The Regressed Demon Lord is Kind

My whole life, all I wanted was power.

I churned the world into rivers of blood and eventually gained the title, ‘Demon Lord of Strength’. However, all this became useless when I lost to a party of heroes.

But what can a loser say? As I laid dying, I was forced to listen to the hero’s gibberish:

“If you are born again, I hope that you will live a kind life!”

But huh? When I opened my eyes again, I was back in the past.

“What do I have to do to live a kind life?”

This is the beginning of an ex-Demon Lord’s journey to live a ‘kind’ life.

I have to say that I'm impressed with how thicc the personality of the MC. It's mind-blowing, yet logical.

A spread out tiny little twist is so fun to read but it changes the perspective a lot. I love how the story is laid out in the novel but with enough curtains to hype the reader. I enjoy the tempo and the detailed concept it gives. And I surely should talk about how the title is correct but from another point of view - and it is only correct if we... more>> looked at it from the MC POV. This is the first time I genuinely enjoy being enlightened by the title and expecting different results - if I have to compare it with another novel.

Oh but I am just slightly, justtt sliiiighttllyyyy disappointed by the detail which is just not making any sense. I don't really think anyone could tell this but that's just the prove how much I am invested in this novel.

I am applauding the fact that this novel has seriously considered the balance of sexuality, as they are being represented on quite the same scale. It is only fun, to see not just girls that surround the MC. Especially, thanking the writer that until now, there is no hint of Harem. NO HOLY BEAUTY! (It is my twisted concept about other art - named manhwa or novel - with their obsession with beauty and represented in the product quite heavily)

tr*sh Talk.

With the words "regression" and "demon lord" in the synopsis I expected this novel to be really generic and I didn't go in with high hopes, but it turned out pretty great and I would recommend it. (As of chapter 200) minor spoilers ahead.

The plot: The are fights for the MC to show off his OP combat abilities, but for the bulk of the story he is unravelling the plots of a mysterious organisation to turn people evil (as revenge for doing this to him), where he needs... more>> to gather information, on the who and how of their plan and sabotaging them before they succeed. They usually do this through manipulating that persons entire life until they fall into despair and then offer them a power that corrupts them to take revenge. As a reader you get the satisfaction of seeing the organisations elaborate plan destroyed, and the villain suffering.

I think what kept me reading this novel is that it has a conflict that is believable, and can be sustained even with the MC's OP future knowledge and OP power. This is because the enemy organisation also has knowledge of the future and can plausibly regress at any time, resetting everything, so the MC has to play it slow and not reveal his future knowledge. Each situation he solves feels like a step closer to solving the mysteries of the setup of the whole story.

His knowledge of the future is also made to be pretty believable. The world is pretty large and he was a wandering loner in his previous life, so for most events and people he only knows the result or doesn't know the details. He doesn't have detailed knowledge future technology or magic either.

(spoilers here)

I also like how there is one companion that isn't a pure follower and is constantly examining and challenging his actions, out of concern to try and to stop him from becoming evil again. The s*xual tension between them is also really strong.

I also like the tension between him and the main antagonist. Every time they meet, they are pretending they aren't suspicious of another while trying to ferret out some information about the other.

TLDR

In conclusion I thought it was a pretty good regression novel, it has done enough to not be extremely generic, has a main character who is assertive and sticks to his own way of doing things and delivered a OP power fantasy while still being vaguely believable. There were also at least a couple characters and relationships that were interesting. <<less

It was fun at first but it got worse later on, it was as if the author reached his INT limit.

The conflict, plotting, and resolution decreases in quality the more the story goes on. It is supposed to have an increasingly complex intrigue between the MC, nobles, and the organization as the story went, and more clues unveiled, but what we get was cheap reveals, infantile plotting by the villain, badly written 'noble politics', and a really weak face slapping (the author tried to do some high IQ political... more>> faceslap that makes no sense, it's almost like watching people playing reverse uno card, with extra step). <<less

This is a very good novel. Tbh, when I first read the title I already have prejudiced that it probably just another harem-filled, heart-warming, cringy story but goddamn I was mistaken. Won't say much about it but the likeable characters, the interesting story, and the amount of twists in it were pretty exciting. As a guy who doesn't really like Korean WN, this one just enter my top three list as one of the best wn I've ever read. Totally recommend it.

