The Mechanic

In a world controlled by a super artificial intelligence computer, persecuted male humans gather in Lost Paradise and execute their last stand. They have spent decades developing their “God Descent Plan” – to steal the North American server of the super artificial intelligence “Eden”, download it into the body of a male human “Adam”, tame and control him, and use him against the omniscient “God”.

Zhang Xun, an unmarried tech nerd, was fortunate (unfortunate?) to be in charge of the final stage of the plan – to be responsible for maintaining and taming Adam. Now he was facing a life form with a human body and a mechanical brain, a reverse version of Ghost in the Shell, and Zhang Xun’s life was plunged into confusion and chaos, and in the struggle to control or be controlled, his life became exhausting.

I have no words to express how excited I am for this read!!!

The author definitely created a scenario that I have never seen in any book. It's just surreal and each chapter makes you want more.
This is no simple romance, ladies and gentlemen:

I don't know if this is exactly a spoiler because it's already more or less explained in the summary, but... here we have the story where male people are persecuted by the Eden server (AI) for being the main cause of catastrophes in the world. Tired of all the chasing, a group of guys get together to "turn" this AI into a human being to supposedly understand that this extermination is not a good idea (it's actually more complex than that and you'll only understand better when you read).

As for the translation, I can only thank the translator for choosing this gem in science fiction form. The translator did a magnificent job
To the translator: thank you very much for the translation. You are simply amazing. Please don't give up on this romance and take care.
Anyway, just read and enjoy. <<less

After having read 莲兮莲兮's novels starting from Age of The Sirens, to Falling into the Abyss, and now The Mechanic, I feel like there's a certain formula that is used. The MCs and MLs suffer a lot (with perhaps the MC in some cases, suffering more probably because readers get most of the perspective from the MCs). There a bleakness in every world to the point it makes one wonder what the point of living is, with themes on human greed for power and resources, climate change, what it means... more>> to be human, etc. Main characters and supporting characters are all chess pieces, carrying out a plan that was set for them by something/someone else. Additionally, in the dark, depressing parts of the novels, there's rich, vividness of love that gives you a false sense that everything is going to be okay but then you get pulled through a rush of angst, so intense to the point you lose all hope for a HE for our main characters and their friends/family. The MCs are all self-sacrificing people who care for others and the world—even when the world doesn't care about them. They care so much that they will give up themselves for others/the world. There's a common theme of strained family relationships (e.g. Fathers). MCs and MLs grow up unloved and lonely and they just really want affection, understanding, and someone to accompany them to grow old. The good thing is, MCs and MLs find what they lack in each other. I really enjoyed The Mechanic and my only disappointment is that I wish we got to see more instances of their happiness together (I say this for AotS and FitA). You really feel the pull that Zhang Xun and Adam have in their relationship; it's really one where they're torn by their love for each other and their sense of their duty to the world/humanity.

"A thousand paper cranes in exchange for a chance to meet again."

Compared to the other two novels, The Mechanic is really a HE in comparison (the author acknowledges this too in their note in the final chapter). <<less

Probably the best sci-fi story that wrote about human-AI relationship.

The intense battle of belief and ideology. And I can't help to also get frustrated, heart broken, anxious, suspicious while reading the whole journey. There's no one wrong, just different ideals which resulting the contradiction.
And the writer amazingly bring out those contradiction.

Especially the battle between the human MC and AI ML. They love each other, but their ideology is crashing. They struggling with their own difficulties and it brings the angst, my heart pained. The writer wrote them beautifully, never... more>> out of character, and the plot progress is engrossingly logical. <<less

I loved this novel so much, another masterpiece by this author, depicting deep questionings of what a human is, unraveling human nature, with their emotions, thoughts, conduct. Humans most disturbing side in dichotomy with their most pure, wonderful one.

It shows the suffering of a requited yet painful love and the human determination that can move mountains and part seas even in the face of despair a desolation. A beautifully written journey that will put you through hell while feeding you hope

The world building in itself is pretty engrossing,... more>> it further develops outside the first setting in the later parts of the story.

I like how the author depicts humanity and the world, as in many other of her works, as it is decaying. It is a dystopian novel in a semi-futuristic setting which narrates a hopeless reality and explores human nature.

I feel the author's approach to the concept of individualism and humanity is pretty insightful. She criticizes human unpredictability and sometimes violent tendencies as she brings up the question: how? How can humans, who even in peaceful circumstances are restless, be happy and free?

