【if you stare into the abyss, the abyss stares back at you】

The abyss, the most feared thing by the human race today. The animals infected by the abyss mutate into monsters, and humans are reduced to walking corpses.

Lu Tinghan is an abyss watcher. He has been guarding the world’s most terrifying abyss for ten years.

This abyss is not only scary, but also strange.

Throw the garbage down, after a few days, the garbage will be buried safely next to the abyss – like someone took a shovel and tossed it all night to bury them.

Throw hazardous waste down, after a few days, the waste will be thrown back with unbridled fury.

Lu Tinghan: ?

Ten years later, he left the post and became the youngest general in the Alliance.

The next day, the abyss was also gone.

——The whole thing disappeared and turned into flat land.

The whole world was shocked.

Until one day, there was a knock on Lu Tinghan’s door.

A boy with little devil horns stood outside the door, with delicate features and bright eyes. Obviously, he was scared to death, but he still plucked up the courage to say: “Hello, I, I am Abyss, can you continue to stare at me? QAQ”

He added: “I have helped you bury the garbage every day, oh!”

During their long time together, Lu Tinghan learned two things:

1. Staring at your abyss every day, the abyss will be happy

2. When the abyss is happy, it will purr toward you

I haven't finished reading this yet, but it is absolutely beautiful and I have to leave a review. Although I wish the translation was a little better than cleaned up MTL, the fact that this story is still so poignant speaks for itself.

Even the horrific mutations of people and creatures have a terrible beauty, and the humanity of the characters, including the non-human MC, tug at the heart. In this story, the most inhuman character seems to be the most human of all.

I cried so much! The story has a somewhat predictable plot but that just shows how good of a understanding of the genre the author has. Following the journey of Shi Yuan discovering humanity, he goes to find his human and meets so many people along the way. Lu Tinghan is a general and used to be an abyss watcher. At the beginning he seems like a typical ice cold ML but slowly he reveals his familial history and hidden feelings. Definitely worth reading, please make sure to read the... more>> tags because it's not a comedy all the way through <<less

It's really an ok novel. Well written but somewhere near the end it dosen't give me that satisfaction of ending a novel. I felt some things or answers were missing. May be its that the story revolves around the universe and even author themselves don't know how to put the answers to that. But even so, this is not the 1st novel that I read that revolves around the universe or end of the world. So I just felt there was a lack of proper tying up.

Apart from that, I... more>> don't have much complaint about the novel. It's really light-hearted novel, MC and ML both are characters that you will like. <<less

Overall: 3.5⭐

Personally, I enjoyed the first half of the story. It started out interesting with the apocalyptic settings and the learning how the human survive and fares with their situation. And watching what our innocent child-like OP MC will do when he finally mingled with the human.

It was interesting until it wasn't anymore because... once the MC found his human ML, he... basically just live normal human life with no character development. He doesn't really get involved with any of the events be it human or monsters. He's just a... more>> bystander. He barely explore or try to learn the situation. He just living a normal human life, eating sleeping working and waiting for his human to come home from work. Rinse and repeat.

So with how the MC is written, we also don't learn much about anything outside his perspective and the people he met, which is small. So many things are glossed over with the main plot. Sure there are goals, but because our MC is just living the life, the story drag on and on.

There are so many things I want to know details about, but the author just mention it to move plot along without really getting into details so it's a bit of a let down.

The ending is also rushed. I feel that the author didn't know how to solve, connect, or write this mystery with the abyss, monsters, and the stars situation so she rushed through the ending with timeskips, just so that the story can get back to MC living his romantic human life.

I also have questions with things regarding to ML in the extra too, but I won't get my answer already cause the author, again, glossed over the how and what, just to get to the romance.

I also have a few pet peeve about the MC, tho more so how he was written. For example, MC is supposedly the abyss, one of the source of monsters, and about a few hundred years ago, plus he's the most OP abyss out of all the abyss, yet it seems like he don't know his own power or himself. Heck, ML, a human, is able to understand monsters and senses them better than MC. I suppose the author want that dumb and innocent MC and he's really written as dumb and innocent MC from start to finished.