The novel starts really good! It is funny and refreshing (even though it is not really hard to tell what is going to happen). However, as of chapter 65, I have the impression that it started to get stale. I mean, I'm skimming through the chapters because they are boring and people in the comments section are predicting everything that is going to happen.

I don't know if I'll stop reading this altogether or if I'll wait for the next arc and see if THE interesting characters reappear or if new... more>> interesting people arrive.

This is really similar to tr*sh of the Count's Family, but I like TCF's side characters better. Quality translation is great as expected of Wuxiaworld. <<less

It is nice as a read, but really simple outside of the time travel thing.
It kinda reads like a manga and not a book, not many layers of complexity, but that's ok once in a while.

Loving it so far! The MC, who is a scum who trolls friend and foe alike and likes to give his enemies a false sense of hope for the sake of his own entertainment are just my type. He's a very unreliable narrator, and we're often just as shocked as the characters around him when his real strategy is revealed.

Needless to say, I disagree with the mediocre reviews posted, and think maybe they don't quite understand his character. He isn't confused about what is right or wrong. He's confused about... more>> 'good' people's prejudices when deciding who is right and wrong. The author really does like subverting common tropes, which I also love. I am a bit worried it might become stagnant in the future, but the MC is fun and the growth of the side characters around him are interesting. Even if it starts to become a little trope-y later (which remains to be seen), I'm very happy with what I've read so far. <<less

Honestly, this is a bit of an awkward novel to review and give 5 stars for me since, in truth, ihe plot is a bit weak and simple in the end, or at least without enough twist and too predictable, and characters aren't anything special as a general rule (except protagonist). World building is weak, fight scenes aren't worth talking about.

That being said, I give it 5/5 for many reasons that ultimately boils down to a single one - this novel is different.

This is a regression novel. Typically, protagonist would... more>> be ke kinda dumb and talentless and rely on countless regression to be good. Not here. Protagonist is talented and "only" regress once.

Protagonist is a fighter. That means everything is solved with fighting? Well, no. Mostly scheming and planning. Of course, he won't hesitate to use his fighting abilities, but if he can't solve a problem with his strength... he just involves someone else strong enough to help him. He never loses because he never picks fight he can't win without proper countermeasures. Well, almost never. There were at least two battles I can think of he didn't manage to expect and was mostly unprepared for.

His personality is refreshing, in many ways. First, I'm damn tired of the demon lord trope of "oh he is demon lord but actually a really nice guy". Not sure why some author want to write about demon lord but make them have saint-like personality. Fortunately, Zich is definitely a demon lord in personality. But he isn't dumb, far from it, nor is he needlessly cruel. He is also able to do what many protagonist are unable to do - proper introspection. He isn't arrogant, just confident. His tr*sh talk ability is top-tier. Perfect example of easy-going looking person who is actually a wolf in sheep clothes. All in all, he is one of the reason I enjoyed this novel.

I talked a lot about the protagonist since I really think he is a defining factor of the novel and one of the reason I say this novel feels "different", but there are other stuff that gives an original and refreshing feeling:

  • MC actually makes a party of people and adventure with them. For KR/CN novel, this is rare. Notably, companions are useful. One of them (who becomes the 2nd main character) is invaluable and considered by Zich as "the only person who could be his equal". He also trusts them and actually give them critical tasks to accomplish. Without them, Zich would have failed.
  • Everything regarding regression is explored. It's actually one of the main plot points. All in all, I would say everything concerning the regression is "different" from what I usually expect from a regression novel.
  • No harem, only one main love interest. The other ladies? Well, they will find their own prince charming (quite a few couples formed by the end of the novel).
  • No "oh we need to nerf the MC at the end of the story" bullshit. This is a weird trope with overpowered characters in some novel (especially KR) where they feel the need to take it away at the end because reasons to make the MC more human I guess? Well, not here. Instead, Zich gets a buff.
  • While the world building is weak, it is also because the author purposefully avoided extra details, including useless number for the sake of number. Technically a flaw, it also avoids plot holes.
I could go on but long enough already. Also, I focused on the good points, but this doesn't mean there aren't bad points. Some parts of the novel feels a bit too dragged out, sometimes MC gets dangerously close to overconfidence, fight scenes really miss something. <<less

I love this novel so much!! I don't know what's wrong with the people who left unfavorable reviews, but this novel rocks on so many levels!

