Our MC, Yuri [裕理], always has dead look in his eyes because of his too frequent encounter with misfortunes. One day, he comes up with the idea that his luck may take a turn for the better if he maxes out his Luck stat in the world of VRMMO, and so he steps into the game world under the name Yuri [ユーリ].

He chooses ‘Summoner’ as his job and ‘Bow’ as his weapon—hailed as the strongest of their kind on the game’s strategy guide site—and is raring to go on an adventure, but… they turn out to be the worst job and weapon in the game?!

Furthermore, Yuri also comes to learn that the pure Luck build is ridiculed for being useless in battles. With the triple bad choices (plus the fact that his avatar is a beautiful girl because he picked the option of Random Character Generator!) Yuri falls into despair.

This is an adventure diary of Yuri who will eventually rise to become a player who is known as ‘Raid Boss’, ‘Wild Last Boss’, ‘Why Does a Beginner Weapon Do More Damage Than the Strongest Weapon?!’, and ‘Please Don’t Let the Hidden Boss Wander Around in the Wild!’.

It's unclear where this story will end up long term. Some stories have great starts and fizzle out or drag on. Others have bad starts but get really good as time goes on.

This series starts well, and is consistent keeps going strongly forward.

The synopsis:

Spoiler

Set primarily within the new VRMMO game that is going live, the main character, Yuri, seeks to live a comfortable, easy going life in the game to escape the woes of his life. So he chooses his job (summoner) and weapon (bow) after careful consideration, based on what the strategy guide from the beta said were the most popular and strongest.

And because Yuri has comically bad luck in real life, he seeks to escape that in game and invests all his initial stat points into luck.

Due to the limited facial character customization and his high luck stat, Yuri opts to go with the random generation which has a chance to more greatly alter the appearance.

And then... Yuri quickly finds everything went awry. Instead of making his appearance more masculine, the random character generator made him a beautiful girl. Summoner and bow were actually the weakest, the strategy guide was edited by a troll, and Yuris bad luck had him read it before it was corrected. And Luck stat is considered a tr*sh stat, and archery is dependant on the skill of the player, not rng.

And with 0 strength, the only Bow Yuri can use, is the beginner bow, which is basically a toy bow. Meanwhile summoner can work OK, but essentially requires the character to solo the enemy for a low chance of taming it. But summoner only has skills that work on tamed monsters.

So Yuri essentially ends up with the opposite of what he wanted, a useless character that looks nothing like he had wanted. But he optimistically decides to make the most out of what he got, and see if he can't make it work.

[collapse]

And the story from there becomes very entertaining as Yuri learns to make the most of his limited abilities. The phrase
Spoiler

"If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can imagine"

, is very fitting to the character.

I read a ton of stories all the time, to the point they sometimes just blend together as they are basically the same thing. This story stays distinct and memorable with its energy and humor.

There are better written stories out there, but this one is done pretty well, and is FUN to read. It's also broadly a palate cleanser, as things like the female avatar/GB being used for good comedic effect, rather than h**ny or psychological effects.

This series doesn't take itself super seriously, it is just there to have fun. Give this story a shot, and enjoy the chaos. <<less

f*cking hell this is beautiful. I didn't really like the beginning and the title made me think that it would be a brain dead wish fulfillment but nope, it was f*cking beautiful.

My blood is literally boiling right now from the hype this gave me. And the MC actually has a personality! Who would have thought?

Just a piece of advice, just power through the beginning. As I said, I didn't really like it at first, but I powered through and look at what I got: a hot-blooded piece of art that... more>> made me stay up at night to finish it even though I have school tomorrow.

Power through the beginning with, as the MC might say, 'guts and spirit'. Do that, and you may get a really good story at the very least.

Well, it's better if you donyhave weird expectations though. That never works out. <<less

If you like bofuri you're gonna like this. This novel is that but instead of going all in on defense and shields. The MC goes for luck, bows, and summoner class, which is "The worst character combination" to the player base. If you read this your gonna have to put up with a determined person ready to do whatever he can to keep using his combination.

Overall, I am loving the novel so far and I hope it continues to be as great as it has been so far.

This novel is basically the reason I don't auto-skip novels of the "everyone thought it was the worst but it was the best" type.

I read it 2 years ago on syosetsu before it went on hiatus and never knew it came back and got finished, so my memory might be beautified, but the most important thing is that the novel never took itself seriously even though the characters were very serious and hot-blooded. I normally dislike misunderstandings but the main character only looks like a girl in-game and often forgets... more>> that fact, so I can enjoy the hijinks instead of facepalming at the s*upidity. There's some s*upidity too but I've played enough MMOs that I'd be more surprised if more than a handful of players were smart.

Like any comedy YMMV, but this was memorable in a good way for me. <<less

Started off pretty well, but then it starts going downhill. The MC becomes extremely op a bit too fast, which was funny, but then
Spoiler

he gets nerfed into oblivion and completely changes play-styles

The shipping also feels weird and uncomfortable, because the op identifies as a guy, and is constantly shipped with guys who are into girls.

