Tempered Immortal has been on my read list for a while, but I've always been reluctant to read it. I mean, holy moly! 4k chapters? That's crazy! I'd be lying if I said I wasn't intimidated.

Anyhow, I really like the premise. The idea what MC is able to take what people normally considered tr*sh and recycle it into a treasure, there's a lot of potential in that. It's a fresh idea, and it was MC's primary cheat, but after a while, I kinda lost interest.

For some reason, I thought... more>> that this would be one of those stories, you know, the type where the protagonist stays in the shadows, tricks enemies into fighting each other while he safely makes off with the treasure with none the wiser. That's what I'd assume a smart protagonist would do. Hide in the shadows and reap all the benefits, without fighting battle after battle like an ox. Instead, we have a MC who would often throw himself into dangerous situations, makes a point to ignore threats that would eventually explode into a much larger problem, and constantly make enemies out of people who are at a much higher cultivation level than he is. He doesn't make much plans at all. No schemes, no trickery. Hell! He would even gain the ability to change his appearance and hide his cultivation level, and still he walks around with his real face and introduce himself with his real name. And he couldn't be bothered to hide his identity because since he's only been around for 20+ short years, he thinks that no one would recognize him. And this is the same guy who constantly stress to himself about how dangerous and cutthroat his world and its inhabitants are!

... Hear that? Cause I just broke my nose face-palming.

So I don't think MC is clever, rather he's just properly cautious and paranoid, with maybe a little bit of wit on him. Other than that, he reads like a normal xianxia MC to me. And as a normal xianxia MC, basically all he does is fight, fight, fight.

I've read almost 600 chapters, and there's almost never a moment where he doesn't have to fight someone. And these fights are so drawn-out. Even against people who are of a lower cultivation weaker than him, it'll take at least two chapters to resolve. The first to introduce who his opponents are and talk about their entire life story. The second for the fight to actually happen. But MC is at least nice enough to let them exhaust their move-set first before he kills them. Whatta swell guy! For even slightly stronger opponents, it's not rare for the fights to last anywhere from five to eight chapters. Or even more. Which makes it kinda ironic because despite all the fighting he does, this MC feels a bit underpowered.

Yes, MC's develops at a pace that is considered very fast in comparison to his peers, but that's because of his many cheats. Okay, so what's her excuse then? By her, I mean MC's maid, Yue'er, some random ghost that MC ens*aved while he was in some normal city of normal mortals. Turns out, she's also some genius who could easily follow MC's footsteps. Without cheats, without pills, she is always at least equal or just one small level beneath MC. Huh?? Not joking! MC is Mid Gold Core? She is Early Gold Core. The heck is this situation? MC is being overshadowed by his own maid! This isn't the only example. Later, one of MC's rivals happens upon some miracle elixir that magically promotes him to MC's level. Huh? MC works like a dog and risk his life for years just to promote one teensy level and this mothertrucker finds one treasure and catches up immediately? What? Are we sure that MC is the real protagonist here? All in all, the author puts way too much focus on the side-characters, even B class characters, and not enough on the MC himself.

And his power feels weak too. Despite the sheer amount of treasures and cheats that MC have in his body, the best he could do is fight someone who is of one minor level ahead of him. Yes, I mean minor level, not one level. For example, basically when MC is Early Gold Core, he can maybe fight Mid Gold Core. Anyone with a higher cultivation than that and MC will have to run like a dog and hide. God helps him if he encounters anyone who is actually a solid level ahead of him. No, I'm serious. God, save him before he pissed his own pants!

Sigh! It's not exactly enjoyable to read this kind of MC.

There's much bigger problems though. I know that this is a very old story (est. 2009) so I was prepared to read all sorts of classic xianxia tropes, but wow, Tempered Immortal reminds me so much of Sovereign of the Three Realms, and not in the good way.

It's the exposition! Now, I can normally suffer a little exposition here and there, but every chapter, around 30% of it will be dedicated to expositions. MC would constantly think to himself, explain every one of his decision/action down to the smallest detail, talk about this thoughts, dedicate entire chapters to stuff that's not really important and no one really cares about. Repeat information, all that jazz. The repetition is mindbogglingly bad. This story has so much needless information that it would sometimes drive me crazy. The author would inserted expositions/info dump even at key moments and completely throws off the pacing of the moment. One moment, MC's fighting for his life, next... Stop. Exposition! But it's fine, cause the info dump only seemed long and windy from our perspective. For MC, it was only a blink of an eye. That's the way the author writes, and it annoys me so much! The author really needs an editor to cut down all the excess fat! Basically, like most Chinese web-novelist, the author really uses every trick in the book to bloat up his word count. There's other methods as well that are very obvious.

Spoiler

Example A: MC needs to buy some stuff for alchemy, yes? In this scenario, the author would just need to write a sentence or two that explains the MC went to the city off-screen and got what he need, yes? But not in this story. The author would write MC going to the shop, write out the entire conversation between MC and the shopkeeper, then write about how MC finally returns home and starts the process. The shop isn't important, there's no importance in this trip except to acquire the item MC needs. So basically filler, yes?