She develops a reality where the first propose to that question was eradication in an attempt to create equality only to find out human nature cannot be judged just looking at the big picture.

She criticizes human dependency and herd-mentality, while constantly stressing the importance of individual identity and pride to be able to be considered... Human.

I like how one of the first questions Zhang Xun asks Adam is if he ever considered humans are different individuals whose personalities could not be assumed because of their circumstances, before he did what he did.

She explores the love between the main character in a way that, if in some way has already been explored, is somehow fulfilling. Dependency and possessiveness would fall short to describe it.

Love between a human and an AI, it may sound tacky and outdated, however the author approach is not. Adam's love is not the "selfless possessive love to a creature", it is his first attempt and realization to a feeling completely alien to him. One party is exploring human nature and unpredictability, learning in baby steps what feeling are like, and the other is literally having his first (romantic) love experience ever! How could (healthy) love blossom immediately in those circumstances? Had it been that way I would have in fact been disappointed with the author a bit.

The first part of the story is focused on building the world, in exploring Adam's journey as a human and Zhang Xun's dilemma towards himself and Adam's being.

It doesn't depict a desperate "I would kill, die and damn the world for you" kind of love. Zhang Xun has his goals and principles, Adam does too, once those same things differ, they... Clash. Their love is selfish and it wavers many times, they hold on to it and try to let go, they struggle to be sincere as both of them trying to convince themselves it can't be love because it can't! It would go against both's goal, indeed.

Their love is young, however, neither of them loses themselves for the sake of the other, they stay true to their beliefs, to their people and to themselves and stand for all of it even if that brings them unsurmountable pain and loss.

They are both ruthless to each other and to themselves.

As for the side characters, indeed, many don't have enough scenes at the beginning to be considered 3D, however some of them are made justice in the later stages of the book.

I specially like Zhang Xun, Pan and Enoch. Zhang Xun is smart, trying to look coolheaded as a self defense mechanism, while being infact a sensitive person. He is open minded, trying to understand what is hard for him to fully accept, he is full of imagination, determination and passion. Once something becomes his goal neither human nor machine can stop him

He is not weak-minded and panicky, even in times of despair he manages to come with solutions under pressure or at least, analyze the situation to act accordingly. He is loyal and the only thing he asks in return is for people to not betray his trust, he doesn't open easily to others and can be stern and leader-like when needed. He has a bit of a domineering personality at times that may make him seem aloof and indifferent to other, but that is his way to survive in a place like where he lives, even so, he's not abusive nor unfair.

As for the later two, they are specially endearing, in my opinion.

As for Adam he's is a pretty interesting character, one of the most wonderful parts of the story is to read his reaction to his new reality, his acceptance and conflict over human nature and everything else, however, he makes me so mad at times hahah.

Spoiler

Adam is such a loyal character, he proved me wrong in the last chapters and slapped me in the face with his deep love for Zhang Xun. He made his way into my heart from the beginning and finally rooted into it.

[collapse]

I wish we have more parts narrated from his POV.

As for other things I have to say...

Spoiler

That damn creator of Eden, couldn't he freaking use Asimov's three laws of robotics????? Was it so difficult?!? He literally doomed humanity just because the mf couldn't add to his programming that Eden was not allowed to hurt humanity, I go for the bare minimum, not allowed to kill would be nice, yk???? Did Asimov do anything to him to recent him like so?? Did the kill his family??? Ruined hid career?!? And why is humanity at fault? Couldn't he add that command??? Ahhhhhhhhhh

That's all I have to rant about

[collapse]

Having said that, I strongly recommend this novel

Spoiler

Zhang Xun and Adam's love is so *screams*, I'm so happy they got to be together in the end and they managed to start all over again, I'm glad they're finally able to be together with no worried whatsoever, I'm sad Zhang Xun didn't get to meet James again, though, but... It was still a happy ending, I'm happy for them, wish them joy and love for eternity

5/5. Recommend a read. HE.

Dystopian scifi-esque setting. The novel is fast-paced (similar to the author's other works).

The story is quite romance-heavy. Tons and tons of angst. The main couple are very endearing and cute. Maybe one of my favorite couples.

I very much enjoyed the characterizations of our MC and ML, and the pacing was great.

