The poor aristocrat Viola suddenly received an unexpected marriage proposal from the prestigious noble household of Duke Physalis. An average noble daughter and the handsome duke. She had been confused, thinking that nothing made sense, but the duke had his own personal reasons. A political marriage with ulterior motives, both having their own circumstances. Will this path lead to happiness or sorrow?

I'd gladly recommend Dareka for those who wants to do some light reading or a temporary break from your usual fare. The characters from the servants to the heroine Viola are all entertaining and hilarious as they go from their day to day life at the mansion. Vi-chan's inner thoughts especially when accompanied with a star are comedy gold. Regarding her husband:

Spoiler

Danna-sama doesn't have much of an active role in the early chapters apart from mentions and his regular visits to the main mansion to check up on Viola. But after his mistress leaves out of her own accord, he starts getting his life together and take interest on his duties as a Duke. All thanks to Viola turning on the once empty and cold mansion into a home worth coming back to.

[collapse]

To borrow our clever Vi-chan's words... he is Extremely High Spec, but also Extremely Disappointing. Take it as you will.

There's separate stories for the sidestories that delve deeper on each reoccurring character as well as their background so even if you finished the main story itself, you have the option of reading those. <<less

I'm not even kidding when I say this. But I can't remember a single time where I was this baffled by how little reason there is for the two characters to be romantically involved.

The Duke is not a nice guy, At first, he seemed like he was. But then it's revealed that this is just a fake marriage to get other people off his back and while he has his Fake wife living by herself, He will be in a separate building with some other girl. The Duke is just... more>> not fun and as soon as he is tired of the Misstress he immediately goes to chasing the MC. I honestly feel bad for the Misstress. We have no real reason to be rooting for this parring. We've barely even seen the Duke tell out of the blue he decides to eat dinner with his fake wife. Then he tries being so concerned for the MC when I just can't help but feel it's fake. It's also kind of annoying how the story portrays the Misstress as the Evil one when she has every right to be upset.

I feel the romance is so unneeded and is what really ruined the story in the end. The structure of the story is also kind of weird. The pacing tends to be all over. We sometimes get these interesting moments but the story goes through them too fast and then we get an entire chapter talking about the MC and dresses. The first two or so chapters I was actually really intrigued.

It can also be annoying how the MC turns situations way more complicated then they need to be. The Duke mentions that she can do whatever while. So I am not entirely sure why the MC is freaking out cause the Duke might see her doing manual labor. Even at the start of the story, he didn't care for the MC. So I doubt he'd even really care.

It's just weird. A potentially fun story ruined by multiple factors. <<less

I was worried upon reading the other review (by chekanalia), but don't think this really counts as the overly humble Japanese pushover trope. Yes the MC is a bit too humble and does treat her servants as people/equals rather than as actual servants - but the MC's actions have a degree of selfishness and self-determination to them which all to many Japanese MC's lack. To elaborate

    1. She is not a pushover, and in fact forces the servants to let her do what she wants
    1. Everything she has been doing... more>> so far is purely for her own fun - even if it could make the servants uncomfortable
        1. e.g: eating with the servants was not because of humility but because she was bored
        1. Same with housework and cleaning
The best way to describe it is the MC has the soul of a handyman.

My major concern is the ML right now, and I'd honestly prefer it if he just stayed with his mistress and haven't really seen either of them do anything wrong yet. <<less

i don't want to read this anymore.... so tired of it already. had the potential to be a cute story but turned out to be kind of awful.

honestly my only problem is with the so called "male lead"... I honest to god thought that the butler was going to turn out to be the ML but I was very wrong. I don't know where it became cute to play games with womens' feelings. his initial plan to have a mistress and a trophy wife was pretty awful, and scummy of... more>> him to do.
Spoiler

then he abandons his mistress with some meaningless reason and wants to pursue the FL despite having no legitimate reason to? she made your house comfortable? does that mean it's okay to abandon a woman you've been sheltering and sacrificed your reputation for? I honestly felt bad for the "mistress" and liked her a lot -- she didn't do anything wrong in this story in my eyes. she wanted to say hello to the new wife and was turned away several times by the butler. why can't FL just come out and speak to her? FL is willing to pose as a fake wife but can't even muster up the sacks to exchange a couple of words with the mistress? then the mistress was abandoned like a used tissue by the master of the house because he got bored of her (literally no other reason than that is given.....) and then framed as an awful person because she turned down men who wanted to dance with her after she got tired. since when was it a bad thing to say no to someone? she was forced to leave the household without any compensation after being financially supported by this man who she thought was her soulmate for a long time. does he expect her to just find someplace to hire her after the life he promised to give her? he's just awful. he has no remorse or sympathy for others and thinks that he deserves the FL's love.

