In the previous life, Jiang Xuening was the benchmark of a Mary Su. For the throne of the Empress, she hooked up and messed around with men.

When she was dating the Emperor, the rebel is her spare tire;

When she was dating the student, the teacher is her spare tire;

When she was dating the boss, the subordinate is her spare tire;

When she was befriending a woman, a man is her spare tire……?

Every day is a Shura Field! (Hiks)

Anyway, no matter who the Emperor is, she wants to be the Empress!

The men all thought that they had walked into the silly and sweet innocent girl’s heart, but they unexpectedly had walked into the fish pond of the scum girl, and the girl also worked as a part-time King of the Sea.

Then the Palace changed.

She died.

Heaven gave her a chance to start again.

She vowed to earnestly repent and mend her ways.

She absolutely did not expect that, she was just rebirthed at the time she [already] started messing around and it’s too late to change!!!

Jiang Xuening was angry: The crooked Heaven was just playing with a human’s life! Your Great Aunt, me, was born with eight legs! Believe it or not, when my temper comes up [BEEP――]

The Heaven’s heart attack is more severe: What if the ship capsized again?

Jiang Xuening with a cold and indifferent face: Helpless.

All right, it’s all a talk only.

How to break up safely without offending the big guys?

Great novel worth the read, thanks so much for translating this! ❤️ though 2nd ML Zhang Zhe’s storyline was so short and heartbreaking 😭😭😭 overall, its a nice read (MTL was alright)... But!!! the drama adaptation was even more painful! It’s a happy ending one but I wouldn’t say it’s for light hearted readers like me...

First off, I watched the drama before reading the novel. Started with available English translations but eventually couldn't wait and MTLed it. Watching the drama first was a big help because you know the flow of the story as I recalled certain scenes from the show while reading.

Comments on MTL, no prior experience reading the Chinese version:

1) pronouns are used interchangeablely s/he and I which sometimes make it hard to follow who's speaking or who is referring to who

2) off translations of "先生 = husband = teacher, sir, man of... more>> the house" "**** = eunch" "swordbook = Jianshu" "swordpiano = Daoqin", etc...

3) modified names with weird suffixes ie. Xie Weiku. I don't know if the machine didn't translate part of a word after the name?

4) Expect euphemisms

If you can get through these inconsistencies and decipher the meaning then it's mostly understandable though I may have misunderstood or misinterpreted some things.

There are differences between the drama and the novel... time differences, plots, personalities. To be honest, I was the most surprised with Xie Wei's personality. See below...

Spoiler

I was taken aback by how jealous he gets when Xuening is with other people *coughtheprincessxiaobaootherattendantszhangzhefanyincough, * he doesn't care for the common people as portrayed in Lu Xian's story of when Xie Wei was a scholar fighting for justice from tax corruption. He turned to be revenge driven, apathetic about consequences of war, controlling, and not amicable to others in the latter half. Almost like he has an antisocial personality disorder or maybe he's always had it and he had a mask of a tranquil sage/hermit/saint in the beginning. I mean, yes, he can be aloof from the ongoings of the world but I didn't know he can be detached without empathy.

Xuening sees all of that and accepts him in the beginning of 2nd half? with sadness and pity because of what he's been through even though it was mixed with fear knowing how cruel he was in the previous life then later her feelings turning to love recognizing that despite how he treats others in this life he mostly treats her well (exception teaching moments and **** advances). Finally, she says she'll teach him how to love because he doesn't know how. Xuening is the only person who puts Xie Wei in his place or makes him be lenient or tolerant of others for her sake.

In the drama, I guess it's a good thing the writers gave him more of a heart.

Other differences... Certain characters have gained or will gain their past life memories... It correlates with their death in the past life and somehow transmigrates to the current time line. So I wonder, at the very end if Xie Wei will remember what he did before so he can treat Xuening better and be grateful he has her in this life.

[collapse]

Overall, I still enjoyed the novel mostly reading about the main couple's interactions with one another. I will re-read again when someone has better translations. <<less

I don't know why the top few reviews have rated this poorly, and one of them is without any explanation but inexplicable with several likes?!

I like this novel and it is one of my top favorite novels, I have written the spoilers for this novel in the spoiler thread for those who would like to read ahead. However, I would like to address some of the criticism regarding the novel, in particular, that the novel has no proper plot or characterization.