"A thousand paper cranes in exchange for a chance to meet again"

I loved this. The ending was so good

it was a bittersweet journey. I smiled. I laughed. I cried and be hollowed with the couple. This is my favorite novel ever.

... more>> i've never read AI novels before so unlike other people saying this has same patterns, I don't know but Definitely try this out.

I saw a post that says the romance is none because of their relationship but who are we say so?
Personally, I saw the bright, burning love. Sure, it is not expressed well or a lot but every little gestures of the couple bring out their love.

I loved the side characters so much, even the father.

Even if the writing is not the best, the focus in the novel should not be it because it's not so bad that you can't just concentrate.

TRY THIS OUT YOU WONT REGRET IT. <<less

I just want to say my review is from my own view as a female reader who is reading a novel where females are put simply 'the enemy'

I want to say though I'm really enjoying the novel itself so far, the underlying themes do make me a little uncomfortable, especially as somebody who is a low key feminist.

I do agree with a lot of the other reviews who say that a lot of suspension of belief is necessary.

Overall enjoying so far, though uncomfortable with a few of the themes but... more>> not enough to drop it. <<less

Wow I've done it. I feel utterly devastated after finishing this. Just when I feel like I've survived all the endless angst I always get slapped with ten folds of more angst. The last time I felt this much emotional torments and existential crisis to this extant was when I read little mushroom and mist.

"A thousand paper cranes in exchange for a chance to meet again."

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Very insightful especially how the author depicts humanity as a whole. MC and ML loves each other dearly but they stay true to their goals and beliefs even if it costs them their life, love and happiness. MC's so smart, he knows when to let go and to hold on, it's hard to read his inner struggles and sacrifices. I also love his father, he's in no way perfect ... more>>
Spoiler

but at the very end he did all his best to protect his son.

[collapse]

Special mention to James, Pan and Diego- they are the best buds you wanna keep! Friendship goals!

As for the romance, it is there from the start. MC's doubting ML's love eventhough he's the one who teaches him how to feel, it probably was rooted from his childhood where he doesn't get any love from his dad and those people around him.

I love ML so much and the way he wants to protect our MC, some may hate him but that's his programming goal, we really can't blame him.

The ending? Oh soooooo good!!!! That said, please give this a try just be prepared for the angst! <<less

I'm not rating it because it's too hard to be objective, everyone should just try it out for themselves.
Personal rating would be three stars.

The world building is very interesting but up until chapter 70 the whole story takes place in a single location, the rest of the world exists only through what we hear about it, which is limited to what's absolutely necessary for the plot to work.
It all seems extensive and well thought out but is actually very shallow.

For the premise, it's either based on grossly outdated... more>> concepts or the writer's personal point of view, so it makes little sense when you think about it too deeply, you have to take it "as is".

Characterisation is a mixed bag, there are a lot of side characters and none of them gets enough spotlight to become 3D, they are archetypes, stereotypes, and only there to play a specific role.
MC is okay enough to like him a bit, he's a genius that makes limited use of his abilities, quite surprising considering the situation they are in. He's helpless, clueless, and poorly prepared because the story needed drama, not because it fits the rest of his character or his environment.
ML's character is hard to write, the author did their best for sure but it falls short, his development is predictable right from the start because it has been done like that several times in other books/movies. If you aren't new the "AI becomes human" trope then you already know what's going to happen.

The romance... is a matter of opinion. For me there's none, their feelings stem from being creator and creation, that was even mentioned quite a few times, and I don't see the possibility for it to change, there just aren't enough chapters left to rectify their relationship.
It's obsession and possessiveness, not love.

For the story, it's predictable. Things happen exactly like they need to so other plot points can happen, it feels very artificial, like a clear view of the writer's outline and pre-planed beats. It's just not organic.
To me the problem probably stems from the overall topic that doesn't work well as soft-sci-fi, it's obvious that the writer has little idea how AIs work or could work, or technology in general.
You can see where the inspiration comes from but it's just that, parts copied from others without the needed awareness and understanding to really use them, it's a Frankenstein-novel made from different parts.

I don't know if I recommend it or not, it's a very generic novel that does the same things, in the same way, a Sci-fi nerd has already seen or read countless times, and likely done better.
Maybe worth a try for people that are newer to the genre. <<less

Long, complex story. It's on the serious side and makes you think about the definition of "human". MC, Zhang Xun, is a genius mechanic who is looked down upon by most human males but still works hard to save humanity. ML, Adam, is MC's greatest creation. The plot feels heavy with the constant unknown of ML's true thoughts... does he really love MC?