[collapse]

the ML is just awful. he's controlling, manipulative, lecherous, and just an all around fickle guy who really shouldn't be trusted in a relationship. the wishy washy FL has problems of her own, but the ML was just... so bland.... uninteresting..... unlikeable..... despicable.... has no personality besides being handsome. literally every single character in the story including the mob character maids had more personality than he did. don't read this unless you plan on becoming very confused and frustrated. <<less

Note: for some reason, my formatting keeps getting stripped out of this review. If it returns to being a wall of text again, my apologies.

I'm baffled by the harshness of many of the reviews to be honest. Yes, the marriage was a business relationship at the beginning, one that allowed the Duke to continue his previous illicit relationship and saved her family from ruinous debt, but he's completely upfront with it, and never treats the MC with disrespect. He also learns to be better and ... more>>

makes a public mea culpa when his feelings change.

In a veritable sea of r*pey male leads who humiliate their wives in arranged marriages that exist on this site, I'm truly surprised that THIS is the novel that people object to when the previously mentioned novels seem to get high reviews. Even before his feelings change, he's unfailingly polite, and after they do, he doesn't force himself on her, but gives her all the space she requires while hoping to change her opinion of him and their marriage.

Some people seem to find the MC irritating, but I find her quite likable, although slow to change her opinion of her own positive qualities. To be fair, it makes perfect sense. While noble, she grew up in poverty, has never really socialized, and has never been admired for her appearance. Insecurities can be deep-seated, and it would be unrealistic for her to suddenly be self-confident. She sees herself as the servant she once worked as, and therefore entirely forgettable to nobility. This is balanced by her complete confidence in the tasks she feels comfortable with, and the servants' slow and understated transformation of their mistress into a noble lady, if not a lady of leisure. The Duke's change is also suitably gradual and therefore more believable than a sudden infatuation.

The interactions with the servants are delightful and while we are only just starting to get acquainted with the Duke in a real way by chapter 44, he's showing an engaging personality when he lets down his guard and begins to grow out of his initial flaws, which were a combination of rebellion against societal expectations and the innate selfishness of a rich and spoiled young man. Personally, I think character growth is a good thing, and at his worst, he was never vile and emotionally sadistic like a huge number of male lead characters. Both the MC and the ML start with personality problems and are growing from their with the help of the much more emotionally well balanced staff. The main issue with this novel is a certain awkwardness of translation. While the meaning is always clear, the translators seem reluctant to change sentence structure and wording to something that works better in English than a more literal translation, which can lead to some peculiar sentences. Even so, the book is entertaining and never makes me want to throw my computer across the room because of rage inducing lack of consent or annoyingly manufactured angst that would be inappropriate for such a level-headed and undemanding heroine. <<less

I can’t continue to read this.. Although the MC is kinda amazing with her happy go lucky attitude.. The male lead is just a tr*sh who whines and blame other.. He also does everything based on his whims to my disgust. What a pathetic creature.

Yet another JP "Humble noble"MC. I am such a holy mother, I will eat with the servants and clean this giant mansion together with them; I will eat like a peasant since I am oh so humble. This is supposed to be our MC who is now a duchess but was also born a noble... sheesh! I would understand if it was one of those white lotus transmigrated Japanese chicks (whose IQ's are in the double digits and even the smart ones are smart only in comparison to rocks) who... more>> try to change an entire way of doing things not because its wrong but it suits them that way. The 3 stars is for the translator but this story is shite! <<less

You know, I really don't mind the setup of this story; poor noble marries a man because she needs money, rich silkpants noble marries a woman to keep his underground mistress hidden. I quite enjoyed it when they were living separate lives only connected by their give and take. And the MC's quips about him being a disappointment also make me laugh. But I absolutely can't stand the fact that ... more>>

the duke turned around and started chasing the MC once she made his house more homey. Was he looking for a mom? The way he falls in "love" with her is just odd, not slow but it just didn't make sense. First, he liked that she made his house nice to live in (like a mom or a really good maid), then all of a sudden he's jealous about other men seeing her. Where the hell does that come from? What right do you have to proclaim these feelings when 10 chapters ago, you were insulting her for seeing your beloved mistress?

