I genuinely liked this novel. The school part felt really long, they kept dragging on for a long time and for a while there wasn't any process. I should have read this was a slow romance but even with that I thought they were bros till maybe c70ish.

Good storytelling, just dragged out too much imo.

Good, solid story, I give it 4.5 stars (8.82/10). Initially I thought the main characters were just ok, but later when more conflict starts happening, we get to see more character complexities that made them actually interesting. I do feel like there was character growth. To me, it comes across more in their internal thoughts than in their actions and personality—for example, there are some passages where they reflect on the past and realize they had a misconception or that the current them would have taken a different strategy. I... more>> also like that ML isn't just a typical cold personality—there are good reasons for why he acts the way he does, and I loved seeing his little smiles when MC or classmates do endearing things.

Most of the side characters were likable to me, except for ML’s mom... I really don’t get how she came across as so kind and gentle and caring in the beginning, but the minute the drama went down, she had a complete personality change and was throwing tantrums all over the place.

The pacing was okay to me. The action/drama doesn’t really start until the last 1/3 of the book, so I can see how some people feel like all the normal slice of life school stuff/studying for tests, etc. starts to drag in the first 2/3 of the book, but it wasn’t too bad for me.

The author’s way of foreshadowing is really not my style. During some cute happy scene, there would be a sudden line that says like, “Later looking back, they would realize it was too good to be true” or something similar. It feels spoilerish and ruins the mood.

One thing that really irks me is the author’s obsession with skin tone. It’s emphasized all the time that MC and ML both have extremely beautiful, pale skin. For example, when they’re going to perform on stage with the class, everyone else needs to put makeup on, but the foundation the teacher brought is too dark for MC and ML so they’re the only two who don’t need to use it. And just a lot of descriptions about their pale, porcelain-like skin, etc. Not just that, but whenever there are foil characters who are annoying/jealous of MC/not great personalities, they’re portrayed as having very dark skin, and often described as “goofy looking black monkeys, ” which feels racist and made me very uncomfortable.

Something that I’ve had an issue with in the author’s other works was that the flashback scenes are numerous and very interruptive to the plot and overall reading experience. For this novel, the transition between flashback and present timeline still doesn’t feel super smooth, especially because there is often a POV shift from MC’s POV to omniscient or some other character’s POV, but overall not too bad, much better than some of the author’s other novels. <<less

Well, this is some great writing by one of my fave danmei authors. I was really satisfied. The angst was... quite triggering for me, because I also have homophobic idi*tic parents who also forced me to break up with my ex. But I didn't get a happy ending. My ex is also quite unhappy and still single. He's also someone who seems to have lost the ability to smile. So reading this kind of story is a little cathartic and nostalgic for me.

I think a lot of people who read... more>> this will say that they hate h*mophobia and blame society. If you have not deliberately studied something about East Asian or Chinese history and culture, the main reason that modern Chinese culture is homophobic is due to government policies that rejected everything Western after the revolution. <<less

One of the best slice of life I’ve ever read. It’s realistic, it’s well written, and it’s touching. The best way I can describe it is like rain that slowly seeps through your clothes and into your heart. :)

literally so good. I loved moumou so much I love sheng wang and jiang tian and grandpa ding and old man gao and AHH. but i'll say that if you dont like reading abt school and u don't like slow burn you shouldn't read it bc it has a lot of both. but I love both of those things. I never got bored with the school talk and the slow development of their relationship. it took more than half the book for smth to happen but I honestly just... more>> love reading about chars getting closer and getting to know each other and discovering their feelings and omg moumou did it so well. it had me like giggling and kicking my feet man there were so many sweet and funny moments between the two reading it was so enjoyable. and also the sad parts omg I was tearing up sometimes like...

sheng wang is so relatable and funny and jiang tian also so funny and caring and they're both so smart and also s*upid together sometimes and they love each other so much mannnnn

I'm not a big fan of time skips so I didn't vibe toooo much with the ending but that's just a personal thing and I liked the first like 75??% a lotttt. but I get that it was needed for the story yk but yeah that's my one star off along with some nitpicks but that's it all overall it was very enjoyable <<less

solid 3.5/5 read rounding up to 4.

mu su li is a great writer. they are really great with characterization, I love when I read about characters that feel alive in general. feels great to read! anyways.

this novel felt like an unplanned child. initially, it was a hard core slice of life. I actually fell in love with jiang tian and sheng wang giving their weekly exams, sheng wang improving himself nd overall them just studying like crazy and class B students going insane over class A's students crazy studying habits.... more>> it was strangely fun. well not strangely for me, I absolutely f*cking love plot armour and op characters. this is a contemporary read nd not unlimited flow so since there is no skill level up I can still thoroughly enjoy climbing academic ladder power fantasy kinda, as a uni student lmao. it's fun. I enjoyed it.

