Do you know how this world ends?

Become the hero and defeat the 72 Demon Lords. The game that was boasted as the absolute hardest strategy game, 『Dungeon Attack』.

I used to be the ‘hero’ who had accomplished everything in this game, but after answering a suspicious survey, I found myself in the game as the weakest Demon Lord, 「Dantalian」.

With only my eloquent tongue and my memories of conquest as a hero—.

In order to survive as Dantalian. I shall tear this world apart.

Even though it might seem as a good one at first, you steadily understand that it is not. Seemingly mature at first glance, with an MC who can easily kill and plots stuff left and right, it quickly gets boring and plain. You can read it to kill time, but it isn't something one can call a "good read".

Stop being so stuck up is what i'd like to say to people who doesn't even finish reading half of the whole story in WN I mean. Judging too early for the MC has daddy issues? It will solve on it's own in later chapters don't worry. It's called plot development so why keep fussing?

Realistically speaking this novel has more has to say than your brain can think of. What? Are you a genius for finding fault from this novel or are you attention who*e that gets turned on by... more>> the attention you get?

First and last thing. This novel is a master piece. It is closer to real than other "Transported to another world" novels. It is one of the best. So I dare say to those who thinks they are genius and those fault finders out there, read the half of this novel but I guess it's hard for most to understand the mind of a genius. Like the saying goes "Geniuses often typically misunderstood".

Try to do better job at finding fault not just some shallow remarks and some things that your puny minds can't understand. All in all the story is logical and VERY Dark, Gritty, Cruel, Violent, Psychological but still this novel knows about human nature when push to the limit. Well Written, Elaborate Writing, Realistic Relationships, Good Translation, Complex Relationships, Deep Story, and Element of Surprises. <<less

I honestly don't know how much better this story can get.

It's twisted, cruel, unforgiving, action-packed, and full of dark humour and plot-twists.

I love it. I love the characters. I love the story. I love the world. Just... incredible.

... more>> Better than a lot of Western novels I've read.

I love MCs who use brains over brawn and Dantalion's mind is a dark, and I mean DARK, place of cunning, scheming twists and turns. He is utterly bad-ass in a way that has absolutely nothing to do with physical strength and can wipe the floor with his opponents with his words alone. There were several moments that had me on the edge of my seat and made me gasp.

I usually find harems annoying what with women falling for the MC if he so much as breathes in their direction but in this case, the author made it completely realistic. If you're looking for the kind of lovey-dovey romance with cloud-nines and rainbows... prepare to get your dreams crushed. The romance is dark, gritty, and so twisted it made my head spin. And so, SO good.

(For those who want to know, the MC and main ML get together pretty early on in the story - towards the end of the first volume, I think. No misunderstandings or agonising 'oh, I want you, but I can't have you', etc. Just straight-up 'I am attracted to you, so what next?' It was very unexpected and refreshing.)

If you love epic plot-twists and scheming MCs like I do, you're going to ADORE this.

I don't want to say anything that might spoil the story, but READ IT. You won't regret it. <<less

My cup of f*ucking tea. Chaotically beautiful. I can't understand how others, with their subtle minds, can't follow the story progression and the character development, particularly of the MC. He was transported into the game which will be doomed unless he stops the hero. In order to achieve this, he has to utilize his talent to gain enough authority to achieve that goal, which is to prevent the continent's, if not the world's, destruction. Simple. F*cking. Plain. 5 stars. A recommend read. Although wth is v6

This is opinionated and biased

One of my favorite novel, the MC has f*cked up personality, psychopathic bastard and getting worse as the chapter goes. The novel start slow, s*upid, and not too dark, which is not cup of tea but as the story goes it is getting darker, if you like happy go lucky MC with happy storyline, don't read this novel. But if you like manipulative, twisted, psychopathic, cunning, and scheming bastard, you should give this novel a try until 3rd or 4th volume.