Example B: MC travels to a sect known for their scrolls that summons beast. MC talks with some random youngster, who then mentions a very famous scroll maker, is shocked that MC doesn't know who the said scroll maker is, and then tells MC all about this scroll maker and his achievements and how awesome his scrolls are. Later, when MC shops for summon scrolls, he encounters someone who might be the famous scroll maker. MC even thinks to himself about how he suspects the person may be the famous scroll maker. Only, in the end, after MC has brought the scrolls he needed from the person, that MC decides that the person isn't the famous scroll maker after all because the person accepted a low-level item as payment that the famous scroll maker would otherwise never have accepted. MC never does meet the famous scroll maker because he would later travel to a much better location and the person who sold MC the scroll he needs is basically just an unknown nobody. Huh, why the fudge did I just read all that BS then?!

Example C: MC and a group of cultivators are recruited by a merchant guild to kill a monster. At the meeting, MC and another character strikes up a conversation. The character is led to believe that MC is a freelance cultivator and makes every attempt to recruit MC into his 3rd-rated sect, which includes details on all the advantages that he could enjoy if he joins and how important it is to have a strong backing in one's road of cultivation. Then MC rejects him and the person stubbornly ask MC to visit the sect someday and check it out, maybe he would change his mind. Then, the character dies a couple chapter later and everything I just read was basically meaningless. Oh my God, this part is so irrelevant! Note, the author has already went over all this stuff shortly after the 1st map change. At this point, MC is already in one of the best sects around and is next in line to take over as leader. I thought that the character and MC would have at least become friends or whatever, but nope! He's dead, Jim! So what was the point of dedicating almost two chapters to a conversation with an entirely irrelevant character and his useless sect? Foie gras, anyone?

[collapse]

And the dialogue, it seems the point of every character is to stretch out every conversation that can be said. Misunderstandings, over-reactions, small talk. Any question that can be asked, will be asked. And author always try to insert some worthless babble into some sentences, maybe to make the conversations feel natural, but probably to bloat up his word count. In fact, the maid that I mentioned earlier, Yue'er, she is basically the Robin to MC's Batman. She questions and second-guess just about every single decision that MC makes. MC wants to do that, she ask why. And when MC did this, she ask then why he didn't that. She talks and talks and talks! And she's just a maid! A s*ave, to put it bluntly, not even a lover! But holy shit! So much worthless rambles from her! I think she is easily my least favorite character in the story.

I made it to about 600 chapters before I decided to drop this story. The arc that ultimately made me give up is where MC explores a ruin for over thirty chapters, maybe even fifty. I don't know, I think my brain shut down somewhere in the middle of all that. But anyhow, it was nothing but MC fighting mobs after mobs after mobs, and chapters of detailed POV from a couple of generic characters that no one cares about. My God. I heard that this gets even worse in the later chapters so I decided to drop this story here.

So my thoughts are, this is a very generic xianxia story that some people may enjoy, but honestly, it's not worth the effort. There's other options out there, and the only merit this story has over them is its length. In this case, it is indeed not about the size of the boat, but the motion of the ocean.

Two out of five stars.

P.S: I forgot. Everything I've read so far points to this story as being a harem, but up to 600 chapters, the most MC has done so far is kiss one love interest. <<less

The MC may be a bit too perfect (calm and steady in face of danger, high intelligence, etc) but his hardwork and temprament are really to my liking.

Another thing I like about the MC is his level headedness. He kept his real power hidden successfully, and always think ahead. Moreover, unlike other MC, he didn't receive substantial help and guidance from other people, unlike other who conveniently got long lost information or recieve help from long dead OP ancestor.

He did recieve many wealthy foes (which he left dead and conveniently... more>> recieve fortune from) but it's actualy quite humorous for me because
Spoiler

everytime he found clearing, he always got involved in (via unintentional eavesdropping) some untold secret, making people want to kill him and thus ending with him getting fortune from dead foes (that he killed). He already do it 3 times! Hahaha

[collapse]
But I think that it's a given since he's The MC. We need some ways to power up MC right? <<less

Initial impressions.

Be warned, this is a “hardcore cultivation xianxia” novel. Don’t expect the dramatic happenings of I Shall Seal The Heavens. The first 30 chapters could literally be called “Record On How A Cultivator Refine Pills”. Chapters and chapters of cultivation and pill refining descriptions. 30 chapters and the amount of times the MC actually said something is few and far between... and when he does, it's nothing substantial.

Other than the one brief, dangerous encounter where he obtained the treasure, there is very little happening. The reason there is so... more>> little dialogue in the first 30 chapters I’ve read is because they were mainly about the MC’s solitary struggles and efforts at cultivating, understanding the treasure and refining pills. Later on he goes to a fair and to demonstrate just how dry the story is, there were only three short sentences of dialogue about making a trade in the entirety of chapter 39.

