Solo Leveling

10 years ago, after “the Gate” that connected the real world with the monster world opened, some of the ordinary, everyday people received the power to hunt monsters within the Gate. They are known as “Hunters”.

However, not all Hunters are powerful. My name is Sung Jin-Woo, an E-rank Hunter. I’m someone who has to risk his life in the lowliest of catacombs, the “World’s Weakest”.

Having no skills whatsoever to display, I barely earned the required money by fighting in low-leveled catacombs… at least until I found a hidden catacomb with the hardest difficulty within the D-rank catacombs!

In the end, as I was accepting death, I suddenly received a strange power, a quest log that only I could see, a secret to leveling up that only I know about! If I trained in accordance with my quests and hunted monsters, my level would rise.

Changing from the weakest Hunter to the strongest S-rank Hunter!

Amazing, I enjoy the various inter-plays between the MC and those around him. Story progression is always fresh and interesting. Kudos to the Translators for the quality of the releases.

It scratches the power fantasy itch but nothing interesting really happens.

    1. Most of what happens in the real world are just the equivalent of arrogant young masters sending themselves to get thrashed and face-slapped by the MC because they are so much weaker. It's so predictable and the antagonists are so cartoonishly flat and expendable that you're only left with the cheap satisfaction from seeing justice served. It's boring to seeing wave after wave of ants get crushed casually unless it's being played for laughs... but the novel's actually taking it seriously. Instead of getting more plot developments about what's causing the gates to appear, we have to deal with chapter after chapter of this filler.
    1. The gaming aspect is lackluster too. Game worlds like LMS tend to have... more>> a storyline aspect to the quests where you can see how things play out. Similarly, the MC in The Tutorial is Too Hard has to struggle and puzzle his way through each level and learn about his abilities, potentially learning more about the system and backstories of the levels. In contrast, the MC here does mostly pointless grindy things that are mechanical in nature, with much less speculation about the nature of the game world.

This is the best leveling novel I've encountered.... the main character is relatable despite his powers, and the pace is just right. Is difficult to predict what will happen next. His strategies aren't bad either, and the 'protagonists luck' is balanced out by bad luck and realistic mistakes. Nor does the protagonist have an excessive following of girls... exciting and addicting!

It's said that a C&D was given to the translator.

I give it a 3.5 (well 4 since there is no decimals here. Anyway)

I can understand why a lot of people are hating on the MC. Honestly, I did too at the start.

Spoiler

If you finish the period where he didn't get the system yet, you'd think so hunters' achievements must be on how strong you are or that dungeons were mostly fight them all till you win. So basically, you would think even I could have solved that stuff.

[collapse]

When you read the story there were a lot of points you could contradict with if we are talking about gaming in general then applying it in real life.

Spoiler

like the part where he chose to increase solely his strength, then later on the other stats making it all rounded out. If you read other novels with gaming systems, you'd think it was better to be specialized in one category while not completely letting go of others. But in his case, he looked like a mashed up build that didn't focus on a certain strategy.

[collapse]

He is a brute which is typically not something most people would want to read.

I think the charm of this novel would be just how the story progresses. There is nothing complicated about it. It's not memorable to a certain degree. Heck, there a lot of better stories out there. You just enjoy it since it is fun. It's also enjoyable how the translator puts an extra effort on translating and fixing possible misprints by the author. <<less

*Before you start reading, please let me warn you this review will contain spoilers*

I will mainly go through some aspects of the novel that I totally dislike and go on from there. BTW kudos to the translator, he's been doing a phenomenal job. Other than that, lets get started.

Okay, the author introduces side-characters and then totally forgets about them. I don't need to explain any further, you get the point.

... more>> The author can't execute a decent ending, it's half-baked.

The mysteriousness aspect of the novel was totally butchered by the author's incompetent way of story telling.

I think I missed a few but those are just some minor ones.

Anyways on to the good part...

Well, it's decent enough to get a good read.

The rating 1-5 stars isn't enough to get a clear indication on how good it really is. <<less

I cl**ked 4 stars, but meant to click 3. Just so you know.