Honestly, it seems like the author had a very different idea for a novel from the beginning to volume 5. Don't get me wrong, it's still good, but just very different. Volume 1 gets you hooked with this lazy but intensely smart (and a bit warped) character who gets thrown into a game world of a game that he beat. Only now he has to play the weakest villain in an attempt to save that world from destruction. In the later volumes he's no longer lazy, he's motivated and pretty... more>> much a Batman villain (think of the Joker). The first volume has systems, and relies heavily on his ingenuity of the one part of the menu he can use. In the later volumes, the menu may get a sentence stating that it still exists but it's not important. That's kind of the problem, the prologue and V1 are completely different from the rest in everything presented afterwards. Even so, it's a breath of fresh air compared to the usual dreck that gets released on a daily basis. It's almost Shakespearean and feels like a real western novel.

Volume 1 gets 5 stars. I have nothing really to say about it other than it was a roller coaster from beginning to end and gets you hooked.

Volume 2 was the weakest by far for me, in that I didn't enjoy it after coming off from Volume 1. It's not filler, like other reviews say. There's character development and plot progression but not in the way that was expected coming off from the first volume but it was a slog due to the dramatic shift in Dantalian's personality. The game gimmick is still present here. 3 stars

Volume 3 changes the writing style again and for the most part stays that way until the current volume (will it change again? I doubt even the author knows). The TL believes that the change was to show Dantalian's descent into madness but I'm not so sure. I think the author received criticism from v2 and felt that he couldn't continue that way so he changed it. It was a good change I think. 4 stars

Volume 4 adds black pages which most of the time are either used to show internal subconscious thoughts or the murmuring of the rabble. The largest change from what I remember is that now the other characters in his entourage get to play the narrator for longer and more stretches of time. This is a good change because it fleshes them out more. They are all crazy mu*derers. 4 stars

Volume 5 again continues the trend of V3 and V4 and stays the same. It seems that the author has found his story and his style and are sticking to them. I'm looking forward to volume 6. 4 stars <<less

This novel has nothing to do with actual" dungeon defence", rather its a war of demons (started by the MC) vs mankind.

The characters and pretty much whole story is pretty dark, almost as though this story is written by some psychopath. If you are into this kind of things (countless death, war crimes, politics) then this novel is perfect for u. If not, turn away now to preserve your innocence.

Honestly, I have no clue on the why some people hate the MC so much. As I was scrolling down the reviews, I've been seeing people call the MC a psychopath or calling him mentally ill. They were even cursing about how ungrateful the MC was or how the story is really dark. I'm not sure how you survived on the internet if you're easily triggered by dark themes, but that's another topic.

Anyway, in my opinion, the MC is more of a person who's vengeful and a product of his... more>> environment, if that makes any sense. Even though the gaming mechanics were ditched after volume one, the series over all is very well written and translated. I'd rate it a 5/5 for reasons of:
• The psychotic MC is really different from other typical MCs.
• The author writes the perspectives of the individual characters very well.
• The author does interesting things that the translator portrays beautifully (The black images)

Of course there are many other reasons to why it's amazing, but I feel like it's better to understand if you try to read all the volumes yourself. You may not like it at first, but the author's writing develops with the volumes. Please do give it a try!

Shout out to the translator, Shalvation, thank you so much for your work and please continue translating this! <<less

As this is only a half-finished product as of yet, it's strange to write a review in and of itself, but I might as well, since there are some misunderstandings and misinterpretations I feel I have to clear up right away. Sorry for my attitude, but it's just the way I am. If you decide to read other reviews as well, I seriously ask you to read what's below the spoiler tag. Please. If only reading this review, feel free to ignore it. (Also, sorry for text editing breaking lines,... more>> don't know why, and can't take it out.)

Spoiler

Though I do not wish to offend anyone, I will always strive to call a duck a duck. Not beaked animal, or household bird. And some things in other (most notably the negative) reviews are plain s*upid bull, which have to be corrected IMHO.

As for the name of the series, Dungeon Defense. Another reviewer claimed it has nothing to do with Dungeon Defense, which is correct. The title is a wordplay on the original game - Dungeon Attack. Whereas our protag was the attacker (hero) in the game, he was sent into this world, placed on the other side of the chess board (demons), and tasked with doing the opposite of what he did in the game to turn around its conclusion, hence not to 'attack', but to 'defend'. So, if you expect strategy to protect his dungeon like in an RTS (like other novels, where the dungeon is the actual place where things happen), then look for another novel. But please, at least realise a simple wordplay from the first two chapters....