The MC is wonderfully well written; he's full a flaws without being off-putting, and (as much as he might try to deny it) he has a conscience without being naïve or sappy. The evolution of his character over time is deeply satisfying, and his chemistry with all the other characters is fantastic. I also love the fact that the author acknowledges all of the fantasy... more>> cliches that we would expect in a novel of this sort, but still manages to put a fresh and intriguing spin on them. I saw someone write in another review that there are "better novels of the same genre" but if that's so, I've yet to come across them. This novel has been a not-stop train of good feeling since the first chapter, and I'm so excited to finish it!

Edit: don't let the locked chapters deter you! If you sign in to the host website you can still read it for free, you just won't be able to binge it all at once. Enjoy! <<less

Its fine so far but author just keeps making extremely weird and unbelievable 'plot twists' for no reason.

No, seriously, purely for the shock value, he makes characters do absolutely insane and meaningless things. Just really weird and jarring.

I very much enjoy the underlying main story, I wouldn't say it is 100% original, but it has enough interesting twists on the traditional regressed MC formula to keep you interested. I also very much like the MC's personality, he is a smartass, sadistic, but well intentioned MC. So why the low rating? Well the problem for me is everything else, all of the mini arcs are mostly dry. There is a lot of talking, the MC or bad guy narrating their master plan. The start and the climax of... more>> the mini arcs are usually decent or even good, but all the build up in the middle feels like it drags for too long, specially since it is predictable, the twists I mentioned before are for the main story, very early in the mini arcs you know who the bad guy is and you know how it will end, so the middle bits just fall flat and I have to fight hard the urge to skip. I wish the story would have tighten the mini arcs, but alas I got bored in the middle of one of them and dropped the novel somewhere between chapter 250 and 300. <<less

It was interesting up to like 200 chapters, then you can feel that everything is purposely drawn out as the capabilities of the main characters are artificially decreased. There were many situations they should've resolved quicker and fights that were unnecesarily drawn out, overall it became pretty boring and tedious. It really doesn't help when the main attraction, the main character, is dumb down at multiple parts so that the author can make the novel longer.

Its not a 5 star novel. It is a bit cringy at times and the reveals and the mini boss fights are more or less understood to be the same trope since the start of the novel (hence 4 stars, not 5). BUT. The minor villains are merely pitstops in the grand story. The story is not about the MC fighting these guys and his journey to bring about kindness and happiness. It is about the MCs own past and finding out the truth. What I like about this story... more>> is that the main villain is someone that we see often and the reader is already clued into what the main issue is but the unraveling of the story has been quite interesting to follow. We know what happens but we are finding out HOW it happens alongside the MC and that is quite the fun journey to be on. The characters have mostly all been likeable with the exception of the villain and even then he is convincing as an antagonist. The villain is easy to root against and fun to watch struggle because of the shenanigans of the MC. <<less

This doesn't have a deep plot or complex character development, but it's an entertaining read.

The MC is a selfish, violent person who time travels to his youth after being killed. He decides to live a "kind" life per the hero's words to him, but he also has a personality flaw that I call "sadistic Detective Conan." He loves to confront enemies and get them to monologue before taking them down (instead of simply offing them). Naturally, he fulfils both by seeking out bad people and ruining their plans dramatically.

There are... more>> recurring characters and a deeper plot in the background, so it stays interesting. I doubt that I will read past chapter 200 unless the plot picks up, but I'm enjoying myself so far. <<less

The novel has it's moments but seeing it's score I can only say it's over rated.

Regression is a cheat-code that can easily break the novel. What's more MC from the get go even in a weak body is already OP and there is little that can threaten him in the world. Give him 100 chapters and there is nothing that stands in his way.

It already getting rather boring by chapter 40 and the future doesn't seem bright since it seems that the MC plans to just travel around and do... more>> side-quests. His goal is to be kind... because "plot demands it"... even though he takes greater pleasure in torturing and messing with people.

I already feel like this is one of those novels in which author loves MC so much that he won't allow him to mess up even a little bit, much less suffer an actual loss and experience great failure. There wasn't a single attempt to even try to explain power scaling in this world. All we know that MC is super OP and he continues to grow more OP... not that he needs to. It's fine in story driven storyline but here there is too much focus on fighting to let it slide. <<less
