Probably the best Chinese webnovel though I will argue that Lord of the Mysteries comes very close so depending on your tastes LOTM might surpass it.

There's plenty of people riding this novel's meat in the reviews already so I won't repeat their thoughts, if you're undecided about whether or not to read this novel, don't be, go read it. The beginning is a little awkward but also has a lot of great moments so if you don't like let's say everything until chapter 600, don't force yourself to finish it.

The... more>> main thing about this novel that shines is how no side character or enemy with powers is s*upid. Anyone who could make it to that level of cultivation has talent and at least above average intelligence.

There are no systems, cheats or absurd luck events.

Since all the pros have been mentioned already, I suppose I'll go with the cons.

The numbers Mason, oh god the numbers. This novel baffles me in how simultaneously consistent and inconsistent it is. The main inconsistency is the problem with numbers. The author cannot for the life of him get numbers right. He even makes fun of it himself. Certain things are too big to make sense and other things are too small to make sense. For instance, the amount of immortals in the world is stated to be in the hundreds barely approaching a thousand. Yeah no bullshit. There should be at least 1 thousand immortals per region with 2-3 thousand in Central Continent. Does it sound like I pulled this number out of my behind? Well this is exactly what the author does? He just pulls out random numbers at times to emphasize his point. He clearly wants to state how little immortals there are in this world so boom only 5 rank 8 in the northern plains and under 10 immortals in a small super force like Dong Fang clan.

Granted, this could be the age old conundrum of power inflation throughout the chapters, but truthfully the later chapters are so well done that it really just feels like there was power deflation at the beginning. So towards the end of the novel, with the huge amount of rank 8s appearing, it certainly feels like there are thousands of immortals per region.

My rambling about immortal numbers (don't read unless familiar with the story) :

Spoiler

13 super forces per region. Weakest super forces have a peak rank 7 with a gu house maybe. Average immortals/super force is implied by the author to be 10-20, bullshit. The way the organizations work clearly shows that there are roughly 5 or more rank 7s per force. Conservatively, let's say 30-40 immortals/super force. That's 400 righteous path immortals per region, add to that lone immortals who match the righteous numbers and then demonic path immortals gives something a little north of 1000. Central Continent is just another story altogether with the old geezers in the graveyard, making rank eights pop out every few seconds. There are also the 10 great sects with rank 8s each. Not to mention the Grotto Heavens who all have rank 8s as well. There should at least be 50-100 rank 6/7 for every rank 8 master and I can easily list 30 rank 8s off the top of my head. Rather than saying there are too many rank 8s, I'm saying there were too few mentioned in the beginning of the story (mainly cuz the later chapters are really fun).

[collapse]

Even if I said the main character doesn't purely rely on cheats, it could be argued that he's only really extraordinary due to his rebirth advantages and accumulation from other venerables. Sure he's worked hard for it, but so have all the other characters in the novel. Even then, he's a very good main character and thoroughly enjoyable to read. <<less

You have to have a high IQ to understand how good this work is.

Forget about world-building, cultivation, all of that is irrelevant, or rather, not the main thing.

The most important one is Fang Yuan. The author packed several ideas into this character, the MC is very interesting.

... more>> Gu Zhen Ren used this book to show all the dynamics of control that society imposes on the individual. I would say that he presents the Gu world and the MC as two absolute opposites.

Fang Yuan is a pure representation of the concept of individuality while the Gu world is the representation of society.

In book 1 he explained how the political system worked and how it controlled the nature of the average citizen. He was criticizing governments in general, but especially the Chinese. Various domination mechanisms were shown through Fang Yuan's thoughts. All of this can be abstracted to real life.

In book 2, he begins a more philosophical journey, especially when he talks about the ups and downs of MC's life, which went from s*ave to businessman, from businessman to servant and from genius to tr*sh. These experiences showed in the work that regardless of your potential, as long as you have the will you can achieve what you want. Even if you have shitty talent, what differentiates ordinary individuals from extraordinary ones is will.

In book 3 the clash between the individual and society is now resumed. The author uses several hidden plots to teach readers lessons.

If you read the legends of Ren Zu, you realized that this was not a random bullshit.

The dream realm was also the same. You can gain many insights by reading this book, you will see deep psychological dynamics illustrated in each character.

Read this with a pinch of salt. I have never seen something in any other Chinese novel. <<less

Ch 59 convinced me.....

This is definitely the best piece of writing I've definitely come acrossed philosphical-wise, and it's translated very eloquently as well... I'm glad I didn't skip this novel. Truly marvelous...

I mean there's definitely other novels that I prefer much more in terms of Story and Settings, but this novel is definitely undisputed when it comes to combing philosophy and story... insanely well done...

This is definitely a book I want my kids to read like a bible...

This is the best novel I have ever read. The world building is breathtaking. Most of the things which are going on, are psychologically accurate. The plot just blows up the mind.

This is not a novel. This is an experience

Didn't read much yet, but I want to praise one aspect of this novel.