Another point of problem was the decision windows. It was clearly, and I mean word-by-word clearly stated that decision windows come up during times of important crossroads. Think of it in terms of dating sims, but written in a guide. It has nothing to do with the actual plot as a mechanically operating extension, or so-called 'game element'. It has to do with simply alerting the protag of notable intersections of possible plot routes, and the way gained stats (which cannot be seen due to not having the related blessing) are automatically distributed to shape his abilities (which are mostly related to eloquence, based on his initial solution method of the tutorial). Are people even reading things before forming a half-assed opinion?

Also, please allow me to settle a minor grudge. He

does not select anything. The option shows up as an indicator to show possible resolutions. Once he does something, and the related conclusion is reached by his actions, the option he chose to implement

automatically gets selected and turns into a description of his results. Am I too s*upid to question it? Nope, because I can

read and

interpret properly, there's nothing to question, thank you very much.

As for Volume 2: do not be misled and please read it properly. It is more or less both a setup for the interactions between the protag and a key character, and the modus operandi behind the relationship between the protag and his girl. It is not skippable content, and is important in reaching the 'conclusion' of how the protag sees the world. Also, many important philosophical questions are answered regarding the protag's world view, which are needed for the blooming of his character into a megalomaniac that fears nothing while marching towards his purpose.

Another review complained that the prologue and the latter chapters are like two different novels. As for the prologue: please go and search 'in medias res', and 'flashback'. As I said, this is an unfinished product. Sure, he's weary, but that was two years after he arrived in the world. As of now, we've barely hit the one year landmark. Sorry, but this complaint is as if the person read the currently unwritten novel.

Also, as for lazy days. It was, once again, clearly stated that he was learning all knowledge he didn't know from the game. As for sleeping so much - he was waiting for the fateful day the Black Death spread. Again, it was clearly, letter by letter, stated. Are people unable to interpret what they read? Anyway, I'd even wager that overemphasising his own laziness was in order to screw around with Lapis. Sure, he is lazy, but in truth, after the initial information gathering is complete, we can't say he's a bum, right? This ties into mood - his mood was lazy when he was lazing around, being

immersed in it. As that was the point, most of his inner monologue gathered around this concept. It would be somewhat of a strange inconsistency if a doctor in surgery cutting up someone were to be thinking about fluffy kittens playing around in a cushioned basket, right?

Furthermore, am I seriously the only one who noticed the 'Unreliable narrator' tag in the description? People, please do a search and read what it means. And try to read the novel always keeping this in mind. (In my opinion, the person who added that tag was the real hero here, to be honest.)

And for the last time - please do not label people who can properly enjoy something through actually reading and interpreting a text, and maybe even think about what they read a little, as happy-go-lucky idiots who are fine with whatever they read, simply because they can enjoy something that you can't (personally, I'm seriously offended about this, even more so than having to see an actually good novel being called some profanities I won't copy here).

To conclude, these grumbles don't wish to suggest that all negative criticism was wrong, as it boils down to personal preference in the end. Neither do they aim to say all positive critique is right, as, once again, it boils down to personal preference. With this, I've said all I wanted to say.

[collapse]

Now, as for the novel itself. If you didn't read the spoiler, I'll quickly summarise main points for you:

    • No, it's not about defending a dungeon. That doesn't mean the title has no real meaning. It simply means a title may reflect many things, one of which (obviously not in this case) can be the contents to which the title refers.
    • No, the game elements are scarce, as only a single one could be chosen, and it's not a menu-type game element which can be controlled, but a simple indicator that has a reason and worth for the story and the protag nonetheless.
    • No, you should not skip Volume two. In fact, do not skip anything, even intermissions.
    • Please keep in mind to read this novel as a giant flashback which is currently in progress, or consider the prologue to be a glimpse into sometime in the novel when at least 60%, at most 80% of the story already happened, and expect many changes instead of a static, pre-ordered protag.
This novel for me was like one side of a coin, where the other side is Madan no Ou to Vanadis (great story btw), but in this novel, the driving force behind the happenings isn't the 'sunny side up' of sentient beings, but the disgusting, 'burned below' side. The reason megalomaniacs, sociopaths, mass mu*derers and other types of nasty are the focus of this series is that not only the setting, but the entire novel and its story are solely focused on the horrendous, black ugliness deep inside of humanity (and also demons in the novel) as a whole. To others, this might be revolting. To me, it's actually very enjoyable, as I find it much more honest. In Madan, 'I shall beat your valor and mettle with more valor and more mettle!', whereas in DD, 'I shall beat your darkness and fire with a deeper darkness and more volatile fire!'. Nice ideals in this novel are only the prey of the ugly truth of the world, which leans towards a bit of a dystopistic world, but nevertheless much more realistic and interesting (whether you like it or not). Such is the protag, and such is the world itself. The protag is not some hero - he's just a more carnivorous beast on the very top of the food chain consisting of 90% carnivores and maybe 10% idealistic herbivores whose fate is annihillation, as soon as an opportunity arrives. This is true demagogue thinking, people, which will most likely ascend into the highest realm of such literature, seeing the

superfluous man model's fantasy variant, that the protag fits in the prologue.

The story is dark, gory, and crazy sometimes. I advise people with a more refined literature sense (possibly a more extensive knowledge of classical literature, most notably Byron and Pushkin), and those knowledgeable in psychology to immediately pick up this series, as they will be able to comprehend the subtleties of this novel and enjoy it very much. However, people who are weak to gore and psychological drama and tragedy should avoid it altogether. Expect every kind of dark and disgusting emotion sentient creatures may develop to be on parade here, on a bargain sale level.

Also, some suspension of disbelief is necessary, I won't deny that, but the notion that this series has plot holes or inconsistencies is ridiculous to begin with, simply due to the time structure of the novel, and the fact that it's not concluded as of yet.

All in all, for me at least, an immensely enjoyable experience, a peek into different minds of madness, and a very dynamic progression towards a probably grim, dark and apocalyptic conclusion. <<less

This is a story about psychopaths, or at least it becomes one.

I'd say that its written very well, especially amongst other light novels and the like and the translator does a competent job retaining that however, after a lot of page turner stuff in volume 1 it all began to break down for me.

It has an interesting premise and a dynamic, tangible setting but not one character i'd want to root for in the long run. Everyone is an unapologetic ass hole with no long term goals for the reader... more>> to relate to. Intelligent, amoral, twisted world views, scheming, this is how I'd describe anyone in the main cast and these traits only seem to strengthen as the series continues.

I can somewhat see the appeal but there was no fun for me past volume 1. I stuck around till the end of volume 2 because of the goodwill the beginning had earned but was let down. This series seems to relish in a dark twisted atmosphere with no reprieve. <<less

Volume one was 5 stars.

Volume 2 completely disregarded everything that the author put into the MC's personality and turned him into a generic boy who found a girl he likes. Literally everything the MC did contradicted himself. Volume one was all about how he had no interest in women, or anything at all, he just manipulated people so he could survive and take it easy, and volume 2 was about how much he loves this girl who is working with him.

It's like the author couldn't think of a plot as... more>> intricate as volume one, so turned the novel into a typical romance soap opera drama. Very disappointed, it had so much potential. <<less

This is seriously a great novel, and a study in character development and madness.

Beware, this story is really, really dark. If that is not your cup of tea, I would still recommend you read until vol.2 and see how you feel. This novel deserves the chance.

But I can't help but be disappointed at some reviewers.

They rate this novel 1/5 or 2/5 because "vol.2 threw them off" with a sudden madness from the MC. For me it is clear they didn't read vol.1 with the required attention. The darkness in his... more>> heart was there all along. He said himself many times that he was twisted, and even his father called him a Devil. Some readers just underestimated it. MC is a cold, calculating bastard. But he knows himself the best. So if he admits he is twisted, you can be pretty darn sure he is ABSOLUTELY INSANE. The thing is, in the real world he couldn't display his madness. He didn't have the power to do so, so he supressed it. But the signs were all there. And we see him turn mu*derous from the get go once he gets into the body of Dantalian. You could say that he was forced to do so, but he showed no hesitation. This was not even his first time killing. He had already done so in the real world, mind you. And this is just the first few parts of the book, he does more dubious things afterwards. All sugar coated in nice logic to explain his actions. But don't be fooled. He is just trying to justify himself. In vol.2 we start to see the REAL Dantalian. So, yeah, just read the book with more attention next time. Learn to read between the lines. You will appreciate this to a whole new degree. Other than that, story is great, characters are well rounded and faithful to their personalities and they develop really well. Politics and scheming (is that redundant?) are what makes the plot move forward, although I would say that the focus itself is Dantalian's descent into darkness, as well as his followers'. Again, this is a really dark novel.