Enjoyable little story so far. Don't expect anything deep, however. The story just hasn't gone anywhere particular yet. There certainly is a sense of progression, in both story and writing, but from the start there is only the 'I wanna be strong/make money' goal of the protagonist.

Biggest problem this story has, until now, is the lack of world building and a lack of descriptive writing. It isn't on the level of 'then this happened, and then this happened',... more>> but it certainly is lacking.

The main problem I will see happening in this story is the problem of power escalation. At some point he will be overpowered and I'm not sure how the writer can keep escalating without it becoming ridiculous. Then again, there are only (?) 270 chapters in total, so I suspect, and hope, story progression will pick soon and overtakes the need for power progression. Doubt it, however.

So, fun little story, but lacking in certain areas. <<less

Great story, unlike another "isekai " story which the plot mainly about MC dragged by "truck-san", died, and then reborn as another OP character in another world, whether he/she build a harem or not. I feel like this story feel more realistic if applied in real life, not just about traveling, hunting, etc, but also the simple MC which doesn't really care about the status and honor unless you are in a situasion which it needed. The world not always filled with "sugar coating memories", sometimes there are "bitter painful... more>> experience" which make you and adult and mature. <<less

Seriously guys, I'm loving this novel. Thank you to whoever is doing the translation and keep up the good work. Also props the whoever does the manwha as it's pretty god da** awesome. I highly suggest reading both.

The plot contains the dungeons in real life trope that you can find in allot of novels as well as the super power hunters trope to accompany it.

HOWEVER, what this novel does do, is take these tropes and makes them feel really bada**. It probably does these tropes better than 99% of it's... more>> competition. Reading the novel and manhwa, at the end of the chapters I consistently felt myself thinking, " Holy sh** that was fricken awesome!", before hurrying to the next chapter. The manhwa with it's visual representation does an especially good job illustrating this with it's greatly drawn, fully colored artwork.

Go out and read 10 chapters of the manhwa (it'll be faster than reading the equivalent chapters of the novel) and if you like it go read the novel as well. After chapter 10 is when he starts becoming stronger if you were wondering. I really enjoyed this novel and manhwa and hope that neither get dropped.

P.S. Chapter 64 or the novel = Chapter 54 of the manhwa <<less

lol I wanted to write this review while my thoughts are still fresh after watching the anime and didn't want to be too negative since I haven't actually read the webnovel but all the 1 and 2 star reviews make me feel relieved. 😂😂😂

I think this might have been a great pick for anime adaptation! From the anime I can see what may have been the bad parts -- it can be very repetitive and simple (he keeps fumbling escape stones) -- but there are some great parts too. Over... more>> 12 weeks or even better a 12 episode binge the interesting parts are a hook enough to finish the series and want more without being tired/bogged down by the negatives. I'm also assuming it's not the most expensive to produce...

I've obviously heard of solo leveling for years before the anime but the 'no one else change their rank' thing always put me off. There's OP and there's pointless, right? Well the anime was better than I expected, I binged 12 episodes and I want to know what happens next! If all the seasons were out I think I could be fine skipping the webnovel but with a year or more wait time I might as well read the whole thing. I also could just read spoilers but as a novelupdates member I'm assuming I'll enjoy the webnovel more! Maybe I'll update this review if I've dropped it lol. <<less

I've heard great things about solo leveling, but it's just another story with all the worst "gamer" and overpowered protagonist tropes.

My biggest gripe with gamer stories is any time they have a "private dungeon instance". Tons of chapters of just grinding against nameless mobs alone. I skim through these blinding fast and miss nothing.

MC is just the edgiest possible person and everything he participates in is a complete bloodbath where he pretends to be weak just to save them at the end, sometimes even after serious casualties.

This is probably one of the worst stories I've ever read on here and I honestly have no idea how the rating is so high on this or how it became popular enough to be made into a manga.

