After The Vicious Cannon Fodder Was Reborn

Growing up in an orphanage since he was a child, Tao Mu, who had suffered so much, never thought that his life was actually a result of picking up the wrong script.

Eighteen years ago, two children were born at the same time, but due to the negligence of the medical staff their name tags were switched. Tao Mu, who was supposed to be born in a wealthy family, was sent to an orphanage instead.

Eighteen years later, the mistake was discovered. Tao Mu originally thought everything could go back on track. However, his parents and siblings who were supposed to be the closest family disliked him deeply, lovers and friends also turned their backs on him.

Receiving such a shock, Tao Mu completely revealed his dark side, becoming a vicious cannon fodder that everyone hated. In the end he found himself utterly isolated and committed su*cide by jumping off a building.

After being reborn, Tao Mu was surprised to find that he actually lived in a book. The male protagonist in the book was the Silly White Sweet** who was the other baby that he had mistakenly switched identities with. As for him, he was just the vicious cannon fodder encountered by the Silly White Sweet in his sweet and pampered life.

Tao Mu: f*ck this plot, and f*ck this stereotypical routine. I won’t be playing along in this life!

In other words, this is a dog blood story of a highly provoked cannon fodder no longer mistreating himself to please anyone after being reborn. Instead he will be relying on himself to build an entertainment empire that will catapult him to the top.

** person who is s*upid but in a sweet way

The couple is sweet and MC is overpowered but within reason and it is stated at the start its a Gary Stu novel so you get what you ask for. But the rampant nationalism really sours it and strips it of its charm. Ok for an intro to the tropes but definitely not recommended for rereading. <<less

For BL novels I tend to notice they focus on two extremes, love or story. I.e. More on the love element to where the plot barely matters or more on the plot where the love barely matters.

This story is great in the sense love isn't the main focus, yet the love is still very sweet. It doesn't focus on love but at the same time doesn't push the love interest aside. They don't fall in love immediately nor do they act like background boards. They feel like real people actually... more>> falling in love with each other because they like the others personality, not just falling together cause the plot says so. This novel has so much detail but it's a show not tell kind. Each character matters and feels alive. Start reading and you won't want to stop. <<less

1st Life - The origin of all troubles to come
In the first life, Tao Mumu was jealous of Shen Er, who had everything going for him. While he was an orphan, Shen Er was raised in a happy family surrounded by friends and admirers. Tao Mumu became obsessed with Shen Er and even thought that if given the chance to be Shen Er, he could do it better. Shen Er falls in love with a guy and tragically, the guy is only with him to destroy him and his family. His mother and sister blamed him with his sister hating him the most. Shen Er met a tragic end. Tao Mumu cast black magic on Shen Er, stealing his good luck halo.

2nd Life up to Nth Live
With black magic helped, Tao Mumu got swapped with Shen Er after birth. Tao Mumu then became Shen Yu while Shen Er became Tao Mu. At the age of 18, both will cross paths and the birth switch will be known. Shen Yu with the stolen halo will always rise to the top and Tao Mu will meet a tragic end. However, the ending of each life varied according to the changes made by Shen Yu and Tao Mu. It could be Shen Yu's death followed by retaliation against Tao Mu or Tao Mu's death followed by retaliation against Shen Yu. Their ending was somehow always at the age of 28.

In every reincarnation, Shen Yu will regress while Tao Mu will progress. In short, little by little, the halo stolen by Shen Yu, will go back to Tao Mu. And so, during the nth reincarnation, Tao Mu has had enough.

Recent Life
The story starts with Tao Mu having memories of his previous life. He decided to stop pursuing Shen's family recognition and started his own happiness. He tried to avoid the surname Shen at all costs. However, the story plot will somehow drag him to them. Toward the end of the story, the stolen halo manages to 'go back' to Tao Mu. Most of the main characters had a dream of all the life they had lived. We, as readers also find out the reason for their actions in every life.