Firstly, the issue of Jiang Xuening being dislikeable or a... more>> mere plot device. If the reviewer had read the summary, they would see the word 'Mary Sue' and also that Xuening kept 'changing' her capture targets in order to achieve her goals. It explicitly says that FL is NOT supposed to be a perfect happy-go-lucky or adorable girl. In pursuit of her goal to hold the highest position, she clung to and manipulated many people. This is why she decides to change in her second life and 'right the wrongs' that she committed in her first. THAT is the primary plot and goal, plain and simple.

Secondly, if you look at the tags of this novel, one of them is 'Reverse Harem', and if that is not your cup of tea, then fine, just don't read it... Although FL has several options, she only ends up happily married to ML. I heavily disagree with CoolPlane's descriptions and characterizations of the male characters, it feels like they skimmed through and never understood their motivations and background. Each male character represented someone FL had wronged and used, which is why she feels like she has to pave a path for them.

Spoiler

For example, the reviewer argues that ML is the typical cold-like personality with a traumatic past, 2ML is boring and it's unlogical for a subordinate to fall for the Empress, and 3ML is redundant. If you read my spoilers, you can see that the author took the time to flesh out these characters. ML is ruthless but he did love FL because she saved him, so he is indebted to her. He refuses to let emotions get in the way of his revenge until he realizes that he loves her. So he resolutely sacrifices his hand so that FL is unharmed, even though he will no longer be able to play musical instruments.

2nd ML is a stereotypical stalwart dependable official, yet he did fall in love with his capricious queen. Illogical? No. Unexpected? Yes. FL was the Empress who lived vivaciously, and opposites can attract. The reviewer calls him a bore who couldn't get over what happened in his previous life, which is nonsensical??? FL DID commit those actions and reincarnated... The author literally addressed that, and it was FL who broke it off because she knew that if they were together, this horrific past could up in the heat of the moment in an argument and forever break their relationship. Moreover, 2nd ML NEVER wanted FL to find out he reincarnated because he knew FL would be depressed and even more guilty.

Although, I do agree that 3ML actions in the first life were extremely questionable at best and heinous at worst, as MTL does imply that he SA'ed her. This is why he wants to make amends to her and then leaves the defend the border because he knows his actions aren't forgivable.

However, I do not understand what the reviewer meant by 'she suffered humiliation and SA'ed for no reason and didn't fit the character of the ML' I feel like they got confused between the male leads and the previous life. In her second life, she was not SA'ed, and ML never SA'ed her in either life. Also, I don't think ML's feelings for FL were that deep in his first life, as they did not have many meaningful interactions. To say that he 'loved her enough to kill himself after her death' is untrue. At that point in their first life, ML had already successfully achieved his revenge, and the country was running smoothly without him. So, what else did he have to live? He stormed the capital and forced the Emperor to die, his presence was more of a hindrance to the nation than help, so he simply decided to die. As to ML being a vinegar jar, I thought it was rather amusing as he could be protective of FL in the second life. But FL has always rejected his advances until much later.

The most egregious thing that the reviewer has said is that some characters were plot devices, the palace intrigue and overthrowing the empire was 'blah'. Princess Leyang and You Fangyin were strong characters with their own background and motivations. If you read the spoilers, you would know that the Princess willingly married far away to the barbarian nation because she knew her duty as a royal, even though she knew that she would be treated terribly. You Fangyin had the most sorrowful ending and it honestly made me cry.

Heck, even FL's concubine sister Xuehui was a stand-out for me. Normally, when it comes to 'switched at birth' stories, the other daughter is the major antagonist. However, Jiang Xuehui never sunk to FL's level of pettiness in the first life. Nor does she scheme against FL in the second life. She only ever wanted to live as a dignified daughter and marry well within her means. It is admirable, especially her maturity and demeanor.

[collapse]

I hope that readers would give this novel a chance before thumbing their noses. I do think that FL is a flawed but interesting character. Each character had their own motivations and personality, which drives them to specific goals. Even the antagonists were well-written, and FL was caught off guard. <<less

This book is messy af and the author went for feels primarily so a lot of the plot and characterization won't make sense if you think too hard. I wanted to stop reading several times but only kept going because of the live action trailer and how interesting it was. But after completing the book, I'm lowering my expectations for the live action because it won't be like the book (it just can't if they want to air). ALL SPOILERS BELOW. ... more>>
Spoiler

MLs lineup: your true ML is xie wei so don't board the wrong ship. He got your typical traumatic childhood story and mysterious background etc, is calculative and ruthless to the world and himself. Typical ML material. The 2ML, Zhang zhe, is a bore, who lives his life as a upstanding court official but somehow fell for his married empress just through several interactions (what is logic anymore). The 3ML, Yan Lin, is a childhood sweetheart whose family was targeted by the emperor so they all got exiled, frankly I'm not even sure why we need him as a potential male lead.

