Once she woke up, Gu Xuejiao became the arrogant and willful stepsister of the book’s male lead. Her specialty resided in breaking the relationship between the male and female lead… she is the nth female character.

Gu Xuejiao thought about this character´s ending. A desolate, abhorrent annihilation… and decided it’s better to continue to practice the Wu San workbooks she just finished in her last life.

The Cheng family watched in alarm:

The girl who was rebellious, and only served to let others worry; asked with a simple expression:

“Do you think it’s better for me to apply to Tsinghua University or Beijing University?”

Cheng family: ….

This seems to be a promising novel. So far only on chapter two, so will update this as it goes along. The main character has transmigrated into a book, which is pretty basic for these types of novels. However, instead of the typical female lead transmigrates into a cannon fodder whose main focus is to bring down the original, this female lead is a bookworm. Her main focus revolves around school. Avid to see what this novel may bring in the future ^^

I can't get over the age gap. ... more>>
Spoiler

A 25 years old falling in love with a 16 years old student is wrong even when he never done anything s*xual with her. The way he talked about how she will bloom, getting ripe, the way he count the year until when she become legal sent me chill. He also waited her at her school...

[collapse]

The story would be soooo much better if the FL ends up with her tablemate for awhile. Because this good boy also deserves happiness. Then when their relationship ended, then only she ends up with the ML..

FL is someone who is extremely into education. So 80% of the book is about doing school works and assignment. I skipped some text because they get sooo repetitive.

ML is the typical extremely perfect ML. Also someone who hates women, and the FL is the first woman in his life that he likes that's why he is so obsessed with her. Still no excuse for his behaviour.

2nd ML, Yi Tianyu is my favorite character. He is the most alive and normal between these 3. He's not perfect, but his love towards the FL is so sincere. Unfortunately for him, author want him to pine for the FL forever. He didn't get his own happy ending

The translators did a great job with the translations. Tq very much!! <<less

Honestly would prefer to see the original girl be the MC of the story. This novel is so bland and unseasoned it feels like im reading how boiled chicken taste. As is this story borders on "problematic" since the ML is an adult while the MC is basically a minor despite being an adult in her original life. I hated how MC kept crapping on the original host at the beginning of the book. Red hair and cute makeup??? Why was she acting like she dressed like the undertaker. Seeing... more>> a high risk romance between the OG host and her step brother would be so intriguing especially if the OG was able to handle her own problems like a rebirth scenario.

This novel on the other?

Plain rice has more flavor. Typical all powerful virg*nal CEO who hates everyone and struggles with everything and basic white lotus MC who's only personality trait is that she likes studying.

Would never read again.

Also hated how the translators diced up the chapters so much. The novel felt too long <<less

Followed until 63 of the translated, mostly skimming at that. 2.5 stars. Just barely readable.

The only interesting thing on this novel is the premise and there is a lot to feel upset about.

The interactions are either uninteresting, boring or annoying. There is no satisfaction to be felt, you get the distinct feeling of watching a ridiculous play unfold right in front of your eyes. Of course, many novels have it all the same, but the difference in writing highlighted it here. Inevitably, this rubs off on the characters, none of... more>> which feel particularly likeable, MC included.

Developing on the characters, I won't say they're hateful but they're definitely worthy of scorn. Her mother truly isn't to blame for what happens, all things considered, but the author has succeeded in painting her as neurotic and harsh on her daughter. Her classmate, far from being a cute jock, is more like an annoying bully. MC feels like a withering flower dangling from one place to another, and it's really hard to sympathize with her or even feel pity. The teachers are simply disgusting with how they treat students as goods to be passed around, blatantly to their faces.

Then comes the ML. While I'm not terribly bothered by a 33 year old man having a romantic interest on a girl that should be 16-18 years old (I forgot the age), all things should follow a proper procedure. A person double your age, and on top of that a very rich and powerful person, compared to a youth with no backing and family issues, is already very unfair with the other party in terms of power dynamics. It's very easy to manipulate and plant whatever idea you want on the other's head, and ML does exactly that. The fact he's never been interested in other women and suddenly felt smitten by a young girl due to a life-saving grace, followed by his stalking and subtle manipulation feels irksome. It doesn't help that his parents are old guys howling for their grandchildren. So while I held off on judging ML's character, it's really hard to hold a good opinion of him.

