Insectoids: The Job of the Males

Description

After three days of working nonstop, Cheng Zhaoci has transmigrated (read: had a stroke) as is everyone’s wish.

What does it feel like to transmigrate into a male, the rarer s*x of the insectoid race?

Cheng Zhaoci would reply, ‘yeah never mind that, there is still work that is my job to do.’

One day, the internet of the insectoids that had a sore lack of entertainment media suddenly featured a new account that had short serial comics. The comics had sweet love, passionate fighting, and all sorts of imaginative stories. Many fans flock to follow this account. Of course, many shemales were sceptical of the 1-to-1 monogamous love depicted in those comics.

Later, when Wing Commander Wei Zhuo was deep behind enemy lines, his xiongzhu, the Wing Commander Cheng Zhaoci came to rescue him without hesitation. That is when the shemales realised – there certainly can be sweet, sweet, love. It just doesn’t belong to them.

The shemales only want to smile and wave them away.

Hello, it's the translator here. This is a novel featuring a subgenre commonly MTL'ed as 'Zerg' (massive misnomer, by the way), but I believe this genre has never been appropriately translated onto NU (at least as far as Google would tell me), so I've decided to test the waters with this one. You might find the setting contrived, and it is. It's basically Omegaverse++. Feel free to give it a try if you're still interested so far.

Storywise, it's basically a fluffy slice of life story with some glimpses into an... more>> alien society. There are effective moments, but admittedly neither the male lead nor the protagonist develop very much (the protagonist especially). So if you're simply looking for something that could bring a smile to your face and not going to bring ruin to your brain cells, I would heartily recommend this novel to you, since it is one I found myself returning to every now and then if I needed something light to pass the day.

Edit: By the way, there is an explainer of the novel and the Insectoid setting in general in Chapter 0, which is not linked here on NU as it is not part of the main novel. If you find yourself confused by whatever xiongzhu and cijun are, they are explained there. <<less

Somewhere between 3 and 4, I guess.

The thing about this novel is that it feels weirdly indecisive. It's essentially like omegaverse stories that want to look at how the messed up power dynamics of the contrived p*rn setting would have a negative impact on the people who have to live there, so it spends a lot of time discussing the issues of the zerg/insectoid society. But at the same time, you can see the other reviews say that this is very light faire. So there's stuff like female zerg being... more>> tortured to death repeatedly and their killers getting off entirely without reprisal from the legal system, pirates then doing the same to a male, a war going on... but it's all in the background and just mentioned as happening to characters we haven't even met, while the main cast just kind of navel-gaze about it.

It also doesn't help that there is repeated mention of secondary characters how, actually, many males don't share the ultra-privileged perspective and see the issues in society, and how even the highest echelons of the government want to change things, but for some mysterious reason, the whole torture female to death for fun without any legal reprisal stuff has been gong on for generations and has enough surviving victims that they can form a military force strong enough to drag out an entire war.

I didn't finish the novel, so I don't know how the explain the mystery of how the previous, recurring uprisings were put down, but it just feels increasingly contrived that the novel both spends so much time discussing how these issues exist but also how they're not happening to the main cast and also how their correct moral perspective is shared by practically everyone they meet. It's wanting to have depth but also refusing to actually take the plunge.

I know it sounds ridiculous to discuss all this for a rather mid romance novel in this kind of p*rn setting, but I'm not joking when I say the authors brings it up constantly. That said, it's a reasonably competent story, and I imagine others wouldn't have the issues I do. <<less

4 stars!

I liked the MC and his friends and the setting was interesting enough. As the translator stated, it's a fluffy story without major conflicts and I'm all for it when the mood strikes. In fact, I really like MC and his attitude towards his profession (a cartoonist), and even the stories he creates are interesting.

The people he meet are an interesting bunch, from his adopted brothers (who are "females") and the other males he meet, their interactions are amusing to read.

The only downside to the story for me is... more>> the romance:
Spoiler

perhaps I didn't read it properly because towards the middle I was reading a little faster. However, as 2 individuals with vastly different backgrounds, age, interests and lack of interaction, I just couldn't find the romance believable. It was like MC suddenly felt that ML was worth pursuing and went all in. ML did have superficial feelings for MC at the beginning but I think all the "females" did. There just wasn't enough chemistry. MC interacted with everyone else way more than ML before this sudden trigger (or the build up itself wasn't convincing).