If you have the stomach to read this, it will certainly be on your top 10 list. No doubt. I recommend this to anyone, even if it is just to give a try. 5/5 without a doubt. <<less

some people use a fusion card combining Hachiman with Lelouch, and thus Dantalian is born (though the fusion seems to be disturbed midway as the result is rather twisted XD)

The MC is a genius, but twisted, it's like Sora from No game no life but without ever meeting Shiro, a genius that is so messed up in the head because of environment (and mainly his parent) and no one to stop or share his view of this rotten and disgusting world, though in the end he did meet them,... more>> those fellow genius psychos that he could acknowledge, sadly it was already too late (?) (as I personally like him as he is, tho if he ever meet someone just like how Sora has Shiro before he turned twisted, it would still be interesting but not as refreshing or original as it is) as there is no turning back, he reminded me of Light from Death Note but even step above that :D

a very nice and refreshing read, I got addicted, so much bliss ~

P.S. Light spoiler, please dont get deceived by the MC, he might be twisted but still very rational, there was a time when I thought he was seriously insane, tho im not the only one as some people drop this or harshly criticize him for being crazy later, he almost got me there ;/ <<less

My first and the only review on NUF (at least until there is some other amazing novel release).

Dungeon Defense is simply one of the best novel that I ever read.

If I need to explain Dungeon Defense in one sentence, it's like hmm... if you want to know what would happen if Lelouch vi Britannia coming/transported to Another World.

The MC is very much remind me to Lelouch vi Britannia, which superb with using his INT, acting, words and strategy to advance to his goal. He prefer to use schemes,... more>> tactics, and sly method instead using brute force, heck I don't think he is as strong as the other Isekai MC titles.

The story is built well from beginning till vol.3 ending. The author did well to create plots, symbolism, and conflicts on this novel. I like the ways the author set-up the setting of the heroines and the ways of our MC went to obtain them.

Spoiler

As the example is during the war in vol.4. The story on vol.4 is the very good and entertaining. I enjoyed how the 'heroines' moving the story without the MC. And also, how one of the heroine solving her past. (Laura is best daughter!).

[collapse]

The heroines is also have same-vibe with the MC. They are abnormal and won't hesitate to slaughter other lives. Thus, you won't see the usual "always guaranteed-happy-duppy" story which normally shows in other isekai harem series.

There is one thing that made me disappointed, this novel is K-novel, so there is no way it'll get anime in the future. At least, they already released one drama CD so far, but well, that's all. (As far as I want to read the RAW, but alas, this novel is not in Japanese language... It's outside my expertise. orz).

ANYWAY, I'll recommending this novel if you're tired with "normal isekai", "happy harem story", and "OP MC who dominating the story from beginning till end". And prepare yourself to watch on how Blood and Authority combine into one EPIC story. :) <<less

Neither the harem-ish situation, nor the dog killing part are reason to stop reading this series. The harem part was stated in the genre and predicted in the prologue (duh). And the dog killing? A very nice change after reading all the Chinese novels, where the MC is just brawl and no brain who gets offended over every unimportant thing and can't forgive others.

The best part of this story is that you get the feeling that the characters are alive. They change. The author uses mental struggles as plot-devices and does not resort to...
You offend me.
I'm weak.
I train.
I kill you.
Repeat.
... to advance the plot.

And for those who cares about whether it's a harem or not, I would argue... more>> that it's not a harem. Since while he is surrounded by girls in the end, non of them fight for his attention.

Worth to try and since not a lot is translated yet, read the first book before deciding whether to continue or not. <<less