[collapse]

It seems silly to put the MC and ML together because, from the start, the ML was portrayed as a guy who wasn't worth it and doesn't change as fast as his feelings do. Honestly, I would love if both of them stayed friends and the MC got with someone else. <<less

The flaw of this novel is the male lead, the Duke. He is such a disappointment.

The Duke proposed to the MC, Violet, an arrangement marriage because he already has a lover, Calendula, who is a dancer without noble blood. He is not allowed to marry her because of this so he choose Violet to be his fake wife as he move out to live with Calendula at an appointed apartment next to his house.

Violet agrees to marry him because her noble family is poor. I like her because she does... more>> not care at all about the Duke and Calendula. She just wants to live happy with the duke's servants and doing home chores. Violet doesn't even blink at the duke's handsomeness.

As I said, the Duke is the bad of this story. I didn't even care if he would show up in the next chapters. Even the mistress, Calendula is better than him. In the end she broke up with him because she sees he is such a disappointment character when he confess him feelings for Violet but she turns down him because for Violet is an fake marriage not a loved one. I understand Violet because the duke didn't try to make clear things with Celendula first, the "broke up" confession was telling at the same time when the duke was confessing his fellings for Violet.

I was hoping a new love rival would appear but it wouldn't gonna be happen because it's pretty clear she will end up with the duke <<less

The character

  1. MC: The MC in this is decent, not great but decent enough, and while her back story have been established, it isn't THAT clear and frankly, dissapointing
  2. ML: The ML in this story is the most disappointing aspect of this LN, his behavior is inconsistent and his reaction is rather lacking,
The plot: The plot of this story is your typical lower rank people married higher rank person for [Reason], and it's honestly a boring story if not for the joke made (granted the Author made the MC like a... more>> japanese person rather than a medieval person) and the great translation by the Translator <<less

The story is kind of unusual and maybe not for everyone. The ML is not exactly likable at the beginning but I find him strangely cute after he is reform (like a hopeless puppy). He is a hopeless guy, like what the FL said in the beginning, he only has good looks, wealth and careers, but he is selfish, irresponsible and like a kid.

The story is funny and light. The FL is very simple-minded. She came from a poor noble family which makes her how she is. Despite being a... more>> duchess, she prefers and enjoys life as a maid. She is not used to be in the spotlight, she used to be a wallflower and she does not mind it (to be exact, she enjoys it). The side characters are loveable. I like the interaction between the FL and all the duke's staff.

Overall, this is one of my favorites. If you are seeking romance, this might not be for you. If you like light reading and an unusual story, this might be for you. <<less

Dunno what’s with all the hate - MC is super likeable, reasonable, and down-to-earth. She’s accustomed to living as a poor noble, with minimal servants, so how is it surprising that she finds comfort in doing what’s familiar (chores/housework/manual labour) ?

Took a star off for the ML. What a turd. Stick to the agreement or eff off! Stresses out everyone because he’s a selfish brat. Ugh.

i've read up to volume 2 as of now but I don't think I'm going to continue with this for the simple reason of it's ML and MC being really annoying.

the MC was much better in the first volume though the ML was the same tr*sh but in the second one it's just... disgusting. the MC is more like a s*ave, everything she does is based on the whims of the ML, there has been not even one event that she stood her ground and simply said no.

as for the... more>> ML... I don't even want to talk about this tr*sh.

SPOILERS

true the MC did in fact do 2 things for herself in the first volume which was eating with the servants not to be lonely and doing chores to keep herself busy and having fun, both of which are out the window whenever the ML is around, she literally is a f*cking s*ave !! she absolutely can't say no to anything!! even tho based on her monologues she is not in love with the ML as of yet, maybe just a little bit of some feeling by the end of the second volume.

and again the ML is garbage, human waste, SCUM, tr*sh... you get what I'm saying no? <<less

This is unexpectedly wholesome, I have a bit of a hard time writing a proper review

The first volume sets up the setting, the "real", core story if you can call it that starts at volume 2. That's when the husband actually starts trying to win her heart.

