the best there are, artifacts, also liquid that changes fitness, heals very wounds fast and gives a lot to those forces, then it is time for the fight. What happens? Only 13 people (they were only loyal to him) could really help since the other people were only cannon fodder, there were 20 others who were just as strong as those 13 but were not loyal to him, at most they had respect for him. MC.
Well, a lot of cultivation resources were wasted there, now the worst thing is that those people were able in just 1 month to overcome 3 small kingdoms, our MC? Only 1.
Our MC never uses those liquids, nothing more to heal wounds.
Now I am going to the worst that annoys me most, the MC clearly does not have bottlenecks for 4 or 5 minor kingdoms, he can stay in one place and isolate himself for a couple of years and with all the cultivation resources he has he would already be a powerhouse maximum worldwide, what does it do? He goes out to look for more cultivation resources, he puts his life at risk unnecessarily, he continues to give resources, he helps other people with nothing that can help him but he thinks so.
Now I'm going with the topic of his wives, for now he only has 1 which is the one he had s*x with, the other only hugs, but THEY go up their kingdoms faster than the MC without DOING ANYTHING, THEY DON'T DO ANYTHING AND STILL GO UP FASTER THAT THE OWN MC THAT BREAKS HIS ASS BECOMING IN DANGER ALL THE TIME.
I go with his battle prowess, it is good, but he continues to gain power and more power but that prowess does not increase any more even if he is in the same small kingdom.
He has a divine demonic transformation ability that allows him to jump from the Transcendent Realm to the Saint Realm in battle prowess, but what does our MC do? He hardly ever uses it.
He has his Yang Art, but the way he uses it it is a waste, in one chapter he made over 50 types of shield with the Yang liquid that could resist Immortal Ascension being only at the True Limit. Now what does our MC do in battle? Only use 1 drop of yang liquid to form a shield knowing that you CAN use more drops and condense it into a single shield to make it resist more, the same with weapons, but it always only takes 1 drop.

Disclaimer: I picked this novel at around ch.500 having read the manhua version up until that part of the story.

Like many other cultivation novels there are plenty of skippable chapters, but overall it is an enjoyable story, especially if you can let a few chapters pile up and then binge read them.

  • The harem is kind of meh, there are a lot of love interest, or s*x partners, that the MC outright rejects allowing them to join the harem, some of the girls he rejects feel more qualified then the ones he acknowledges, like they interact more with the MC so their relationship feels more natural. I don't really care much for the presence of a harem, but I'm not against it either, tho I do kind of feel bad for the girls pining for the MC that don't get join his harem. The way I see it, either catch the one or catch 'em all.
  • I like the MC's distrustful and ruthless personality, specially in the later arcs. He isn't a sociopath, but he is also not a naive idiot (maybe he was early on, it has been a while so I'm having trouble remembering specifics, but if he was he grows out of it)
  • The world building is also pretty cool, not the best i've read, but better than most in the cultivation genre.
  • You will find a lot of the typical cultivation tropes here, but this novel is not the worst offender, and if you are looking for a cultivation novel then you already know what you are getting into.

Nothing new to say but here we go.

The novel started good but yeah then I started to dislike the MC as the arc continued. Reasons?

Spoiler

The MC told he was willing to kill people those who ploted against him, but guess what it turned out he would only kill men. If a woman wants to kill him here's what he would do. First overpower her, make her follow him, for no particular reason take a blow to save that girl, the girl would fall for him. Hurray a new harem member!!! Like seriously dude?

He is fearless against those who are a realm above him or two. But struggles to beat one of the same realm. Here's an example when the MC was on the 1st stage of a certain realm he defeated an 8th stage of the same realm. But when he grows to 4th stage, he struggles to beat another 8th stage expert. Like seriously dude?