TLDR: if you like apocalyptic setting but care not for the situations outside slice of life and romance, this one is for you.

If you however like the mystery and want to learn how the human in this world solve it, sorry but you'll be disappointed.

If you read this thinking it's like little mushroom, in a sense it have similarities in non human MC and militia ML, but unlike LM, the plot is an afterthought to the romance. <<less

The whole story feels like a desolate beauty. It has good settings, interesting characters, and grande world.

A lot of thing happens, but it also feel like nothing happen at all, and that's because the MC barely do anything when he's so OP in fact. He's more like a witness of human stories.

For me, it could've been better. Such a potential but not fully developed.

I was actually shocked by how much I loved this novel.

I was a little skeptical at first because it reminded me of Little Mushroom but with a more childlike MC. There were also the issues that happened throughout the novel with the MC, like him supposedly being one of the scariest creatures/beings? In the universe but never really showed it but his interactions with the secondary characters and the ML changed my opinion on this matter.

Let's get into the pros and cons of why I liked this novel.

Cons:

    • MC doesn't really do much. He is supposedly this super OP creature, but he doesn't interact with the events too much.
    • The story dragged at times.
    • Spoiler

The MC spent a lot of the story just hiding with the humans when the ML was out being a general and protecting the humans. The times he had to hide underground or even the everyday things of him working to earn money dragged the story a lot and could've probably reduced the story by at least 20 chapters if those descriptions were taken out.

      [collapse]
    • MC only showed his OP-ness towards the very end of the novel.
    • Ended felt a little rushed but honestly it wasn't that bad.
Pros:

    • The MC remained a sweet and innocent throughout the story. I believe that was a major factor to his character. Yes there were times that he was saddened by the events around him but he still remained sweet and kind throughout the story.
    • The interactions between the ML and the MC were the cutest.
    • When the ML found out about the MC's secret: that part made me super happy because instead of jumping the gun like a lot of other MLs in different novels do, he used his head to think every scenario through and had an ACTUAL CONVERSATION WITH THE MC
    • Despite the MC's supposed OP nature that never showed, the ML always treated him with respect and was treated him as an equal
    • The ML always treated the MC how he wanted to be treated. Like a person that deserved love and respect and lots of pets.
    • Side characters each had their own personalities and were very fleshed out. Sounds crazy but the side characters were ACTUALLY THEIR OWN PERSON, which was frankly wonderful. A lot of novels only have side characters in as cannon fodder or just to help drive the MC but a lot of them had major key factors that helped the story.
    • actually made me cry. Sounds weird but I cried a lot in this novel and that was mainly because I was so attached to many of the side characters in the story, even the ones that we didn't really interact with much, I still felt sympathy for them as people instead of just a side character of a story.
    • The descriptions in this story were beautiful. A lot of stories tend to half-a** descriptions but this one did it justices and I love the work and effort the translators put into translating the details instead of minimalizing it for the sake of time because those details really helped make the story.
    • Settings were awesome.
    • The story did drag at times but I felt that the years spent in this "War" was very well done. It showed that these people were in actual survival mode and every lose and every win showed the beauty of them being alive and trying their best to survive in a world trying it's best to run them to extinction. It really but into words that everything can't be solved with a golden-finger protagonist and a few months fighting the "big-bad"
    • I loved how the author made a legitimately good reason for the MC just being off to the side instead of being the new "savior" of humanity
        • Spoiler

He was only there for the ML. That was his entire goal and why he became human in the first place. He was there as a spectator to the humans and honestly, the reason he ended up saving the humans wasn't really even for them. It was for the monsters. For the infected and the ones that lost their lives and became something other and didn't have a voice. He didn't do it for humanity. Not to save the ML or become the new God of the remaining humans but because that was his purpose. Every review I read on here were people being angry at him not doing more despite the bad affects his powers had on things. He wasn't supposed to be their savior. He wasn't there for them, and a lot of people hate on him because he didn't turn into some super badass MC.

