Shimotsuki-san Likes the Mob (WN)

When I met him, I realized that I was a ‘mob character’.

My childhood friend, my best friend, my stepsister, and everyone else fell in love with him.

But there was one girl who showed a completely separate face only in front of me.

I’m not sure what to make of it.

Normally she doesn’t talk much, but she’s all talk when she’s in front of me.

She smiles only at me.

Even though she was the main heroine, she fell in love with me, a mob character–this is my story.

This is a romantic comedy about a dull mob character.

I've only read the first volume, the plot itself was fine, but the author just have horrible character writing, there's not even a single likable persona in the whole cast.

Spoiler

The protagonist, self-styled "mob", can't spend a whole page without over monologuing, feels like 20 to 30% of the history is him rambling about something he said over three times last five minutes.

His sister/childhood friend/"best friend" couldn't be more caricaturesque bad, they barely exist in the history, the moment they saw the 'MC' they just ghosted the MC and said they would never have any relationship with any other man so the guy could appeal to the guy, his step-sister, in particular, barely ever sleeps in their own house and forbids the MC to talk they are related.

The 'harem-MC' has that plot armor on his for everything except the main heroine and acts like an a**hole

The heroine character and personality are also weak IMO

Remove this from the romance genre and put it in the psychological genre instead. There's barely any romance and all this talk about "x character's romantic comedy" being outright said as if the characters are aware they are in a story is just really off-putting. At best, this story could get the romantic subplot tag.

Mary's arc sucks something fierce and had no right to go on for as long as it did. 20 chapters would have sufficed for this smelly turd of a story. Mary as a character also pissed me off so much, she is one of the few antagonists in a non action story whom I actually wish death upon. She really is that bad.

the romcom element is "okay" level. the first arc is quite entertaining to read.

but when Mary arc came in, everything become much havier to follow. the problem that follows around Ryuzaki's harem turned from mundane, to much psychological.

we indeed showed how Kotaro would solve the problem and countered every scheme. but in turn we are showed how big the gap of interpersonal skill and intelligence in Kotaro's persona. and it's quite weird seeing how Kotaro become like that with his average intelligence he showed at the first arc (he's more... more>> emotional driven guy).

as for character :

Shimotsuki : I see her as a sweet girl at first. but the yandere factor a little bit ruined her personality (it might be due to my own opinion) she's a talk active, or for me she's like super duper naggy girl (her family too) it's sadly shown in her interaction with Kotaro.

Kotaro : a self proclaimed "mob" in time he's a secret interpersonal psychological genius (lol) but he could turned into a lump of stone that always do alot of inner monologues when facing Shimotsuki (and her families) which is soo weird.

storywise,

in some parts it's an ordinary school life, but in the other chapter it's full of deeper and havier problem (trick and scheme) that for me, it's such unnecessary thing to escalate problem to those degree. in turn Shimotsuki thrown out of the picture, and back as a little comic relief.

The romance,

i can't say it's sugary. it's just a romance who seems sugary from the outside, but in fact it's cringeworthy due to the extremity of Shimotsuki yandere personae and "the peeble on the roadside" personality of Kotaro which make "depiction" of this couple is quite hard to imagine. the interaction are one sided, which lacks of strawberry atmosphere.... in short... it's so weird.

truly a series with a weird couple. <<less

5 mins in and I got brain damage, flashing bo*bs, trying to seduce acting like prost*tues and the MC be like I should be the one in his position. I am dropping it I got to know the personality of the MC 'a jealous little b*tch'. If he had more of an indifferent personality. I would've surely given it a read. Otherwise its a torture.

I’m trying to read this despite all of the comments because I just finished what little chapters the manga has, I’m so curious what’s gonna happen next but the site suddenly “script error with ionCube php” thingy. Now I guess I’m stuck until it’s fixed.

now for this mob from the story range I just read, my summary so far, well I’m not good with words for roundabout way to point things out, so let’s say this guy has a girl teasing his d*ck with her p*ss*, yet instead he thrust... more>> in he went limping and shrinking. That’s how frustrating this guy is. <<less

I’m sorry I just cant.
Spoiler

The MC/Mob is such a bit*h even after getting with Shimotsuki, still thinking he is the villain in Ryoma’s story just bc another heroine came along. Like bro, why do you give a shit, you have the one you want just leave your s*upid ass delusions behind and work on your relationship with her.

I really feel like dropping this now, it’s agonizing forcing myself to read it.

