It's quite interesting and intriguing to have characters from the opposite side of the world, form pure sincere relationship and friendship, cooperate and join hands, defeat the evil and save the world. The evil character here has quite a clever devilish master plan, it is quite a surprise when everything has been revealed in the end. The romance part does not overpower the story, subtle and smooth, giving the feel of mild sweetness and flutters.

The MC is my favorite of all time - It's also quite nice that the author... more>> didn't stuff Xie Lian/Hua Cheng through typical misunderstanding plots, and even nicer that Xie Lian... acted like he had a brain + 800 years of life experience..... (thinking of the time he came to a conclusion about who Hua Cheng was with no fuss)

The wedding scene was fluffiness at 2 millions. The Plague was extremely horrific (I honestly panicked every time I had an itch for over a week) The side characters are adorable. This is right there at the top of my all time favourites. <<less

This is a beautiful xianxia adventure BL, with 2 gorgeous and lovable protagonists. Of course many will compare with MDZS, and everyone will have their favourites but I like both the same.
Like MDZS, at the heart of this novel is one man's utter devotion to his beloved. Hua Cheng's unwavering love and adoration for Xie Lian is heart-wrenching and endearingly sweet. This BL is the epitome of what "everlasting love" means. There is zero smut but I don't mind.
Another common theme with MDZS is sacrifice, to be more precise, the futility of sacrificing yourself for a greater good or for your ideals. Both WeiWuXian and Xie Lian are alike in this sense, and were made to suffer because of their strong principles and beliefs. Thank you MXTX for another beautiful BL that I will re-read many times.

I just love love loved this! I’m a sucker for romance and overcoming the odds to stay committed and loyal to your most beloved so this got me hooked from the beginning! As with the other novels by the author I love how the world in this story was weaved together!

Phew I've slowly read through the two earlier series by MXTX and just finished reading this one. This series is amazing and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Similarly to MDZS, the flashbacks are important and gives the story depth. What I really appreciate is that the author separated the flashbacks into individual volumes (Book 2 and 4) so it doesn't cut in abruptly to the original timeline.

Main characters

Spoiler

Xie Lian (MC) is a prince and ascended to a god but was banished to the mortal realm (later ascended again). He have an easy-going personality and doesn't let little things bother him because he have lived for so long and been through so much. He is really strong even with restrictions on his power and smart as well. Hua Cheng (ML) is a one of the 4 supreme ghost king. He is solely there for XL and doesn't seem to bother much about others. HC and XL met pretty early on in the series and later stuck together since. I love their dynamic.

  1. HC doesn't stop XL from doing anything and just stay by his side to help and protect him. He isn't possessive but just very protective. He can't stand seeing XL get hurt. XL is pretty careless with himself because he have high tolerance for pain and a strong body so he'll rather get he get hurt. This is where HC is prefect because he will prevent the situation from going in that direction and stop him.
  2. Also, XL feel in love with HC even before he knew/remember who HC really is. Not the fact that HC is the ghost king, but how they have already encountered each other way before XL's first ascend. It shows that XL feel in love with HC because of who he is and not just because HC waited very long for him. The flashbacks show how deep HC's love and devotion for XL is.

I think all MXTX couples compliment each other very well and I really love the couple in this series as! HC who is baby smooth together with XL who doesn't have much experience with romance. 10/10

Side characters

Spoiler

Oh boy this is where I am a little disappointed. I don't feel love for any of the side characters maybe except the Lord Wind Master but that's all. I think that side characters play a huge part in making the story feel full. It is a little sad because the story is really good and the chemistry the main couple have is amazing. Just that there isn't any other characters that I really like aside from the MC and ML.

Plot

Spoiler

The first book is introducing the MC and ML, how they first meet and their missions together. Little details have already been added here and there and will slowly unravel in the end. Book 2 and 4 are flashbacks and boy oh boy do they stab you in the heart. The final book is where they wrap things up and also where a lot of info is dumped to you. Got kinda overwhelmed with all that but it's still ok. You can say that the arc gets longer and longer as the story goes. I also like how the story brings the MC and ML together amidst all the seriousness and give you some fluffy moments. The interactions doesn't feel forced and it sweet how both have absolute trust in one and other. There are also some pretty funny moments!

Although I did feel like some little things have been left unanswered and was a little unsatisfied, the ending is still concluded really well. There are still extras of their lives together after all that and it's really cute so no complains.

[collapse]

Overall, this is a really good read and I highly recommend it. It have great plot + fluff + angst + amazing main characters! I wouldn't say that it is overrated because it was enjoyable read and it also managed to bring out feels from the reader. There is no need to compare which series by MXTX is better because all is different, be it the plot or the characters. That being said, go and give it try! <<less

another gem. The MC has been through so much and the chemistry with the ML is amazing. This is another story where the past and present intertwine to give the reader a larger picture. It's well written and thoughtful, though I'm sure I lost a lot trying to MTL it (I even used 2 sources simultaneously instead of just the usual one). I'll certainly be rereading if/when it's completely translated.