[collapse]

Otherwise, it is a stress-free read if one is looking for something simple and feel good. <<less

I liked it.

It brought out a different side to Zerg novels.

Honestly I cried reading about what happened to some male zergs.

I felt sad for both sides. Both male and female (shemale) zergs.

I liked how the MC was decisive and proactive.

The romance developed too fast once it started though.

It didn't feel real enough tbh.

But it was still a good novel.

Had a good plot.

Tbh, I'm more invested with the stories MC write than his development with ML because it's too bland and sudden - I don't sense any spark at all. Their zerg world's viewpoint seems to grow more and better than themselves lol.

I've never read one from the insectoids (Zergs in other interstellar novels) perspective before and really hooked me. I highly recommend it. The translation is really good and the MC works hard for him and all the ones he cares about. Loving the story so far 10/10.

It's been a while since I've liked a story this much. It was good for someone like me bcz while I like lighthearted stories, them being too lighthearted can make it boring really fast. So this story had the right amount of sweetness with our cut main couple and a little sadness with the whole Male -shemale situation. I liked that it was shown that not all males were bad unlike what it seemed like at first. There were good and bad both just like Shemales.

Though at the end I... more>> really disliked the pirates and what they did. No matter what happened to them I couldn't sympathize due to what they did to innocent males. Reading about the male who developed stockholders Syndrome was so heart breaking.

I also really liked the main couple. I like reading different dynamics instead of the usual Cold ML and Sweet MC thing. So, the Shou being big and bulky while the Gong being petite and more feminine was really sweet. Especially when Wei Zhuo acted shy when it was so against his character.

I honestly don't get why I didn't find this story before bcz while it's not as good as MDZS it is not bad either. It's actually really good. <<less

Mostly writing this as a counterpoint to Kyogre's points about how the story seemed too light and the protags too distant from the horror gently but starkly depicted in an around the rest of the plot. I half want to nitpick their not finishing the story yet complaining that they didn't understand why the males and females were going through such an awful tug of war when the author did explain it. Flatly, imo, but with way more grace and realism than I see in these types of novels.

For anyone... more>> wanting spoilers:

Spoiler

rebellions are not new to Zerg society at all. In fact the current twisted order came about because an S tier male rebelled so hard against his then-female oppressors using the magic of being genetically predisposed to rapid innovation in war technology that he turned it all upside down in the worst way possible. Female-led Zerg rebellions founder because males make + innovate most of their technology in this universe, so even if the rebels fought their way to the top, all it'd take was an S-tier male surviving long enough to flip the script again.

Obviously you can also imagine hellish dystopias where females extract tech advances from males while keeping them under heel via brainwashing and strict laws, but it'd be a society just as precarious as the one depicted in this story, especially if you also add in external aggression from any other race wily enough to exploit those natural gender fault lines.

[collapse]

Anyway my verdict for this novel was that I loved it; it was light yet satisfying, and its lows and sad points made it feel complete. I especially liked that the MC got to be special and famous all over with his own damn learned-by-himself skills, and that even though he managed to
Spoiler

make some changes in society, it wasn't all attributed to his skill or beauty or whatnot; the efforts of many other people were acknowledged, as was the fact that his comics came along at just the right time, socially speaking. There's some obvious suspension of disbelief involved wrt the barrenness of Zerg entertainment media, but I feel like this is the one story I can decisively handwave that for because the MC's success felt earned enough for me.

[collapse]

Okay I also especially liked that the author managed to have a bunch of 'social media reaction' comments without even once making me want to eyeroll myself to death. Imagine that, a novel where they're not just another vehicle for singing MC/ML praises or doing another round of bland face slapping...!

Last comment for real this time, GOSH I liked the main couple so much, even though they were a fairly standard 'love/lust at first sight' type, though not in an off putting way for me. And I also liked the way the author handled side characters and their own pairings (or lack thereof) ; it's funny, for a novel filled with many people lamenting not having a partner, it managed to do so in a really chill and relaxed manner, as well resist the urge to pair everyone off, have miraculous love 'fix' anyone, etc. And now I have to stop because I can seriously imagine spouting another whole paragraph or two about why this was so good. <<less

Cute and easy to read story. At first I wasn't interested in the subject of comics and thought I'd find the novel boring. I gave it a chance since I prefer novels from the seme's point of view and am glad I gave it a go.