The protagonist is kind of a sociopath, not enjoying killing, but feeling literally nothing as he kills a peasant family or two. His clansmen share this attitude, but regarding their own clan, they treat them more or less like humans. MC not. This is nothing positive and in some cases I feel uncomfortable with his overboard behaviour.

BUT: he really is not a hypocrite. As he kills others, he expects to be killed in return. He is resolved... more>> and feels no regrets. Even if I disagree with his course of action, the easiness with which he describes his own potential death feels in some ways cathartic.

Edit: I agree with JoakimT, the author has some guro fetish I think. I recommend mostly skipping chapter 151 + beginning of 152 <<less

I was recommended this novel because I like antihero.

Seems the one that recommend this forgot to tell me that the word padding for word counts was trough the roof, the MC isn't antihero but a straight up sociopath villain, and the author treat the readers as some imbecile in needed of his guidance of how awesome the MC and his acts.

Update C481

I'm loving this so far. The world and cultuvation system are quite unique. Fang Yang... what can I say about this character... He is one of the only actual amoral MC's whose only interests lie with taking care of number 1.

I found myself mouth agape, at some of his decisions, because the novel reader in me still expected a modicum of decency and conscience from this MC. Key word being expected Alas, there is none to be found. My respect for him still grows nonetheless. At this point, I... more>> can only feel sorry for the poor unfortunate souls unlucky enough to encounter Fang Yuan and his scheming deviousness.

I feel like it would be a fitting end for FY to die after just reaching his goals, or maybe right on the brink of it. He is an excellent character, yes, but an absolute sh*t of a human being, and that's ok. That's why we love him

Update C1022

Sigh. Wow, well, here we are. Book 5. Sigh. Sigh and sigh again. I love seeing a character that's not OP, who has to strive for everything, but dang author, do you hate your own creation?! I was appreciating the heck out of the last set of chapters, cause we actually saw FY benefiting from his rebirth, by a lot. Then chapter 1022 happens. Sigh

This book is already one that I cannot digest by itself. I have to space it out by consuming other books that are lighter, fluffier and better for my poor heart. But then this blow of C1022 comes and smack me upside the head. I can hope for another uno reverso, but can this happen twice in the same arc? I doubt it. Sigh. Smh. My heart can't take it. On now to do a cleanse with a short rebirth novel where the MC has some sort of golden finger and sleeps some faces. Then I'll get back on this heart wrenching journey <<less

Well, well, well. This book also has two extremes for Chinese readers. Some people think this book is a masterpiece, some people think this book is a rubbish. It seems that this is also true in other countries. Of course, I like this book very much.I don't know if this book is updated to the latest chapter, but I can tell you–––the early and late stages of this book are really wonderful, don't be defeated by boredom in the medium stage. (My English is not very well. If there are... more>> some grammar or wording mistakes, please forgive me.) <<less

I hope author can re-refine the novel and give it a dashing finishing, like refining the world adding new dao from chaos.. Start of a new, better world.. FY is more capable and open minded than small minded heaven and it's offsprings.. So I hope FY can overturn all their trumpcards instead of holding back and dragging on, becoming new dao god.. Also slapping the answer to all those who named him devil with action..

Since this one is banned, why not rewrite/fine-tune FY's story and give it completeness.

Absolutely despicable MC. Sociopathic point-of-view made me feel like I was reading the inner thoughts of a reincarnated robot shark. There is, and clearly will not be, any future emotional connection with other character. Truly a villain in every sense; this guy regularly mu*ders innocent people for spare change and is the type who would take lollipops from babies, then cover up the crime by leaving them to burn in a apartment fire. If you enjoy documentaries on serial killers, you may find this to be an excellent cultivator novel... more>> with very few plot holes (because, at their core, cultivators are mu*derhobos; this story just embraces it). I read a few hundred chapters and despite loving the quality, I couldn't engage with the story. <<less

I've tried to read this a few times now, based on the rave reviews, but I just can't see what everyone loves about this book.

Reverend Insanity is a book about a 500 year old cultivator who returns to 500 years in the past. From the beginning, you know that he is an evil cultivator - which is fine. The trouble is that the book keeps telling you that he is smart and experienced, but his actions do not reflect that at all.

He is utterly useless, and he commits mu*der for... more>> no reason further than 'he felt like it'; 'to intimidate his classmates' and so on. Of all the mu*ders so far, only one made sense, and that was where his plans went a bit awry and he avoided dangerous conflict by killing quickly.

As far as I am concerned, the title of the book is accurate - the MC is clinically insane, not just evil. His actions are not logical in the slightest. <<less

I've read a lot of Wuxia/Xianxia/Xuanhuan novels, and I can say without a doubt that Reverend Insanity is simply the best one out there. It is arguably the ONLY progression fantasy novel actually worth reading. However, that being said, it still shares all the flaws that web novels tend to have. Yes, compared to a regular novel-- it's not great. Information is repeated endlessly due to weekly release format, there is no character growth, relationships are shallow, characters lack depth, there is no meaning other than the pursuit of power,... more>> etc. (A lot of these aren't even cons in the context of the novel. If they're cons for you, why the f*ck are you reading progression fantasy?)