This novel takes several overdone tropes and injects a healthy dose of chaos and humor into them, turning what could have been just another copy/paste generic slog of unoriginal ideas into a genuinely enjoyable read that frankly handles some of those ideas better than their origins. It doesn't take itself too seriously, but at the same time it avoids devolving into a boring novel that's all fluff and no substance. This is the best read I've had in a while, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for something... more>> lighthearted and fun. <<less

This is actually a really comedic novel. The basis of it being circumstantially out of the norm and the happy go lucky attitude that the MC embodies does wonders for the story. I would not say this is extremely good but its not terribad either. The only reason im not giving this a 5/5 is that I'm worried about the inevitable crash that the story may go through later on. Of course im hoping it does not crash and continue to perform well but thats all I can hope for... more>> really. <<less

This was surprisingly fun. I made an account just for this review. It was a nice adventure-comedy that didn't take itself too seriously. Several scenes I couldn't help but laugh. Especially the first tournament - it went better than I could have expected.

The main character is smart enough, but also quite oblivious. But that is part of the charm in my opinion. Sort of reminds me of Saitama from OPM.

Obviously the protagonist is OP, but by the end they no longer have an overwhelming advantage. Others players counter them. Devs... more>> nerf the build. And so on. Yuuri constantly has to improvise and find new ways to come out on top. Yuuri is always on the backfoot to some degree, but that is how he likes it in the end.

There is also a fun dichotomy of Yuuri having a very beautiful female character in-game, while also being very pretty in real life as well. And yet, his personality is very manly, hot-blooded, and full of guts. Just like how he thinks of himself as the hero, even as he talks about slaughtering his enemies. It is very entertaining to read, especially the reactions of others.

I also very much enjoyed the "interludes" of other players talking on a message board. The game mechanics themselves may not be quite as well designed, it did feel a lot like an actual MMORPG. And the message board went a long way to help with that.

If I had any main criticism, it would be that the ending was a bit rushed and was basically
Spoiler

"and so, Yuuri ans his friends continued to have fun in the game for ages to come."

[collapse]

(Although, there was
Spoiler

one exception for the epilogue, where the final boss becomes Yuuri's teacher irl to terrify/get closer to him.

[collapse]
And that helped make for a much more satisfying ending.)

NOTE: Some other reviews complained about yaoi/shounen-ai vibes. While I person enjoy that sort of stuff (alongside yuri/shoujo-ai), it really isn't a thing here. Or rather, there is sort of shounen-ai vibes, but it is played for laughs. It isn't taken seriously.
Spoiler

Yuuri and his main rival have "manly" interactions that gets misinterpreted as romantic by others. But Yuuri isn't interested in his rival, and his rival (Baldhead) is one of the few that knows he is really a guy. Basically, it is nothing more than a bromance. They're just bros lol.

[collapse]
The people that quit from "yaoi" vibes are just too sensitive imo. Especially since, by the end, there is a far stronger implication that the primary love interest is a woman. <<less

Remarkably well done seemingly satirical take on MMORPG fantasy everything, with no compromises for common sense or other such unnecesary blather. The story hasn't fallen apart or veered from its initial intention, and it seems there's only 4 chapters left so well done author/translators!

It was ok and interesting, though MC got rich and OP way too fast.

Game system is not really explained well for me like how do players learn skill, is there a limit to learning skills, is there a skill slot? why not just learn all passive skills then, damage calculations is also out of the question (well not really important for pvp but boss battles).

Also I don't really mind the gender bender BUT the only route I accept is shoujo ai/yuri route. No offense but I don't like shounen ai/yaoi.... more>> And this novel is giving large yaoi vibes so I'm out I could ignore it to some extent but when MC is talking about loving a baldheaded dude very much... yeah I'm out. Take note MC is 100% male in real life no matter the game character is female MC is still male. <<less

Look, the only thing that kept me what the "yankee" talk and I can only handle so much shounen-ai themes before I give up on a work. Blatantly ignoring the fact that if the MC can get op why can't experienced gamers/minmaxers? You can't tell me there aren't hardcore vr-soulslike player that aren't in that game.... but I digress, I hate the lack of diversity. ... more>>

Tell me what this novel has used for the MC that wasn't possessed weapons, a few bosses, a giant boss, a replica of a great old one, the chimeras, and the MC's fists

All in all, this work was mediocre at best <<less

This story is clearly a superior and different version of Bofuri.

There are so many similarities that I would slap someone if they told me the stories have nothing to do with each other. I wonder if the author of Bofuri has read this story and resents seeing the same idea executed much better by another author. XD

This story has great action (better than Bofuri), characters with very loose screws (more interesting than Bofuri), and it's funnier (harder hitting jokes and more mature than Bofuri). Unlike Bofuri, it is not sickeningly... more>> cutesy and the plot and character goals are clear. Guts and fighting spirit! Down with the developers!

This hot-blooded story has me pumped up for more curb stomping, fist throwing, and sadism. Violence that makes me laugh abounds. <<less

Everything is just what I expected from this kind of title. There's the back and forth IRL and VR, there's the beginner's luck, there's misunderstanding, there's OP MC, there are other OP players, there's mechanic exploit.

I couldn't give a perfect 5 stars because there are, unfortunately, inconsistencies in how author build the (game) world. MC got nerfed understandably due to her exploit, then found a way to make the nerf her another absurd OP skill usage, and there's the inconsistency I found. Some of her skills slightly brush off author's... more>> own world building and it's kind of a stuff anyone would miss after a series of very exciting events. Now whether it's the author's slight mistake or mistranslation I have no idea but that's what my impression that made this review lost one star.

Still a terrific fun novel to read tho. <<less
