It was really fun to read in the beginning however the MC gets reallly OP and pretty much has no opponent and no dilemmas so gets really boring,

4.5/5 in the beginnning 2/5 when he gets too OP.

Regardless of what you may think about the MC morality or lack thereof, the main problem with this novel is that it is tedious. After 100 chapters I got tired of looking for nuggets of plot in between boring verbose descriptions of video game style power-ups.

Once again, one star not for any morality reasons but because it is deadly boring and sleep inducing.

WARNING THIS REVIEW IS VERY LONG

It's been a long time since I started reading this series and I've made a lot of excuses for it simply because I did enjoy reading it. It's hard not to enjoy this story, at first. Every character besides Rou is pretty cool and interesting and they all seem to have morals that Rou definitely lacks, but that's the problem, Rou is the main character. Now, the reason why I'm not giving this series a straight 1/5 is because it is entertaining in certain areas.... more>> The babies are adorable and I love reading them interact and I feel sad for and emotionally attached to the women who are supposedly Rou's fated wives. Why do I feel bad for them? Because he r*ped most of them and they now have Stockholm syndrome, the dude is vile. Now I don't mind reading or watching a story about a terrible MC with very few morals every now and then, take Klaus Mikaelson from The Originals for example. He's not a good person in the slightest, he only cares about his family and if he does something good it's either to manipulate someone or it's out of a whim of his. He's a mu*derous, angry, and emotional person who tortures people to death who've wronged him but there are things that Klaus would never do. R*pe is one of them. I love Klaus as a character because he has depth and variety and as every person with thoughts in their brain should have, he has limits and boundaries. Rou is predictable and disgusting with no boundaries and that's all. There's nothing enjoyable about when Rou kills but when Klaus kills someone I can usually find a sense of peace with it. It makes you cringe every time Rou does something because you know those people are innocent and don't deserve what's being done to them. Rou might be a monster that keeps evolving and so his instincts get stronger and stronger with each evolution and I can tell that might be what the author is going for. The humanity and morals he had in the beginning are vanishing as he evolves into stronger monsters but the thing is, there is never a struggle. We never see him struggle to maintain that morality, it just disappears, which is frankly bad writing.

I was hoping that in the end one of the heroes would kill him and Rou would look back on what he became but as I got farther in I realized that's not going to happen and even if it did, plot holes would form and the message of the entire story would be an even bigger mess then it is now. Right now, the message seems to be that all of the monsters have life and intelligence and so they're not all inherently evil because of their instincts. (Which seems alright at first, but the underlying message behind that is 'So please let them do whatever they want and their enemies aren't allowed to defend themselves.' Humans are only defending themselves from these races once you actually sit there and think about it. The goblins find human women and they r*pe them, torture them, and kill them, same with the orcs, and a lot of other monster species.) If the message suddenly changes to 'Everybody has darkness inside them but we should learn to express ourselves without giving in, like Rou did' then what about the other monsters who I actually do happen to sympathize for that aren't inherently evil and are just following orders under a leader, our MC, who happens to be very insane? What happens to the original plot of the movie? It gets thrown away. The author tried and it was a very good concept idea but they took it too far and now there's no going back and there's also no way to draw a satisfying conclusion anymore. The light novel isn't finished yet and I am nowhere near caught up despite how far I'm in and the author has shown no signs of stopping anytime soon either which means the story will just get worse. I am not meant to like Rou and I get that. However that does not mean that makes this story somehow revolutionary. The villain as the protagonist is done better by literally any other author besides this one. The claims that this is wish fulfillment are accurate, that's how low this story ends up becoming. I don't even hate this series, please don't get me wrong, I just think everything is poorly handled and badly written. The author poorly handled the subject of r*pe and passed it off as a joke. It wasn't funny but that's what is continuously done. This story could be a wonderful psychological horror that I would honestly be obsessed with, especially because we're seeing it from Rou's point of view. The amount of times I thought it would be so much better if the author just made me scared of the main character instead of passing it off as a joke, infuriates me. Make me afraid of Rou. I see him as a disgusting menace but am I afraid? No. The comic relief just makes me angry at him and the author. Make me feel the fear that the women have of him and the slow way he tricks them, describe it. Use imagery, for god's sake! That's impossible though because the author is content writing things out like everything is a diary log and wants it to be comedic for some reason. See what I mean? There's no hope for it. Enjoy the little good bits that are interesting and then throw it away because there's nothing else to get out of it. <<less

I don't get why the bad reviews about it, as it was already explained how he's been living his own life doing just whatever he wants because he wants to live his life to the fullest opposite to what he can only do with his past life.

