Eight years ago, Cui Zuojing passed the final level set by the “Queen” and became the first person to have ever escaped from the Pure White Realm. But his time was frozen forever at the moment he left—the day of his sixteenth birthday.

Eight years later, he snuck back to that nightmare world and became a “prisoner” for novice player Dong Zheng.

That day, the monsters of the Pure White Realm once again recalled the fear of being dominated by the devil.

Dong Zheng didn’t have any affections for this little devilish youth at first, but with the mutual support of life and death, he gradually realized—Not good. He seems to be… a big shot!

Riding on endless trains, crossing time and space, the white-faced clown at the end of the railway smiled and handed out the invitation letter.

“Welcome to the Pure White Realm! This is the nightmare of the world, a gambler’s paradise. As long as you have enough chips, any wishes can be satisfied. But if you leave before the end of the game, we’ll charge a certain loss-fee. For example, your life!”

“Now then, please show your chips.”

And, like eight years ago, Cui Zuojing didn’t hesitate to bet on his own feelings.

I love this! There was never a dull moment in this novel. The adventures, friendship, and romance are all here. I love all of the members of the team together with the helpers but Lin Hangzhi is my favorite. He makes everything comical whenever he appears. What I like about this novel the most is the fact that even if the MC and others seems OP, they still have their own weak moments which made reading more thrilling. I think that more fighting scenes at the final battle which will depict the extent of their struggle would make it better. Anyway, I think that overall, this novel is good. Awesome!!! It's a little long but it never bored me. I was very surprised because at first I only wanted to read something about unlimited flow or with different arcs. So when I came upon this I decided to give it a shot. It turned out better than what I had expected :> Every arc is filled with adventure and mystery which made me really invested in it. I especially love how our MC, Cui Zuo Jing, is once an OP character but after he returned back to the pure... more>> white realm, he had to slowly build up his strength again. Though he was still strong compared to the newbies, he was still far from who he was once, which made it more realistic.

I also loved how our ML, Dong Zheng, decided to work hard and improve himself so as to not pull the MC down. Afterall, they are linked by the prisoner card.

The relationship between the MC and ML is really sweet. I saw one of the reviews that mentioned that this novel is a slow burn but honestly, I did not feel that way. The pacing was great and they kind of got together (?) midway? Though midway is still over 100+ chapters, there were still many cute and sweet moments before they got together so it greatly satisfied my heart :))

The plot twist really shocked me though... I mean I had some suspicions but still, I never expected that person to be the one who betrayed the whole 'Afternoon Tea Party' team :// A real spoiler below. Dont open it unless you want to be spoiled. I suggest you dont though... it kinda takes the fun out from your reading experience :)

NANAAAAAAAAAAAA HOW COULD U :" ( I was still so happy when CZJ and Victor found Nana in the middle of the sea. That scene was so heartwarming that it hurt like a b*tch when she back stabbed them in the Rose Castle (?) box. She even caused the deaths of most of the members of the Wanton Insurgency team. Even our dear ML's little brother died... wuwu

Anyways, I love the extras!! Super cute.

I was still wondering how our MC will cope in the real life since I felt that he is more suitable for a life in the pure white realm (Adventures and excitements. Somewhere where he could really showcase his talents and abilities since after going back to the real world the first time, he was not able to further his studies or have a proper life.). But thank god, he was still able to visit the pure white realm and his friends in his dreams. Not just him but the rest of the teammates were able to go back too, which made the ending extra sweet and lovely. Also, I think that Fu Zhe and Cerberus relationship at the very end is super cute. Fu Zhe really needs someone to dote on him more :// He has suffered so much for so long in that huge castle that I hope he is able to gain happiness. I wanna give him a big hug and pat his head :<

Rating: 4.5/5- Exciting, original and well paced. Overall a very satisfying read.

I really enjoyed reading this novel. The thrills, terror and adventure was enjoyable and satisfying. I was left surprised and making the wrong guesses and choices on many occasions!

I loved each character and felt really invested in their journey to defeating the Queen. Each character was beautifully written and dynamic. The emotions and pain were well written and overall I could relate to a lot of the experiences they had gone through.

The ending is a bit too fast paced... more>> when compared to the whole lead up to it, so I did feel slightly underwhelmed. It's a good ending though and very unexpected yet expected in a way.

The extras were quite nice but rather open ended and I personally felt like this story could have done with some R18 scenes coz some of the s*xual tension was off the charts! Lol.

This was a very good read and you won't go wrong on this journey. Expect a slight whiplash with the abrupt ending and don't rely on the extras to give you closure- unfortunately it will only leaving wanting just a bit more of your favorite characters. <<less

3.5 stars. When I was reading Card room, I wanted to see the story from the older team's perspective and this book is the answer to that wish. I quite enjoyed this book although once again I don't think it needed to be this long. The book shines when it comes to the author's creativity when it came to the many 'instances' - there were cool storylines, and the larger world of the novel was fun to learn about. The author is very well-read and made lots of references to... more>> other mythologies, legends, films and stories. Honestly, it was a total mishmash of random mythical figures, but it was still cool to read about.