There basically is no development in the story outside of the MC growing stronger and focusing around getting stronger and becoming stronger and did I mention he grows stronger? Like thats everything in the story with everything dumbed down by a lot outside of it mentioning how much more powerful the MC... more>> has gotten but there is barely any part of him actually using those powers or acting bada$$.

Now the manga is top tier but imagine reading the manga with only the text and not a single picture to highlight how cool or powerful the MC is and you pretty much have the novel. Like the author can barely seem to bother explaining or describing most of the stuff.

With all that said I am very happy that there was a manga made out of this and to some degree you can even see in how the story is written that the novel to some degree works as a manuscript to a manga but without the pictures to fill in the blanks it makes you wonder what the plans was when making the novel. <<less

Constant quality, not too good nor too bad, but a lot of badass scene.

There is not much drama bs, and I love it.

MC is op and growth fast, his skill are cool too.

MC isnt arrogant, but not lowkey.

The ending are dissapointed, but yeah not bad. At least its happy and clear ending. Not open end bs.

Idk why people give this novel 1 star, this novel would be worth three stars at worst.

I don’t know why this got such a low rating. The story kept me engaged for hours, even with the problems pointed out by other readers. It isn’t a literary masterpiece, but you get absorbed in the wins and losses that Sung Jin Woo encounters.

Spoiler

When I read the citizens fighting for their lives, I felt their pain and cried several times.

Yes, there is propaganda against Japan and China, but let’s be honest, these countries come in conflict with each other in real life. It wouldn’t make sense for them to play nice. I found it ironic that North Korea only had a small role, though.

I agree that the dragon monarch fight was anticlimactic. They also ignore the implications of turning immortal. The author should’ve made a better transition to the second timeline from the first.

[collapse]

As a light novel, I give if 4 stars. I’ve seen other 4+ star light novels with vapid MCs and this is worth more than those novels. It’s something to read if you have several hours available. <<less

I actually enjoyed the side stories more than the main story, although will need the main story to fill in the context. Some major nationalistic prejudice against Japan. Other parts of the world are simply backdrops without any cultural differentiation.

I personally loved it. I couldn't find much of anything wrong with it. It gave me a lot of read time, it had really good art, storyline was decent (i haven't read LN but I'm planning on reading it).
Spoiler

With the newer chapters it has solved quiet a few things that some people are complaining about, such as the romance part of it, and what Sung Jin Woo was doing after he rewinded time.

A fantastic story.

Is MC too OP and breezes his way to the top? Sure. But it was well written and highly satisfying. Not every story need that annoying villain who refuses to die, or heavy romance with the FL falling all over MC and losing brain cells. The romance is a little under-developed, but not to the point of being s*upid.

The art is good, the power is just so damn cool.

I read this novel back when the SL manhwa just started because I loved that and wanted to continue to story without waiting. It is a pretty good, solid 4/5, fairly quick read. It is not perfect nor one of the best light novels I have read, but for its length, it is worth your time and is one of the few light novels I have actually completed all the way.

My very first ln that got me hooked on these crappy f*cking things but this one was an all time great and should always be one of the undisputed kings of korean ln's. All that I wished of this novel would be a sequel and a longer story.

The plot is pretty generic but it makes up for it with the MC and its stuff.

Would reccomend.

Story isn't all that special; 'OP MC saves the world basically, but it's written well

1 on 1 romance and it's really cute, but some of the characters that are introduced as potential love interests/show some interest in the MC are straight up ignored and mostly don't even get a passing mention in future chapters. Adding to that, side characters generally are left a bit on the side-lines - ofc, it's a story supposed to focus on this one person, but still... Though I could imagine this having to do a... more>> bit with the ending (->spoiler)

Author wrote some 'Epilogue/'normal' life after' side stories that satisfied pretty much everything I needed closure for

I think a lot of people are dissatisfied with the ending and I understand why:
Spoiler

The ending basically makes him regress with all the powers he gained from before and ends the conflict with out anyone dying, but that simultaneously takes away all the bonds he built up to that point. Some people still retain their memories though, or regain them after encountering the MC again.

Personally, I'm a fan of the conclusion <<less