In short, Tao Mumu's obsession with being Shen Er started all of this, and Shen Er's obsession with being accepted by his family led to the tragic end of each life. And so, when Tao Mu let go of that obsession, the plot derailed.

[collapse]

Summary of my thoughts:
I like what the book was trying to discuss. We always believed that the grass was greener on the other side. Tao Mumu thought that he could do better than Shen Er. He ridiculed Shen Er for not being a true young master. Why work so hard when you have family, friends, and supporting characters that could do all that for you? And he was proven wrong in his recent life. Without hard work, even with the abundance of resources, he was nothing. In short, you can change identity with anyone but, you'll never be able to carry the same charm as them.

The writer also had an obsession. They prefer to tell readers instead of showing it. And so, we had to go through long paragraphs and repeated information. I skimmed most of it. <<less

On this auspicious day, at the expense of my pending assignments and submissions, I announce that I have finally completed reading this story. I will give it a solid 4/5 ratings, mainly because:

  1. Male protagonist Tao Mu: OP ML, very independent and self reliant, has a genuinely ruthless but kind personality which is shown in multiple occasions throughout the story, but without making him seem like a white flower, too kind/dumb/overly vicious for his own good, etc downers. He has a clear bottom line, is fairly tolerant towards those annoying him without crossing it, but for those who do cross this bottom line, he is merciless. He has a clear mindset and reward/payback view.
  2. Male lead: Won't mention the name since it is not revealed early who actually the ML is. The romance factor of this book is certainly lacking, but it does get better in the latter half of the story. ML is capable, reliable, protective, etc etc, but at the same time, Tao Mu is on a completely equal level, shoulder to shoulder with the male lead. There are basically no scenes of Tao Mu being a damsel in distress and ML a knight in shining armour saving the day. They have an equal status in relationship, and it is shown in a detailed way how Tau Mu is actually worthy of being on equal grounds with such a guy. Although there is actually not much romantic scenes in the story, what is mentioned is quality over quantity.
  3. Plot: Unlike many other Chinese novels where dog blood and cat wars are rampant without any basis, this one is not at all extreme to extreme level, quite satisfying (logically), and importantly, there are certain reasons as to 'why is Tau Mu and his family incompatible', 'why was Tau Mu reincarnated', 'why the story progressed to such a state', 'why was Tau Mu so miserable in his last life', 'how is Shen Yu, without meaning to, is able to implicate Tao Mu', 'why does Shen Yu thinks the way he thinks'.
  4. Characters: All the characters, especially the protagonists and villains, have depth. They are not written one dimensionally. Each character is given a unique personality, and there is also a reason provided for their "unique" traits when dealing with Tao Mu/Shen Yu. Every character has done what he/she has done for a crucial reason, which even includes inviting trouble at their doorsteps.
  5. Writing style and translation: Not gonna lie, this novel is BIG! There is a lot of unimportant information/subplot mentioned in the story, but with my experience of reading so many (Chinese) web-novels, I will prefer reading extra information rather than try and fail to follow a story because of lack of proper details, explanation, backgrounds, thinking and logic, etc. Overall, this trait makes the story quite immersive.
Another point which makes this story so immersive and compelling is the very good translation. This story is quite well written in terms of linguistics and the translators (TheBLMuse) have done it a great justice, whether it be wordings, phrases, sentence structures, underlying meanings, idioms, etc. It is not an exaggeration to say that the translators are the sole reason I was able to understand the story. It would have been absolutely impossible to make this story coherent by using MTL. The best part is, their website has led me to discover many other stories to satisfy my fiction cravings, which I am quite happy about. So great thanks to the translators.

I’m a bit torn on how I will rate this novel. Most of the time what makes a good book for me is the ending and I can fully say that this book is one of those that has such satisfying ending that I can ignore the bad plot before.

Tbh, I feel like the chapters could be reduced to 200 maybe because most of the times the author can have 1-2 paragraphs of repetition that I had to scroll past it many times.

It was bit tough to past the first... more>> 30 chapters especially when the ML hasn’t shown up. This was a very slow pace book that it took me some times before finishing it.

