If she had to marry, she wanted to marry a normal man and live a quiet life.
However, the man she was to marry by imperial decree was the exact opposite.

The man who was holding down the borders of the nation, Chief Commander Lee Heon.

To him, MoonWon was the daughter of his enemy.
However, if she did not marry him, she would lose everything she was trying to protect.

“If you’d only marry me, I’ll live as if I’m dead.”
“…All you’re going to do is breathe?”

And like that, she got married in order to survive.
However…

“You won’t be able to move with legs like that. Get on my back.”
“I received an imperial order to attend a banquet taking place at the Imperial Palace. Do you want to go with me?”

The way he treated her was very subtle.
However, her heart was strangely racing inside her chest.

Summary: As the daughter of a fallen noble family, MoonWon always did her best. After her family collapsed in shame and humiliation, she did her best to keep them afloat and alive. However, she is soon thrust onto the political chessboard as a pawn. An imperial decree orders her to marry Chief Commander Heon, the son of the Emperor's beloved consort. As she is swept up into the political intrigues that rock the nation, MoonWon decides to grit her teeth and make the most of it.

As the son of a... more>> woman who abandoned her family to enter the arms of the Emperor, all Heon can think about is revenge. In his eyes, all women are cutthroat monsters who only know how to manipulate others to get what they want. Therefore, when he is ordered to marry the daughter of the very woman who helped his mother gain the Emperor's favor, he has no thought of heeding the decree. But there is something about MoonWon that sparks his interest.

As the world turns against them and their marriage, Heon and MoonWon do their best to weather the storm. However, what cannot be will not be. Will this star-crossed couple find their happiness? Or will fate ultimately tear them apart?

Warning: Depictions of verbal and emotional abuse. Dubious consent. Graphic descriptions of violence.

Review: This was a long read. The first half was relatively fast compared to the second. Both the male and female lead can be quite stubborn! However, if you enjoy seeing the male lead grovel for forgiveness and affection, this may scratch that itch. It truly does feel like everyone is on a mission to tear the couple apart, and at times, their obstacles seem quite daunting. However, there are pockets of sweetness sprinkled throughout the novel that redeem the heavy, convoluted plot.

The leads slowly learn how to communicate with each other, but once they click, they're on the same page. The male lead is your typical historical army general. Little to no words, not very good at expressing himself, and very distrustful of others. However, once he falls in love, he loves with everything he's got. The female lead is a lot more hesitant, but she compliments the male lead very well and is suitable to be the wife of a chief commander. Overall, I enjoyed this novel. I'm not sure if it will be everyone's cup of tea, but I think that those who like novels like this will really love it. For others, it might be best to just pass on this one. <<less

Okay, so its still pretty early on in the novel, but I think I've read enough.

I totally get that the ML had a horrendous childhood, but I just can't stomach his apathy towards the fl. Throughout the first few chapters, he neglects and leaves her to endure the abuse from his mother and her attendants for months. And whenever they DO interact with each other, he's so unnecessarily aggressive, condescending, and just plain abusive. I'm frankly shocked that the FL wished to become closer to him, when all he's shown... more>> were tiny moments of bare minimum kindness. I feel absolutely disappointed and disgusted.

I quite liked the fl, but the way the ML treated her was just too unbearable for me. <<less

This was a very long novel, and one of the more well written ones, until the later chapters. The FL and ML are very stubborn. At first, their persistency was cute and the back and forth angst-fluffy moments were well written and fit their characters. However, without spoilers, the story becomes a repetition of the first half, which was really frustrating because it had such a great start with a growing plot and relationship between the FL and ML. If you're looking for an angst filled novel where FL avoids... more>> ML and basically makes him grovel 💀 then you may enjoy this. However, if you want a novel of this trope with well developed plot and character development, at least for the FL and ML, then I'd suggest reading something else.

Here are spoilers of the second half basically:
Spoiler

Moonwon (FL) runs away after her father's death, believing that everyone's problems will disappear along with her. Obviously, the ML continues looking for her. However, even after reuniting, Heon (ML) tries to convince Moonwon that he just needs her by his side, meanwhile the story shows that no problems have been fixed by her running away. Despite Heon trying to convince her that none of their misfortunes are her fault, she continues trying to run away until he literally sits in the rain for 3 days like she does, which for no reason finally changes her mind, other than the fact that he might kill himself if he continued. Basically a repeat of what happened to her in the first half, sitting in the rain for 3 days and waking up with him back at her side.

The story had so many other options to branch into in the later half instead of a complete repeat. While the ending was somewhat satisfying, the fact that Moonwon only decided to come to her senses after Heon was on the verge of taking his own life seemed so impulsive and insincere, considering how desperately she wanted to run away before. I think even after this, the author could have redeemed the plot by deviating just a LITTLE bit from the first half, but even Heon's recovery phase was the same as Moonwon's, except she was the one taking care of him, waiting for him to wake up.

tldr the first half is an amazing read (from ch1 to when they finally accept their feelings for each other), otherwise the relationship conflict between the ML and FL literally just repeats itself. <<less

uh. My contribution to this story will be to put in much needed trigger warnings into the tags. In fact, diving into this without there being any trigger tags was alarming. Thx translator for putting them in the novel btw.

also, 'enemies to lovers' tag had me assuming it was mutual. It wasn't. ML is not great.

you're not going to get much romance from this novel. More like abuse and manipulation. But the author tried to make it seem hot? Like ... more>>
Spoiler

in a 'oh ML so possessive, yes pls lock FL away, isolate her from her support system, 'i'd rather kill her than have anyone else have her', but in a depressing not hot way?? He doesn't really have many redeeming qualities to outweigh the massive red flags stapled to his forehead.

anyway. Romance? Not much. Political intrigue? Not that either. Suffering of women in a historical setting, and using said setting to justify the actions of the love interest? Yes. <<less

I have NO idea why people don’t like the ML. He literally is the only reason I have kept reading this story.

All the other characters are s*upid. This mary sue FL, I cant stand her. She dosen’t love ML and she keeps running away at every chance she gets. She keeps running into danger. Like what did the ML EVER do to YOU. STAY AWAY FROM HIM!!!

tr*sh story, I read the spoilers. I literally cannot understand why ppl like the FL and hate the ML. Bro did nothing and ALWAYS... more>> helped the FL. Bro was the only sane character in this whole story. <<less

This is actually a really good novel. Romance is nice, but the draw for me is that the story is well rounded, no loopholes even as they hint some things along the way. It is a tiny bit angsty but for the appropriate amount of time. It doesn't downplay the psychological trauma and questions that one would have after going through what they did. Of course there are some creative liberties and maybe a bit more dramatic in some places. But overall a good read that is not full of... more>> those unrealistic fluffy romance, but a more adult kind of love. It is a happy ending so no worries! <<less

At first I thought it was going to be the usual story of FL and ML falling in love and sorting out the world, however it is much more complex and not a sweet live story! It’s gritty and spicy and more credible than a lot of fluff you get! I really enjoyed the former Fiancé defending into madness..... Definitely more cruel than him being killed outright.