This could be a 4 star novel if things were done more carefully, since at least the family issues portrayed keep things interesting. But the way it's written makes things just too annoying to see. <<less

Reading our FL thought make me feel like hearing some random teacher demeaning my teenage dream and just told me to forget about anything else except studying.

I understand that many of our youth thoughts are wrong or maybe delusional and far from reality, but that doesn't mean it's unimportant. It's part of our growth, part of our life, and we can't just skip it and run straight to adulthood. True that we need assistance through that youthful year, to correct our worldview to become a better person, but not in... more>> the way that we just should stop being a teenage.

In my opinion, our FL is far too mature I even get a teacher or parent vibe from her thoughts. She (or should I say the author?) have very strong opinions about life value, think highly about herself and demeaning others in a very subtle way. <<less

Rating: I'm not sure how to rate this story. Storywise, it has great execution, but it's very formulaic in terms of the themes/tropes used. So, 2/5 in originality and interesting ideas, 4/5 in execution, and a little less than 3/5 average. I added a bit on top of that for the supporting characters, so it's 3.3/5 from me. Be aware that I don't care whether a story is romance-dominated or not, hence why I can enjoy this. If you're looking for romance, this story barely has any for the first... more>> half (and more), so that can certainly earn it a demerit for you romance lovers; I won't be surprised by 2/5 and 3/5 ratings.

Supporting Characters: To add a bit more comment about the characters here, there are the usual cannon fodders trying to aim their firepower at the MC, but apart from that, there are also other supporting characters that feel normal, just like normal people, you know? Xue Jiao's stepfather, for example, is a great dad—compared to most stepfathers, heck, even bio dads in c-novels? He's a god among men. And he's not even superhuman! He just does his best to be a good person. It's similar with one of her classmate's father.

MC: Xue Jiao transmigrated into a minor villainess character in a story she'd read and became Gu Xuejiao. She doesn't care about romance and just wants to do what she couldn't do in her real life—seriously study to get into a good university and beyond! Of course, some jealouse cousins who never liked her tried to step in her way, as did her half sister, but that's the pretty standard c-novel face-slapping subplots.

Character Design Issues: I don't have many issues with the ML, mostly because I see the problem from a Doylist than Watsonian choice. Consider this, the writer wants to make the ML a genius and super student so he can help the MC study. Alright, so he has to be older, right? Yeah. MC's body is chronologically 15/16 at the beginning (mentally university age). It would've worked just fine if he was, say, 18 or 20. But, the writer and/or editor also wants ot make him a CEO/captain of industry type! Then, there's two options available. They can make a 22 yo CEO of a family company (wouldn't be the first irrationality of this type that we see in a webnovel), or try for realism and make him older, like 27.

The writer took the second choice.

This is what I mean by Doylist/meta-narrative choice. Whether the ML is a CEO or say, just a rich second-generation currently raising his startup company through VC/PE funds while in university, it doesn't make a lick of difference to the MC's life. Heck, they even wrote the ML to have psychological issues with touching women in general, and he has negligible s*x drive that he'd never considered it an issue even as his parents panic about it. The MC manages to be an exception because she saved him from a near-death situation once, and thus his aversion was somehow reset under the life-or-death situation he barely escaped. In the real world, how many 27 yo CEOs have never even had a girlfriend??

So, yeah, he's a unicorn. Almost impossible to exist in real life.

This age gap also creates issues in interaction. He likes being able to see her from time-to-time, even if not meet up. If he was just a high school or university student, he can see her when she arrives at school or passing in the corridors between classes. Or he can see her if he passes by her school gate when she gets out of school, and then just leave. Maybe make him live on the same street, with a hobby of staring at her house on lonely nights. The way the writer channels this in-story is having him occasionally stop in front of her house and just watch it for glimpses of her.

We, the readers, know that he's mostly harmless, and even his behaviour had always been highly supportive of Xue Jiao, no matter what she wanted to do, regardless of whether he liked it or not. This is why I don't see him as grooming her; he gives her all the options she wants, expands them, even, instead of restricting her world to mainly himself. Yet on paper, his behaviour is textbook (occasional) stalker. I just.... *facepalms*

Character design fail, basically.