Half the time, I was bored that I almost stopped but then the author managed to hook me up again.

I can only say if you want to try reading this, don’t expect such a fast face-slapping or even lovey dovey much. This has mostly politics in a way and not to mention lots of filming things.

But anyway, the ending is satisfying. All the villains got what they deserved. And the hidden plot twist was also a nice surprise.

Will I recommend this? Yes, if you love a rebirth and revenge story

Will I read this again? Nah, probably just some part but not all cause I can’t stand reading all those chapters of repetition and descriptions 😂 <<less

I wanted to give 2.5 stars actually but I gave 0.5 more for ML and also cause there is no option. Okay, so I understand why people liked this novel and also why people hated too. I also had very mixed feelings about this novel

The beginning of the story is really solid no doubt. Though there are unnecessary details but it was good. I really liked MC and ML both of their characterization is build up nicely by the author. Even though the villains can be brain-dead and annoying but... more>> it is in acceptable amount.

Buttttttt as you cross 240-50 chapters story starts dragging. I felt like author themself felt tired of writing (still they never forget to give unnecessary details). To be honest I felt like after Shen family knows MC's identity then author would make some big drama, some face slapping for few chapters then we will have end the story and some extras. But nope, instead it started becoming bland, it's not like it doesn't have plot but it moves way too slow. Since we are are kind of nearing end, I had expected from author to pickup the story line and speed up. But it never happened, it was quite let down since we had good story pace. And I was expecting some dramatic revelation when Shen family knows about him because it was stretched so far like almost till 230 or something but when it actually happens it felt so flat that I didn't even noticed it and had read twice to confirm. At the end of the story had really good twist too but again author was not able to punch it properly and it landed way it too soft.

Later suddenly story becomes really REALLY dramatic at the end. Since we know that technically story's main plot has ended but author still dragged the story for few solid 10-15 chapters. Like why?? I just skipped them all till the last chapter which was really long for no apparent reason because again author just stuffed a very VERY unnecessary details even at the last scene. So yeah the flow of the story was not constant, it would have been better if story would have ended around 200.

To be honest I really would I have loved to see Tao Mu's acting career more, yes he is very good actor with a lot experience and we won't really see his struggles much but you can see he really loved acting and I loved him enjoying his time with his friends in college, his filming scenes, his hard work in improving his acting. But author wanted too much from the story and caused not only to fall at end it also caused some characterization of characters, like MC and ML at end to kind of collapse. As I said in the first para that author really took lot of time on MC and kind of on ML but towards the end I really didn't even recognise them. They acted so diff out of nowhere, yes it does show growth and all but it's like you know someone for very long time and you know that they are very sensitive to the loud noises an loud music but one day you suddenly see them blasting very loud rock hardcore music in their room 💀

About side characters, yes they very carved out well, all the necessary side characters were fleshed out good but problem is that that again author took so much time on these characters to come alive but after some times they barely appears in story again. I'm not saying that all the characters should be around MC all the time but author doesn't even mention them for long time for show that they are having development. And about the antagonists, well they were also drawn out good and some of them even had good character development but except the only one character that pissed me off so badly was none other than Shen Yan, like that bi$ch I just wanted to grab her by hair and throw her out of the fu#king story!!

Anyways story in first was really good, story in 2nd half was mehhh so do read you like face slapping, weak to strong kind of stories, with good and strong MC and caring gentle green flag (😲) ML <<less

I'm not completely DNF-ing this but I think I just need to take a break from this, which means I may or may not come back to it lol.

Points for future me to remember: when they tagged this 'romantic subplot', they meant it lol.

I finally got to the point where they consummated their relationship hahaha it took 260 chapters lol. But that aside, the story was pretty enjoyable.

Its really focused on MC's story, and less on the romance.

what tipped me over the edge into DNF territory was that I was just kind of exhausted. MC starts planning revenge on the Shem family and while they're a gross family, I just kept thinking: dayum can't MC just be happy and enjoy his happy life with his found family and hot hubby? Like there was already sooooo much dog blood faceslapping. It just got exhausting

I was in the mood for a face slapping novel so I read this and I was not disappointed. Sometimes you just wanna read about a MC who faceslaps ALOT of people and this is the novel that does just that.