He dislikes people looking down on him, but takes no step to show his worth. Here's an example. When they went to the dragon pond, he found it useless cause he already had gained a near perfect body, so it only helped him to cultivate faster. But the dragon pond holds symbolic value, the longer one stays the better the talent, so the MC left after half a day (the worst record holder congrats), the people then looks down on him for performing the worst. Atleast the pond helps in increasing his cultivation, he should have stayed longer. Even his parents cry seeing this poor result. He had the chance to be the best, gain help from elder, have a smoother path, but no he wanted to insult himself. The pond was atleast increasing his cultivation!!! He can't bear to waste his time there to gain some fame and make atleast his parents proud and probably increase his cultivation, but he wastes several day looking at the sea cause he loved the scenary.

The list is endless of his moronic act. Like drinking when surrounded with enemies, not dealing with people who tried to kill him, BECAUSE A TIGER WOULD NOT CARE ABOUT AN ANT'S PROVOCATION. LIKE SERIOUSLY DUDE!!!

EDIT: This is my baseline "average" CN action novel. It's good enough to be enjoyable but not outstanding enough to vehemently recommend. I'll keep reading it, but, as I said originally, whether you should depends on how much you like the genre.

Recommended: If you're a xianxia/xuanhuan fan, this is pretty good. If you're not or you're already tired of the genre, though, this is ultimately just more of the same.

The main character is a hardworking but untalented disciple of a relatively unimportant sect, until one day he finds that a... more>> random stone he picked up was actually a peerless divine item. It's nothing revolutionary, but Martial Peak is solidly above average as far as Chinese action novels go. You get all of the usual arrogant young masters, divine items, and aloof jade skinned beauties, but the protagonist is c*cky without being idiotic, the side characters have at least a semblance of personalities and motives, and most importantly the plot and the action move along without being overly drawn out or bloated.

Martial Peak was exciting and fun without getting overly "gimmicky". Of course, looking at the length, there's plenty of time for it to get stale later on, but from what's translated it's definitely one of my favorites and in my opinion it needs more attention. <<less

The Novel is not bad. But its no different then any CN but with a all-knowledgeable book this time. Considering the summary I had high expectations. But it hasn't even been 4 chapters and you can already predict who will fall in love with MC. What was the point of being a sweeper? I loved his character background but it all went to waste. He immediately becomes strong. The Characters are very unreasonable. He starts a lot of sh*t and only finds solution with strength. Ill have to agree. MC... more>> a ret*rd.
Spoiler

You visited another Sect and wanted to enter their mines. You don't even have the money to purchase. They had the right to treat you disrespectful but MC takes it like he was offended. He has no status whatsoever. Why the freak did she even take MC there? Talk about ignorance when she's the Master daughter... This is one of the many examples. Also that Xia girl turned her Master asleep and slipped out with MC. I just can't believe she would leave her best line of defense... Are you serious? When the MC has so many enemies... Your just asking to die. Although Meng says she's destined to be at the peak. She does not act like a martial artist at all..

[collapse]

Romance: Was ok at first but then you'll be so angry. I want to kill that b*tch. Worst part is that MC still accepted her as his wife. Wow really... I don't like to cuss but that's how angry I am everytime I'm reminded.
Spoiler

The first girl Xiao was chill. She was in very deep in the Sect and wore a mask. It gave an impression of mysterious beauty. But she showed her colors to soon into a shy beautiful girl... I didn't like it first but she became like a good wife. Even so her whole character is useless and unnecessary... The 2nd girl was the worst. She acted like a sl*t. She played with fire too much then becomes the Damsel in distress. She doesn't deserve the MC. But somehow the MC forgives her and takes her in... Sigh. Not going lie I do I kind of like her because of her child like personality. But in the end her Blood family is still benefiting from the MC. At least strip away from your family to show your sincerity. But yeah she deserved to die.
Sun Yan the 3rd girl was the cold beauty type. I like her but she fell in love too easily like the others... She doesn't really have much to show.

[collapse]

It feels like Author trying to make the MC look cool but still gives the feeling of naive.
Spoiler

The first chapters are really funny. Sun never felt like a villain but more like a funny character carrying a grudge. But yeah the ranking system makes no sense. Inner core disciples aren't worth much apparently. I also love the background story for the Sect Master. His dimples died and another betrayed. He deserves it though for showing favoritism to his disciple.