TL;DR: Reborn girl Xue Jiao wants to be the overachiever she couldn't be in her previous life as a poor orphan. She finds a high-level mentor in the form of the ML, who's interested in her once she saved his life. More than half of the story mostly covers her studying and competition—shounen tournament arc, Math Olympiad/Gold Medal style! Some rich people family drama is also involved, and the MC is annoyed with them for taking time off her studying. Such a hassle.

Come for the face-slapping/tournament arc of the genius of hard work, stay for the heartwarming family dynamics. ML is the obligatory CEO love interest, though his character is at least more interesting than the rando domineering CEO often found.

Not recommended for: People who are still traumatised by their math class (I got flashbacks to Math Olympiad training camps... *shudders*). Anyone looking for stories with romance as the main genre, or stories with deeper substance. <<less

I think we've all read our fair share of age difference stories. Sometimes it's handwaved away because the soul in the body is older than the body. Ideally, you know, the older person doesn't fall in love with them until later.

Why did the ML in this one instantly fall in love with the MC? She's physically 16, he doesn't know anything about her except that she saved him. The idea of being awkward and buying sticker packs to match her energy, or getting a plush toy that she wants isn't... more>> inherently gross, but he doesn't know her at all and starts doing things immediately. If he was like oh, you saved me, I'm very thankful and also I'm able to act as a mentor to your studies, etc, it would change the context somewhat. But that's not the case. That's not what happens.

To the point that I'm at, there's no mention of anyone being uncomfortable that she's a minor.

Y'all. It's grooming. It's uncomfortable and it's grooming. <<less

chapter 171 in translation is 49 chapters in mtl. Mtl is readable.

MC is likable. She's hardworking. I love her. It's not romance, but romance is a big part.

I was bothered by the love interest. It's like he's grooming her. There is huge gap in power dynamic. It feels uncomfortable. She's 16, but 19 in reality. But she does not function in the story as 19 y/o. Really, this is a problem for almost all of cnovels I've read. I usually bump up the ages in my head to feel less... more>> uncomfortable. However, in this story, she's literally in high school while the love interest is like 24. That's like the age of my younger sister and the age my professor. 😬 Edit: They are 26 and 17. I can swallow 9 years age gap if they are both adults, but 17? <<less

Bittersweet. I feel like stories become sweeter when in contrast with something bitter. The actual faceslapping and hostile villian actually amounted to little chapters only. Most of the chapters follow the MC life to glory. The ML although very OP, didnt take away anything from the MC’s greatness. I won’t talk much about character development of MC. But I feel like the author was really personifying the word ‘ordinary’ greatly in this story. As she said, she wasn’t a genuis but only stubborn and studious. She was never tempted to... more>> stray not because her character is very firm but because everyone around her was accommodating her and protected her. She was ordinary, but everyone else around her was extraordinary. Her step-father loved her as though he was her own. Her mother, traditional as she was, took great pains to stiffle her nature constantly introspecting in favor of the MC. Her step-brother was extraordinarily mature for his age, not once envious of MC’s achievements or love received from step dad. Her ML, who struggles with his ‘yandere’ personality pranoid in the extremist sense, devoid of familial love and in the throes of business chaos and mayhem, manage to stay rational and sane enough to always consider things in MC’s perspective. Having all those with her while growing up and pursuing her dreams, how can she not turn from ordinary to great? Well, author might as well title his work as ‘my ordinary self with my extraordinary family’.

hatss off. Great work. Good read. <<less

So initially, I liked this novel. However, this is just grooming and bordering on inappropriate. Everytime I read the ML's thoughts on her, I get goosebumps and I get so creeped out. -_-

She's young. She was reborn but she was prolly only 17-18 in her old life. Normally, I don't mind if there's a large age gap between the MC and the ML. But she's a kid in the modern era, you're not supposed to write about something like this. I mean, if you're gonna make something like this, at... more>> least make the MC mentally older or make the ML just a bit younger.

This type of age gap is only acceptable in ancient times (and most of the time, the MC has lived a longer life than the ML anyway). <<less

Like one of the commenters said, it's not a slow-burn romance but rather grooming. The ML knows the FL is underage but still pines after her, stalks her and uses his intellect and trickery to make things go his way.