          [collapse]
    • a lot of people, even me, forget that this MC isn't human. He doesn't understand a lot of their ways and while he has empathy for humans, he never forgets that all in all, he is a monster.
    • OMG some parts of this novel were down right majestic.
      Spoiler

The one part when they were evacuating another city and the giant deer and jelly fish (turned out it was the dad and the citizens that died and transformed) had come from the city they never left and happened to "magically be there at the right time to save them from the killer butterflies"
was the such a wonderfully written scene that I will keep going back to because it was so heart wrenching

      [collapse]
Honestly, with what happened in the last couple of chapters after the world was saved, if the author didn't end it the way that they did I was going to riot cause I was crying my eyes out. OMG.

Over all, though I did want to skip some dragging chapters, I was so glad I read this novel. It was beautiful, heart wrenching, and frankly I will definitely read it again. My only sad point is that this will probably never be in paper form so I could buy it and support the author more.

Poignant.

Beautiful story, definitely a masterpiece.

If you liked [Little Mushroom], which is another masterpiece, have a little patience and you'll love this one too.

Although both are super similar in their premise (non-human!MC falls for / cohabitates with human!ML fighting the good fight in a post-apocalyptic world filled with genetic aberrations and monsters), this story definitely shines with its own unique plot and philosophy.

Spoiler

Little Mushroom is a lot more explosive and the pacing is much faster. Ultimately it's a more classically crafted story, like a feature film with the right amount of dramatization about heroes.

This story is actually not. It's really about exploring the mundanities of humanity. It brings magic to things that are common in daily life. It asks the question, what are the soldiers protecting? The mundane, common folk.

In fact, it's a huge theme throughout the whole novel.

The non-human creatures are truly magical, they never have the same number of limbs or eyes, they glow in the dark, they fly, they're inexplicable, strange, unpredictable, alluring, deadly and mysterious.

Yet, our MC was first fascinated by humans. What makes humanity worth it? What is so precious in humanity that attracted him?

And so here is his journey in discovering that.

[collapse]

I absolutely adore the MC and ML - they have a super unusually wholesome relationship that is filled with

Spoiler

trust, hope, faith, belief,

but also

humor, teasing, down-to-earth, domestic happiness.

[collapse]

There's a great balance between super fluffy, happy, slice-of-life moments, and more serious philosophical questions related to ethics, human nature, and the aftermath of war.

Overall, the main relationship is one of my favorites to date. The author did an incredible job portraying all the characters (main characters and the huge supporting cast) super vividly and fleshed out. There are so many tragic but also hopeful stories that the MC (and the reader) touch throughout.

Also I do want to emphasize that the author has very poetic writing. Some of it might have felt too simple as a result of the translation, but I still recommend actually taking your time to read descriptions; the original poetry shines through. Translation was fine overall.

If you liked this concept, I also recommend [Stray] or [Saving Unpermitted], which are both fantastic spins on a somewhat similar premise. <<less

I've never been patient enough for slice of life but this story had just enough balance between slice of life, action, angst and comedy.

The setting was complete with nicely tied explanations as the story goes on, and while there are plenty of technical jargon, it wasn't so much that I end up completely lost.

This story also showed exactly what kind of gov you can have with the right ppl in high ranking positions. While some may argue that it seemed a little illogical that there are no huge corruptions or... more>> unreasonable officials in the political side of things (in that long ass story, only 3 ppl could be counted as bad high tanking ppl, Su Enqi's adopted son, the Imperial's former king and Imperial's princess, one of which has repented and changed for the better) but that actually highlights how humans work. During hard times like war, especially in such desperate times, humans can ban together in the face of a mutual enemy but during peace times, with no common enemy to fight some humans will slowly turn against each for self-interest. So I guess it kinda make sense that there ain't many brainless, corrupt ppl, there's simply no space for that in the face of possible extinction.