and then here comes, the shit. well, not the sh*t exactly. I finished the novel, it can't be that bad. really it isn't that bad. it's just...... it felt like the author got awfully bored of the book and just decided to wrap it up as neatly and quickly as possible. disappointment. bc it wasn't neat just hella rushed. this novel could have been 2k easily, if u even cared.

was introduced, the novel was doomed. or more accurately, it starts falling apart when it hits c80. the author just did not know what to do with the novel then, that flimsy paper thin plotting spanning 100 chapters is what irks me the most. like a coming of age slice of novel hit the family soap opera genre with too much melodrama by the end. like yeah god watching some1 shoot themselves in their foot is awkward.

like its just that. extremely rushed in the end, flimsy grasp on plotting, shitty and surface level dealings with some sensitive stuff, among other jazz. also not to be that guy but that '0.05 win for the gays, 0 win for the bis**uals' thing? I do not like the thing. that genuinely pissed me off bc it was written reaallyyy badly. im not the type of person who would count the number of gays harmed in the novel, but when it's written badly that does pisses me off. a lot. like this novel :P

but ok, apart from the jazz mentioned above, I enjoyed this novel. thanks. <<less

I give this a 4.3

I truly love the main characters and the MC, though they are quite typical in personality, their thought processes and feeling were explain so well, they felt like real people to me.

The beginning 4/5 was nice with the character building and such, but this series lacks the plotting of a 100+ chapter series. That I was seriously questioning where this was all leading too.

And come to the end. I would say everything felt very rushed, and with the final biggest plot arc it felt very unsatisfying... more>> and has now left me feeling a bit empty.

Spoiler

like everything was fine, then suddenly they split apart for 5 years? Then suddenly they get back together? The whole pacing of this is wrong. Like 4 books was just a span of months and the 5th book was suddenly 5 years. I would have like more, especially the afterwards. Like the parents did not get their justice for doing that to my boys. It also began to drag so hard towards the end, and was giving me all the info of everyone but the main couple. I enjoyed reading most of this, but the ending is such a let down.

After reading mainly xianxia and wuxia, I thought I wouldn't be into a school life, coming-of-age novel. How wrong I was! Sheng Wang and Jiang Tian are both great characters, and the way they care for each other is both sweet and heart wrenching, often at the same time.

Wow, I'm quite amazed, this was such a good read!

I have been trying to find where to read this book for ages, and now I have binged it in 3 days (which is impressive coming from me, I am a slow reader)

... more>> I have also read Global University Entrance Examination from the same author which I really loved, so I was very pleasantly surprised that this was sooooo good as well!

The author writes everything so mindlessly beautifully without the descriptions dragging down the plot. The dynamic between the main characters is one of the best I have ever read, and the side characters are just as wholesome and cozy

It has some angst, but the angst fits in well and leads to good character development, so its quite welcome in my opinion. And the fluff! There is so much fluff, but in a natural and pleasant way, and many of these scenes will probably never leave my mind.

I love this one, and it will definitely remain as one of my favorites! :333 <<less

My very first bl novel that I completed (saye run freely is my first ever bl novel and it's still ongoing) . I loved this novel sm. Gave up sleep and was crying at 4 in the morning thanks to sad parts. I even have dedicated a few pages of my diary crying over it.

The boys trust and healthy relationship is everything. And they chose to forgive their parents and move on, like I still find it difficult to do that.

One of the favs scenes would be jiang tian's 18th bday wish. The best ever. As much as it's sad I love how Sheng Wang handled it.

Also love Jiang tian's attitude of "I don't owe you anything" with his mother. Cause babe doesn't owe her anything.

Sheng Wang's Id "shop's anniversary" for his birthday and such cute IDs.

Jiang tian's bday gift to Sheng Wang. His 17 years and his present - Jiang tian.