The second thing I appreciated about this book was the relationships. The author was very good at bringing out the tenderness, individual quirks, the comedy, and touching and moving moments between couples (ok I really love Fu Zhe and Cerberus).

I think I'll probably check out the author's other books. <<less

The fantastical, thrilling, heart melting and gruesome moments eclipsed the somewhat needlessly detailed parts that can be summarized and tame ending that should’ve gotten a bit more crumbs in between the story. I also think that the extras didn’t need to be extras and could’ve fitted well in the main story line but 🤷🏽‍♀️oh well, I still enjoyed it.

the first advice I want to give is: don't let yourself being influenced by the rating and reviews.
Follow your own brain and heart and enjoy the pleasure of reading stories like this one.

Has been a long journey, sometimes a bit sad, other times I was even mad but in the end I would like to erase my memory and lose my mind in this beautiful story another time.
The characters are so good and their growth is painfully great. Every arc is interesting in different way... I don't want to spoiler anything and just praise the creative mind who wrote this story. Thank you.
And even more thanks to the translator who provide us the chance to read "i was once a legend".

MC & ML had a disastrous first meeting. ML is dying & MC is forced into blood contract and made to share ML's injury. On top of that, MC just came back to the pure white realm & surrender most of his emotion/feeling except hatred to the queen to a helper for safekeeping. Once, he and his team is one of the most powerful pilgrimage in the pure white realm. Now he's back again to exact revenge & free his former team. ML is a total newbie in the pure... more>> white realm, but with his determination & MC help, he'll become powerful enough to save the pure white realm from the queen's tyranny.

ML & MC relationship start slow, the romantic side didn't start until MC get his emotion/feeling back, because MC can't feel big emotional change, he can't even grieve for their dead comrade because every emotion/feeling is muted for him. ML is a steady, logical & understanding man for MC recklessness. They complement one another. MC & ML relationship is sweet, without misunderstanding and quarrel. A soothing moments in a tense journey of their pilgrimage. <<less

I really enjoyed this story. I've been reading a lot more of these horror/thriller unlimited flow-esque novels and this one was quite satisfying. I liked the romance between the MC and ML. MC didn't leave ML hanging for chapters on end, and also hoped that he would be able to respond to him in the way he wanted. After they got together, they were so sweet and shameless. I also liked the side couples, and appreciated that the author included both gay and straight couples, which seems more realistic. This... more>> is also one of the most satisfying endings, with like 10 chapters of epilogue to help finish up the story in a nice bow. Would have liked a few more chapters with the main couple, but love the other ones just the same. <<less

Huge admiration to the translator for the excellent translation that makes it a joy to read, thank you so much!

In all honesty, I think the rating (currently 4.2) for this novel doesn't do it justice. This is an incredibly well crafted novel, just for the execution of the plot and how well written it is, it should at least be a 4.5.

I think a lot of the lower ratings come from the rather slow start, the romance is slow and the plot takes a while to really kick up. Interestingly... more>> enough, this is actually built-in to the story. (A pretty small spoiler, you find out really quickly if you read)

The MC, Cui Zuojing, from the beginning, is hinted as coming back with many plans. He's actually meant to be a high level prisoner, summoned by a similarly high-level player/pilgrim.

However, he ends up being accidentally summoned to (in his terms, I think) "become a mentor/life coach" to two novice players. Part of the plot being slow is due to this, because Cui Zuojing doesn't trust these 2 and their low level.

If you read through the start, it really gets better and better. The romance is really good, although MC is OP in the beginning, he and the ML undergo a lot of growth together, and they become true equals and partners. The journey they both go through is fully fleshed out, the ML isn't the standard cold and indifferent one (well he is super rich irl though). They really felt like they were meant to be.

The side characters are also fully fleshed out. Everyone has their dreams and flaws. We get proper looks at what scares them, what they want, and how they feel.

The plot and villains are similarly well done. The world building is magnificent, little lines and stories connecting throughout the world. What I think the author does really well is connecting the past and lore, as well as relationships of the characters.

All in all, the Pure White Realm is really a fascinating world, and this novel is awesome. I haven't finished it yet, but as long as it continues in this way, I have no doubt that it's a book I'll remember. Can't wait for how it turns out at the end. <<less

Just finished binge reading on this story... overall it pretty good and interesting to read. Bringing in new perpectives for readers and I can honestly said it a good read but not my cup of tea. Strongly recommend to those prefer something new and fresh story plot😍😗😍😗😍😗