Many complained about how illogical it was for ML to be so quick to allow MC close to him, and while it was explained later by ML, I guess the author could have flesh it out more by writing more of ML's POV at the beginning.

Spoiler warning!

ML let MC stay close for three reasons, 1) To keep an eye on MC coz he feels dangerous, 2) coz MC is wearing ML's old instructor's (?) necklace, 3) MC feels familiar to ML which leaves him flabbergasted coz he has no memory of meeting MC (and here's the catch, the author made us think that it's just bcoz ML has been watching over Abyss 0 but the truth is while that plays a factor, ML has actually met MC in his human form back when he was a child and made a promise to MC which the ML subconsciously remembered and fulfilled, that's why he stubbornly chose to be Abyss 0's watcher in the first place, while amnesia troupe is cliché, I think it was executed well enough in this story)

And the slow burn romance actually make sense, with a lonely, guarded and jaded general ML x a silly and kind, still learning to be human MC. Ppl complained about how long it took MC to come clean about his origin but I personally think it's perfectly logical, I mean guys, MC is an abyss, ofc it wouldn't be easy for him to tell ML his real identity, I would be super hesitant too if my secret was big enough that it might cause the first person in thousand of years to keep me company and make me happy to come to hate me, even kill me. I think the reason ppl complain so much is probably bcoz the summary misled them into thinking that MC was honest from the beginning...

The ML and MC has a very healthy relationship and their communication is examplary. The ML does his best to accomodate MC and respect his boundaries, he never took advantage of MC's innocence and always tried his best to teach MC about common sense and not-so-common sense (no Lu Tinghan, the depth of a lake is not a required knowledge when studying maps, at least for non-combatantsXD).

The ML and MC's relationship is warm, full of tolerance and funny moments, the moment I understand the hidden context behind the synopsis, I was grinning widely from ear to ear and ended up laughing my ass off due to ML's reactionXD

The side characters' stories were also sweet and realistic. Some ppl are willing to go on impossible journeys for their passion (like the mutant who loves the universe), and some commit a betrayal that they came to regret (like Edward), some chose contentment and companionship to settle in a relationship (like Qin Luoluo), and some found peace after stewing in guilt in unexpected ways (like Lin Yeran). All of their stories are meaningful and sweet although as brief as a shooting star amidst MC's journey. Though I wonder if the author forgot Alice at the end🥲

Overall, it's a story with decent plot, hopeful with intermittent angst and despair along with funny and fluffy moments👍 <<less

It shares such an uncanny similarities to The Little Mushroom... To be honest in terms of romance, it pales. At least for me, it leaves question marks, the start wasn't even coherent.

Granted, this was more light-hearted. TLM exhaust your emotion only to make you cries with relief by the end. So this novel became something of not as dramatic, however nor as gratifying either. It's somewhat of a pit fall.

Though, I didn't manage to finish reading because I just can't get rid of the feeling of reading something by the... more>> template of TLM. However it is a nice read if you need something more light-hearted than TLM. And the translation is superb. Couldn't ask for more. <<less

This novel is very good. The world building is very coherent, the author tied everything together very well at the end.

I really liked that the MC is not very involved in the war because that way it gives more contrast to human efforts against the superior force of the abyss. The secondary characters seemed very real to me and with a good background.

I agree w the others that the summary is misleading. In the summary, the tone of the story is light hearted and kinda brain less but u got much more than just that. The story starts w a death of MC's acquaintance?? Then MC meets new people n learn more about the human world while getting to know more about ML.

Pro:

MC is the ruthless logical but also cutesy type. Truly an alien but not the type looking for blood bath. One of my fav moment is when MC decided that... more>> MC wants to help the human by killing other monster. But author said reality check👍 and MC ended up making an even worse monster for humankind.

The side charas. I just love em. They are fleshed out quite nicely. My fav side chara gotta be the crazy deserter edward and poor bby su liang

Cons:

It's not clear y ML fell for MC. They just hit it off. But here's the catch, ML is a general w amazing monster radar so MC is sus for ML. But ML just lets MC be near him?? Loke bro brain cell just disappear.