While the story of poor noble having fun with servants doing servant things isn't new, I like the fact that this time the "villainess" is portrayed well. She's not really doing it for the money or status, she really did like the hero, and... more>> the only major problem with her is her social status, her behavior is actually quite fine. She is, as the heroine put it, a friend if only they met in a different circumstance

After that tho it reverts to the usual low noble beloved by everyone slowly learns how to be a highborn. It's not a major departure but honestly the interactions are fine. Not groundbreaking but acceptable. I think it'd be better if she's given a problem that she should overcome, but it's fine the way it is

The major point of this novel is the slow progression. Not just in relationship, but also in heroine's character.

Personalities are essentially set in stone starting from volume 2: husband is doting, everyone else loves heroine. The progression here is the heroine slowly adapting to her newfound status as a wealthy lady of a prominent house. Little by little she learns how to conduct herself befitting her station, it's a progress that in other novels usually ends within the first 2 volumes, what with how the heroine is a secret genius that knows everything and learned stuff in a timeskip. In the process she also starts to like her husband for real

And the nice thing about it, is that the progression feels natural. She started learning manners simply because she was bored out of her mind, she learned about her territory from her husband bragging about it, she learned about other aristocrats because hey they have almanac with pictures! She likes picture books!

This novel doesn't really have a major "problem" that needs solving, indeed the real "problem" is basically "I need to act befitting my station but I don't know how!" and this time there's no modern knowledge to draw from, there's no prophecy to watch out for, it really is a "slice of life" even if it's a fantasy aristocrat life

Oh! And proper communication! Starting from volume 2 the husband actively attempts to clear whatever misunderstandings the heroine has about his relationship. It's so nice to see someone notice the misunderstanding and immediately go "oh crap, I need to clear this up right now!" and actually do so!

This is no masterpiece but very much worth a shot, although the lack of major drama may be a turn off for some <<less

Well I read the other reviews and tbh if you don't like cliche plot like these then why bother reading it.

I for one absolutely adored the MC. Yes! Because obviously I relate to her in accordance with her nature against socialising! She's sort has INFP (Mediator) personality 😳. About the duke.... well it's true he was being a bit of a doofus but hey better than those Clueless Harsh Male leads who saw only his dear snake of mistress and accused the Female lead for something she didn't do. He... more>> was respectful and never really did anything to harm her. He let her be. So did she. He was in love and did something foolish which everyone does for the sake of his love! Now you'd say if he was that much in love how come fall in love with Viola again.
Spoiler

Well. He was young back then and very pressured by his responsibilities of the title he possessed. So when he found there was actually someone who disregarded that and probably thought could help him get out of it his rebellious side was fuelled. And he very much fell in love. Slowly then it turned out to habitual love as if ge made his heart to love that person and see only her. Blinded and lost. So when Viola came his eyes slowly opened to the outside world that Viola brought to him which he had deliberately tried to shut out all these years. He came to his "senses" and no doubt fell in love with it (Viola and warm world she created around herself). So? Anyone could've gone through such proceedings be in his place. Also he beforehand mentioned Viola of him loving this other girl. She had the choice to refuse. Moreover he cleared off her family debts gave her the whole mansion to live. Provided enough luxuries. I don't see why he has to be a "tr*sh"

[collapse]

Overall. I like both the leads. If u can't handle ML at first being in love with someone else other than the FL, I prefer u not reading the story. The servants, the in-laws, the little social friends overall every side characters had its charm. And the mental rant of the FL was worth reading 😂.

It's a great ln for me at least. <<less

This novel was just so so and the only reason I am giving it 3 stars is because of the FL, I like how she shows and says what she thinks in a straightforward manner. There wasn't much going on and the ML is just a really boring guy, the only thing that is good about him is that he doesn't touch the FL knowing that she clearly has no feelings for him, unlike most stories where the MLs use the unreasonable argument that since you married me it is... more>> my right to r*pe you. I don't know if a 2nd male lead is going to be introduced later but if not this will be a really boring story. <<less

Amidst my reading list which is full of struggling MCs fighting against their enemies, this piece is a wonderful oasis. It's certainly not a perfect LN, but I'm touched that the MC is so loved by the people around her. Her life is a slow slice-of-life, but she's hard working and for once, I'm not annoyed by an oblivious MC. She's not a typical pampered girl, either, so it's refreshing that people took notice of her good quality and came to adore her.