And don't talk about morals as he already told that he ate evil powerful ESP before i.e. He's been eating human while he's still human.

Well his other reason he wanted to eat them was because he wanted to get their abilities.

He already explained that... more>> it could also happen to him, that a powerful enemy may beat him and eat him but he says that it is also fine if it's his 1st wife who eats him. <<less

The r*pe scenes aside, people are complaining for things they already should have known from the start.

MC does not come from our earth, he comes from an earth where people have ESP powers. From how he describes that place, its a dog eat dog world. So you should already know that he has a dog eat dog mentality.

To add to that, when the MC already makes it clear early on that he wants to life doing whatever he wants you already know that the story is not about some grand... more>> overarching conflict. <<less

Long story short an human is killed with an awesome psychic a ability that follows him to the new world he reincarnated in and basically it's a story of how he becomes stronger and his rise as a psuedo monster king laying low to enjoy more benefits and a lot of fun fights. Aka a rational battle junky for the deadly fights plus leading a life suitable for a slice of life. BTW if you read the manga currently its translated to 149 days, plus it's easier to read and... more>> understand. <<less

I had a soft spot for this novel, it was my first... webnovel. So I desperately wanted to pretend it was good as I read the new translations.
But it's bad guys, just really really bad.
I never cared for any reviews that were all overly emotional with high moral standards like they are the prim proper f*cking Queen of England (Some people just like reading nasty characters doing debauchery, get off your bloody high horse and jerk off to an orgy). But this story has nothing.
After the first... more>> 3 volumes, it rapidly goes downhill as any semblance of character development, plot, suspense, and good s*x scenes disappear. It just becomes an endless drone of MC gaining new [abilities], reading 3 paragraphs of each of the 500+ new abilities he gains and never, neverrrrr seeing them again.
I read more paragraphs about explanations of abilities and descriptions of minor characters/monsters than the actual cast of main characters themselves. It is such a f*cking waste, the author had so many novel ideas that separate this story from others but s/he just couldn't capitalize on it and wrote a dead-end with endless world-building and minimal plot. It can't even be a good smut novel. f*cking waste. <<less

This one is actually quite bad, much better than some of the oh so tasty tr*sh that this site has to offer, but it is quite a funny situation, the most effective way to read this one is directly from the wiki, there you'll be able to find most, if not all, chapters machine or google translated and fan edited (which makes it much more readable).

It is a wish fulfilment story, the guy has the ability to absorb the power from what he eats and it gets ridiculous fast, the... more>> ability is not balanced in any way by the author.

It has some touchy subjects too, the "r-word", most known as s*xual interc**rse without consent, being an example.

In the end it is probably not a story I would recommend, but it is quite easy to read/binge, the chapters from what I remember are mostly quite short and the plot is not the most complex to put it nicely, so yeah if you've got nothing else to read and want some of that r/shittyfoodp*rn vibe this is for you, it is exactly like the food it's just easy enough to make to make it barely acceptable as a meal.

Do keep in mind that it has been a few years since I've read this so take what I say with a grain of salt. <<less

So I actually enjoy a kingdom building novels a whole lot. I love the fact that ovarou works hard on making his whole army stronger and truly cares for them. The flaw is that there is no major plot or goals whatsoever. Become stronger, get all around me stronger, make friends, make money, beat enemies, ens*ave or eat enemies, and then repeat all over. Is a completely recycled story.

I like an MC who does not pretend to be a hero or righteous.

I'm kind of in between but eh whatever.

So I didn't read the novel I read the manga and still lot of awful reviews but I still like Re:Monster I mean as one of the reviews stated Rou is monster not a hero as if he'd save someone for no apparent reason think of this like real life as if you'd save someone without anything in return. Humans are a bunch of greedy a**holes and they're too much of a coward to admit it tho few are real heroes to them... more>> I applaud.

As I was saying Rou only attacked when it benefits him and counter attack when enemies fight him as if he'll risk his allies life. I mean it mentions some real events like corruption in our society. A lot of people doing things for their own gain. I'm pretty sure most of you know, "Greed is the root of all evil" Be it money, fame, power, and many other things a person may desire we will always be affected by our sins.

But I know the one reading this has their own opinion so to whom you may be read the novel or manga cause to me it's pretty decent. <<less

This novel represents a MC that was reincarnated into a goblin from a futuristic world after being killed by his female friend. It then depicts his life as a goblin in a medieval world of different races and magic trying to build his kingdom.

I personally liked it since the game elements are constant, and will probably stay till the end. Also liked the fact that MC doesn't change his personality in same situations (he kills when he needs to, he r*pes when he wants to), and I guess this is... more>> what chased away most of the people. They probably didn't like the fact the MC is evil and does what he wants to improve his living conditions and get satisfied, however it was never stated that MC is good and follows our modern day morals, was it ?