Guess how long it took for MC to reveal himself?? 71 chaps. Some parts are too slow like in the acting part (skipped that) then the deep dive part (decided to abandon this book)

It's not bad but just kinda dragged out too long. Skme oarts are nice while some are just filler chaps. Will prob pick this up again in the future cus I wanna know about the ending <<less

The summary is a bit misleading, since it makes the story seem like a light read.

The setting of the story is a post apocalyptic world, where humans aren't the top of the food chain anymore and try to survive. To story is told without beautifying the setting, but also not seeming hopeless. It's a good mixture between desperation but also happiness of the characters. The story doesn't feel depressing.

Ok, I won’t rate it cause I haven’t finished it but, , , this is quite weird cause Abyss no.0, shi yuan, is practically powerless. I tried reading it until ch 77, bit it can literally be titled the adventure of abyss no. 0 with how much slice of life this has. I expected it to be quite action packed and mysterious, and altho it was a bit mysterious but it was on the characters’ side, not the readers. I don’t really get enough emotions while reading this. There is... more>> too many flashbacks/stories for side characters, unfortunately im not a fan of that. The summary happened right before I stopped it. Could be a hit or miss. Take Little Mushroom fanfic but unnecessarily long. I can't help but feel that the author would forget some characters sometimes and then bring them back to fit the narrative.

The chapters being cut into two doesn't help (couldn't help but feel like I'm endlessly reading)

Anyway, this's a good story, an amazing LT fanfic. But unnecessarily long and kinda boring (due to length)

4.25 but rounded off it in 4.

it's an excellent apocalypse story from a nonhuman creature's perspective. There are lots of stories from different kinds of people with different types of experiences.

i hated but also loved a lot of scenes.

but what I loved the most about this is how the author managed to create and add some funny scenes; even the mc's seriousness sometimes brings joy to the story. Although I was a little confused about its worldbuilding and had left me with a lot of questions about how the apocalypse... more>> exactly started; even the characters doesn't know how the abysses came into life and where they come from. The author just left it as it is. Probably to prove that there will always be things that human beings will never come to know. But for an apocalypse, it doesn't have that much action so for some that would like to read this: the story is more concerned about human emotions and experiences. I might also just add that this has SOME similarities to "little mushroom", another story about a nonhuman creature's journey to learn about humankind. <<less

Okay read. I'd like to give it a higher rating since I liked the characters but I felt like I was following the wrong character throughout the novel. The MC's, Shi Yuan aka Abyss 0, story line was slow and mundane, I wanted to steer the point of view to the ML's, Lu Tinghan. While MC is working a drudge job, ML is at the frontlines fighting monsters... hello author, let me in on the action too please. 👀

The intro isn't entirely correct but MC did go searching for ML.... more>> There were lots of cute moments in the novel. My favorite character would be MC's tail. That thing must have a mind of its own, super cute. ☺️

If you're okay with a slice of lifey feeling story, this one might be the one for you. If you're looking for lots of stimulating action scenes, you're likely to be disappointed.

Spoiler

MC is an abyss who had never infected anything before. The monsters are scared of him but also attracted to him. MC's infection effect is immortality. The infected would die but would be reborn again... the time interval between death and rebirth was proportional to its strength or size. The big monsters took longer to be reborn than the small ones.

SPOILER...

...

ML felt familiar with MC because he had met MC when he was 8 years old. ML heard MC and went looking for him. MC later helped him get home but ML had a fever after and forgot about their meeting. ML had promised then to come back to MC, so that's why ML insisted on becoming an abyss watcher for Abyss 0 when he was 18.

MC was the "lighthouse" for the monsters. He had the ability to show them the way back home. He and ML went to the bottom of Abyss 1 and MC lit the path. Many of the monsters and abyss left earth and went home. During this time ML died but before he died, he had asked MC to infect him. ML was then reborn many years later and reconnected with MC again.