The translation is good, the writing is descriptive but dry. There is no overarching plot yet, or a goal that drives the MC except he wants to roid up more and more, for no other reason than that in the setting; strength is respected. The MC is a calm and collected person, going to great lengths to hide his newfound abilities, but we do not get a sense of what he wants to achieve at the end. There are barely a handful of named characters introduced thus far, and even then they are seemingly unimportant at this point of time.

Seeing how the info bar states it’s complete at 4220 chapters, I advise new readers to xianxia to put this on hold to read later once a large number of chapters have stacked up. <<less

I'm so glad the translation improved by so much!!! I dropped this book a long time ago because I wasn't very used to the translation, but after seeing it being picked back up, I decided to come back and check it out. I did not expect the quality to improve so tremendously and the uploading speed is insanely fast as well.

Thank you to the translator for working hard to bring us such an amazing novel.

Read up to chapter 34, and so far 90% of the story is focused on pills in one way or another. It seems like the pills are the main character. It seems like there are no other characters in the story, besides one liner characters. There has been one fight so far, and it lasted like two paragraphs. Lin Xuan, "MC" is trying to get stronger for no other reason than to live longer. He as no enemies, no one is physically bullying him, there is no urgency for him... more>> to get stronger. In other words, no rising action to keep me interested in the story. <<less

A Great slow paced Cultivation novel. Similar to RMJI in that sense and his treasure does not make him op as of yet.

I'd say its a nice slow paced hidden gem.

It started out interesting but quickly spiral down to your typical xianxia novel. MC is cold, calm and methodical, but that is the only good point of the novel. The plot armor is extremely thick.

So far the plot can be summarized to this:

MC go outside -> encounter rare and lucky event with treasure -> doesn't want to get involved because he's "smart" -> plot force him to get involved anyway (i.e. His phone rang and his enemies notice him hiding nearby) -> they try to kill him -> MC uses... more>> "smart" to kill enemies and take all loot and whatever treasure the plot spawn for him -> rinse and repeat.

So far this plotline has repeated 3 times. And this 3rd time the treasure literally flies into his hand just because. I just decided to drop it. And when I say smart it just basically him acting weak and enemies got arrogant because everyone else other than MC have a cumulative IQ of 13, and then he surprises them with a trump card.

If you haven't read a lot xianxia novel I would still recommend trying this out since these cliches probably haven't worn you out yet. Better to read something like this than MGA, save you a couple of brain cells. <<less

TI, so far, is basically your run of the mill cultivation story. There's only really one instance of originality where the MC uses brains instead of brawn. That was pretty much the only highlight of the first 57 chapters.
Nothing much at all happens otherwise.

Like all the other stories of this genre, the MC basically is a selfish ruthless bastard that sort-of understands right from wrong but unless it profits him gives a rat's ass about it. Nothing original there either.

Kudos to the translators, but otherwise, the story isn't really... more>> all that interesting yet. Hopefully that'll change. <<less

MC is intelligent, calm and resourceful. He doesn’t rush into confrontations, but he is ruthless if somebody tries to kill him. For now MC is keeping a very low profile, everybody who fights him ends up dead and nobody knows his true strength. I think so far it’s mostly set up for the story. I’m looking forward to when MC starts interacting with others, competing, traversing the world etc.

Well pretty good as of current chapter, its a bit like xian ni at the start with the MC keeping a low profile

but one downside for me is why is the MC so keen in getting stronger?

This story is what happens if Xianxia MC is intelligent and careful. He keeps his OP treasure well hidden, and cultivates secretly. He does not make any trouble or create any enemies. He does not walk around like he owns the world despite being weak, or care about his 'face'. So nobody bothers him. Only problem is, nothing much happens. It's mostly just MC cultivating while keeping a low profile. He does not really interract with anyone. It's still interesting to read, if not very exiting. There are only two... more>> fights so far, MC used his intelligence very well to fight and hide the evidence afterwards. <<less

I don't like the writing style, there's too many repetition. That added to the low quality of translation doesn't make me want to continue reading.

I really liked this novel. So much that I took it upon myself to read mtl version of it. And well... my impression is not as good as it was before. As novel progresses it loses its unique point. Yeah, you probably guessed it - protagonist later on transfers into traditional xianxia MC while novel still tries to emphasize his hardships its just not the same. As of now having reached 916 chapter, I am dropping it for no other reason than it having lost its unique features.

Evaluation? For early... more>> part of the novel 5 stars, but as it progresses - especially after nascent soul it sharply loses appeal. At this point I give 3 stars. <<less

The idea of turning tr*sh into treasure is very good. I don't know if it's the Translations or Writing but it needs more polishing. It's still to soon to judge this Novel but so far pretty good. It left us in a big cliffhanger there and hasn't been updated over a year.

Since he's very close to Demonic Dao, I'm very curious what path the MC will take? I don't know yet if this is cliche or not but the Heroine is super cliche. She and MC are bland taste.

This is... more>> what turned off readers, as much as I love calm badass MCs, he has no unique personality. Like some reviewers have said "Too perfect"

Should you read this? Yeah good way to kill time but it's still to soon to judge.. <<less