[collapse]

This is only a tad bit better then "Sword Spirit". I do like its comedy though. <<less

The best Chinese cultivation novel I've read. Yes, it had its flaws but from our entertainment perspective, it can provide you with a compelling story lines and great OP MC moments. It connects through all of the plot points, making you say 'i see, wow! Or nice connection'. Even the cultivation levels are connected in a string. From body tempering to soul tempering to at last creating a world within you, it is all shown clearly how and why. This makes it believable. If there could be any cultivation in... more>> this mortal world, it would definitely follow the same path as the martial Peak cultivation levels. <<less

The story is so-so, like many other Xuanhuan, harem oriented novels, weak to strong, full of plot armor where the MC always get out of trouble, no matter what. MC is very stoopid, stumbling around, only becoming smart at the last minute, or plot armor comes along to save his ass. LOL.

The translation on the other hand is crappy. Lots of typos, terrible grammar and constant usage of wrong words.

Part way in, I went to read from MTL because it was actually better than the translated crap I was reading.

This one started off alright, the MC gets an inheritance and eventually makes it his own, not solely relying on it, that is a nice start. You find out the reasons why he acts like he does and family relations that shaped him, gotcha a little character building it's a little trite and obvious but whatever some things are tropes for a reason. Next he leaves his small world to a bigger one and eventually takes it over, no surprises there. Then he goes into space and you can stop... more>> there, it doesn't get any better and even gets worse. I read through it just to see what happens but he gets separated from the people he cares about again and I got so fed up with it that I dropped it. It is an unfortunate cliche in cn novels that the MC and be around his wives/lovers for more than 100 chapters. It's like the authors cant fathom how to make them an interesting part of the story, they either end up as useless tag-alongs or dont have any real power no matter the level so the are just thrown out every so often for some bs power up. That could all change after they go to super space or whatever but it was irritating to see him become so strong in his universe only for the author to go nuh-uh super space exists and that means you suck and everything you've done so far is meaningless. Yes I understand that is what most crap authors do but I'd doesn't make it interesting.

I started to re-read this novel and got 1500 ish chapters in and man I forgot how Terrible the MC is. From him being a rapist at one extream to being a hypocrite on the other, there is truly nothing redeeming about him. I am particularly annoyed by the authors of this type of novel and their inability to describe a female character without talking about jade peaks and slender waists, congrats tou didn't describe her at all you just wrote with your d*ck in mind and nothing else.

The male characters are not any better being h**ny monkeys unable to look at any woman without drooling and chasing them around. It makes me believe that there are no attractive women wherever they are or possible they themselves have never seen a woman due to them never leaving their home.

So tldr novel bad don't read if you like entertaining story and characters. <<less

Novel is really good but who cares if it's to luck based that's the whole point you "experienced novel readers" the story is decent. Hate it when people don't even read past chapter 1000 and put bad reviews. I'm not saying it's the best but it's meant for the younger audience so why are you "experienced novel readers" reading it in the first place it's obvious right from the first 100 chapters that's it's meant for starters and it's doing a good job at being for starters.

I enjoyed it. It's well a written cultivation novel and has a great translation. I think it's a bit underrated. I'd give it a 4.2-4.5. There are some annoyances though:

The MC will make some obvious point and other characters will act like he's such a genius for saying that.

The author or translator uses the same descriptions over and over. There's an abundance of "fragrant" and "tender bodied" women in the story. Lots of "distinguished" faces as well.

The author also relies on filler. There's 5000+ chapters after all. If you do... more>> read it, I'd skim past the inheritance war arc (unless you enjoy it), as it's very long and doesn't end up being important for the story.