The intro isn't completely correct, MC, Cheng Zhaoci, does fly a mecha but never joins the military. ML, Wei Zhuo, is a member of the military though. Also, the intro mentions transmigration but I think reincarnation is a better fit for two reasons. First, there... more>> is no known story that MC went into... it's more that he entered into another world. Second, MC gained awareness while he was a baby... it didn't seem as if he took over someone else's body.

The novel does have some depictions of torture but it does not involve MC and ML.

Spoiler

MC was born to his shemale dad on a landfill planet. When he was 16, he was kidnapped but saved by ML. MC is a rare male, so he and his loved ones were brought back to the Capital Planet. Before this, MC had released a small comic that was well received.

MC was a minor and ML was a 25 year old shemale. The relationship between the two was more like ML was protecting MC because he was a male. As time went on, they began to have feelings for each other.

Throughout the novel, there would be descriptions of the unfairness of the treatment of shemales and demis by males of the species. This led to males being kidnapped and abused by pirates (made up of shemales and demis).

MC becomes an extremely popular comic who helps change the current toxic situation of the genders.

Not bad, haven’t read this type of story before. There’s alot funny scenes but also alot of sad stories) from MC comics. This world seem a bit like ABO but much crueler setting. The gender discrimination I guess happened everywhere. Those aside it’s a good read. I don’t know how to describe this whole story as there’s alot of funny, wholesome moments but also alot bloody dramas, abuses background despicted. But it’s also seem like a light read. Lol. Anyway I really enjoyed the novel. Thank you

Because of the cover, I thought this novel will be somehow gore and stuff (I first thought that the paint in MC’s face is blood/injury lol)

Anyhoo, this is a feel good novel that occasionally makes me unconsciously smile, laugh and feel warm hihi

Would definitely come back and finish this once the translation has been completed 💖

Look unique, the plot is good.

Just I keep imagining shemale as female with larger built. Everything they do make me think they are woman that thinking male are useless and must be protected.

So im not feels any BL here.

The story is good, the MC has a pretty funny personality, it's very pleasant to read, it's just that it was very annoying how the author tried to whitewash the leaders of the space pirates, Jin Jue and Sun Wushen, but without deciding to do it Everything, they want to justify their actions by saying that they are crazy, that it is the fault of whoever drove them crazy, etc. but he also says that being crazy is no excuse for everything they did, so what is he trying to... more>> achieve with all that? Not even he knows it himself, he wants to be deep and delve into the topic of how a bad system produces a monster, but it is not deep enough, in fact it does not even describe the system bad enough, since he MC was able to change it with just subtleties. things, there were even many, many men in Parliament who had already begun to change the system, it was not the cruel and irremediable world that they want to imply, the type of world that would be needed to generate that type of rotten people, so The behavior of the pirates is not really explained, and no! Saying they are crazy is not an explanation! In fact the author dedicated much more to describing the atrocities of the pirates graphically than to trying to make the reader see why they are like that, I don't know if he thought that the reader would associate that with the amount of damage they received in the past and thus completing the part of the story that he did not write, but it is not like that... from my point of view the pirates were simply ridiculous! In their actions, attacking random people instead of directly looking for the people who hurt them? In fact, there was no guarantee that the people who hurt them were among those kidnapped, so their revenge may never have been fulfilled., the author tries to fix this by saying that they are taking revenge on the entire society not just one, but they never really do anything to change the entire society, or even try to take control of the government, so what?? What was that all about? absolutely nothing!!! the same author says it before Sun Wushe's death, quote, "it's just a crazy revenge against a cruel world" but what cruel world?? Which one? There was no cruel world in history, only some cruel people, the majority of men worked secretly for the good of all people, including transsexuals.... In short, the author wants to delve into an evil and soulless world but it can't because the MC would be useless in that world and couldn't change it so easily, so we have this mixture of a novel, between light and heavy that can't quite decide on one or the other... I guess he tried to keep the MC from being so OP so as not to fall into clichés or he simply identified with him as a writer so he didn't want to change his profession... who knows... Still, overall, the novel is good, the comic plots are creative, and the characters are fun, skip or skim the graphic descriptions of pirate torture, don't pay too much attention, and you will have a novel that could reread. <<less

Normally would rate 4, translation is awesomesauce, raises it to 5.