The MC does have a lot of gold fingers but most of them are due to legit explainations so I found it quite interesting.

Shen Yu irritated me to the max so I enjoyed how Tao Mu slapped the heck outta him. I also liked the explaination at the end that tells us how the story begins.
Spoiler

Of how ori Tao Mu/Shen Yu takes Shen Er's fate.

A very interesting idea.

Romance is slight. I would say I like how Tao Mu gradually falls in love with ML. ML is also not the typical overbearing type. I like their relationship progression but it is a subplot for this novel. The novel focuses more on MC and his achievements and faceslapping methods.

I took off one star because the author tends to ramble and some chapters are just so long and full of elaborations that are not necessary that I skimmed it.

Translation is topnotch. Thank you translator. Very easy to read.

All in all, a good novel with a nice concept. <<less

i was hoping for a lot of this novel, as the setting was quite interesting. however, I think the narrative's pacing is too slow and delays the MC's motive to drive the plot progression. there's a lot of off-tangents regarding his journey to becoming a "bankroller"... like I know that he's eager to use his many golden fingers from his past life and it also shows the readers he's very multi-talented; however, to me it felt too cramped and he's doing a bit much (and supposedly this is only the... more>> first arc). the progression of his strengths is quite awkward to me that it feels like he's overcompensating... but I digress.

the face-slapping element is also unsatisfying (idk how it will be in the future chapters but I'm not interested in finding out anymore) and not petty enough for me. I like it when face-slapping fights are a bit catty. though the MC's personality is good, I think fits well as a Male Lead rather than an MC. I rather see him find a shou than see him be a shou lol

all in all, I think me and this novel just doesn't fit well together, so I'm dropping it early <<less

Pretty good. MC is capable and calculating with backup plan after backup plans, yes very Gary Stu. Almost every character here is a scheming and profit-seeking individual and I like how the story expanded on their motivations. Face-slapping is superb and realistic. MC even scolded netizens for not fact-checking and believing everything they read, and I like that. Romance is so WHOLESOME, and I have squealed so many times. Translation is SUPERB and got the humor across. But I got tired of reading at about 240 chapters and just spoiled... more>> myself as to the true ending lol. The only thing I didn’t like was the intense pro-militia propaganda that peppered the whole story but that’s just my preference 😁. <<less

[collapse]

There is some serious big mistake in the script.

Others already gave other exemples about Shen Yu and plot hole. Personnally I really pity him. He is probably the only real innocent one in the "villain white lotus". As stated in the story, his adopted father and brother noticed that people tend to lose brain cells around him and use him in the business world to make good deals.

About Shen Yu himself his aura blinds him, he is incapable, truly incapable, to understand what is wrong with his vision. 1+1=2 if the plot needs him not to understand it, he will not understand it. And people in the book noticed it too. I think readers didn't all see it because it's in one or two phrases maybe one time in one paragraph.

For the MC and the ML there is another exemple : The ML is described as a mature, very serious, oriented business person. And at first that's how we read him. Then he met the MC and he changes but not deep down. Then brutally he becomes a teasing a person, not mature anymore etc It's more like the author changed the character than a grow in character.

MC & ML they are a cute couple. I really like MC's composed family. They deserve more time screen. Same for ML's family.

I did not yet read the entire story but seriously the real sister is the true villain. Only seconded by the real brother and by far in my opinion. Not even talking about the ex.

I'm not sure even though I don't like Shen Yu I'll appreciate the future ending. <<less

Not gonna lie, it started strong.. MC's mental condition and attitude was on point.. He started from scratch and tried to right the wrongdoings in his previous life.. Then the story took a huge leap and our MC became op.. Literally, he could do just anything.. And once again the favourite trope where the reborn character is an actor or programmer came crashing at its highest speed..