Recommend for people that love game elements, fast progression, and MC that doesn't care about morals and does what he wants. <<less

It was fun from the start. The daily input like it was a diary was a fun new thing. But do it too much and it just becomes tiresome.

Spoiler

I mean, a goblin only needs less than 285 days to almost be a God? Seriously? Also, it is good and all the we don't have too much action and more on slice of life or whatever you call it, but if majority of your volume, is about hot springs, having parties, hot springs, eating this, hot springs, eating that, hot springs, I drunk that alcohol. Oh wait, did I mention hot springs? Because if I didn't, the author sure did... a lot. If not those, on rare accounts, it is like, I did this, then beat that. This subordinate evolved and here are is a wall of text you won't really care about (Sure I would care if it is with the 8 Demon Generals). The monsters here are like this, I am putting this wall of text here because I can't use any other means to introduce these once or twice mentioned monsters. I mean, there are some real action with major bosses, but come on, those major actions are countable by the finger of my faphand by day 285. Soon, it led me to just skim through the chapter and hope to the gods out there that a major conflict would just effing start already.

It is a good time-burner but don't binge it because you will get bored, real fast.

Also, if you want to read up to at least Day 370, google "Re:Monster wiki". You will find a wikia. Go to the Releases -> Novel. HF reading this. You've been warned. DO NOT BINGE IT. <<less

I think this was my first novel and even though RPG-elements are present, I am still not convinced this is comparable with other RPG-novels. In Re:Monster, Rou hasn't displayed all his skills, ever. The only moments the skills are mentioned are when they are used or when it is being synthesized. Also, even though people say its RPG, then why is his objective 'survive' instead of 'beat evil and help justice'?
Either way, maybe it's just because the translations from Re:Translations are slow so I had to read it at... more>> wiki, but I think it is slowly losing it's touch.
I recommend this for reincarnation-as-non-human-lovers and people who likes battle scenes. <<less

This is the first Japanese LN I've read. I'm really addicted to the story. It's like a diary of a person's life, who was reincarnated into a continuously evolving monster, that experiences different circumstances in a fantasy world. The MC (Rou) becomes too OP, but I'm always surprised how all his skills are used for future circumstances. His new powers are always needed for a particular purpose in future scenarios, which makes this story even more interesting.

I really liked it at first, but it's mostly just boring lists of food (monsters) at this point. From the other reviews I came into it expecting the MC to be a proper goblin, raping and pillaging without a care, but he's really not nearly as awesome as they describe. He constants lets food (humans) live for one reason or another, and almost purely kills in self defense. Instead of finding stuff to kill to strengthen himself or get lots of money, he wastes time doing stuff to the benefit... more>> of towns he doesn't even rule.

There are plenty of problems with the setting too (especially summons, you'll know what I mean when you get to it if you've ever played an RPG), but the biggest problem is how boring it gets. The log format makes things pretty dry, and eventually it ends up basically being "I killed stuff, it tasted great with alcohol" and then long paragraphs describing monsters that will probably never be mentioned again.

I'd recommend the manga instead because it avoids some of the issues and the girls are cute, as well as avoiding most of the huge blocks of pointless text. <<less

i dropped it in dark continent so sad man this was perfect at first, with perfect world building and interesting characters, if you skipped all the food descriptions maybe it will only be half of the actual content, I really don't get why the author does this, he is wasting such a good material and take his time to explain food over an over again, a waste, it has 3 or 4 good battles and adventures but is so exasperating to see how he tries to fill 1 volume of... more>> only food and bad battle descriptions, it really has a lot of potential, that's why it's so bad that the author doesn't respect his readers and try to give garbage content that even the translators are not willing to work with.

And about how he get more merciless the more time it's pass is so weird like there's sometimes like when he killed a guy who has a special trait t just for eating him and killing him mercilessly (even if he was just chilling without doing anything wrong, that's when I knew the author completely forgot about how his MC was), when he needs to battle someone I get it but the line between killing innocent people and leaving people die just because it's a problem or contrary he just wants to eat them like if they were mindlessly animals, is pretty thin and after how the author shows him as a

and that he thought that the monster were nasty for kidnapping or imp**gnating people it really shows a before and after the author forgot about his own history.

It would have been way better seen him improving the main base with his own ideas, than having more than half of the book is about how he eats and what he wants to eat.