He can easily manipulate her. He's also very obssessive about her, it's only thoughts but it's still very disturbing when he thinks about how he wants to take her away, hide her, keep her at his home. He even creepily stalks her and premeditates their 'coincidental' meetings.

Even without the problem of... more>> him chasing after a minor, his role has little to do with the story going on. His scenes just seem like random filler episodes because of how isolated his character is from the whole story.

Overall this novel really did not need him as an ML. I feel like chinese novels are too obsessed with the trope of the richest, most powerful, everyone-bows-under-him, dominant male god.

I really would have rather preferred for the FL to slowly develop a romance with her deskmate, Yi Tianyi. Their interactions were really cute and it would have been such a sweet relationship with no powerplay or creepy obsessiveness.

So I didn't like the romance aspect of this novel but otherwise it was pretty enjoyable with the FL only focusing on studying but the villains coming and getting their faces slapped on their own. <<less

This is going to be one of the novels that I will have a deep impression on. It is realistic and touching, and it is filled with many life skills that I feel everyone should remember or take note of. This review may be biased and/or it may contain a number of spoilers.

My first impression of this novel is that it was going to be a school life novel where the female lead works very hard. Honestly, I was very hesitant in reading this even though I still gave it... more>> a try because I saw the novels about 'grooming'. However, I still did because of the following reasons. Well, firstly, I have read tons of not to my taste or horrible novel. Secondly, this novel is well-known by many people and even amongst Chinese readers. And I have to say I did not regret reading this. This is way too good.

This novel is where a female lead that has rebirth and in her past life she was an orphan and before her death she had yet to receive her Gao Kao (College/University Entrance Exam), so she probably passed away (in her past life) at about 18 years old. She was motivated and when she just integrated into this present life, her goal was to tackle University Entrance Exam. In between, there were many hiccups and things she had experience.

An example would be the relationship with her mother
Spoiler

When the FL was just rebirth/transmigrated, she craved for love because she was an orphan in her past life. In her present life, even though her original family was broken, she still lived with a mother and to her that was someone she wanted love from. However, at that time, her mother was caught up with trying to have a firm foothold in her new husband's house. (FL's stepfather) She kept thinking that her daughter was always causing trouble, but she didn't thought that her daughter did this for the sake of her attention. Her mother had always thought that her daughter is wrong but has never really ask her and talk to her. When the FL just transmigrated/rebirth, she told her mother 'I will be your light/glory' and indeed, she worked towards that.

After that, there was a particular incident where the FL's cousin (FL's stepfather's niece) argued with her. This was where the cousin scolded that FL and her mother was a vixen that is seducing man. It occurred in their class where everyone was present. The FL was angry and demand an apology. The cousin obviously did not and the FL hit her knee. At that time, the teacher stepped in and brought them to the office. The teacher called their parents and the FL's aunt and mother came. The aunt immediately demanded that the FL should be expelled and demanded an apology. But the FL stubbornly disagreed because she did not do anything wrong. When the FL's mother stepped in, she immediately slapped the FL and asked her to apologise to her. The FL did not and she said that what she did wrong was to protect the wrong person. Then, the FL requested for witness to be present to speak of the incident. The FL's table mate (Yi Tian Yu) and his friend spoke and explain that the FL did not hit her and told the exact words the cousin said. The FL's mother then noticed that she said something wrong.

From that incident, the FL was very disappointed with her mother and at loss with what she should do. She told how she felt to the ML and the ML told her that it was because she was concerned about them that's why she is hurt. He also told the FL that she should live for herself and not for others and that was why she felt lost. The FL felt better and started to distance away from her mother since she was hurt.

The FL's mother tried to apologise but the FL said that she once said that she wanted to be her glory but now she don't anymore. The FL's mother was devastated and told her husband about it. The husband did told her that what she did was wrong and she shouldn't push the FL to forgive her since she was already hurt.

With regards to that, after that several things occurred and the FL started to learn to be a better mother. She slowly realised that she didn't really cared about her daughter in the past. This was especially so when it was revealed that the FL was tricked and was almost r*ped because of a plot by the FL's step sister (the original FL in the novel she transmigrated).

[collapse]

Even though this spoiler was a small snippet of the novel, it left a deep impression of me.