" Me and the you I love "

Sheng Wang taking over his ge's place as the top student. I don't why I love that too. Like who else could it be if not for Sheng Wang.

read this recently coz I liked this author's other book Global University Entrance Examination. I really like the author's writing style because it's really humorous but clear.

this is a slowburn, coming-of-age, slice-of-life high-school romance. the two main characters were introduced to each other as stepbrothers at the start of the book. they started out misunderstanding and disliking each other but slowly came to like and fall in love with each other. all this is set against the backdrop of high school, so most of the drama revolves around the character's... more>> grades and standing in the school.

i heard that the last 20% suddenly takes a dark turn into trauma so I'm a bit meh about it. but the first 60% is really cute and feel-good. I LOVE the side characters: the teachers, the two characters' classmates... there are a lot of comedic and funny moments too. I loved the process of the two characters falling in love. Sheng Wang's slow realization of his feelings was really well-written.

i've stopped at about 60% because I got bored... there was a period where I read A LOT of high school stories. so while this story was really enjoyable, I'm just personally kind of bored of the high school setting. <<less

i randomly woke up thinking about this novel and so now I will write a review.

pardon me if I misremember anything. It's been a while since I read this. Also im writing on mobile

ohhoho no nonono I forgot about rereading this gem when the Purge happened noooooo helllllppp does it still exist somewhere?

children can't really do much about adult's decisions. This creates conflict when the parents of our two leads (who don't have chemistry) plan to marry so that the both of them will have more time for their children... more>> (who do have chemistry). Sheng dad was widowed and jiang mom reminds him of his wife. Jiang mom's last husband cheated on her with a male mutual friend, so the concept of 🌈people who aren't straight🌈 got a bad first impression on her.

this allows the author to focus on youth and happy memories instead of drama drama contrived plot contrived plot constant interruptions that make me think "and this is why I'm aromantic. These people's love lives seem horrible." the author never has the need to play to those tropes thanks to the previously described main conflict being entertaining enough by itself. (While such tropes can be done really well, avoiding their shortcuts is much harder than choosing a new route entirely.)

the characters are present for the entire romance, and their parents are not absolute dirtbags (if you ignore the h*mophobia because that's a problem for later. This won't come back to bite!/s) who do not have a bad relationship with their children for most of the novel. this makes it hurt all the more when the inevitable happens. Both the parents withnochemistry and the children whoaregay split. We follow sheng wang as he experiences years of "aaAAAGGH my boyfriend was torn away from me for irrational reasons PAIN and MISERY" (there's more angsty reasons I can't think of right now) and grows into a full-fledged adult in the background.

"children can't really do much about adult's decisions." that's what I said three paragraphs ago. It's not an amazing quote, which is great, because it doesn't apply anymore! Sheng wang is no longer a child, and is no longer reliant on his father, and can hook up with jiang tian when he unexpectedly meets him for business meeting men in suits hurr hurr

i focused a lot on the conflict in this review but the novel is 80, 90 percent fluff thanks to this conflict enabling the author. If you can set aside a weekend to read the last 20 chapters in one sitting then you can probably get to the cathartic happy ending without leaving off on the cliff of Angst. <<less

One of my favourites!

Plot was fairly simple and typical, but the development and opening of their hearts was the best part of the story. The pace was very good. Both MC and ML are somewhat lone wolves. The author was not overly extreme, and they do have friends, but they're just more private and closed off in their hearts. The steady development from friends to close brothers to that ambiguous stage and finally to the breaking point was step by step and you could really feel how the two boys... more>> are slowly relying more on each other and opening up their hearts. The way they awkwardly tried to hide their feelings or even try to express them were clumsy but cute, as it would be in a first love at a young age of 16/17. Family circumstances caused quite a bit of (expected) angst, but time heals most and they got through it. The story in itself really isn't anything special, but it's the way it was written, the pacing, the little playfulness unique to school boys and the realistic portrayal of 2 boys who have lost a part of their childhood experiences that others would have enjoyed. Cried quite a bit and definitely love this story a lot.

Slightly similar in vibe to <everyone thinks that I like him> but this one has less humor and felt more like a little paw scratching at your heart and tugging your heartstrings. Definitely one of my favourites, highly recommend! (Note: After reading it, I realise that it also left a bit of bittersweetness in my heart. Just wanted to put it out there) <<less

My rating is 3.5/5. Since I haven't finished yet. While reading this I felt characters are written pretty well. The story is simple and vivid. It's nice to have just scheme through it. Nothing is too deep. I started to notice around 30 or 35th chapter our MC will fall first because skipping the heartbeats was too often for him. MC is a jolly and cheerful boy. ML is not my type of liking, I felt his character setting was forced. From my POV it felt ostentatious. His is probably... more>> a typical ice-berg kind of character set but it did not fit well. So far it was ok.

I liked the side characters more especially the BBQ owner.

I have read Mu Su Li's copper coin. That was a good book too.

So far I would not comment on if it's good or bad but it is not my cup of tea type. I am feeling this because I am not in reading mode. Continue when I have leisure time.

A warm thanks to the translator. Did an awesome job. <<less