Here MC is all in one.. Actor + programmer + CEO + stock advisor + cook etc etc, you just name... more>> it.. He can do anything better than the actual veteran experts.. Ohh~ he actually achieved these ALL within just six months of his rebirth..

It was supposed to be in 2008.. Yet netizens, mostly had low to nonexistent IQ, had nothing to do better than b*tching others out on internet every 24X7.. Any MC's video or post would get tens of millions of views and comments within a day.. Even nowadays people aren't that active on social media when internet is faster and cheaper..

As the story progressed, it became a bit boring and full of predictable face slapping.. Original story's protagonist is annoying.. Other antagonists are simply s*upid AF..

Gonna drop this for now.. Don't know I may come back to resume reading.. Perhaps will change the rating then if the story becomes a little bit more interesting.. <<less

As for the explanation for MC's skills, you can read the review from qeesa.

I'll explain the other things.

The premise of this novel is that you have to consider that it isn't the 'start' but the 'end'

Spoiler

The black magic the protagonist shou used in the 'first life' is a sacrificial spell that 'switched his fate with MC's'. The sacrificed was the shou's soul (think 3 souls and 7 spirits, in my opinion) and our MC's obsession towards his family. This spell doesn't work simply, first, it has to have sacrifices from both sides and that 'both of them' must be linked in this fate. As was mentioned in other reviews, MC gave up on his relationship with his family, this means his obsession has diminished (over time after many lifetimes) which led to the spell weakening until it become nothing (hence the shou becoming more and more miserable). The other aspect of the spell is that it's 'switching their fates' aka they basically switched their lives, it's not just that MC become an orphan and the shou become a part of a rich family. There is also connection to the first life. As in the people's perception of them switched. The protagonist shou was an unscrupulous and mean person who flatters others in hopes of stepping on MC and steal/ take advantage of him, aka a cunning person. While MC was a kind and hardworking young master of a rich family loved by everyone. It was mentioned several times in the later chapters when the shou is having a downfall that the things MC experienced before is now experienced by the shou and people slowly saw the shou in a bad light despite him being s*upidly naive (in the last life, his soul diminished so much, he become nothing but a good looking fool). This is in direct correlation with the fact that the spell lost it's effectiveness. It's slowly returning their fate back like it was before (in their first lives), so the people's perception in the first lives came back

[collapse]

To understand the story, the readers need to know the basic that

is the main plot of the story. While the story is about how MC sheds the scum family from his life and climbed to the top, it was actually a story of the MC regaining back his life, his fate and turning the previous bad end into a good end (it's a second chance in every way). <<less

begining is 4 stars, middle 3 stars and the end is more like 2 stars.

As some others said, could have been a great novel but the author is too wordy. Details are great but this author gets off on tangents before finally coming back around. By chapter 113 I was skipping big chunks of text and not missing anything and by the time the twist happened I was bored.

Also this is a slow burn romance, I know it's supposed to be "realistic" for the MC with his emotional baggage not... more>> to jump in quickly, and I didn't want him to jump the ML immediately, but damn some inkling of feelings would have been nice.

Spoiler

MC went from pushing away the ML's feelings for 100+ chapters, to "considering" his feelings for like 3 chapters, to BAM chapter 145 he randomly accepts and they are deep in love promising forever. Then MC distances himself randomly. Then chapter 226 ish the MC doesn't want to spend spend anytime with MLs family even though they welcomed him openly and he wants to hide his relationship, going many chapters not even mentioning ML. MC wants to hide his relationship so that his career as an actor can bloom. 259 is when MC confesses his past life to ML and finally gives his body to ML and chapter 273 is when MC let's go of everything and announces to the world they are together.

Actually, the romance in book is poorly written, I read books for romance but I almost wish this book didn't have any romantic plot.
[collapse]

The bit with the white lotus (original MC) has been covered in other reviews.

Spoiler

the twist was okay. The original world wasn't a book at all but original Tao Mu used vudoo to switch his luck with original Sheng Yu, but was still jealous. OG Shen Yu dies and OG Tao Mu can't let go seeing how everyone still loves Shen Yu so they get trapped in the long reincarnation.