As for the romance in this novel, it is gradual. My refutation on 'grooming':
Spoiler

Honestly, you may say that it is grooming whatsoever. I feel that even if that is so, then the FL deserves the ML. She is lonely and he is lonely as well. Both of them needs each other. Without the ML, the FL would have fallen apart very quickly with how her mother treated her or her cousin in the beginning. The ML guides her step by step. Though the advices may be harsh, it really works and it made the FL more motivated to live her own life and be successful. Hmm if you ask me whether as someone 9 year older falling in love with someone underage creepy? Maybe so but I feel that the ML did not take advantage of her when she was underage nor confessed to her. I don't think it is much of a problem. The ML probably didn't want to himself, and as compared to other novels, this ML is good enough.

[collapse]

The FL loves him slowly because of his support in whatever she does. She knew herself that she wants to achieve certain things and she doesn't want to give up her dream for love. On the other hand, the ML knows that he loves her and can only be with her. He is willing to wait for her. As he had mentioned, he is a scheming person but I think towards the FL he had only 'plot' against her twice.
Spoiler

It was ofc the part where everyone knows to wait for the right time to confess and be together with the FL, even as to endure his desire to confess and not be a 'friend' or 'kind and respected teacher'.

Secondly, it would be to pretend to be hurt that the FL was going to abandon him in China to leave for MIT for 2 years. For this, it was mainly because the FL took the TOEFL but she didnt know how to tell him and had only told the ML when she received the confirmation 2 months later. When the FL told him that she got accepted and was leaving for two years, the ML did not give much of a response and told her that she can go ahead and there would always be people of the same age as her working together while he can't. This is because the 9 year age gap was a thing that both of them was bothered about. After which, the FL insisted that she won't change and to stay with him on that night. On that night, she thought something would happen but it did not. The ML went to 'sleep' and he was uneasy in his 'sleep'. The FL kissed on his forehead and asked, "I love you, if there is something holding us together would you still be worried?" After that, she fell asleep and the ML woke up. He brought her into his arms and said that "I love you very much as well." Later, the FL planned to propose to the ML at his company during the day of her graduation. The whole company helped to prepare for that since everyone knew that their boss prefers that the whole world know of this news. On that day, everyone had thought that the ML did not know but they did not notice how the ML was dressed and his hair was even styled. The FL sang a song and propose to the ML. The ML told her, "Silly girl, this is supposed to be done by a man." Then, she kneeled and took out a ring. When the FL stepped out of the company, she wondered why the ML had a ring prepared.

[collapse]

Some may find it a pity for the second male lead (Yi Tian Yu).
Spoiler

Honestly, when I read the 2nd male lead parts in the novel, I knew that the FL wouldn't choose him. When they were in high school, he had a crush on her and he slowly liked her even more. While on the other hand, the FL had puppy love for him. The 2nd male lead's actions when they were in high school was immature and he didn't know how to express himself. It was something that the FL knew that they were incompatible. (After they finished the University Entrance Exam) This made me recalled a quote from another novel which says something like: 'Sometimes it is not the person that is incompatible but because they met at the wrong time.' I feel that this quote is very true. If the 2nd male lead met the FL when he was older, the FL may end up together with him. (Ofc if it is without the ML)

[collapse]

In this novel, there are really too many notable points that I want to add. It is really too good and it would probably be the second novel that I like the most. (Where my most favourite novel is Dear Love) I will recommend this novel to readers that would like to read a novel that is very realistic. I would not recommend this novel if you are looking for face-slapping and Mary Sue female lead.

I also hope that to anyone reading this to remember to recall of your goal and work towards it. One should live for themselves and live to the fullest. <<less

Nothing wrong with being a studious girl trying to get into her dream university. Except that I don't want to read about it as it is very seriously boring. It's not even an entertaining slice of life novel. Her life is just very monotonous and her character is plain. I need some face slapping, some dog blood drama.

At best 2/5 or 3/5.

Characters are 1 dimensional.

Story doesn't make sense. I mean its edgy but there is no saving grace.

The FL was typical pathetic Girl who hated everyone & in turn hated by everyone. After transmigration she wants & expect everyone to treat her better. She was so bad that her mother's first response to any accusation was to ask for forgiveness so that she won't be expelled or punished. So she again did what she has been doing for years in school & which led to ML giving advice that her mother didn't care about her. This is when she prefers her Step Mom over her. Man its too edgy for me.

