-
- Aria is a solid protagonist, has clear strengths and weaknesses and works around them in fairly realistic and clever ways. She becomes pretty damn powerful by the end of Volume 4, but it feels earned because of how much sh*t she went through.
- Exposition is way too much at times, there's a lot of points where one sentence easily gets across what the author details in several paragraphs. I find myself skipping a lot. Less is more. I am genuinely interested in the story, so have an editor go through your script and cut out all the unnecessary stuff. It really screws with the pacing.
- The author clearly has a vision in mind for how fights work out in motion, which I respect - there's some pretty well-thought choreography in play. However, it's very hard to visualize since Aria fights through using a unique type of weapon that is described in motion but never properly visualized, in addition to the choreography being atypical in its complexity. This novel would benefit a lot from the fight choreography being visualized, but it's not, so expect to stop and try to understand what's happening mid-fight scene A LOT and still struggling to imagine it. This is a major sticking point for me because I know there's some actual effort here to make some good fights but I often have a hard time imagining it.
- There are a lot of child characters in this story that act nothing like children. They're basically just adults inside a child's body, a misstep a lot of authors make because they don't know how to write children.
- None of the characters click with me as much as Aria does. Some are alright, but most are mediocre and I really can't be bothered to care. You're just kind of introduced to a lot of them and are expected to care when none of them have motivations or backstories that are as interesting as Aria's. Whenever the focus switches off of Aria my interest usually just goes out the window, unless it serves to establish more clearly Aria's perception to others.
- Overall a solid read, but carried heavily by Aria being a fairly interesting character whom you want to see succeed. Hopefully future adaptations will do the fights justice and properly contextualize what's happening.
tl;dr Has a strong protagonist with well-thought out fight scenes that are unfortunately difficult to visualize. It's unnecessarily verbose with child characters that don't act like children, and a fairly lackluster overall cast when put next to Aria, but overall it's a solid read in spite of Aria having to carry the entire story on her back.