The author knows how to write good battles but he skipped them, he knows how to hype war but he skipped them, he has nice dungeons ideas and adventures but he skipped them, he has a developing base but he skipped them, he has awesome characters that have nice skills but he never shows neither develops them, he skipped all of that, but nooo when it comes to describing food and how much he wants to eat something or another person it's all nice, so sad great potential bad delivery and lack of respect to the reader. Ah, this story is one of the first web novels I've ever read. I definitely recommend starting it, as the beginning is great for anybody who likes the tags. Tons of imaginative stuff with game-style leveling and honestly a fun and interesting battle/kingdom building story. The problem is that things don't stay the same throughout the story and some people might not like the changes. So here's my breakdown of the 2 main issues:

Battle: fighting against humans and monsters is a pretty big part of this story and the starting... more>> chapters do a great job with it. It's really exciting to watch the MC level up from nothing with his only starting cheat being one that lets him gain abilities from things he eats. So while it is a completely busted skill, it still feels fair because he has to beat the stuff first. Basically a growth boost. However, as the story progresses the MC winds up more and more OP. Battles are still important but they stop being the main part of the story. The focus shifts instead to building the strength of his own forces and getting involved in national issues. With the MC doing more non-battle things and becoming more OP, the battles lose some of their initial excitement. The big ones are still fun but the feeling is different.

"Romance": putting this one in quotes because of all the r*pe. There is non-r*pe romance in the story, certainly, but the author seems to think that drugging a woman until she says yes means that the ensuing s*x is not r*pe. That is what makes it so off-putting and caused all of the negative reviews on this site. The story has a dark tone at times, sure, but this particular type of r*pe is tossed in so casually that I can't help but think that the author honestly thinks that it's fine. The MC is fine with it, the support characters are fine with it, even the victims are fine with it later. For anybody with a basic understanding of consent though, it just leaves you feeling dirty and wondering why nobody understands how wrong it all is. I still love the story and the author moves past it pretty quick but it's like a permanent stain on an otherwise awesome story.

My final suggestion is to give the story a shot. If you start to feel like you don't like it anymore then drop it without worrying about whether or not it will go back to how it was when you first started, because it won't. If you are worried about the r*pe in question, then drop this around the time
Spoiler

the elves show up

[collapse]
. That is when things start getting offensive. There is mention of r*pe before this though, as the story establishes early that goblins r*pe humans when possible. But I would argue that only the incidents perpetrated by the MC are truly unpleasant because the initial revelation is treated with a dark tone and a sense of severity. So basically, I feel laughing off r*pe is where this author crosses the line and that mentioning it as a dark part of a harsh world is fine. If you feel that any sort of mention of r*pe is too much though, then don't bother with this at all. <<less

Starts really good but the author can't make it work after the initial premise wears down, once the MC gets a lot of powers the story becomes pointless because he is a one man kingdom, one man army and one man side characters, read it for the coolness and drop it once you read past the acolyte evolution

I read this on the wiki for the longest time. It's a good isekai for someone new to the genre who wants something edgy.

The protagonist is cool and powerful, but you can't really feel any tension. He never really faces anything stronger than him; he has plenty of opponents that bring him down to 1 HP and force him to fight on his last leg, but he almost never says "Huh. Ok. Shit. Better run away for a bit using my infinite list of skills, heal up using my super-god-regeneration,... more>> train up on countering this specific foe, then come back and wreck them. This would only take roughly 20 minutes."

It is always a headfirst brawl that he will always win.

He has piles of clever ideas, but there is always that 1 extra step you wonder why he doesn't take. Undead-Spider Taxi? What about undead-trains. What about improving/implementing a sewage system maintained by auto-casting skills and slimes and such? What about...

Body-clones that can scout and communicate long distances? Wait. Body... clones... clones that, even if they can't fight, can scout and get information on the weaknesses of the super-boss of this territory/domain/dungeon/kingdom/continent? Which would allow the protagonist, with his piles of super skills and dozens of specific abilities, to fuse/combine skills that nearly do what he needs until he can capitalize on that weakness LONG before meeting that enemy?

-- --

That said if you can get through that and just enjoy him winning at life this is fun to read. Some of his combos are truly clever (although most are at least one of Wasteful, Idiotic or Needlessly-Risky, but work out without downsides because he wins at life).

This is the grandfather of all "OP MC sexes women and becomes a god" novels from the past 5 years, whether or not they involve reincarnation. It's probably the one of the best demonstrations of the good and bad aspects of "Skill system MC" right up there with Everyone else is a Returnee and Kumo Desu.

If it didnt use the "Skill System" idea or the "MC ALWAYS picks the highest power evolution" or even swapped picking his evolution to "MC evolves based on what he has been doing" this would be 10/10, with me recommending it to everyone I can find. <<less