Oh and this should really be labelled as smut as there are a handful of chapters that have graphic s*x in them. <<less

ok as I managed to read all tl chapters and I'm up-to-date now so few words from me:

*cultivation is pretty simple here (compared for example to Apotheosis) so easy to comprehend all the most important aspects of this world

*MC is the most likeable character from all manhuas ive read, what's important - ruthless when it needs, I dont like too soft characters

*about harem - there is a lot of it, in every minor arc appears 'astonishing beauty' (btw literally every girl is described as astonishing beauty, if I recall there... more>> is one girl that was described as ugly but turns out that it was some side effect of her cultivation and inside she's also astonishing beauty, come on guys ;p), MC (or rather author) somehow picks his girls to harem randomly, I mean there was a lot of girls that relationship development with MC was much better and he didnt choose them while there were girls that development was poor and quick but they still joined to his harem (once even he took v**ginity of one of girls but later instead of taking a responsibility he just rejected and forgot about her

what shocked me a bit)

*repeative plot (20-30 chapters every time) :

mere (level of cultivation) decided to come here, kowtow 3 times and I spare your life -> you're courting death arrogant boy ->

villan attacks MC -> how is it possible that mere (culttivation level) didnt die -> villan beaten by MC > please spare me life -> MC kills villan ->

the end of minor arc. Meantime ofc he finds rare lost for thousand years treasure because he is lucky af.
    • often author reminds to us previous events from the novel, and it happens way too often that if you read all at once it's really annoying, and sometimes you gotta skip more than half of chapter, but I understand if someone is up-to-date with novel and reads 1-2 chapters per day, then obviously you dont remember what happened in the chapter that u read 2 years ago. In that case those reminders are quite handy.
But still I got into this novel and waiting for more.

btw, great quality of TL. <<less

It is overall good novel. One of the best cultivation novel for sure. Good points in my opinion:

+ intelligent and interesting protagonist. He always makes use of his advantages and doesn't make s*upid mistakes. Is generally honorable by paying back for received help and taking revenge on the enemies. Maybe this is a little too repetitive but I didn't get bored at all with this likable and honest main character.

+ easy to understand cultivation. Author doesn't use complicated vocabulary instead making progress satisfactory and cultivation visualizable.

+ good fights at every... more>> realm. Fighting is dynamic and well described.

+ new realms are different from each other and don't feel repetitive.

But this novel has some bad points as well:

- biggest is word counting. I mean by that making this long novel forcefully longer and longer. Main character is getting more and more adventures and then author is spending more and more time to remind reader of past encounters. It gets really bad later on. I had to skip half a chapter or more sometimes. But it is easy to spot these paragraphs and skip them if you don't need particular repetition.

- not interesting minor characters. Protagonist meets a lot of people but too much of them are jade beauties and arrogant young masters. It may be typical for this genre but is flaw nonetheless.

- not really interesting and shallow romance. A lot of time is spend on pursuing missing love interest and not much is about developing relationships. But it is still better than most of cultivation novels at this aspect. <<less

Its not great, but its better than most kind of Xuanhuan I have read.

Its not saying much, to me most rate a 3, this is maybe a 4... out of 10.

If you don't like the genre you won't like it. If you like the genre and are looking for something better than average, this might not be it. If your a fan of the genre style, then you'll be fine with it.

The story starts well, and its initial arcs are well done, making for a good read. However as the... more>> story drags on, flaws begin to show quite painfully. Old friends, powers, advantages that were gained in previous arcs are forgotten and lost without explanation and the MC needs to start all over again. Its a constant trend of requiring that the MC is the weakest while also being strong enough to overwhelm opponents much more powerful than he is. Mostly, its just a fault of the genre style.

This makes it read more like a collection of short stories that are seemingly plagiarizing itself than a cohesive novel. The faults in how the arcs don't connect well over time does get smoothed out, but it takes a long time to connect the dots, which can leave the reader lost in trying to figure out what the heck happened in the mean time.

However each arc is well done. The writing is pretty good, and the character dynamics brought up is worth following, just don't get too attached thinking they will always be present, or even return sometimes.

So I'd say its okay. Not bad, but not great. Worth the read if you like the genre, but not something to start reading if your new to it. <<less