However, compared to other Xianxia/Xuanhuan web novels, it's simply the best. The world, plot, and MC are all consistent enough that you can actually turn off your brain to enjoy the progression. There are actually plotlines besides an endless parade of arrogant caricatures. The MC doesn't get protected by plot armor at every turn despite ret*rded decisions. The world stays consistent and isn't broken at the author's whim. For these reasons alone, if you want to have some "brain feel good when MC get stronger" without feeling completely insulted, RI is the best choice.

Slants Perpendicular's review goes into more depth about the strengths/weaknesses of the novel, and I found it accurate. <<less

Too bad, that this novel got banned in China. Hopefully the author can still release it till finished sometime in the near future. :/ In a sense, Gu is Dao essence. Man can wield (use) Gu (Dao). The way Author explain the Gu system coupled with Ren Zu legend was really awesome.

The thing I really didn't like was whatever moves that Fang Yuan had, his opponent can easily nullify it. It's OK if only the supreme wisdom path like Star Constellation Immortal Venerable could do it or Fairy Zi Wei for... more>> her quasi-supreme attainment in wisdom path, but it didn't make sense that every person from Heavenly Court could do the same thing. Fang Yuan literally had dozens of moves! Even if they knew how to counter, did they have capability to do it? You need corresponding Gu's or moves to execute it and the capacity to do so!

Anyway, despite all this, I still give it 5 stars rating! Btw Author, please kill these annoying characters Fang Zheng, Zhao Lian Yun, Qin Ding Ling etc, lols :D <<less

I got bored of normal cultivation stories and wanted try something different. I gotta say this novel is one of a kind of all the novels I've read so far (50+).

Few pointers to those who are thinking of reading: The MC here is unlike any devil/demonic path cultivators. No romance, no emotions. Totally self-centered. He'd be awesome villain (with no morals) if put into another novel-verse.

Story has it's unique flavour with the use of Gu worms for cultivation. But sometimes it seems ridiculous to have a Gu for almost everything.

I hate people who writes reviews about a thing before they even finish it.

first of all, this is one of the best or if it wasn't the best novel I've ever read. The plot, the characters, the power system, literally everything is perfect and especially when the main character speaks about himself and his view on the world he lives in. If you didn't read this novel yet I highly suggest you to read it and if you're one who loves harem and an overpowered bullsh*t MCs give up on... more>> it this masterpiece is not for you. <<less

great story. unfortunately its badly ridden with BULLSHAT FILLERS. the renzu story/gu story/dead irrelevant people of the past has only a MINUTE relation to the MCs story, do not be deceived and FULLY read it (just skim that shat!) ---you will only be disappointed. skipping those USELESS information will greatly enhance your reading experience more. the story is solid and must read, again aside form the USELESS FILLERS---author please leave this shat to naruto where it belongs OK?

the title is a misnomer... this MC is one of the most devious... more>> characters in the likes of johan liebert or light yagami. I'm still waiting on when he will get the title of reverend insanity but so far...i think this was just a red herring to attract attention. fang yuan is in no way insane... an insane person submits to the present and the moment, to achieve his objective, in the fast, efficient, despicable and most cruel way. he has moments of insanity but not "true" insanity.

overall its a great read so far. the changes, circumstances, npcs, characters of the past are most often remembered and not magically discarded in most webnovels... as the current trends of almost ALL webnovels you may have read. <<less

I retract my review... I dropped two stars because this becomes annoying as time goes on... The MC has little plot armor but has way too many sh*t nerfs... This is basically a novel about how the rest of the world has it easy but when fang Yuan is in the picture he'll have to go through the most hell possible just to achieve half the results others have with no effort... Some arcs are way too boring and long, too much info

I actually haven't read the novel yet but I do the manhua. I decided to write a review because so far, this novel is so good! He is smart, extremely smart and is a true scary manipulative person. What's more good is that he's smart by not making his enemies/other people dumb, literally wise. Also, I like that he's OP but also not. Experience is his greatest treasure, that's why he can pass many obstacles but of course, even if he showed such strength, even you a reader knew that... more>> he's on his limit. He is powerful because of his 500 years of experience, but he was limited due to his lack of talent (well, it's common in other novels that if they're reborn, they will become a genius). Also, I find this novel more reasonable! Imagine, after 500 years, will you still remember the things when you're fifteen? Except when you have a photographic memory that let you remember every detail, your memories will be vague and blur! What happened is, he vaguely remembered and work hard to find those things. Of course, it also took him a few more days! This is real hardwork. He doesn't have a god-divine luck.

And my most favorite part is there's NO HAREM! NO DISGUSTING, CHILDISH WOMAN AND LITTLE GIRLS!

So far, I love this! I will read the novel once I finished the manhua. <<less