I might have to give up on this one. It's just so underwhelming, boring and at times really cringe.

The translation makes it worse, but really the pacing and the under-developed characters are what makes this book a slog.

I've been trying to read this for a while since I loved SVSSS (one of my all-time favorite novels) and enjoyed MDZS (not a favorite, but it's a solid epic fantasy with compelling characters and plot). TGCF on the other hand... I've really tried, but every time I read a part that's fairly... more>> interesting and with the promise of future intrigue to come, the author cuts to Xie Lian going on random monster-fighting adventures (and the monsters become more bland and s*upid the further into the story I got) with Hua Cheng either tagging along (because he has nothing better to do, or just needs to cling to his precious 'Gege') or swooping in at the last minute to save XL from trouble.

Every time there's an interesting side character, the story cuts away from them. Like, what's the deal with Qi Rong, how did he become a ghost king when he was XL's bratty underage cousin? Does XL not even care to find out when they haven't seen each other in 800 years? Even though Qi Rong is his last existing relative? And why did no one back then question why Qi Rong continuously acted like he was mentally ill? Why is he treated like a comic relief and just a basic villain (who is surprisingly weak considering he's a ghost king) ?

XL and HC have been criticized a lot by other readers, and while I mostly agree with the criticism, I think the biggest problem is the lack of tension between them and lack of stakes. It's written like a teen romance where the 'dull' MC has this super hot, super powerful admirer who adores him so much that the reader is supposed to ignore all red flags (like the stalking, which at this point is super obvious to anyone but XL) and find his actions romantic. Instead they often just come off as cringe. Like e.g.

Spoiler

The underwater kiss. Why does an immortal being even need to breathe? It's not like he can die anyway - so why the need for giving him 'mouth-to-mouth'? It's just a s*upid plot device to create a scene where they kiss without letting them get together yet

[collapse]

Or XL sudden being super scared that HC will die, not because he's actually in harms way, but just

Spoiler

because XL loves him soo much that he has an 'oh god what if' thought even though he knows HC is already dead and can't die.

[collapse]

It's completely unwarranted and apparently just there to show the reader how much they love each other (at this point it's obvious to everyone anyway).

I think this novel is mainly popular with readers who wants a shoujo-style romance with a wish-fullfillment type ML, and the tragic parts (not that impactful because so far the tragedy the MC encounters is nothing like the common people suffers - am I supposed to feel sorry for him that his noble aspirations didn't get rewarded when he's basically just naïve, conceited and spoiled - compare that to the characters who watch their children die in front of them or the characters who get the horrifying facial disease - who has it worse?!) is just to give the illusion that this is a deep novel.

I wanted to like this novel because after SVSSS and MDZS I had a lot of respect for the author and everyone was raving about how good this book is, but it really feels like MXTX got carried away with being self-indulgent. Like she wanted to write both a sweeping, epic tragedy with serious themes, but also a cutesy romance between a somewhat clumsy but lovable 'Cinderella-type' MC and his 'Prince Charming'-type, completely idealized cool and completely OP ML.

I feel like Shen Yuan from SVSSS when trying to read this - raging that I spent time and money on something because it seemed like it would be a good story, but the author got carried away and butchered what was a promising novel.

I'll try to keep reading and see if it gets better, but after reading 3 long volumes (and being quite far into vol 4) and the story being this boring, I can confidently say TGCF is over-hyped and is a mediocre novel at best. <<less

I have not read (at least I do not remember) a more painful and sad death in a novel! Xie Lian deserves heaven without thinking.
And along with the most painful death, the greatest devotion, this real couple is too tender and beautiful, with a love capable of enduring in time and always from respect and affection ♥.
What about the antagonist? Like a goat, but let’s face it, he just wanted a hug.

You will go through the whole novel by the hand of Xie Lian, since he was a young prince until his ascension to the heavens and his subsequent fall. The beginning of the book feels like a "detective" novel, you will have to accompany His Majesty to unravel different events, and happened to know gods and demons. But as the plot progresses everything begins to become more complicated, step by step everything begins to intertwine and even friends keep an endless number of secrets.

As the author already showed in Mo Dao Zu Shi (which many of us have not yet overcome) prefers the jumps in time to the online stories so you can not skip a chapter if you really want to know what is happening.
Maybe the latter and the length of the novel will make you want to leave the book at some point, but take a break and come back later because it’s really worth it.

To put a catch to the novel, the moment fights transformers in the sky... There I leave it.

I've kinda read a lot of danmei novels and I can say that this one is the best in every aspect. It literally has everything: plot twists, romance, cool side characters with nice stories and the best part that i've noticed is that the female characters are not just treated with indiference and made useless by the autor. For example Ling Wen, Yushi Huang etc.

ML has loved MC for centuries.