This novel is truly a fun read. It has a lot of excitement, great pacing, and is an overall positive/fluffy tale focusing on the MC's growth from childhood to adulthood in a super skewed society.

It manages to balance just the right touch of social change/ethics/drama/oppression with humor and lightheartedness.

The majority of the novel is focused on the MC's love for comic drawing, and through which he tells his own stories (which I super enjoyed reading and even teared up once... more>> or twice from the MC's comic plots). He isn't a hero who tries to save the world, just a creator who wanted to provide people entertainment and used art as a medium for some of his thoughts.

I really enjoyed the way the author was able to balance that transmigration / main-character vibe, with a "your average guy" vibe.

I had a lot of fun throughout the story! And I do agree that some of the weakness was in the romance (an irony since the MC self-proclaimed to be bad at crafting romance in his comics too), but the rest of the plot more than made up for the romantic subplot in my opinion... <<less

Reread twice and it's basically a story of societal change for the better by showing the importance of stories. The MC is very down to earth and easy to understand, the cast and 'villains' also have good motivations and are properly fleshed out. The supporting cast extremely important to the story and the world building tries to explore extremely complex social problems without dumbing it down too much or becoming too bogged down because of tackling too many issues. My reread did make me realize that a flaw is that... more>> the MC and therefore the readers never directly come into conflict with the cruel 'males'. All the incidents about their horrible acts are second hand, and while the MC is extremely worried and his dad and upbringing was harmed due to a 'male', the MC at no point directly talks to one of those scum 'males'. This doesn't mean that the story excuses the actions of either party, but it is definitely odd that despite the extreme cruel authority of the 'males' in Insectoid society, the MC only comes in contact with 'good males'. Overall this is an interesting fun humorous novel, and while it may seem idealistic in many aspects, it's still a feel good novel and does leave the reader with hope of a better life and society. <<less

Best Interstellar or Sci-fi world with insectoid/zerg settings, like it's a nice romance, good flow of story, understanable world building and even the antagonist are not super good on inside or without mind, and the conflict is not resolved single-handed and there is actually a war that TAKES time, and it's not a hard read, favorite

My personal rating would probably be around 3-3.5 stars mainly because of how the story ended.

The way the story came to a close was disconcerting for me. Like why even add all the build up and deep insights on the extreme patriarchal and rotten power dynamics but brush over it with romance as if the previous cruelties depicted were just a background board with not much significance at all?

The way the two main antagonists ended without shedding more light to their characterizations other than slapping them with the labels of... more>> insanity and rotten while MC just magically assumes that ML would still end up good even without him just baffles me. The reasoning of how the two half-brothers were different hence why they would end up differently is plainly not enough a reason to come to that conclusion at all.. It's like all those tragedies and plots behind all served foil to their romance without thought.

Asides from that, the thought processes and focus of some of the characters at certain points in time are just highly out of place and out of the blue. Instead of placing focus on the victims of tragedy and the situation at those points of time, the author suddenly drags the readers back from that perspective and just stuff them back on the front seat to some dog food as if that would solve all other problems. It felt as if something smelly was placed in front of you and you were urged to eat some sweet candy while smelling that disgusting stuff and you can't just swallow the candy at all. Things just didn't fit at all.

Note: This reminded me of the second arc of the novel 'On the Thousand Postures Reconstructed by the Scumbags, ' same premise in that there is an extreme imbalance in power with an uprising that is about to occur. However, the author was able to accurately balance the bitterness and romance there while it was handled here in such a way that they didn't just fit. No hate though. <<less

So lucky to have chanced upon this title--- I devoured it in 2 days!

The translation, the writing, the characters --- all wonderful! This is probably the 3rd or 4th Zerg story I have read and they just keep getting better.

This is a must read!

I loved it!

Been looking for a zerg-like story and this one is very well written and engaging compared to others.

I would say the romance between MC and ML in this one is more like a subplot. But I found it sweet and adorable. The main focus seems to be a fight for gender equality in a society with a strict hierarchy. Which seems to be a reoccurring theme in ger/zerg/omegaverse stories.

... more>> The characters are well developed. They didn't feel 2d or forced to me.

I really liked the comic stories our main character came up with and the influence it had on the character development on the rest.

Would read it again. <<less