I liked Shen Cheng, the older brother, wish he was written differently

I also agree with others the pro China/nationalism is very strong in this book, which I always find odd in BL novels. I do understand that I'm not the target audience, so while I do roll my eyes loudly at those parts, I also just skipped them. The author didn't exactly straight up dis other countries like some novels.

Usually I'm into reborn cannon fodders reversing their fates, however, with this one I'm really not feeling it. I went up to ch. 29 but I still can't muster up any kind of enthusiasm for the story, nor can I feel any kind of attachment to the main character (or any of the characters), to want to know more about what becomes of him. Some might like this, I personally just find the book boring and dragging.

Honestly, I feel conflicted when rating this. It feels a bit wrong for giving this such a high rating, but also right in some way.

The points of this novel that I liked:

  • MC is strong, hard-working with high IQ and EQ, basically op but not inexplicably so as he had learned and experienced a lot during his last life
  • ML is not a scumbag
  • a lot of likeable side characters
  • the eloquence of the author/translation shown through the subtle digs and classy insults
  • the plot itself if well-rounded, I quess
Points I feel conflicted about:

  • at times it felt like I was reading a pro Chinese government propaganda novel. The nationalistic message really shone through despite this being BL.
  • sometimes things were so exaggerated, it was ridiculous (could be explained by premise that they are in a book world though)
  • A lot of braindead/weirdly wired people (again, could be explained by the book premise and plot halo)
  • some minor issues that had me think "Why the f did they do that?" or "What happened there?"

For example: I still don't get why the og. Book ML had to smear himself when publishing his relationship with the og. Book MC.

Then there is the self proclaimed fiance of the ML. What happened to her?

The scene when everyone gathered in the og. Book MC's hospital room after everyone regained the past lifes' memories felt so surreal and ridiculous. All of a sudden, everyone puts aside past grudges to play a drama only to go back to fighting til death outside the hospital.

Maybe it's just a comprehension issue because of MTL (I had to mtl the second half of the novel). So I won't judge too hard.

i have mixed feelings about this... there’s a lot of repeated information throughout the story which we could do without... entertaining... there were characters in the initial third of the story that seemed important but just suddenly disappeared... but overall entertaining.

MC was too much of a Gary Stu.

He wants to be an actor because he is just to talented at acting, however we have never actually seen him acting in anything for the first 100 chapters. He does a gig or two as a stuntman in the beginning, but that's not acting. So far he has spent more energy scheming against people and creating a lamer version of Weibo, which he named FlyNews. I don't know if it got lost in translation and the Chinese name sounds great, but the... more>> English translation just sounds weird.

I lost my interest at the part where ML confessed. I cannot feel any chemistry between MC and ML. MC's character is quite dull and boring. The author obviously tried to make him seem like a complicated person by making him do things and feeling emotional in regards to his past life and current family, but it's very crude and ham handed. <<less

A good one, I MTL'ed later parts. Honestly, it's engaging enough and the drama/dog blood part is brilliant.

Boyyyyy, did I just get blindly hooked when the MC danced at the pub around the beginning of the story! Tbh this is exactly the kind of shou I'm always looking for. Somewhat reminds me of Zhou Yun sheng from face of devil🥵❤️

The ML is nice, loving and well.. Pretty cliche.

LET'S TALK ABOUT SHEN YU THOUGH.

Spoiler

I truly couldn't hate him (before the truth came out), just assumed he was really really s*upid and sticky and just straight up creepy. But maaaaan the entire truth behind the reincarnation? That. Was. A. Complete. Stunner. He's really pathetic, truly.

At first I thought this was a story where the "original protagonist" of the "novel" was not gonna be a scheming green tea bit*h instead of the "kind" persona that everyone sees.. But boy was I wrong! The "original protagonist" turned out to be worse than the usual :o

Also, I really like shen Chen more than Li xiaoheng🤭 <<less