If you read carefully Mary's part during the School Festival,
you will know the truth.

Mary initially fell in love with Ryu, but that changed after seeing Ryu who was only selfish, and rejected his confession,
because Ryu saw Mary as an outlet and not Love,
and also that she was really in love with Koutarou, who saw her as a caring and affectionate person who kept her from feeling bored.

So far Mary has always been bored with things that she easily achieved,
that's why Mary felt... more>> something hurt and when she was told by Koutarou, she acted aggressively and tried to kiss Koutarou.

that's how I see it, in short. <<less

This novel has a interesting way of using the matter of perspective, since the main character is thrusted to the role of a"mob", or more of a secondary character, equivalent of love rivals of the MC of a romcom, like Mikawa Kai from Seto no Hanayome (not personality-wise, position-wise). There are reasons for this and why characters' viewpoints are twisted to that they're viewing it under the lense of romcoms and their character development are tied into it (especially Kotaro, Kirari and that other "heroine")

Spoiler

The character comparing themselves and their situation to LN romcoms is part of the problem that gets solved later. It was intentional to have the character think that way. Kirari and Azusa arcs were pretty good. Kirari tackles of the issue of being true to yourself while Azusa tackles the idea of replacing a lost loved one and the pain of turndown and moving forward past her heartbreak.
Kotaro's arcs were also pretty nice too, tackling mainly on self-worth and growing out of the romcom perspective and negative viewpoint

[collapse]

Now for its flaws.

The story has some pretty big problems. I think the author drags some of the arcs too long and some of past events keeps being dredged up. You don't need to repeat it like 3 times, people get the idea as to what happened. Frankly those events should've been covered only in the "recollection" arc. Filler arcs also gets dragged out WAY too much, it was honestly annoying and painful to read them.
Spoiler

Also characters like Yuzuki really needed more fleshing out, I know her character development was brought about by Ryouma (since she is framed as the central heroine for Ryouma's "story", her character development is more or less off-screen which is why Kotaro left it to him to fix her arc/problem), but quite frankly it's still the weakest, just chalking it up to "she has a strong core" in the end, the other two "main" heroine arcs were better. It probably would've been better if she had a big "fall" arc too like the two (probably tackle on that personality of her wanting to be needed but it seems like Ryouma already fixed that during those off-screen moments, at least for now. It would be interesting if Ryouma didn't choose her and chose Kirari though, I can picture the author making scenarios about it). I think Shimotsuki herself could also needs a better fleshing out too. She's a bit too "developed", leaving only little to expect something more from her and whenever there's a development for her, the pace is kind of rushed.

[collapse]

Overall it has a pretty interesting take on the RomCom perspective and had a lot of potential, but it failed to deliver or messed on certain parts a lot. Also, did I already mention those fillers were annoying? <<less

The story is good when its the MC and his female lead... the other girls in his life are just pure tr*sh... even the sister is tr*sh... I am more surprised he forgive his step sister... because he also has the right to treat her as a stranger if he wanted to since they aren't really family.... and tbh the chapters where its about the other tr*sh girls, I rather just skip them... since most of them are insignificant to the main story...

It's a subversion of the harem romcom genre. As is common in subversions (for other examples see Neon Genesis Evangelion (mecha genre), Puella Magi Madoka Magica (magical girl genre) or Doki Doki Literature Club (also harem romcom)), the normal roles and the characters that inhabit them are often somehow corrupted and twisted, and standard hero-villain relationships are turned upside down and problematized in various ways. Very enjoyable read if you are familiar with the common tropes of the genre, in my opinion.

It’s no 1*, but it’s also not 5*. I’m being decently generous with a 4*.

Despite the MC not being the ‘harem protagonist’ he certainly thinks a lot like one. He’s kinda s*upid, spineless, and irritating, but with enough moments of intelligence, courage, and involvement to keep me reading for long enough to get tired of it before I put it down. There was no one moment of ‘this is crap’ that made me put it down. I just felt like there wasn’t a point.

I gave this 4 purely because the FMC character is cute. Im not talking about her design but more to her attitude, she's so talkative for a main heroine and I find it refreshing, as someone aspiring to write a web novel myself I got a few inspiration just by looking at how she talks

The story is interesting as much as weird it is. The MC is a bit of a downer but maybe he gets better as shown in glimpses of future chapters in the raws. Its basically an okay read if you have free time. Its a bit similar to another fantasy novel where MC feels like mob chara.