I don’t really read slow burn romances, but this novel is worth it. I loved the character developments and how the MC doesn’t allow anyone or anything to stop her from pursing her dreams. The ML was supportive the whole way too and never pressured her to be with him. Some parts dragged on a bit and some people were just super dumb, but it doesn’t take away from how sweet and nice the romance was.
Spoiler

The ending made me cry so hard, especially with how they loved and took care of each other until old age, more so when the ML got dementia. Then after he died, he still wanted her to live on without him.???

There were some points initially that I disliked about this novel, but I decided to continue and ended up reading the whole thing with much joy.

This novel not only explores the building of relationships, it focuses on the importance of living for the moment, self-autonomy even within family, and fulfilling one's dreams.

I truly enjoyed reading about both the FL and ML's journey.

I have to admit that the extra epilogue made me cry a bit.

Some may find it repetitive or slow but I enjoyed it a lot.

This is a beautiful piece of writing. I love it so much, I bawled like a baby at the end. Unlike any other novels I've read, the way this book was written, the progress, the character growth, it just made it seem like I went through her life with her. And though, only more prominent towards the end, the love in this is beautiful. It's so sweet that I want more.

This is one of the best Chinese novels I think I have ever read in my entire life.

I think that the initial relationship between daughter and mother had hit to close to home for me.

Ahhh! The part where the mother wanted to apologize and promised to change. The MC's answer hit me hard like a meteor wiping out the planet.

"But I don't believe you, just like how you don't believe me."

All the arcs were masterfully written and, I think it's the first time that I had come across such a realistic transmigration novel. There's a logic in everything and nothing is meaningless.

I absolutely adore the MC's stepfather. He's not the best father in the novel-standards (i.e. Overly pampering and s*ave to the fluff and etc.), but he can easily get the best-realistic-father-to-have-irl prize. He knows when to push and when to coax. He respects his children's boundaries and calmly explains the problem in an objective manner so they can understand by themself. UGH! I WISH I HAD A FATHER LIKE THAT!!!!

This novel should add a psychological tag in my opinion.

They talked about the future after school, what do you want to do? Are you ready for what's to come? Those were the questions asked by the old mentor who tutored them during cram school. The old man talked about the fate of his past pupils that he had taught when he was still in a rural village. One of them gave up, another one chose to erase his past in shame, as for the last one, she was full of will but died in an accident when she was little. The old mentor showed them the starry night sky as he asked them about their dreams and future plans. Maybe I'm biased towards this novel because I, myself, am stuck in this stage of life.

Spoiler

It even talked about stress and su*cide! The pressure of the parents that MC's classmate was facing was literally killing her. And about a past enemy became ensnared by her own jealousy that everyone apart from her mother had thought she went insane. But do not worry, the MC helped them, even the jealous cousin.

The MC helped people not because she was a saint, the reasons was the experience of her past life.

Spoiler

The part when she had rejected Yi Tianyu kinda left a sour taste in my mouth tbh. However, I can understand because she knew that they weren't compatible. The boy had chosen a school near her but the best choice for him was a university in another city. MC didn't wish for him to ruin his future because of this affection. Even though she had been his white moonlight for the entire high school years. Yi Tianyu's first love had been a bittersweet one.

But now let's talk about the elephant in the room. The ML. Oh boy, the ML! How much I love this character!

He's like the improved version of the stepfather in ML format. Don't know about the best ML award, but the best mentor award is his' for sure! He's caring but not overly protective because he knows that his girl is a tough cookie. He wants to see her brilliance and helps her throughout her journey. A good analogy is comparing the ML as the MC's polar star. <<less

If this is grooming, I wish it happened to me. If the ML was her body's age they wouldn't click since boys emotionally mature years behind girls. Let's be honest, her deskmate would have advised her to act out, go out, go wild, drink, smoke, color her hair, etc.

The only reason people are complaining is because of the ML's age. There are a ton of novels with same-age MC/ML, please leave us romance girlies that don't mind an age gap alone! Especially when the MC is older than her current... more>> body. Go be unhappy elsewhere. <<less