Lifetimes: first lifetime, the MC is obsessed with becoming the empress, so chased after the imperial prince, did not go to 3ML coming of age ceremony and basically told him to get lost at his moment of need. She got what she wanted and became empress. Somehow managed to flirt and fell in love with 2ML while married. The ML and 3ML returned for their revenge trip (not related to her) overthrow the empire, killed a bunch of people, and put MC under lockdown. The 3ML then got drunk and r*ped, yes it was r*pe and obvious on ch1, the MC. Then repeatedly dub-con her whenever he's drunk, while she semi went along with it to save her life. Along the way she also offered herself as a bed warmer to ML, who's now basically running the country. He told her no but sent her a dagger, we'll learn later that this was for her to defend herself against 3ML which she never did. 3ML then told ML he wanted to be emperor and make MC his empress. That does not go over well. The ML basically forced MC to commit su*cide but before her death, she got ML to promise to save 2ML life, why you ask, because she managed to got him sentenced to prison on fake charges and oh yeah, his sick mom died while he was in jail. To top this all off, ML then commit su*cide using the same dagger because... Reasons I guess.

2nd lifetime after rebirth, MC dropped the empress plan and help 3ML on their exile. She also met up with 2ML (who is also a rebirth so he has his memories) and tried to pursue a happy ending with him. He's a bore and couldn't get over what she did last lifetime, which is a bit nonsensical to me because she hasn't done anything bad in their 2nd lifetime. ML had the opportunity to actually interact more with MC in this lifetime and fell (more?) deeply in love with her. MC eventually realized her own feelings for ML and they got their Happy Ending. You get some nice sexy scenes between them which I don't think will make it into the live action. 3ML also got his memories back at the end and went off to the border in regrets for what he did last lifetime.

There's other plot and characters filling up the pages etc but my conclusion is that the MC character setting is very unlikeable and likely to get scolded if they faithfully adapt this book. She's a very opportunistic user who is willing to use her body for profit, which is realistic but not likeable. The 3ML is also a landmine because yes, he r*ped her and I don't see the necessity for that plot line? She still interacted and cared for him as a friend in their second lifetime and he stopped pursuing her when it was obvious that she didn't like him romantically, even before he got his memories. So the whole r*pe thing and her eventually giving in just cheapened her character even more. She suffered the humiliation for no reason and it also didn't fit the character setting of the ML. That he loved her enough to kill himself following her death yet not enough to protect her in the first lifetime. And the ML is a giant vinegar jar so it just doesn't make sense...

[collapse]

In conclusion, read this if you want but be prepared to turn off your brain and go for the feels. Some characters are unlikable (including the MC) and exist as just plot devices. Oh and the whole palace intrigue and overthrowing the empire is kinda blah too so don't expect much. <<less

I am a fan of this author! So, first you have to know is that FL is not powerful or that smart. What she seeks is just for her to family to really care about her but sadly it does not happen at all. (But her father does feel bad and tries to help). There is no forced, I forgive them and we are all family everything's all good thing going on. She still dislikes her sister (concubine's daughter, they were switched at birth and her sister became a "official"... more>> wife's daughter and the real mother, the concubine died, the one who got kicked out of the house and MC was taken with her). It stays that way because she doesn't need force herself to accept her or her Mom who still treats her as the concubine's daughter and not her own.

So there is actually 3 ML, I won't spoil who the ML is but hint hint: he is ruthless and has a sad past. Their romance actually starts 75%ish into the novel. They share a similar experience in their childhood. It is a bit Mary sue I have to admit and a little draggy some parts (took off only one star). But what I like about it is her development with the ML because they go hand in hand. Also the MLs are very likeable!! I really like the ML and 2nd ML especially. The story is pretty engaging so I do enjoy it and recommend this story and author. ^^ <<less

4.5 4 stars

I'm kind of torn with this one. It did a lot of things well but I felt the end-game romance left a lot to be desired. I am happy it's being translated and still look forward to the drama adaptation (if it ever airs.)

Edit: The drama has aired! So far so good. I think the drama (judging from the trailer) will solve a lot of the issues I had with the novel so I'm looking forward to seeing it play out.

It’s a 3.5

It’s a good novel but MTL makes it hard to read. I wasn’t able to bond with the characters, not sure if that was b/c of MTL or the way the novel is written. The romance part is more bitter than sweet.