Overall, I like the story and believe it was a happy ending. Not the ending I anticipated but still one where it satisfies my romanticism.

Spoiler

ML does truly love MC. In the end, in order to save MC from Eden, ML split himself off from Eden. Thus they became two separate AIs.

Later, Adam was cornered and absorbed by Eden. MC agreed to load himself into a cloud consciousness. The cloud consciousness was Eden's solution to achieve his goals for humans. Through the cloud consciousness, MC was able to access Eden's core and he released a virus into Eden. It caused Eden to remain in a standby state for eternity.

200 years later, Pan (an AI that MC created) was able to "revive" Adam and sent Adam into the cloud consciousness to bring MC back. The ending showed MC and ML meeting again in the cloud.

This novel was so good. The last time I read a good futuristic novel was the defective and I thought I’d seen it all, but nope this is so beautiful and well written. I cried. Hope that convinced you to read it because it always works on me.

4.5/5 ⭐ The author never disappoints, each of theirs works are incredible and unlike nothing that ive read before. it showed me new perspective of humanity and people relationships, the complex emotions, the struggles, and everything that never crossed my mind if I didn't read their works. Starting from Age of Sirens to Falling into the Abyss (personal favourite) to this, the author never ceases to amaze me. Though you can see some repetitve theme through... more>> their works but it works magic everytime. You will fall for it and ate it up every single time, trust me, im a successful testimony.

ZhangXun my litol mew mew whom hearts traverse the whole universe and Adam my always confused but lovely AI, my heart goes to both of them. They love each other so much even through all the fights and wars but they always come back to each other up till the ending. Though the miscommunication gets me reeling everytime its understandable for everything to happened.

I wish we could get more of their happy ending but its good enough that we know they'll be together for a long long time since knowing the author's tendencies for open ending. I feel like we dont get much fluff from the cp compared to their other cps and I am absolutely deprived I want more of their relationship, the fluffs and the interaction just any crumbs. but im content with it

its fast paced, thick plot that doesnt bore you, when u think they finally get a moment of peace BAMMM another conflict arises, you cannot truly get a moment of breather reading this. its so so so great and amazing read that I wish more people read and talk about this novel rather than the same few bunch... So do not hesitate, put this in your tbr or just read it straightaway, trust me you will not regret the time you spent reading it and enjoyy <33333 <<less

It's quite nice but the science and logic is just unfathomable. Set your brain aside and I guess just accept what the author feeds you.

My mind just subconsciously rejects anything about their mechanic, how it works especially the emotional side of the AI when it was places in a human vessel. Quite weird for it to develop emotions and reflexes when it's main brain is an AI. The brain controls it so if you switch it with a mechanic brain, it's not going to have the same function as a... more>> real brain, that secretes what it needs to secrete, that's biology gone right there. The whole gender issue is also quite problematic with author's stereotyping, as there is also so much cons in an all women society where author failed to consider as both have roles to the society, therefore making the AI who just analyzed the events and not scientific and social studies to back up it's claim. I can't believe how this author came up with this, atleast give some logic behind your mechanic. Each chapter I read, my braincells die. <<less

F***!!!!!!

Damn there is only one word I could describe this novel in "Fabulous". Everything, every tiny detail about this story will let u spell bound.

It completely deserves full ratings...

Trust me I have read a lot of novels be it the straight or be it the bl consisting of almost every single genre, but this was my first time reading an AI one and I completely fell in love with it. There was a bit of AI in QWTFOD as the ML in that was also AI but... more>> it was not revealed till the end, and there was no such contradictory emotional up downs and I also never pondered muchh.

But damn this one is really amazing one, it really hit straight my heart. This one needs to be at the top of all popular bl's, ahhh! I love it ❤

Now about the story, it was a rollercoaster for me. I felt every single emotion reading it be it the pain, sadness, happiness, fear everything.

Spoiler

This story has everything, the contradictory and conflicting emotions, the truth of how the human society works and everything. The way ML and MC loved each other yet remain fixed to their certain goals, and the angst, it made my heart clench.