Disclosure: I skipped an arc... I think it was related to MC's life while he was involved in the foreign kingdom and its politics. Up to this point, it was too painful to see more of MC's suffering and humiliation. Maybe one day I'll be go back and read it for the sake of completion but I still can't now. Author is truly gifted in making the reader become invested in the characters. <<less

Actually finished TGCF quite a lot ago, maybe around 2020? At the time I was really hooked to it. It is indeed a great masterpiece, the ansgt is truly magnificent and the pacing is pretty good. Just not my favorite danme I have read so far. Good novel, will make you think, and that, is what makes a book good or not.

I read this novel a year ago, (twice) I was surprised for the plot, it's sometimes tedious all the information the author give us.

But the premise of the novel is beautiful, Xie Lian was naive, brave and arrogant (arrogant in the way people are when they are young and powerful. He is not arrogant in the novel way, he's more like the arrogance is belong to him because he is a prince)

when I said arrogant I refer to the words from the principal villain an sweet... more>> and naive arrogance. This story is about the time changes us, where people come more mature and quiet for the time piss us. The story talk us too about karma, who always come and for ones is horrendous and terrifying for other is relief and sadness

Other thing about this novel: obsession

Obsession instead of love sometimes love instead of obsession

I mean Huo Cheng feels love and obsession, maybe feels more love and for that he prefers care and respect person he loves. He is a demon, but he is bad? I don't think so, he's more selfish than evil.

In this novel the good people are not good and bad people are not bad. Of course this is a novel and we have our villain (I mean he is a bad guy who is really a bad guy) and an exquisite villain who feels obsession and envious about our little Xie Lian. Of course also he hates him for his arrogance hihihi does count like an spoiler? I don't think so.

The plot is good and the world of the novel is incredible, is natural is emphatic, is evil, is selfish, it look likes our world. And this is other thing I find it when I was reading this novel, the reality of the characters, I can visualize them, they are being bad or good, selfish, loved, when they are sad or happy, when they feel frustrated. I love this world. And the most important thing (in my opinion like a reader hihihi)

The waiting for his God. The waiting for his soul

The waiting for the one who believe in him

The suffer, the pain, the fear and the desperation of waiting but also the love and hope. This all things together make me feel sad and happy also I hate them but I understand them. I thing this novel is a beautiful novel if you can read with the hope you can love, hate, feel sad or mad or even don't like this novel, but love the reality of the characters.

Thanks for reading one my favorite novel

Out of the 3 books this author has, I would say without a doubt, this is her best work.

I'd give a more solid review but here's a brief summary due to time constraint:
Great story pacing
Great characters

It's a definite page turner for me and the more you read, the more you get attached to the world on the novel, as well as the characters

too unreasonable but well sweet enough.

mc's character is a bit too weak in my opinion considering he's been alive for over 800 years.

Honestly I'm a bit annoyed with him, at the age of 17 being reckless makes a lot of sense but for someone who has lived in the palace since childhood for him to be too stubborn and arrogant I think it's very s*upid. At least learn how to control yourself, but after living for 800 years the characters still fall short of my expectations.

ML on the other hand... more>> is too subtle, it doesn't make sense how he fell in love for 800 years. Like shittt it's very long. I thought it was romantic at first but it's kinda spooky to have someone obsessed for 800 years lol. <<less

TGCF is great, if you are adept at skipping over tons and tons of flashbacks. I enjoyed the novel aside from that. Sometimes we would get a summary of a flashback, then the flashback, and then a final summary of the same flashback. It was a bit much.

Other than that, the main ship is simply adorable. I'm very sad they didn't get to have s*x, but what can you do?

It may have its flaws, like almost all of them, but beyond that the feelings it provoked in me were infinite happiness.

Extremely like-able characters, stunning world building, and intrinsic plot. This is my all-time favorite web novel for sure. I recommend it a lot.

I will warn you that are a lot of flashbacks which can seem tedious at different points, but they really add to story and enhance the feeling of experiencing a long journey with the main character (for better or for worse).

I hope everyone can read and enjoy this.

First Danmei I read and I loved it.

Yes, some parts were a bit slower and there were definitely some filler arcs here and there, but this novel got me attached to the numerous characters so I didn't really care that much, and actually enjoyed those little stories.

Some people say that Hua Cheng is a bit obsessive and it's more creepy than it's romantic, and I definitely get what they mean, but at the same time, Xie Lian is Hua Cheng's literal life, so I think it's kind of logical. It's... more>> actually almost at Xie Lian request that that happened. Though I don't want to get into spoilers so I'll just leave it at that.

Anyway, the world-building is great, with great plot twists that definitely keep you hooked.

Despite the 5 volumes, I read it in less than a week and it left a big impression on me, especially the characters and their backstories. I feel like the only plot hole was with He Xuan, if you know you know.

Anyway, this novel has a bit of everything: action, romance, emotional scenes but also lighthearted ones, humour... I recommend 100%. <<less