[collapse]

And the ML and the MC of this story were the most unique characters I have ever read, they seemed way to real to me. They really suited each other so well sniff ٩ (๑꒦ິȏ꒦ິ๑) ۶ thank god it has a happy ending....

The line though "A thousand paper cranes in exchange for a chance to meet again" ಥ_ಥಥ_ಥ

Every single character of this story is amazing and way to 3 dimensional. James, MC's father, Deigo, Pan and Enoch. Uff!!! I loved every single one of them. Pan was such a sweetheart. I read review saying Pan had a potential to be the second ML 😟, thank god he wasn't or might be bowling my eyes out how unfair it is always to second ml.

And the ending I love it, I don't think there might be anyone who would hate the ending. But it just left a everlasting taste to me, wanting to read more about it, but had no extras.. ╥﹏╥

I would strongly recommend this novel to every single person, u gonna regret it so bad, if u miss it. So dont ponder much and read it straight away.

Lastly Hats off to the author (@Lianxi Lianxi) 👏👏👏👏👏👏The amount of hard work they put into the story, damn it was amazing either they have a vast knowledge in human biology and robotics or the hardwork they put into researching every single details about the story👍, U deserve being famous. I hope one day this story be the bestselling and be made into some movie. It would be amazing.

And also thanku translators it was due to u we could successfully read such a amazing piece of work.

Plz dm me guys if u got another one as amazing as this one ಥ_ಥ <<less

I usually don't give five-stars to novels just because I'm really picky. Not gonna lie, there were times where the MC annoyed me or the descriptions bored me but not by a huge amount.

There is so. Much. Angst. The ML, Adam, is a human/robot android who is taken care of by MC. Over and over again, the ML betrays MC and redeems himself soon after. This leads to some MASSIVE trust issues where the MC can't really believe anything ML says. Near the end, even I were pretty certain ML... more>> would betray everyone again, as he is a piece of Eden, the main villain in the story. The thing is, Adam always chooses MC when it really seems to count. They are both ruthless to themselves; I thought the MC was always at a disadvantage but surprisingly he holds up well... Or well enough as anyone in his situation might've.

The plot itself is pretty predictable... In a fight between calculative robots and creative humans, you can pretty much predict how each scene will come about before it happens. Though, some reactions do sound a little illogical.

The side characters... Well, some were more fleshed out than others. I think Pan, MC's AI, would've made an amazing 2nd ML. He's lovely and he's the backbone of saving everyone. I also really liked the ML, despite all his schemes. He's surprisingly cute. MC's father is another one of my fave side characters. Though it's not all of em, there's quite a few good ones.

The ending is what I really liked. ML and MC just aren't the type of people to have that marshmallow sweet kinda love y'know? They are always saving each other (even if they're the ones that put the other in that situation in the first place). <<less

putting up a place just in case I get enough brain cells to think more deeply about what I want to say about this novel

I highly recommend this BUT as some previous reviewers have noted, suspension of much belief about science, computer programming, biology and the behavioral sciences is needed to continue, or else you might find yourself discomfited by the "facts" that drive the characters/plot.

honestly, when I started reading this I knew I was going to experience a bit of philosophical crisis (after all, it's humanity and artifical intelligence),... more>> but I didn't expect there to be as much social commentary as there was. I will not be commenting on that as I refuse to be judge/jury for what is "right" or "wrong", but if you feel uncomfortable the beginning of this novel reads to be very mysogynistic. Women are public enemy number 1, masculinity is much lauded, and the MC, showing "softness" and "weakness" for being more interested in studying than fighting is troubled by a lot of side characters.

the mysogyny starts to die down (I think) at the introduction of the first female character, and there is little to no mention of anti-women sentiment again. Again, that makes people uncomfortable, because it makes no sense to use that as a premise. I will not rationalize this plot choice but will instead direct everyone to think that the universe within this book moves within the confines of something that had preset parameters.

anyway. Just give this a shot if you're interested in a world of "what if we solved the source of human ailments", angst, and questioning if an AI, even if it is influenced by the processes of the human body, is truly able to become human.

(I know a lot of people have commented on that, that there was no romance at all and it was all just creator/creation attachments, but there is truth in the way Zhang Xun was characterised: he needed to be loved, badly, and then he was; Adam, even with a mechanised brain, might think everything was within the limits of his control and rationality but that isn't how the brain or even the mind works. They fell for each other, although not organically.) <<less
